around the world today. Each one can custom make a hot runner to fit anew mold design.

The high number of manufacturers means competition keeps prices undercontrol. Good support is also available from most of them.

Mold Makers Can Make Hot Runners

Some injection mold makers are capable of making their own hot runners.The advantage is that one company can take full responsibility of theentire mold and it reduces the hot runner price.

To make a hot runner requires standard tool making equipment such as aradial drill, cnc machining center, a surface grinder, a cylindrical grinderand a cnc lathe. All heater elements can be bought and a person qualifiedin electrical wiring can connect them to the temperature controller.

The materials required to make a hot tip hot runner are P20 for themanifold and H13 for the nozzles and insulators. The nozzle tips areusually made from a copper alloy but can also be made from H13 andthru hardened for long life.

Challenges With Hot Runners

Hot runner molds involve the use of electricity so some training will berequired for die setters and process technicians so that safety proceduresare followed.

A hot runner mold will have a bigger mold height compared to a coldrunner mold so this may limit which molding machines can be used due tothe larger physical size of the mold.

Additional Comments

The decision to use a hot runner or cold runner must be taken on a caseby case basis but the fact is that a molder having a medium to high annualquantity requirement for any particular part will benefit from a hot runnermold.

The extra cost of a hot runner will be recovered through faster cycle times,better quality parts and material savings.

The Clepco PTFE Intelligent Jacked Three, Six and Nine Element VerticalStyle Tubular Element Series is an Over-the-Side Parallel to tank heaterdesigned to offer superior performance utilizing 10 watts per square inch(1.5w/cm²) of heating capacity.

Fluoropolymer (PTFE) heaters are an excellent choice for heatingAqueous acid, alkaline, anodizing and pickling solutions up to 212F (100C). Coil heaters(Germany)

THERMO-coil coil heaters are available in various cross sections andsizes and offer high-capacity electrical heating in the tightest of installationspaces at temperatures of up to 750°C on the cartridge sheath. Theminimum bend radius of R3 to R13 (depending on the cross section)allows the use of the THERMO-coil coil heaters not only in extended orcoiled form, but in virtually every geometrical shape. An optionallyintegrated thermocouple enables precise temperature control. In nozzleheating, the THERMO-coil achieves individual power distribution throughthe specifically designed gradient of the individual coils.

Flexible tubular heaters(Germany)

The flexible tubular heaters THERMO-flex D-shape or THERMO-flexsquare are delivered ex-stock in various sizes and can be bent to fitvirtually any 2D or 3D groove using the THERMO-flex tool set, forexample. The outer sheath, made of woven pure nickel, adapts to anycurvature and presses itself evenly against the surface of the groove. Thisguarantees optimal heat transfer even when under extreme mechanicalstress.

Clamping jacket for THERMO-coil heaters(Germany)

State of the artMany state-of-the-art clamping mechanisms are designed to ensure thatTHERMO-coil heaters remain firmly clamped to hot runner nozzles.However, the majority reach their limits pretty quickly: the material losesits stability under extreme temperatures and expands, causing the coilheater to uncontrollably detach itself from the nozzle. This creates pocketsof air between the heating element and the nozzle, which makes itimpossible to keep the temperature even and can very quickly lead to thecomplete failure of the coil heater due to overheating. In addition, screwconnections, tension clamps or the complete moulding of the heatingelement mean that many of these clamping mechanisms also require agreat deal of space, which is not available in standard hot runner mouldswith little cavity spacing.

The THERMO-jacket permanently holds and clamps and is basically aslotted metal tube that firmly clamps the THERMO-coil coil heater onto thecylindrical hot runner nozzle at temperatures of up to 550°C. The materialproperties of the THERMO-jacket, together with its thin-walled design,easily and effectively solve all conventional clamping mechanismproblems

Our smart solution for effective heating is the THERMO-slide, a specialcompact heating element for hot runner systems. Unlike conventionalclamping mechanisms designed to ensure that coil heaters sit firmly onhot runner nozzles, the THERMO-slide does not quickly reach its limits.

The heating element is integrated into the clamping element by beinginserted into a thin-walled jacket and supported by slotted ferrules. Ceramic Fiber Heaters

THERMOZONES Ceramic Fiber heaters are comprised of high qualityhelically wound Fe-Cr-Al alloy resistance wire elements embedded in arigid body of vacuum-formed high temperature refractory fiber.Theseheaters produce fast, efficient, and reliable uniform heat to temperaturesof 1100°C (2012°F). Higher temperature ratings, up to 1300°C (2372°F),are available with custom design. The construction of such heaters usuallyeither in the form of rectangular or semi-cylindrical shapes.

Custom Design Heater

THERMOZONES full range heaters can be designed as according tocustomer requirement either in heating elements or heating equipmentsystem, such as heating tank, oven, circulation heating and etc. Theoperating voltage range from 110Vac to 415Vac, either in 1-phase or 3-phase. Quartz Electric Immersion Heaters

Process Technology quartz heaters are ideal for most acidic chemistriesand have metal grounded elements with quartz sheath. Up to 10 kWsingle tube or 30 kW triple tube available. Our polypropylene guards arestandard, and fluoropolymer guards available. Tube assembly, metalelement and guard sold separately, but all three must be used together.Thermal overtemperature protection standard. cULus certified and CEcompliant.

Screw Plug & Flange Immersion Heaters

Process Technology develops a wide variety of heater types and featuresto fit virtually any application. Screw plug and flange heaters in titaniumand 316 stainless, sizes from ½-inch screw plug (100 watt) to 6-inchflange (72 kW).

Quartz Infrared Radiant Heating Elements

used for curing, baking and drying applications and capable of reachingfull heat in 40 to 65 seconds. Watt densities of 50 watts per square inch (8w/cm2).

Special wattages and lengths are available to fit most ovens/panels. Alsooffered in 1/2-inch diameter tubes, three electrical terminal styles, andtemperature controls are available to be sized to match the heater. Theseelements are intended for horizontal installation only.

The efficiency of these elements offers customers an economicalalternative for replacement parts.

Magneto Coated Titanium Anode

Because of a very flexible production facility, we are able to manufactureanodes of all types: sheet, plate, mesh, wire, rod, tubular or combinationsand/or assemblies of these materials. Their size and number vary fromseveral cm2 to 2 m2 and from 1 to 10,000 pieces. The process in whichthe anodes are used determines size, shape and coating specification ofan anode.

Important parameters determining the anode design are:

◆ The electrochemical cell or installation wherein the anodes are used

◆ The process conditions, such as electrolyte composition, temperature,current density, design life, etc.

◆ Mechanical load of the anode

◆ Capacity of electrical conductivity of the base material.
