Last month we ran something a little different on our front page and it caused quite a stir. The image from Essential Aids Quadrosenior campaign caught the imagination and, as you will read in an item in this month’s magazine, provided the company with some pretty impressive results too.

It’s another example of how much free publicity you can generate if you have a news item that we can run for you and so if you are doing something different, interesting or successful, why not get in touch?

Getting in touch is exactly what the team at Recare did when they invited their local MP to open a new showroom. As you can see from the front page this month, it just so happens that their MP is also the PM and so, as you might imagine, they were delighted when he agreed to attend. It just shows, if you don’t ask…you don’t get!

Recare held its official opening of a new clinic, showroom and offices in Long Hanborough, Oxfordshire with the Prime Minister doing the honours and cutting the ribbon. The Rt Hon David Cameron is MP for Witney, the constituency in which Recare is based.Richard Holland-Oakes, Managing Director of Recare and his team, Tina Holland-Oakes, James Holland-Oakes, Andrew Oakes, Tom Jephcott and Kate Austin welcomed over 60 guests including family, friends, clients, manufacturers and suppliers from the mobility industry.

The company was launched six and a half years ago at the start of the recession on the family dining room table and has moved to new 5,000sq foot premises.

The Prime Minister praised Recare’s achievements before being shown around and seeing the Recare range and having a demonstration of the Re-Walk exoskeleton suit. He also signed a book entitled Wounded “ Legacy of War” endorsed by Hans George Nader, owner of Otto Bock, about the war veterans and their disabilities, before cutting the ribbon for the official opening.

Richard says that the move was necessary due to continued growth. “We have grown substantially since we launched and were working out of four different locations and so it was time to bring everything together. We were

both delighted and surprised to get the Prime Minister to the opening but when we sent in an email to his office, we had a response within 20 minutes to say that he would like to do it. He spent a good deal longer with us than was planned too.”

The Recare business has been built on offer a high-end, specialist service as Richard explained. “We have two parts to the business, the usual local retail service and the high-end products. The retail side accounts for around 20% of the business, but the bulk of it is the specialist side. A lot of our business comes through word of mouth and I think we have built a solid reputation in the marketplace that attracts customers from all over the UK when they are looking for something more complex and they want to have someone advise them that they can trust.”

After publishing well over 200 magazines, there are still hundreds of companies out there that are yet to send us their first piece of news to cover. The companies that do send us their latest news, know just how profitable it can be to do so.Here’s the latest example of that. Our front page in January caused a bit of a stir as it was a little unusual. Polly Eden of Essential Aids, told us what the reaction was like after the magazine appeared.

“Since our ‘Quadrosenior’ campaign was featured inside and on the front cover of January’s THIIS magazine we’ve had a brilliant response, with a huge amount of positive feedback from within the industry and on social media. A good example of this is that when we tweeted the THIIS front cover it then generated retweets that enabled us to reach almost 10,000 extra people to potentially connect to.”

Polly added: “We’ve also seen an increase in followers on Facebook and Twitter and within a couple of days of posting the THIIS front cover

on Facebook, we reached twice the number of followers that we currently have due to people sharing the image. Featuring in the magazine really has helped to raise our company’s profile, so a massive thanks to THIIS for giving us such great coverage.”

So, what are you waiting for, why not send us your news. Or, if you have a story that you believe is worth telling, call us to arrange a simple and quick telephone interview and we’ll write it for you!

Over the Christmas period and in to the New Year, many businesses in the North of the country faced a problem which is almost impossible to predict or protect against; flooding. After such a disaster strikes, understanding what should be the first step on the road to recovery can be difficult and there are many risks and precautions which should be taken into account prior to starting.

The HSE has issued guidance following widespread severe flooding to help employers safely get their business up and running again as the waters recedes. It covers details such as:

• How can I minimise the risks from floodwater?• How can I dry my premises safely?• What about the electrical safety of the building and

any equipment?• How can I clean up my premises?• What hazards do I need to be aware of when

cleaning my premises? You can read the full advice on the

HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/business/recovering-your-business.htm

What about dealing with flood claims? However well prepared you may be, it is always very distressing to have to deal with the aftermath of a flood, not to mention the recovery process, as you begin to assess the damage and how you might get back on your feet again.

At some point, you will probably need to involve your insurance brokers or company and for many, this is a task fraught with uncertainty. These days, however, for the most part, the process is made as painless as it can be. The broker will usually be able to take some details and get the insurance company involved, monitoring progress as things move along.

If you are direct with an insurance company, they will usually put you on to their claims department to help manage the claim. One advantage of a broker is that you will quite often be dealing with one person that you know to speak to, whereas with an insurance company, it can be more haphazard with a large department of staff.

Loss adjusters may be involved. These are people employed by the insurance company to work out whether the claim is covered and how much should be paid out, effectively the eyes and ears of the insurance company. They may come out to site, or they may not. They can also arrange for things like alternative accommodation if covered and dehumidifiers to remove water. Usually a larger loss will trigger an attendance. They are required to be impartial and independent, but are paid by the insurance company. Their decision will

usually be relied upon by the insurance company, but is not binding in law. It can be challenged.

Loss assessors can sometimes also be involved. These are people who act upon your behalf, effectively doing the same job as the loss adjuster, but from your point of view. They will make a charge based upon how

When things go wrongFollowing the disastrous flooding in the North of the UK at the end of 2015 and into early 2016, ICB’s Risk Manager Simon Cutmore provides some useful tips about what to do should the worst happen.

The road to recovery

much they can get from the insurance company, which you will have to pay. It may mean you get a bit more, it may not. Often, a broker (if you have one) will be able to do a similar job for no charge.

Both adjusters and assessors will likely ask you to provide documentation relating to the loss to prove it to the insurance company. This may be receipts, warranties, photographs of items or similar. It is always a good idea to take a selection of photos of your house or business and store them in the cloud or on a flash drive to help show how the premises were laid out pre loss as well as recording valuable items.

Settlement of claims will vary in method, but insurers have the right to repair, replace or reinstate as they see fit. Often it will be via replacement through a high street

chain and the bill will be settled direct, perhaps with you having to pay the excess to the supplier.

BES Rehab Ltd has acquired DCS Joncare Limited, the Abingdon based supplier of Paediatric and Adult Assistive Technology products. By joining forces, BES and Joncare can now offer a wider range of positioning, seating, bathing, and pressure care solutions for children and adults.

Joncare manufactures its own paediatric range of solutions and has been a well-respected brand in the paediatric sector for 37 years since its formation, under John Prout’s (former Managing Director) guidance.

Acquiring Joncare has given BES the opportunity to build its presence further in the paediatric market, and at the same time enter the mobility arena with its market leading pressure care solutions through Joncare’s mobility outlet.

John Prout said: “After working for 37 years I feel that now is an appropriate time to pass on the baton. I am particularly pleased that its new home is within the BES Rehab group as their similar longstanding reputation in the sector will help secure the successful future development of both elements of the group.”

BES Managing Director Barend ter Haar added: “We have known John Prout and DCS Joncare for many years and have admired its product range and business culture. We will be maintaining its base in Oxfordshire and looking

to expand the activities of both operations for the benefit of all our combined customers.”

Stiltz Lifts has expanded its UK operations and opened a new office in Leeds. The company’s new base is headed up by industry specialist Michael Loftus, who has more than 20 years of experience in the mobility market. His previous roles have included National Sales Manager for Acorn Stairlifts, he was a founding Director of Companion Stairlifts and also a UK Director at Handicare.

According to the company, Michael has a wealth of direct sales knowledge and aims to drive Stiltz Lifts and its ambitious consumer sales plans forward.

The decision to open a new office in the centre of Leeds is a result of the company quadrupling

sales after introducing its unique range of home lifts to UK in 2011.

The new Leeds office supports the company’s headquarters in Wokingham, Berkshire. The company moved to a new HQ in 2014 after outgrowing its previous premises.

Stiltz Director of Business Development Lachlan Faulkner told us: “The base in Leeds will help us service our growing trade and referral customers. Michael and his team are already doing a great job. He has two decades of experience in the industry and will help take us to the next level.”

The RollerScoot has been around for a number of years now and spent many of those years in development. But now it’s on the market and the question that retailers have probably been asking themselves, about a product that is a little different is – Is it selling?Well, yes it is and what makes a difference when you get a sale is, as we have written many times, to get a testimonial too.

Claire Allchin of Kent sent a glowing testimonial recently to re-inforce the company’s claim that the Rollerscoot is a product that will sell, is selling and has plenty of potential.

Claire says that the Rollerscoot has changed her life. She suffers from Fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome in both legs, Myalgia Encephalopathy, Degenerative Disc Disease, Ankylosing Spondylosis and a myriad of other conditions.

She says that, as someone whose pain increases 10-fold when seated, getting about has been a big problem with only chairs and scooters available. Claire says: “My medical conditions affect me in a way that it is actually better and more comfortable for me to be standing up, it is so painful for me to sit down, I get the most excruciating pain in my hips and spine when they come into contact with anything. My knees are at their most painful when they have to be bent to accommodate a sitting position.”

She added: “I purchased a RollerScoot believing it would be a gimmick and that although in theory it ticked all of the right boxes, that after all of these years and all of the ‘let downs’ that this new machine would just collect dust in the corner with the rest of the junk! How wrong I have been.”

She enthuses: “The RollerScoot has opened doors to me that have been shut for years. It is so easy to store as it’s so small. I store mine on its end by my front door and it also charges there which means it’s easy to just grab and go.”

The question for retailers I guess, is how many

Claire’s do you have in your own area who may well feel the same about a product that is starting to gain traction.

Rollerscoot Managing Director, Ian Gray gave us an update on the company. He told us: “It’s around a year since the product went into full production and we have around 100 now out there in the marketplace with around 25 retailers promoting it around the UK. We are looking to double our UK dealer network this year and trade has commenced within the European Union too. With the USA Patent now also granted, we are also looking for US companies to partner up with this year. Development of a more robust RollerScoot derivative has just begun which will be suitable for greater outdoor use as well as for the rental and commercial markets too.”

Drive Medical UK launched their official twitter account @DriveMedicalUK in February 2014 and the company says that it has seen its online following grow more than any other distributor within the UK homecare and rehabilitation industry.*Drive believes that the popular social networking site has allowed it to reach both current and new customers through a new form of communication for the organisation.

Although Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey’s own open view of Twitter is ‘short bursts of inconsequential information’, Drive Medical UK, like other companies, would disagree. The company’s tweets range from news of product launches and company facts, to details of staff climbing the three peaks for charity.

Helen Wakefield, Drive Medical’s Marketing Project Manager told us: “It has created a much more public face for the company and it seems the more personal the information is, the more impact it has online.”

“Our main aim is to post content that will create the most interest” Helen added. “Whether it be a tweet that is funny, news worthy, serious or simply something which our customers and followers can relate to, the most important thing is for our organisation to engage with the individual. Platforms such as Twitter, allows us to reach more customers and consumers as well as our own employees than ever before.”

And, as Helen tells us, the company likes to get everyone involved. “We like to involve our Twitter followers and staff heavily in the content

used for the site. The recent “Spotted!” tweets which attract a lot of attention are details of Drive Medical products which our employees or customers have spotted in films, adverts or being used by celebrities. A recent example of this was one of our wheelchairs being used in an episode of BBC 1’s ‘Casualty’ primetime on a Saturday evening.”

With a worldwide total of 300 million active monthly users on Twitter, the potential for Drive Medical and their social network is huge. But will the company ever #trendontwitter? That, according to Helen, is the aim!

The ERGO Space seat wraps around the user’s body, positioning the back just 50mm from the wall - 60mm closer than on the regular ERGO. In addition, the Space backrest is shorter than the standard ERGO seat, eliminating any clash with the user’s shoulder blades.

By seating the user further back towards the wall, any potential overhang of the feet or knees is reduced. Essential space is reclaimed, allowing safe operation of the stairlift.

Manufacturer survey prompts new CPD sessionsRepose Furniture is planning to provide OTs with new CPD sessions, delivered by Kate Sheehan, one of the UK’s leading OTs. The accredited sessions are being developed following the results of a recent survey, which found only 44 per cent of occupational therapists would be willing to recommend a specialist seating manufacturer to their clients.

Repose is also building a CPD session exclusively for its distributor network. The CPD training sessions are set to be rolled out over the next few months across a number of dates and locations to suit OTs.

After a long career, it’s time to say goodbye

One of the visitors to Trade Days last year was saying his farewells to the many people in the industry that he had worked with, competed against and spent many a long evening in various hotel bars discussing everything from the state of rugby (and more particularly Welsh rugby) and what was happening in the marketplace.Harmar Roberts has called time on a career that has seen an interesting journey from the production line of one of the very first big companies in our marketplace to become a very recognised, respected and well-liked Director of Roma Medical.

Harmar became involved in the industry when it looked a lot different to how it looks these days – in the 1960’s. “I got involved in the industry by mistake really” he told us. “I was considering joining the Police. My Sister-In-Law was working for Zimmer Orthopaedic and she told me about a temporary position on the wheelchair production line. At the time the company was manufacturing wheelchairs for the American business, Everest & Jennings.”

Harmar put plans to become a Policeman on hold as he started to take on more responsibility, becoming an assistant to the Wheelchair Manager and then a Product Manager for the company.

That’s when he started to travel on behalf of the business, beginning an adventure that has seen him visit a large number of countries and be present at a huge number of exhibitions around the world. In fact, it could well be that he has stood on more exhibition stands over the years than anyone else!

“I remember travelling to Australia very early on” he recalls. “I ended up travelling to places such as Iraq, Iran, Japan and many others over the years as the marketplace was developing.”

Harmar was also involved with what was probably the very first powered product to be produced. “In those early days, Zimmer produced a powerchair, although it was very different to the products we see today of course. It was probably the first powered product to go into Stoke Mandeville hospital, but, of course, it kept breaking down as we were learning all the time how we needed to design them. There were some real horror stories when it came to getting it wrong in those early days. We even used to send out dry batteries with acid separately so that people used to have to add the acid themselves.”

The name Zimmer is used widely to describe walking frames, but, back in the 60’s, it was a substantial company which then became known as Carters before Invacare took over the

business. He was with the different companies for a total of 22 years before making the move to work with the smaller, but expanding, Days Medical.

“Invacare didn’t really get it right initially when it moved into the UK” Harmar explained. “The company had the backing of the very large and successful American operation of course and so had time to adapt, but it was that that point that I was looking for a change.”

That’s the time when Harmar covered an awful lot of miles over a few years in the UK. “When I was working for Days Medical I went out on the road and there hadn’t been anyone visiting customers for years and so I was popping up all over the place” he remembers. “I think I was at pretty much every exhibition that took place in those days and people used to see me so often; they thought that I was the boss of the company! I was away from home a lot as you can imagine with just one person covering the whole of the UK.”

Days Medical grew rapidly as Harmar explained: “Days was one of the first companies to go over to Taiwan to explore whether products could be manufactured there. Everest & Jennings was already doing business out there and we followed. I had touched on engineering with my role as Product Manager and so it was interesting to be involved in that process and give advice in the early days to some of the companies that have gone on to produce huge quantities of products over the years in our marketplace.”

Harmar has seen thousands of new products hit the marketplace and believes that a number of the best advances were created by the small team at Roma Medical which has been his ‘business home’ for the final period of his career. “I think that there was such a small team at Roma, coming up with the ideas, was a real advantage. It meant we could make decisions and get things done very quickly. We were taking the ideas to Taiwan and we knew what we wanted to achieve. A lot of the development work took place in the UK.”

Products in the past that have impressed him have been the first rear wheel drive scooter, produced by Invacare, the first titanium wheelchairs that were first seen at the Stoke Mandeville wheelchair games (the pre-cursor to

the Paralympics) and some of the big German powerchairs that were developed in the 1980’s by companies such as Meyra and Orthopedia. “I always thought that the products that came out from Meyra were very impressive and the structure of the company and people who worked in it were excellent too. They were, of course, market leaders for some time, but sadly no longer and so it’s a lesson to all companies about the challenges of staying at the top of the tree.”

One of the periods that Harmar would rather not remember in too much detail was when Roma Medical got caught up in an OFT investigation into the industry a couple of years ago. It’s clear that he feels aggrieved at the outcome of the report and also that the company didn’t get the support that he feels it should have done at that time. “We seemed to have been singled out and we must have spent over £200,000 defending ourselves at what was a difficult time. At the end of the day we were simply trying to implement a policy that many in

Page 36: Thiis feb 2016 web

36 www.thiis.co.uk

the industry felt was right to protect end-users and it cost us a lot in both money and time.”

Harmar does worry about the constant move to online sales and asked whether he believes the industry should be regulated more, he replies with a very firm “Yes, I think it is going to have to go that way I’m afraid.”

On a brighter note, Harmar takes away a great number of good memories from his time in the industry and one of his most memorable moments came not so long ago. “I was very proud that we at Roma were the suppliers of the chairs for the Great British rugby wheelchair team at the Invictus Games (supported by Prince Harry). We supplied 48 chairs and it was a real team effort from everyone in the company.”

John Dalton, former owner of Days Medical Ltd told us: “When Harmar accepted my invitation to join me at Days Medical in 1985 little did I realise that our relationship would last for so long. Harmar formerly worked for a competitor and we had run into each other at exhibitions here in the UK and a number of overseas countries. Our first overseas trip together was to Tokyo in Japan in 1986, at that time he was at the peak of his fitness and when not at work would spend as much time as possible in the

gym lifting weights, as a result he possessed a magnificent physique which he proudly showed off to all he came into contact with.”

John added: “One evening we were having a few drinks in a bar in the Rapongi district of Tokyo and a few of the European lads were having arm wrestling contests. Harmar was in his element and joined in the competition expecting to wipe the floor with all of them. In the bar that night was a Finnair pilot who we found out later was an Olympic oarsman. After Harmar had disposed of a few of the contestants it was time for the Finnish pilot to have a go and despite Harmar’s obvious strength he was defeated and had to buy the guy a pint. That was more painful than losing the contest.”

“Several years later we were in Holland for the Medica Exhibtion and our local agent took 10 of us for an Indian Meal. We allowed our host to order for us and a selection of dishes duly arrived. Where food is concerned Harmar’s appetite is legendary. We all served ourselves and someone asked for some rice, our host had ordered enough rice for 10 persons but Harmar had scooped the entire portion onto his plate and was busy adding to the pile with other types of Indian food. We all fell about

laughing at Harmars plate which resembled a volcano. He cleared the lot needless to say.”

John concluded: “Where loyalty and hard work is concerned Harmar is second to none, there are many more tales and experiences I have been lucky enough to share with Harmar, we travelled the world together and I wish him a long, active and healthy retirement.”

Looking back, Harmar says: “We had some great times, especially at the exhibitions on those early days. It was a case of working hard and playing hard, as many who were involved at the time will remember. I could still be in the business, but at 71 it’s time to move over and let the younger guys bring in their ideas. I’m very conscious that we have seen a number of companies in our marketplace go stale and not move with the times and it’s not ended up well for them.”

However, he ends with: “I said to the guys at work, I’m always available”. So, don’t rule out seeing Harmar on an exhibition stand in the future!

Does advertising work in THIIS magazine. This is what Julian Cobbledick of Assistive Partner thinks…“We supply a range of software for healthcare. Since our company’s formation in 2007, Assistive Partner has grown consistently and profitably each year. Somehow, all of that growth has been driven by word of mouth and referral (with the odd successful tender thrown in).

Like any expanding organisation though, to continue the momentum, there has inevitably come a time when we have had to invest in some limited promotional activity. Our first attempt has been very successful and has yielded an excellent return on investment.

And it’s thanks to THIIS magazine. Our first series of three advertisements has resulted in a number of high quality leads and several

sales. So we have decided to extend the THIIS advertising campaign, try a few new offers in DealON! and generally embark on increasing our marketing efforts on several fronts.

I can honestly say that our experience clearly shows that advertising to mobility retailers in THIIS gets results. Thank you.”

A subsidiary of Millbrook Industries, Ultimate Healthcare, has launched a new active range of dynamic and alternating pressure care mattresses. The company says that the new range of 10 alternating mattresses aims to reset the benchmark on quality in the pressure care sector, taking into account the company’s receipt of quality standard ISO13485 in 2015.

Previously a reseller and manufacturer for a number of pressure care brands, Ultimate Healthcare reviewed its design and manufacturing processes over an 18 month period, as part of the ISO 13485 procedure to certify the mattresses in the product range as Class IIa medical devices.

A key change that the company made to its premises in preparation for the ISO certification was to install a specially-constructed testing area. Several test benches are sited on a new mezzanine floor, where each mattress undergoes a thorough testing process to verify the quality.

Managing Director Lee French explains: “In a sector where the majority of our competitors are Class I (self-certified), we were keen to make a

difference. So we have completely overhauled our development processes in line with ISO 13485 and we are now analysing market trends and feedback data and responding to actual customer demands. This is how the whole industry should be working but few can honestly say they are working this way. So, we’re proud to be among the first to put our flag in the ground, make this claim and be able to substantiate it with Class IIa certification for our pressure care mattresses.”

Lee says that further product ranges are due to be introduced over the next 1-2 years, with these enhanced product features becoming standard across the range.

Former Managing Director of stairlift company MediTek, Phil Rice, recently made a career-changing move when he took over retailer Anglia Stairlifts. It came as Phil was looking for a new challenge after working in MediTek since 1998 when it was then a newly formed company with just 5 people in total.

Back in 1998, Phil had to learn quickly many aspects of the stairlift industry and was involved on the shop floor, in research and development, technical support, logistics and sales.

In 2006 he was appointed to the board as Managing Director and steered the company through a period of growth and success. Notable achievements were growing the company by over 500%, winning a number of prestigious awards and accolades, the relocation to new premises and the company’s entry into overseas markets including Europe, Australia and North America.

By 2014 Phil felt he had achieved all he could at MediTek and explains what prompted him to make a move. “After the completion of the move to the new factory in Newton Aycliffe, overseeing the new manufacturing changes and the entry into Europe and North America I felt there was little else for me to achieve and wanted new challenges.”

When he discreetly put out the word he was seeking new commercial challenges it wasn’t long before he received a number of offers. “There were a number of attractive offers I was musing over, but during the summer I was approached with an offer to acquire a business. This was a most exciting opportunity and offered the right mix of challenges and rewards I was looking for.”

The business in question was Anglia Stairlifts. Established in 2002, Peterborough based, Anglia Stairlifts has a good reputation and a number of well-established council contracts.

“I was very impressed with what I saw in the business; there is a good and knowledgeable team and it was easy to convince myself this was the opportunity I wanted. What was harder was raising the finance to make the acquisition.”

But raise the money he did. The business was acquired in August 2015 and Phil wasted no time getting stuck in. “Since then I’ve overseen a move to new premises in Yaxley and invested in a new showroom, IT systems and bigger warehousing capacity. Anglia Stairlifts covers a large geographical area and has big potential, so we need to have the right infrastructure in place to maximise the potential the region offers.”

Growing the company’s existing stairlift

business isn’t the only thing on Phil’s agenda. “Anglia has a good reputation and solid

pedigree as a supplier of stairlifts and hoists in the region and we maintain good working relations with all the quality stairlift suppliers including Platinum, Access BDD and Handicare. However, to grow the business I felt we needed to widen the product offering so we can offer a more comprehensive and holistic range of solutions to our customers’ needs. We have already started that process adding through-floor lifts, public access lifts, wheelchair lifts, bathlifts and other mobility products such as the Happylegs Seated Walking Machines and B-Warm Heated Seat Covers.”

The product range isn’t the only thing Phil is looking to increase either. Job creation is also a key part of the expansion process. “The company will need additional staff as we grow and I’ve been working with Peterborough Regional College with the view to appoint three apprentices to cover business administration, accounting and train up an additional installation engineer. In addition to this, we are also looking to recruit qualified engineers and sales personnel too.”

The company can be contacted on 01733 857421. The website is at www.anglia-stairlifts.co.uk

Research led by Alberto Esquenazi, MD, the Director of the Gait & Motion Analysis Laboratory at MossRehab, is the first to study the effects of joystick control position for wheelchair users. Initial data utilizing pressure mapping, dynamic electromyogram, 3-D kinematics and patient subjective report, shows central driving has multiple physiological benefits over traditional armrest mounted joysticks.

MossRehab is a member of the Einstein Healthcare Network, the largest independent medical center in the Philadelphia region.

Dr Esquenazi reports on his research: “Traditional Power Wheelchairs (PWCs) use an armrest mounted joystick controller. Such devices force a change in body posture and weight distribution with deleterious effects over time. When operating a PWC with an armrest mounted drive control, the user often leans on the armrest where the joystick is mounted in order to improve drive control. The long term consequences for wheelchair users manipulating a joystick with repetitive motions while seated in awkward postures will often present in the form of muscular skeletal conditions, and be accompanied by pain attributed to inappropriate seating support.”

The study says that prolonged sitting in a wheelchair exposes a person to a high risk of dangerous and debilitating pressure ulcers and indicates the risk is compounded by driving a PWC with an armrest mounted joystick.

The Active Controls Center Drive System used in the study was developed to allow central mounting for PWC joysticks and alternative drive controls. The system is modular and easily

removed for access to the seat. Bilateral gel pads provide secondary support surfaces for the hands, wrist and lower arms to facilitate drive control.

Dr Esquenazi adds, “Using a centre position control, the operator is in a more intuitive and functional position that aligns the visual field with the centre of the chair’s travel path. Other benefits for PWC users include better postural alignment and weight distribution.”

You can see more about the study at https://gallery.mailchimp.

At Trade Days, one of the seminars was all about Bar-coding. It’s an important issue for both suppliers and retailers and the session explained why you need to grasp the nettleTo get his point across, as part of the seminar, Julian read out a letter that he had written….to himself aged 75. It paints an interesting picture of the future and we thought that you might like to read it for yourself…

LETTER FROM 2030 –DEAR JULIAN (THAT’S ME)

I am 75 now and inevitably I’ve slowed down a bit. In fact, I’m now in need of some of the equipment that you spent the best years of your life promoting.

But in my street, I’m the baby. Fifty houses in Ten Ashes Lane and 30 of them have stairlifts! 27 of them have residents over 90 and the same number have care workers visiting every day.

So, what is most fascinating is the level of technology. It’s just said on the news that less than 2% of all transactions are cash now.

The big changes started way back in 2015/16. The phrase “Omni” was everywhere. Forget the strife and trouble in the world back then – less said about that the better.

Let’s concentrate on positives in life and business.

So, Omni-channel. The internet was still only 20 years old then. Amazon had 69bn in online sales compared to Walmart 11bn.

Walmart wanted to dominate every channel or route to market and stepped up the shopping synergy.

Anyway, by 2018 they had nearly caught up. Employees had decreased from 2.1m to 1.2m, yet sales had rocketed. It was a switch from barcodes to microchips that did it. Auto replacement – click & collect…. They released huge amounts of cash. So they invested. And suddenly there were stores in third world countries – and they reused the old barcode kit – and employment rocketed – and peace broke out in war torn areas.

The world started to change. That see-saw of wealth began to tip the other way. Between 2015 – when

a shocking 10% of people had 86% of all wealth and 2025; lots of strange things happened.

• Philanthropy became really fashionable

• Robotics started to replace people, but they stayed just as well off

• because of the guaranteed minimum income introduced throughout Europe and America in 2019.

Unusual technique gets the point across

“Fifty houses in Ten Ashes Lane and 30 of them have stairlifts!”

Julian Cobbledick used an unusual approach during his seminar at Trade Days, a letter he had written to his ‘older’ self

• Free time reigned in the West – and most did good with it.

• A shift in employment created an end to poverty in Africa et al; just like China had done in the previous decade or two.

• Executives were regulated so the era of pay greed was abolished.

• Pollutocrats were ostracised for using too much resource.

• Conscious capitalism was born – redistributing wealth.

There are now over 10 billion people on earth. Around half a million are bionic. Over 30% are too old to work. Healthcare has had the biggest impact. Children born after 2020 had spare parts ready – their umbilical cord was retained and genetically engineered to grow what was needed. No need for donors anymore.

Telecare and telehealth is part of everyday life now. When I visit the lavatory, my doctor gets an e-mail if there are any irregularities and I get a call telling me what to do to stay well.

Even my shoes send messages about my balance and falls risks.

Can you believe the wealth distribution swing though?? In 2015, 5 billion out of 7 billion people were in poverty. Now only 1 billion out of 10 billion are. And yet the rich are just as rich. More money than they will ever spend.

Our industry though has really thrived..… There is no longer stigma attached to independent living equipment (or A.T.) In fact most of it is quite cool. Designers were allowed free reign around 2017.

It’s weird to envisage the last century, when the state used to “free issue” things like wheelchairs, stairlifts, commodes and so on. I recall them often dominating buying power, then (with full warehouses) making it difficult to get kit!

Now whether you walk in a shopping mall, through a supermarket, watch TV or surf the web (both are wall projected using special “pixel-paint” these days. Tuned in by voice commands) – things to make living easier are everywhere. Almost all of the things talk to each other – THE “CONNECTED LIVING SPHERE” – it started with the internet of things and 5G etc. etc. It’s all joined up in a way I never thought possible.

The transformation in our sector started around 2015/2016 when healthcare equipment

retailers got serious. Shopping there grew up – barcode scanning, proper merchandising, online advice, great service – just like shopping for clothes or household appliances. No longer scruffy little mobility stores … It meant we all started to aspire to and enjoy equipment – rather than dread the day we had to use some…….

Frankly, lots of businesses went pop. But the good ones just got better and better – safe, good advice, proper expertise – trust.

Those doom and gloom nay-sayers always pushing back or grumbling about “progress” – “no need for barcodes” and so on were wrong. By a long shot!

Julian says that 2015 was a landmark 9th year for his company. He told us: “During 2015, for the first time, people started taking barcodes seriously in the retail sector too. Manufacturers are applying barcodes – and retailers are investigating the technology to utilise them – along with the excellence in CRM and automated VAT calculation that our software offers.”

“My seminar and our stand at Trade Days had an unprecedented interest from retailers which has already led to consultancy and sales of the our UNIQUS iRetailer online software. It is now in daily use in over thirty shops in England, with lots more to follow.”

He predicts at least 1.5 times growth for his business this year. “Assistive Partner is investing too – doubling the company’s server capacity and data centre infrastructure and investing tens of thousands of pounds in new hardware, additional support personnel and associated software.”

new on the market

New aid for easy ironingThe Eze-Glide is a simple new product. It’s essentially a small fitting which attaches to an ironing board (where the iron should rest for cooling) and to which the cord is fed through. The cord guide very effectively keeps the cord clear of the top and underside of the board and eradicates the issues with dragging clothing but also keeps the cord clear of trailing directly under the board.

The designers believe that the product is beneficial for wheelchair users or someone who wishes to be seated when ironing. It comes in a variety of six colours and is really easy to fit.

For more information on stocking the product, call 07747 061888 or email [email protected]

Stepless adjustment for key seat settings allows a more personal fit and the backrest can be repositioned at any time with the majority of adjustments carried out with the client seated in the chair.

A retailer has joined the Board at Stairsteady, the product that started life as a GCSE project for Ruth Amos. TPG has been one of the StairSteady’s biggest supporters and has showed its support by investing in the business and with MD, Alastair Gibbs, joining the StairSteady board.

The development follows a move in September when the StairSteady Products team took back distribution from Patterson Medical.

Alastair explained: “For us it is about the customer getting the local support, great customer service and in many cases access to other products. This is just one step in the mobility journey, but it is one of the first the customer is likely to take.”

Starting off as an idea in the classroom the StairSteady first earned Ruth ‘Young Engineer for Britain’. In December 2013 the British Healthcare Trade Association recognised it as the ‘Best Established Product/Service’.

“People don’t go from being stair able to needing a stairlift overnight” she says. “The StairSteady fills a gap, but also is complimentary to existing stair solutions. Our key focus now is to build and support our trade network which is the route we believe will grow the reach of the product.”

Alastair believes that, having run a successful retail business for some years, it is an opportunity to introduce and guide a relative newcomer to the correct, ethical selling and wholesaling of a really innovative product.

On his decision to take a role in the Stairsteady business, Alastair told us: “All too often a good product can be overlooked and an opportunity missed because the wrong guidance had been given or the wrong choices made. Whilst TPG are a major seller of stairlifts, we do often come across a number of objections to people placing an order. Things such as ‘ It costs too much’ and ‘Look how much space it takes’ are common

and can be overcome with explanation of the benefits a stairlift can bring.”

He added: “However, sometimes we are met with phrases like ‘I am not ready for the lift yet’ and ‘I will contact you again if I get worse’. In these scenarios the Stairsteady can be the ideal solution and can be viewed as a safety measure to prevent the struggle with stairs from resulting in a fall. We would suggest that it is similar to using a walking frame, just on the stairs.”

And Alastair also uses a promotion that makes sense too. “To put customers at ease we also offer to trade in the Stairsteady at some point in the future, should they feel a stairlift becomes necessary. From a commercial point of view this secures the client for the future as they must come back to you to get that trade in value.”

Ruth adds: “Alastair has sufficient knowledge of buying and selling to know what can work in this marketplace and this should give confidence to other dealers who are looking for an addition to their portfolio. For StairSteady Products, the involvement of TPG is great. What more could you want than one of your key dealers support and buy in.”

The product recently launched in Canada and the team have hopes to start distribution across Europe in 2016.

The website for the product is at www.stairsteady.net
