Lessons I have learned being a FLL

Memories of Initial Comments made to me – So I tried them all!
“Video conferencing is not the way to go, people will be sitting at their computers with a web cam and that is how it will happen”
“Floristry can’t be done via video conference – it needs to be hands on”
“Wine appreciation via video conference –you need to taste wine to appreciate it! Plus what’s the point?”
I have learned that:Empowering others takes time
Work first to empower the people with whom you have most influence
Positive runs on the board are the most powerful and influential
Walk in your learners shoes – learn with your participants
I have learned that: We must be prepared to take risks – both as teachers and learners
Rural Womens Gathering
Gliding – outside comfort zone but exhilarating
Speaking at Dinner – 350 people – horrendous & scary but survived!
All new experiences are a learning opportunity – whether good or bad, learn from them!
I have learned to: Never assume that technology will always work
Online Facilitation course – could not log in due to conflicting program on computer
Netmeeting with ACE group – could not use webcam and talk at same time due to lack of internet speed
Bridgit demonstration at Education Forum – no phone line to have voice communication
Networks – What I have learned Be proud of your networks, nurture them and not
be afraid to use them – they are your own and a most valuable resource
Value others networks and not abuse their generosity
Be generous with your knowledge Never be afraid to ask – the worst case scenario is
NO!
I have learned that in general: Everyone has skills – recognise, value &
share them Opportunity sometimes knocks quietly – be
prepared to act on what you thought was a knock as you may not hear it again
Compromise does not mean second best - it means opening up greater opportunities
I have learnt to be flexible as not everything always goes to plan
You don’t know how it will work until you try
Ultimately what’s the worst thing that can happen – it doesn’t work!
Learn from the experience and then work out how it can be made better!
The Loser says “It may be possible, but it’s too difficult”
The Winner says “It may be difficult, but anything is possible”
Let us all think and act like WINNERS!
