Adrenocorticotropin is a hormone that stimulates the expression of sterodoigenic enzymes. Sterodoigenic enzymes help in the formation of steroids from cholesterol. cAMP transfers into cells the effect of hormones that cannot pass through cell membranes. The raise of cAMP stimulates a protein (PKA) which also activates diacylglycerol kinase theta (DGK θ). DGK θ helps in the formation of phosphatidic acid. In addition, lipins are proteins that play an important role in the dephosphorilation of phosphatidic acid. Hence, the purpose of this investigation is to distinguish the role of Lipin 1 in adrenocortical function and to see how PKA regulates lipin1. One important finding is that when lipin1 is absent there have been some changes in steroidogenic enzyme expression. Another finding is that cAMP causes the expression of lipin1 to diminish. This research aids in the detection of the proteins that help in the formation of fatal diseases that are caused by an excess or a lack of cortisol, such as Cushing’s Syndrome and adrenal hyperplasia. Future studies related to these proteins should be made to prevent the formation of these diseases.
