    AFTERCARE SERVICE AVAILABLEUnited Methodist Church, LSU Campus

    Because LSU Pre-College full day camps conclude at 4:30, United Methodist Church will offer aftercare for parents who need extended day. Those campers who have pre-registered for the service with UMC will be escorted from U-High at the end of day camp (4:30 p.m.) to UMC and should be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. The cost is $25 per child per week and should be paid directly to UMC. Please contact them to register and complete the required paperwork at 225-344-0345 or by email at [email protected]. (NOTE: LSU Pre-College personnel will not be available to care for students who remain after car pool concludes, so please take advantage of this service. Pre-registration is required for this service through UMC)

    TIGER CHALLENGEGRADES K–6

    Join us for a Summer at LSU! Tiger Challenge is a unique academic summer program that engages the imagination of students entering K through 8th. With the strong tradition and resources of LSU, we attract exemplary teachers from around the state, who integrate math, reading, writing, science, and social studies into themes designed to encourage students to reach higher. We will focus on critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.

    Critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills are emphasized in a community of motivated students. Experience a series of programs that capture interest and create hands-on projects, and learn from experts in LSU departments and around the community to gain valuable preparation for the upcoming school year!

    Our June two-week session is focused on community helpers, while our July session dives into the Five Senses! Each theme offers different activities to keep the experience exciting for students who want to enroll in all sessions.

    Session II: Animals – YTCABJuly 6–17

    Prepare for Kindergarten! This two-week course is designed for children entering kindergarten with an emphasis on preparing them for the routines and activities that they will encounter in their first kindergarten classroom. Participate in bi-weekly science experiments, LSU field trips, and hands-on activities as your child learns fun strategies for reading, writing, and math.

Use math measurement and estimation skills to compare different creepy crawlers. With the use of cross–curricular activities and technology, research and learn about animals and their life cycles on our planet, and how important they are to you! Creepy, but in a great way!

    Pets & Vets – YTCBBJune 8–12

    Attention all pet-lovers! This is the purr-fect opportunity to learn about different types of pets, exotic animals, and the responsibilities of pet ownership. Learn how to care for a pet, the role of veterinarians, the use of x-rays, and important issues that face animals in our society. Enhance your reading, science, and math skills as you visit with a veterinarian and participate in hands-on projects and games. Enjoy LSU campus field trips and work in teams to share responsibilities. The perfect first pet vet class!

    Fasten your seatbelts and hold on for a wild ride as we “travel” alongside the Tiger Challenge Magic Bus! Transform the way you see the world through hands-on activities integrated with science, social studies, math, music, and cooking. Examine cells under microscopes, inspect for germs with a black light, observe beehives and ant hills, and much more! From the smallest of the small to the biggest of them all, activities, field trips, and guest speakers make this a block”BUS”ter week!

    ABC Your Way to the Movies –YTCCOJune 22–26

    Dive into the movies, Tiger Challenge style! We focus on one of our favorite movies each day and incorporate math, science, language arts, cooking, art and music! Let your light shine through with Trolls; race down ramps with the characters from Cars; and cook gumbo with Tiana and her Louisiana friends! Join us as we dig deep into numbers with the math Minions and explore water with Nemo and friends. Don’t miss this the chance to see it all!

    Spinning in Space – YTCBFJuly 6–10

    Prepare to soar and learn fun facts about the galaxy, sun, stars, planets, moons, and more! Hands-on science activities are integrated with music, poetry, and art. Create an edible version of the moon phases, a solar system model, and contain a galaxy inside a jar! Take LSU field trips, hear from speakers and learn more about space than you can imagine!     Mad Scientists –YTCCNJuly 13–17

    Inquisitive minds want to know! Put on your lab coat and spend a week with us for opportunities to be creative with a variety of materials, engage in age-appropriate research, project-based learning and collaborate with fellow scientists! From making ice cream in a bag to exploring the engineering and design process, we tackle all things scientific! Learn the rules of lab safety, create awesome experiments and then share them with your parents. Take part in science labs, LSU field trips, and hear from speakers in the field!

    A Walk on the Wild Side – YTCACJune 1–5

    Are you ready to take a walk through the wild and exciting world of animals? Spend the entire week identifying and classifying animals and their corresponding habitats. Examine underwater wildlife through the use of a microscope, and discover why birds can fly, swim, and stay warm all winter long! Dig through the desert using grid coordinates, excavate fossils, and engage in hands-on projects to describe traits and characteristics of animals A through Z.

    Jr. Med–Alternative – YTCETJune 8–12

    Interested in medicine? How about being a doctor? Learn the basic systems and functions of the human body, and reinforce a healthy lifestyle. Use your five senses to perform investigations and tap into the creative parts of your brain as you create models of your body and learn how they work together. Jump into fun exercises to strengthen your muscles and plan recipes to give your body the energy it needs. Hear from speakers in the field of medicine such as researchers, doctors, x-ray technicians, and more.

    Jr. Naturalist – YTCCBJune 15–19

    Okay, nature enthusiasts! Foster your appreciation for the environment and inspire a sense of wonder through experiences with the natural world! Engage in hands-on activities, nature hikes, science experiments, and games that take you outdoors. Learn how plants contribute to life on Earth and hear from professionals at LSU as you fine-tune not only your math and science skills, but your art and cooking skills too!

    Tiger Challenge Campout – YTCDUJune 22–26

    Oh, do we have a camp for you outdoor enthusiasts! Grab your tent, compass, and camping gear, and let’s make some s’mores! Enjoy an interactive week of field trips, speakers, and hands on-activities, from a classroom cookout, to storytelling and tie-dye. Use your skills to measure your hiking steps, create a solar oven, build a flashlight, and more! Learn about personal safety and environmental safety. Work as a team to decipher clues on the Tiger Challenge scavenger hunt. It’s the perfect classroom campout experience of the summer!

    NOTE: This course is held in the classroom and will take outdoor excursions.

    Who Would Win? – YTCECJuly 6–10

    A Tiger Challenge take on the popular Who Would Win book series! Join us for a week as we discover what would happen if a whale met up with a great white shark? Who do you think would win? How about a tiger and a razorback? Packed with opportunities to learn about a variety of animals, their characteristics, and what features make them incredible survivors. You will participate in activities that integrate STEM, literature, and art. Create your own “who would win?” challenges; work in teams and individually. Take LSU field trips and visit with guest speakers!

    Solids, Liquids & Gases, Oh My! – YTCAEJuly 13–17

    Young scientists enjoy a fun week dedicated to investigating solids, liquids, and gases, and understanding the concept of mixtures. Examine the evaporation process first-hand; conduct investigations to see if common materials either sink or float; and perform jaw-dropping experiments with gases! Use your new knowledge to explore sites on the LSU campus, and even get a taste of fun mixtures at the smoothie shop!

    The Thrill of Physics – YTCAKJune 1–5

    Scream machines! Hang onto your hat and explore the wild world of thrill rides! Tap into your imagination to create crafty construction projects using simple and complex machines. Build a bridge out of Popsicle sticks, create a cotton ball catapult, and even participate in a not-so-ordinary egg drop contest. Race your balloon-powered rocket car while calculating distance and time, and learn about force and motion as you build your own amusement park ride!

    Scientific Masterpieces – YTCAMJune 8–12

    Explore the mysteries of art as you learn how artists use science to create their masterpieces! Learn how principles such as chemical reactions, evaporation, and polymers are critical to a successful artist. Create a virtual picture with mirrors, a self-portrait, and test your theory of optical illusions. Use polar/non polar properties of matter to make crystal pictures, bubble art and art sculptures. Test your knowledge of light to develop your own solar art and use a salt texture technique to create a Starry night and Sunny day painting. From the mysteries of Sand Art to Shrinky Dinks and fresco paintings, this amazing science course blends perfectly with your artistic mind!

    It’s all things LEGO! Build, code, and create virtual and hands-on projects as you perfect your architectural design, constructive building, and collaborative teamwork skills. Complete challenges and use Legos in the areas of art, comics, and animations!

    Amazing Chemistry Collisions – YTCBMJune 22–26

    Prepare to uncover a world of mystery through the inner workings of chemistry! Experiment with physical and chemical changes, create mixtures and solutions that you can eat and drink, and write a secret letter to a friend using invisible ink! As you crack the chemical code by using mathematical equations, you’ll learn about chemical reactions that occur in the human body and how this affects you every day. Keep your scientific journal, participate in a scavenger hunt connecting the periodic table to objects that surround us!

    Creative Academy: Listen to Your Art – YTCEZCalling all young artists with a palette for the creative process!July 6–10

    In this camp, we will embark together on a survey of famous artists throughout history and engage in creating our own masterpieces inspired by their works. There will be a daily interactive story time to help us get to know these famous artists. We will learn about key creative vocabulary such as line, texture, and pattern and how these art celebrities used these to create their beautiful images. Then, we will dive into the creative process together! The original masterpiece will be broken down into simple steps, coming together to reveal the whole image. The remainder of the day will be time for the young artists to instill their own flare and imagination into their work through a hands on exploration of exciting art materials. The young artists will have the opportunity to express their individual creativity and rich perspectives into their images, letting their own masterpieces emerge!

    Math Wizards — YTCALJuly 13–17

    Tackle math and have fun doing it! Hands¬-on activities sharpen mathematical wits, and deepen critical-thinking, problem-solving, and logical-reasoning skills. From measurement and data to numbers and operations, each day focuses on a different mathematical skill. Put your new skills to the test as you tour around the LSU campus to identify angles of the bell tower, plan a budget for the LSU Bookstore, measure a football field, and tackle our geometry scavenger hunt! On field trips, learn to work as a team and test your individual skills!

    Have you ever wondered if what you hear is true? Let’s find out! Experience a week of fun-filled, hands-on science as we investigate popular misconceptions the MythBusters’ way. Fact or fiction? You decide by creating experiments to put legends to the test. Does a baseball really have a “sweet spot”? Can helium balloons really carry a person? Dispel common myths through experiments and field trips, and get expert information from professionals in the field. Come ready to bend your mind and bust some myths!

    Lights! Camera! Action! – YTCDMJune 8–12

    It’s time to show off your acting, storyboarding, musical composition, and photography skills! Start off by honing your photography skills and capture still images using various cameras. Use iPads to work on videography skills and bring your work alive using apps like Garage Band and iMovie. Integrate photos and video clips filmed while traveling around our city and campus. Meet with photography experts and learn how to edit and create your own iMovie trailer.

    Vet Medicine – YTCEIJune 15–19

    Have you ever wondered what happens when you take your pet to the Vet? Well, wonder no more! Take the adventure this week and peek into the life of a vet as you discover what’s behind a diagnosis. Delve into aspects of veterinary science and explore the circulatory, digestive, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems of four-footed patients. Peer through a microscope at bacteria, determine if a disease is hereditary. Field Trips, project-based games and expert speakers fill out our week. You won’t want to miss this one!

    Espionage: Secret Agent – YTCCXJune 22–26

    Do you have what it takes to be a Secret Agent? In this mission, if you choose to accept it, investigate the positive and negative aspects of the life of a spy. Use your teamwork and critical thinking skills to discover what it takes to become a spy for national and international espionage. Examine the critical roles that spies have played in forming civilizations. Crack codes, work in teams on missions and attend secret briefings. Take adventures around LSU. As a secret agent this week, you will discuss surveillance techniques and undercover maneuvers. Hunt for a mole within the ranks and join us for a role-play adventure you will never forget!

    Jr. Entrepreneurs – YTCEKJuly 6–10

    It’s time to get Biz Smart! Experience first-hand the challenges and triumphs of starting and managing a business. Engage in creative problem-solving, product testing and team building when you compete in team challenges and solo business decisions. Learn to develop a business plan to present to a panel of potential investors. Discover how to develop a budget, set goals and recognize opportunities in this rare look into a startup company. LSU Field trips, speakers and fun business games that focus on critical thinking, problem solving, math, and more!

    Let the games begin! You and your team are challenged to solve physical and mental tasks and complete the Amazing Race. Put your mind to the test, learn new skills, and value the importance of working together as you solve clues and reach objectives about countries and locations around the world! Each day presents challenges, hands-on projects, science experiments, and field trips. See you at the finish line!

    We invite pre-college students entering 7th-8th grade to join us for our unique Tiger Scholars Program! Located at University High School, courses allow you to expand your knowledge in a field of interest with the resources provided at LSU. Our instructors work collaboratively with departments to create an environment for learning that will allow for lab visits, college readiness and professor introductions, and engaging project-based learning.

    CSI: Forensic Science – YTCBSJune 1–5

    A week completely devoted to Forensic Scientists! Gain an introduction to understanding the science behind crime scene and evidence analysis. Become an active part of a mock crime scene, identify possible suspects, gather evidence and form a case. You will learn from forensic experts, visit the nationally-renowned LSU Faces Lab and hone your observation, creativity, and intellectual skills. Work in teams to analyze evidence, be introduced to DNA, blood analysis, forensic art, trace evidence, and polygraphs. Learn the importance of sketching, and how to identify possible suspects. We will even dive into soil samples and arson investigations, as well as forensic profiling. No evidence is too small with microscopic investigations including hair analysis, toxicology and fiber comparisons. Suit up and let’s solve this!

    Career Discovery at LSU – YTCDGJune 8–12

    It’s your future! Join us this week and investigate current and emerging career fields, visit LSU departments, and get a jump on the high school and college admission process! You will speak with leaders in future fields and participate in guided hands-on experiments. Develop your leadership and public speaking skills, learn great tools for conflict resolution and effective decision and gain confidence working in teams or solo! Prepare for your future now and learn to showcase your strengths!

    STEAM-4-Girls – YTCDZJune 15–19

    This is an exciting time for women and science! Explore STEAM careers (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and learn about the importance of historic female figures that came before you and the rising professionals around you. Explore urban ecology, chemistry, DNA, soil science, and the physics of a Barbie bungee. Leave your comfort zone and discover hidden talents as you are challenged to try something new each day: sample foods, perform dances, create designs, even climb a rock wall!     Courses fill quickly, so we encourage you to register early. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register no later than one week prior to your first class meeting. All documentation required for course admission must accompany the registration, including medical information.

    Refund & Cancellation Policy• A $20 processing fee is charged for all refunds.

    • All refund requests must be received in writing and can be emailed to [email protected].

    • Full refunds (less the processing fee) will be granted for cancellations received 10 business days prior to course start date.

    • There are no refunds for cancellation requests received less than 10 business days prior to the course start date. You may transfer to another camp, but refunds will not be possible in the new registration.

    • No refunds will be given after the first class meeting.

    • LSU reserves the right to cancel courses. If the course is canceled, we can transfer you to another course or refund your entire payment.

    LunchTiger Challenge: Supervised lunch will take place at the LSU Lab School cafeteria from 12:00 noon–12:45 p.m. Students registered for a full-day program should bring a lunch and drink.
