TNorth Atlantic fisherypro tection and inspection serviceof the Royal Danish Navy wasestablished in 1587 by a RoyalDecree and carried ou t by frigatesand other men-of-war. With onlyminor interruptions, the serv icehas operated ever since. AfterWorld War I, specially designedinspec tion ships were introdu ced ,and from 1932 sea-planes basedon the ships were used to extendthe range of inspection . Helicop­ters repla ced the sea-planes in1962. Thus the design and con­struction of the new »Thctis­class patrol frigates rest on morethan 400 years of expe rience inFaroe and Greenland waters,com bined with 30 years of ex­perience in the operation of ship­based helicopters in some of theroughest waters in the world.

In 1977. the Danish economiczone was expanded to 2(x) nauti­cal miles from the coast of Green­land and the Faroe Island s. It be­came clear that the next gener­ation of vesse ls for service inthese waters had to be faster. morelong-legged and better equippedthan the ships in service at that time.

Th e design of the »Th eti se classpatrol frigate is based on stand­ardization with existing Danishnaval eq uipment and softw are.Th e technological standardsachieved ensure reliable. safe andeconomic operations. It has beenpossible to construct the vessels

of this class at a very low price.Operating costs have also beenmarkedly reduced . due to thestandardization achieved and thehigh degree of onboard autom a­tion.

Regarding helicopter operatio ns,a study was made to determinethe influence of the length of thevessel on the ability to fly o rf andrecove r helicopters, consi de ringthe length of the waves in Atlan ticand Greenland wa ters.

The Hnll

Th e frigates have a dou ble­skinned hull up to 2 meters abovethe wa te r-line. It is subd ivided by10 bulkheads into watertightcompartme nts of such a size thatthe vessels are ab le to sustai n ahull damage up to 8 meters inlength without dangerous sta­b ility impairment. For ship pro­pulsion this mea ns tha t one en­g ine- room and the gear- room canbe water-fi lled at the same time,and the frigates will still be able to

pro ceed .

Maximum continuous speed is 20kno ts in 4 meter seas. Th e sea­keeping q ual ities allow the shipsto stand up to wind gusts of 150knots during light iee conditionsand operate in all sea conditionsat speeds of 4- 5 knots. The capa­bilities for ope rating helicoptersand rubber boat s are optimized .

TIle sh ips are fined with a PlcsseyA\VS-6 air warning radar. aTcrma Sca nter Mil navigationradar, a Furuuo FR-1505 DA na­vigation rada r and a Nobel Tech( formerly Bofors Electronic) 9 LV100 fire co nt ro l radar. ThermalImag ing Equi pmen t (FU R) willbe instal led in 1992.

Sonar eq uipmen t consists of a C­Tech hull-mou nted type CTS 36RD N. the bea m of wh ich ca n betur ned 360" and tilted from hori -

zontal to ve rtic al, and a va riabledepth sonar (VDS). type Thom ­son Sin tra T~1S 2640 »Salmon«.The latter is installed and oper­ated from under deck . An under­wate r telephone system has alsobee n installed .

The ESM system is of type Racal»Mermaid« with antennas fittedin the ma st and covering 360".The system is co nnected to an ad­van ced da ta handling system andcan. with information drawn froma comprehen sive »library« ofelectronic emi ssions. identifypractica lly all known radar types.

Two gyro systems are installed.The main system is a Litton typeLS N 505; the back-up system aSperry Mk 37/Anschlitz type 2 10.The ships are also fitted withDecca. Loran and Global Posi­tioning Sy stems for navigational
