The North Allegheny Summer Academy 2014

This year North Allegheny Summer Academy will have a Pirate Fest theme. Many days will be filled with academic and cultural activities.

The following class listings are offered as our vacation specialties. Please review the outstanding classes taught by our Summer Academy instructors.

All workshops will be held at Peebles Elementary School.

SCIENCESuper Scientists Grades K & 1Argh, Matey! Come aboard the pirate’s ship and the crew will go on science adventures. A terrific scientific jour-ney for children in grades K-1! We will be making ice cream, launching bottle rockets, and making raisins dance! Learn how to create gak, do tricks with magnets, make pickles, and explore the wonderful world of water! Get ready for all sorts of experiments! There is lots of fun in store for our little scientists! Ms. Jessica Magnone, Ms. Paula Shook, and Ms. Hannah Nellis

Pirates Experiments Grades K-3Come and learn some new and creative ways to use foods from your kitchen. We will turn “spilled milk” into pretty paintings, make our own play dough and sidewalk paint, and create our own crystal sun-catchers. We’ll write secret messages using a secret ingredient. You’ll also get to make a “witch’s brew” and other concoctions that fizz, pop, and explode! We’ll even make spaghetti dance! Join us to learn some fun ways to experiment, make artwork, and plain old play with your food! Ms. Nicole Tutino

Science with a Twist Grades 2-5Calling all junior scientists! Do you like ice cream? How about launching marshmallows down the hallway? Do you think water bottle rockets would be fun to shoot up in the air on the playground? Then this is the class for you! Attend the “Wacky Science” workshop as we learn the science behind making ice cream, paper airplanes, marshmallow catapults, and bubbles of all sizes, slime, edible rock crystals, water bottle rockets, and much more! Come join us for some messy excitement! Ms. Danielle DeMay

WRITINGRockin’ Writing Grades K-4Rockin’ Writing is a writing class with a musical theme. Students can learn to write using inspiration from music. Students can also look at different lyrics of music to learn poetry, narrative, and persuasive writing. Writing pa-per can be shaped like guitars, for example, and students can have mini dance breaks. They can move to music to refresh their minds and get their blood flowing. The purpose of the writing class is to extend their thought processes while creating multiple types of writing in forms such as essays, letters, songs, and more. Ms. Taylor Furtado

ARTS AND CRAFTSDesigning, Drawing, Creating a Pirate Treasure Chest Grades K-5Ahoy pirates! Set sail with us as we create our own treasure hunt game complete with game board, game pieces, and playing cards. Imagine!-We will make a felt pirate hat and eye patch, create a pirate’s pet parrot sculpture, draw a pirate on the high seas pillow, and design a lost treasure map. Also we’ll construct a pirate ship from found objects, paint a treasure chest and make pirate coins of clay. A pirate necklace of clay, feathers, and wooden beads is a must for us to make — so make your reservation to sail and craft with us!! Mrs. Debbie Devine, Mrs. Ruth Butler and Ms. Erin Devine

CREATIVE THEATERFun on Stage Grades K-5If you enjoy expressing your playful personality and love to design, craft, create, act, and perform...then this is the stage for you. Come join us this summer to live it up and “ break a leg” by working in small groups to write your own short plays, puppet shows, design costumes, craft puppets, paint sets, and use the computer to make your show come alive. Hope to see you there because “the show must go on”. Mrs. Joyce Gongaware and Ms. April Ramsey

SPORTS Fitness Activities Grades 1-5The students will take part in a number of activities involving team sports, cooperative games, and overall fit-ness activities. The main focus will be to get the students moving while developing locomotors and non-locomo-tors skills, sports related skills, and overall fitness. READINGAmerican Girl Dolls Grades 2-5Imagine living in the past, making rag dolls, paper fans, paper flowers, sachets, bonnets, and having a tea party! You can take a peek into the past through the American Girl Dolls and enjoy each of these activities. In this class, we will create a Handbook and learn about each doll’s life and the challenges they faced. These dolls represent-ed strong, courageous, and helping girls, just like today’s girls. Join the class, have fun, and make history come alive. You do not need to own an American Girl Doll to take this class. Mrs. Carla Pottmeyer

Brain Challenges Grades 3-5Attention all survivors! Come join us for two weeks of challenges! Bring your minds and muscles and let’s put them to the test! Teams will journey through adventures testing their physical and mental abilities by participat-ing in obstacles and solving math and reading riddles and problems. Each day will bring a new challenge in order to win points to become the ultimate survivors at the end of our journey! Ms. Emily Harford and Ms. Gabrielle Scanga

MATHMath Counts Grades 3-5During these lessons, I would like to have each class start with a math journal prompt as students arrive. Les-sons would include problem solving activities utilizing the document camera to share solutions, in addition to math centers with rotating themes. These themes would include fractions, geometry, measurement, decimals, multiplication, division, etc. Each student would be given a treasure map and they would earn a “coin” for every center they successfully completed. Ms. Kerri Ruffanach

FOREIGN LANGUAGEParlez Vous Francais Grades 4 & 5Throughout this class session, students will be introduced to basic French greetings, the alphabet, numbers and colors. Moreover, they will also be exposed to the many exciting cultural facets of the French speaking world! Mrs. Kristan Buskey

MUSICMusic to the Max Grades 3-5Do you play an instrument? Do you sing in Chorus? Come join other musical friends as we set sail on a unique voyage! Fiddlers Workshop Grades 4 & 5One Week ONLY - June 16 - 20 $50.00The Junior Fiddlers workshop will introduce the younger elementary string students to the world of fiddle/blue-grass music, but at the appropriate level. Students that are presently in grades 4 and 5 can participate. (First year string students need to wait until the end of their second year.) They will use important skills introduced in their orchestra class while integrating some new skills used with the N.A. Fiddlers. We will talk about the history of fiddling, various articulations, and the form of fiddle tunes, harmony instruments and ear training. For many years the old style of fiddling has been passed down from generations aurally, or without the use of written music. Students will perform a diverse range of fiddling styles including Irish, Old Timey and more. The Jr. Fiddlers workshop is under the direction of Dennis Morton, a string teacher at North Allegheny since 1995. He is presently teaching at McKnight Elementary School. He is also the director of the N.A. Fiddlers as well as a fiddler in a local bluegrass group. Mr. Dennis Morton
