TRAINING OF KEY RESOURCE PERSONS UNDER RMSA ON “THINK IT OVER PROJECT” OF ALL DISTRICTS AT SIEMAT SHIMLA, DIET MANDI AND DIET KANGRA AND DHARAMSHALA W.E.F. 30.07.2013 to 04.10.13

Knowledge is attained through the process of learning which goes on throughout the life. Learning pertains to understanding of reality and act accordingly for the achievement of better ends of life. Thus the thrust of Education or Learning at School or child-level should be more centered towards realistic or empirical approach so as to lead individual towards knowledge for realization of better ends of life. In present era of globalization where India as a young nation is emerging as one of the significant drivers of world economy, it is also facing problems like socio-cultural unrest, violence, unemployment a decline in moral values etc. Another important aspect is that the teacher’s job is much less in just handing over the readymade truths, but much more in becoming an advisor, a facilitator and a guide to increase self confidence and inner strength of students. It is indeed commendable that the State Project Office of RMSA launched the ‘Think it over Project’ on pilot bases in 68 schools and found remarkable change. It reposes confidence on teachers’ capability to find out solutions for the learning problems by sitting together and carrying out research while getting training and teaching. This project ‘think it over project’ under RMSA is being implemented through general training. It is basically a lesson study method based on guiding principles of 10 points. The guiding principles are as under:

Universal access, equality, equity, social justice and relevance. Challenges Critical thinking Confidence, creativity and clarity of thoughts Education for life To increase skills, qualities and reflective learning in of students. To build certain attitudes, behaviors needed for efficient learning performance.

Ten Points:-

1. When I go to a class as teacher am I clear about the objectives why I am transacting a particular lesson? For instance the lesson 3rd in class 9th or the lesson 5th in 10th class.

2. In my class there are students of different learning backgrounds; do I plan how I am going to achieve these objectives? If yes, do I take into consideration the differences amongst the students, if yes, how?

3. When I am in the classroom do I give opportunity to the students to have an experience which will challenge them to think?

4. On the basis of such thinking do I allow the room to the students to reflect on what they

have experienced and to construct their own ideas based on that?

5. Based on No. 4 above, how do I ensure the participation of every child in the class in the whole process?

Page 3: THINK IT OVER PROJECT Reportedumis.hp.gov.in/Application/uploadDocuments/content/Report-RMS… · No. of participants Venue of Training Coordinator for Training from State 1 30th

6. My class has a large number of students, how do I take care of all this for such a large number of students?

7. My class is very small, but the learning has to be adequate, what do I do?

8. Do I keep scope for consolidation of what concepts, learning the children have

constructed themselves in the class?

9. Do I evaluate the children in the class immediately after the complete lesson transaction or do it later toward the month or year end and how? Do I involve the students in evaluation process?

10. Based on 9th point what strategy do I adopt for ensuring learning amongst the students

whose learning level is less hat the average in the class.

As per the guiding principles of “Think it over Project” a comparative survey was conducted on June 10, 2013 in Science, Maths and English by SCERT in 68 uncontrolled and 68 uncontrolled schools. The trends in result reflected an elated state as the results of the survey shows that controlled schools performed better than uncontrolled schools.

Findings of the Study & Recommendations of SCERT

• The results of the comparative study conducted in the controlled and Un-Controlled Schools show that there is a significant improvement in the performance of the student in controlled schools where the topics covered were taught according to the new strategy under the project “Think It Over”.

• It has also been observed that in all the three areas, Mathematics, Science and Reading (English), students of Controlled schools have performed better as compared to those of un-controlled schools.

• The average percentage of performance in all the three areas and in all the districts (11 Districts except Lahul & Spiti) is higher than that of un-controlled schools.

• Though it was a pilot study and assesses the performance of the students based on the teaching activity conducted in one month’s period, yet it provides vital inputs to plan the process of teaching and learning in the classroom situation.

Page 4: THINK IT OVER PROJECT Reportedumis.hp.gov.in/Application/uploadDocuments/content/Report-RMS… · No. of participants Venue of Training Coordinator for Training from State 1 30th

•In the controlled schools where the Heads of the school and the Teachersconcerned were involved in the process of preparing a teaching strategy throughlesson plans, the outcome has improved significantly.

•Preparation of Model lesson plans by a selected group of teachers throughdiscussions and deliberations has definitely shown the way to improve theclassroom transaction thereby making it more interesting and effective for thestudents.

•This technique has definitely involved the teacher in designing and developinginnovative methods of teachings and learning thus clearly making a paradigmshift from the traditional ways of teaching and learning.

•Finally, the study has indicated that the strategy of involving committed andpassionate teachers in developing and designing of useful and effective Teaching-Learning tool (Lesson Plan) can definitely improve the classroom transactions ofthe teachers thereby benefiting the students as a whole.

•This strategy can be a step forward in bringing Quality in Education-which is theNeed of the Hour.

On the bases of report it was decided by SPO to launch the programme in the whole State through general training. For this Key Resource Persons were trained by SPO at State Level. OBJECTIVE OF THE TRAINING:-

Specific objectives were as following:

1. To familiarize the participants with ‘Think it Over’ project to increase reflective learning, skills (reference, research, analyses, synthesis), qualities (leadership, time management, motivation) of students through lesson study method.

2. To enable participants to develop Lesson Plans including many concepts like Defining objectives, mind-mapping, group-learning, diagnostic-teaching etc.

3. To equip the participants with methodology and pedagogy to increase active-learning, learning by doing.

4. To equip the participants familiarize about the use of computer to make PPT of Lesson Plans.

Themes The ability to research, reference, analyse and draw your own conclusions is the fulcrum of the new pedagogy. Experience, Reflection, Application to achieve one’s goal, Consolidation and to develop one’s knowledge and to participate in the society.(Knowledge, understanding, application & skill level). To impart such training programme which brings about an attitudinal change in participants and opens his mind to various concepts as; 1. To enable the young to meet the future challenges. Life these days is competitive, complex

and there is less emotional support than the earlier times. To prepare emotionally strong and intelligent individuals.

2. Critical thinking is needed for solving various life problems. Preparing the students to analyze reason and communicate their ideas effectively.

3. To develop Confidence, creativity and clarity of thoughts, the basic characters of an educated being. Every student should have their unique solution to the problems.

4. Changes these days are so fast that one lags behind if one doesn’t keep pace. To develop skills that are needed so as to enable students to adapt to the changes of life effectively.

5. Education is for life and life is linked to the society. Linking the student to the society through our education?

6. To develop attitudes, behaviors needed for efficient learning performance. 7. The information/ knowledge these days is so vast that even if one tries her best, all

information on one topic can’t be given. To enable students to synthesize knowledge given to theme.

8. Stresses on concept building of students. The concepts remain separate in different compartments which allow little room for knowledge linkage and continuity. This causes a break in learning.

9. The interest of the student gets dissipated when he/ she is exposed to routine memorization of the concepts. To expose students to different challenges so that students feel involved.

10. The student’s mind develops better thinking, analyzing skills when it is made to think. Mental faculties of the child do not develop critical thinking skills unless this freedom is given . A set pedagogy will be given to whole of state which will further be improved by big team of teachers.

11. Totally practical training more and more involvement of the teachers, heads.
