THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST No Fear! June 21, 24-25, 2017 AS WE GATHER There are many things that cause us to be afraid. We become afraid anytime we perceive our sense of security is threatened. This can be a perceived physical, financial, intellectual, relational, or spiritual threat. In these last days, these threats may only appear to be real or they may actually be real. No matter what it may be, our security and our strength lie in our God, who is our refuge and strength. In Him we put our trust. Our struggle is revealed as we fall into patterns of living, speaking, and thinking that are not in line with being the people you have called us to be. You have set us free through your perfect life, death, and resurrection, yet we continue to live like people who are enslaved to the enemy. Lord Jesus, forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness for your name’s sake. 2 Amen.

OPENING HYMN #728 “How Firm a Foundation”

How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He say than to you He has said Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

“Fear not! I am with you, O be not dismayed, For I am your God and will still give you aid; I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

“The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose I will not, I will not, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never, forsake!

“When through fiery trials your pathway will lie, My grace, all sufficient, will be your supply. The flames will not hurt you; I only design Your dross to consume and your gold to refine.

“Throughout all their lifetime My people will prove My sov’reign, eternal, unchangeable love; And then, when gray hairs will their temples adorn, Like lambs bosom be they will still in My borne.”

(Rise) INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: But now thus says the LORD, Men: He who created you, O Jacob, Women: He who formed you, O Israel: Pastor: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine.” People: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Pastor: You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. People: Amen.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: Gathering as God’s chosen people, we bring with us the sins that wage war with our souls. We take this time to confess our sins to Him who has delivered our souls from death, and we seek His forgiveness through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus, People: We are surely sinful from birth, and we struggle with change, even as a people changed by you from death to life. 2 Amen.

Pastor: Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: Go in peace. People: Serve the Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE #805 “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heav’nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, our refuge, our fortress, our God in whom we trust, hear our prayers this day. People: As you have done for your people throughout the centuries, defend us from persecution, stand with us in our struggles, give us strength to stand firm in the face of fear and uncertainty, and raise us up with your mighty right hand. Pastor: Lead us by your Spirit in these last days as we bring your name to bear in all circumstances and as we live our lives as your chosen people. People: For you live and reign as one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—now and forever. Amen. (Be seated) WORD

OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 20:7–13 (God is with us when we are persecuted for being His people.) O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long: everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in: indeed. I cannot. I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! Report him! Let’s report him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, 3

saying, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.” But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten. O Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.

EPISTLE Romans 6:12–23 (Jesus has freed us from our sins; live free.) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey-whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads t righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Rise) HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:5a, 21–33 (Life will be hard in these last days. Fear not,

for God is with us.) These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his

master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows. Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

HYMN #618 “I Come, O Savior, to Thy Table”

I come, O Savior, to Thy table, For weak and weary is my soul; Thou, Bread of Life, alone art able To satisfy and make me whole:

Refrain: Lord, May Thy body and Thy blood Be for my soul the highest good!

Thy heart is filled with fervent yearning That sinners may salvation see Who, Lord, to Thee in faith are turning; So I, a sinner, come to Thee. Refrain

7

Unworthy though I am, O Savior, Because I have a sinful heart, Yet Thou Thy lamb wilt banish never, For Thou my faithful shepherd art: Refrain

Weary am I and heavy laden; With sin my soul is sore oppressed; Receive me graciously and gladden my heart, for I am now Thy guest. Refrain

What higher gift can we inherit? It is faith’s bond and solid base; It is the strength of heart and Spirit, The covenant of hope and grace. Refrain

HYMN #735 “Have No Fear, Little Flock”

Have no fear, little flock; Have no fear, little flock For the Father has chosen To give you the Kingdom; Have no fear little flock!

Have good cheer, little flock; Have good cheer, little flock, For the Father will keep you In His love forever; Have good cheer, little flock!

Praise the Lord high above; Praise the Lord high above, For He stoops down to heal you, Uplift and restore you; Praise the Lord high above!

Thankful hearts raise to God; Thankful hearts raise to God, For He stays close beside you, In all things works with you; Thankful hearts raise to God!

HYMN #696 “O God, My Faithful God”

O God, my faithful God, True fountain ever flowing, Without whom nothing is, All perfect gifts bestowing; Give me a healthy frame, And may I have within A conscience free from blame, A soul unstained by sin.

Grant me the strength to do With ready heart and willing Whatever You command, My calling here fulfilling; That I do what I should While trusting You to bless The outcome for my good, For You must give success.

Keep me from saying words That later need recalling; Guard me lest idle speech May from my lips be falling; But when within my place I must and ought to speak, Then to my words give grace Lest I offend the weak.

Lord, let me win my foes With kindly words and actions, And let me find good friends For counsel and correction, Help me, as You have taught, To love both great and small And by Your Spirit’s might To live in peace with all.

Let me depart this life Confiding in my Savior; By grace receive my soul That it may live forever; And let my body have A quiet resting place Within a Christian grave; And let it sleep in peace.

And on that final day When all the dead are waking, Stretch out Your mighty hand, My deathly slumber breaking. Then let me hear Your voice, Redeem this earthly frame, And bid me to rejoice With those who love Your name.

CLOSING HYMN #832 “Jesus Shall Reign”

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun Does its successive journeys run: His kingdom stretch from shore to shore Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To Him shall endless prayer be made, And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With ev’ry morning sacrifice.

People and realms of ev’ry tongue Dwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on His name.

Blessings abound where’er He reigns: The pris’ners leap, unloose their chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all who suffer want are blest.

Let ev’ry creature rise and bring Honors peculiar to our King; Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud amen.
