I tell you this: despise all worldly compensations, cut out of your life all base forms of pleasure, and you will be blessed for it. Be more than repaid by the comfort with which I shall flood your heart. The more you withdraw from the comfort you find in creatures, the sweeter and stronger will be the comfort you find in me. To begin with, you will not reach this state without a hard struggle and a certain amount of pain. Lifelong habits will bar your way; acquire virtues that will wrest the victory from them. The body will complain, but a sense of commitment in your soul will hold it in check. The Old Serpent will goad you and work upon your feelings, but prayer and mortification will put him to flight. Moreover, by working in earnest and avoiding idleness, you will block one of his broadest means of access to your heart. (Thomas a Kempis, Imita- tion of Christ, 3, ch. 12) *** We Are Never Safe from Temptation in This Life THE BELOVED: You are never safe from this life, my son; as long as you live, you will always need spiritual weapons. You spend your days among your en- emies; the attack may come from any quarter. If you fail to use the shield of patience on every trial, it will not be long before you get wounded. Besides that, if you neglect to set your heart unwaveringly upon me, with the stark desire of enduring all for my sake, you will be unable to bear the brunt of the assault and will fail to win the palm of victory I award to my blessed ones. You must therefore make your way like a man through all that irritates you. You must strike hard at all that stands in your way. The man who pushes through is rewarded with the Bread of Heaven, while the fainthearted is left in the depths of his misery. If you merely try to find rest in this world, you will never reach the rest of life everlasting. It is not long hours of rest you should envision here, but long hours of patient endurance. True peace must be sought not on earth, but in Heaven; not in men, not in other creatures, but in God alone. Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Rev. Canon Olivier Meney Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland

Canon Meney - (510) 604-0391 or [email protected]

YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN MASS LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST?

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser-vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in

attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mis-sion through prayer and apostolic work.

The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy.

The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

What Love Is Those who accuse others of loving God or religion too much, really do not love God at all, nor do they know the meaning of love. Those who are united in love, enjoy and are pained at the same things. The Psalmist who loved God would say that his heart was cast down at the thought of those who broke the law of God. This mutual inherence, as the second effect of love, adds something to unity in marriage. Unity of the flesh now becomes unity of the mind and heart. The intermittent carnal oneness demands another kind of unity than the flesh. St. Paul says husband and wife ought to act toward one another "as if mar-ried in the Lord"; that is, as conscious of their voca-tion to be one in Christ. As Elizabeth Barrett Brown-ing wrote: "Two human loves make one divine." Mu-tual inherence is much more than a sharing of inter-ests and an exchange of properties: rather these are the effects of a deeper fellowship which reaches into the core of their being. Love that is held together only by the flesh is as fragile as the flesh, but love which is held together by a spiritual oneness and based on a love of a com-mon destiny, is truly "until death do us part." What makes a true mutual inherence is not the sharing of the same sensations of pleasure. Rather the "sister-soul" and "brother-soul" are formed in the daily com-munion with the same joys, sorrows, efforts, and sac-rifices. One can yearn for another after knowing flesh unity, but it is impossible to yearn for another after soul unity. It is not enough just to share the same words and the same enjoyments; one must also share the same silences. "Mary treasured up all these say-ings, and reflected on them in her heart." (Luke 2:19) Those who do not yet love one another deeply have need of words; those who deeply love, thrive on si-lences. The third effect of love is ecstasy, which means being "carried out of oneself." In a broad kind of way, because love makes the lover dwell on the beloved, he is to some extent already taken out of himself. Adolescents are often surprised that their elders know they are in love. But the fumbling with tasks and the skipping of meals indicate they are in a dreamer's state. They are already lifted out of their natural way of acting. The Greeks describe a strong love as "madness," not in the sense of abnormality, but inspiration. The poet who was inspired was said to be "mad" with his love, as in romantic language today, the lover describes himself as being "mad" over his beloved. (From Three To Get Married by Fulton Sheen)

Guard of the Senses To live a serious interior life, one that is whol-ly concentrated on seeking God, it is necessary to pre-vent the outside world from entering the soul and fill-ing it with distractions and noise; it is necessary, therefore, to guard its doors assiduously. The senses are precisely the doors which open to earthly things: sight permits its images to enter; hearing, its sounds, and so forth, so that, without a discreet mortification of the sense, the soul, the living temple of the Blessed Trinity, becomes like a market-place, open to all kinds of traffic, open to every wind of rumor. Then Jesus might well say to us what He once said to the profan-ers of the temple, “Make not the house of my Father a house of traffic” (Jn. 2:16). A temple of the Blessed Trinity by Baptism, the consecrated soul is doubly so by reason of its vows and promises, and is, therefore, doubly obliged to guard the recollection of its spirit, in order to make it really a “house of prayer.” Accord-ing to St. Teresa Margaret of the Heart of Jesus, “It suffices to keep well closed the outside doors, that is, the senses, so that the soul and the heart cannot go elsewhere than to their center, which is God.” This was her method: “I shall fix my gaze on my heart and I shall raise my heart to God” (Spirituality of St. Tere-sa Margaret of the Heart of Jesus). Mortification of the senses should not be limited to Carthusians and to those in cloisters, as it is an indispensable exercise for all souls, that they may become recollected and whol-ly concentrated upon God. St. John of the Cross says that we should use our exterior senses in such a way as not to disturb our recollection. “The faculties and senses must not be employed wholly upon things, but only insofar as in unavoidable. With this exception all must be left free for God” (Spiritual Maxims II, 38). The “unavoidable” is indicated by what duty requires, and when we use the powers of our soul only to this de-gree, which is that determined by God’s will, the soul cannot be harmed in any way. But the Saint contin-ues: “If there present itself to a man the pleasure of listening to things that tend not to the service and hon-or of God, let him not desire that pleasure, nor desire to listen to them; and if there present itself the pleas-ure of looking at things that help him not Godward, let him not desire the pleasure or look at that these things; and if in conversation or in aught else, such pleasure present itself, let him act likewise” (Ascent of Mt. Carmel I, 13,4). This means that we should not use our senses for anything that is not required by duty or which cannot serve to raise our mind to God. (From Divine Intimacy by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene, OCD).
