Dear TLC Family and FriendsIt is my pleasure to present Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind’s annual report to our stakeholder community. In Fiscal Year 2014-15, we experienced the culmination of a years-long dream to build a Children’s Center, Accessible Playground and Inclusive Preschool on the southern end of our 2-acre campus on Lindley Avenue. Obtaining the certificate of occupancy from the Dept. of Building and Safety gave us the permission to take a deep breath! We realized the final matching funds to a $3.2m grant that had been entrusted to us back in 2007. We plan to have Family Groups assembled on the happy playground and surrounding spaces. Some of the best learning we’ve witnessed is the way families gain knowledge from each other as they regularly get together… with tears and laughter, too!

So much of our work is government supported, yet governmental pressures seem to push hard in the opposite direction than where our mission leads. It is necessary to ask our constituencies to raise their voices whenever legislators have key budget votes in California’s statehouse; that is what we have done again this year. Despite funding challenges, our talented staff continued to innovate with popular braille and pre-braille classes, and expanded music therapy sessions for our Support Center participants. We gave our residents memorable experiences such as trips to camp, holiday celebra-tions, and opportunities to perform for appreciative audiences.

When we turned 40 in June of 2015, we thanked the hundreds of families who supported our 40th year by volunteering and attending our block-long Birthday Party and donating to TLC’s cause to serve people across the lifespan and for a lifetime.

We are deeply grateful to our friends at the Los Angeles Mid-Valley Lions Club who are our partners in expanding our free vision screening program. Together, we are regularly out in the community at health fairs, children’s expos, farmers' markets and city celebrations to offer this service to families.

Last but not least, thanks to the donors who joined the Forty for Forty Campaign for TLC’s future. You found a way to contribute forty dollars (or more!) in recognition of our first 40 years. Many families donated for the first time. Key families reached deep to make significant gifts. With your continued support, the next 40 years will be even more magnificent for the individuals we serve and we can see this happening!

Mission Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind (TLC)

is dedicated to caring for the lifetime needs of people challenged by developmental

disabilities and blindness.

VisionTLC believes in the value of each individual and strives

to improve the physical, emotional, social, and educational lives of its clients such that they are able to achieve their full potential.

HistoryFounded in 1975 by a small group of dedicated parents,

TLC became California’s first residential program to serve individuals with multiple disabilities and visual impairments. Prior to TLC, there were few options and very little support. TLC has grown significantly since its humble beginnings and now provides day, residential and early intervention services

to more than 300 individuals and their families.

Early Intervention Program (EIP)Birth to 5 years of ageEIP began with the goal of providing essential services to infants and toddlers with developmental disability and/or visual impairment in their homes. We expanded to providing therapy sessions at our new Keck Center, which opened this year and which houses a lending library, therapy rooms, motor lab, commu-nity gathering space, and accessible playground. EIP staff of professional therapists, child development and vision interventionists continue to work closely with the families who appreciate how our team of specialists navigate the therapeutic options available to their children and them.Families Served: 96

Inclusive Preschool and Center Based EIP3 to 5 years of age The newest service in our delivery system is the Inclusive Preschool for 3-to-5 year old children with developmental disabilities and/or visual impairment. Its “inclusive” description fits the welcome afforded to typically developing 3 year-olds who seek a diverse and innovative preschool education in our neigh-borhood. The Center-Based EIP is held in the Children’s Center three days a week for toddlers 18 months to 3 years of age, along with their parent or primary caregiver. Children gain readiness for preschool through developmental playtimes with other little ones and the adults who love them.Families Served: 20

Children’s After-School Program5 to 17 years of ageThis program is specifically designed to provide a supportive, recreational and nurturing environment for students between the ages of 5 and 17 who are challenged with devel-opmental disabilities and visual impairments. Schools transport CASP participants at the end of the day to our social-recreational program. It engages students in activities that are enjoyable while fostering socialization and education, includ-ing time for homework, arts & crafts, field trips, sports, year-round swimming, computer lab, and interactive learning. Families Served: 9

Programs Saturday and Adult After-School ProgramAdultsThis program provides year-round after-school and Saturday respite for families. Individuals over the age of 18 attend and participate in a wide variety of activities specifically designed to promote social and recreational needs. Participants enjoy activities that include crafts, sports, community outings, swimming, computer activities and music. The program also operates during sea-sonal breaks, as well as most holidays.Families Served: 35

Residential ProgramAdults and Seniors This program is the heart of our organization and was the impetus for our founding. We’ve grown to a total of 12 nurturing homes that provide a supportive and engaging environment for our residents. Our caregivers, residents, and inter-disciplinary professionals work in concert. Programming is delivered via an Individualized Service Plan. TLC’s residents enjoy community outings, gardening and assistance with daily living tasks. This community-style living fosters our residents to develop independence and confidence. Families Served: 80

Day ProgramAdults and Seniors TLC’s Day Program is one of our fastest growing and diverse programs. The Day Program provides a variety of classes. Participants go from class-to-class learning a variety of skills. Day Program encourages each individual’s creativity with unique classes such as art, music, and gar-dening. Our Support Center offers a slower pace and a secure experience that fosters self-confidence in a nur-turing environment. Families Served: 106
