“Bolshoe Sa-vino” airport has

switched to the summer schedule that will re-main in force till Octo-ber 25, 2008 according to the “Perm Airlines” press-centre.

“Bolshoe Savino” in cooperation with air carriers continues to ex-pand its route network increasing the number of flights both within Russia and internation-ally. This season apart from traditional destina-tions such as Antalia, Varna, Burgas, Sharm

el-Sheikh, Dubai, new routes to Tivat (Mon-tenegro), Barcelona and Heraklion will be opened. The number of flights in the direc-tion of Moscow has increased by 50% which makes 12 flights per day.

“Bolshoe Savino” is planning to launch new flights to Volgograd and Norilsk. As for the latter 2 weeks ago “Kras Air” Company refused to effect flights to Norilsk says “Perm Airlines” representative. No air-line carrier has under-

taken this route so far. Besides “Turkish

Airlines” strives to open a regular route connect-ing Perm to Istanbul. Earlier on there was a charter flight effected through “Perm Airlines” by compact with tour-ist agencies. However last year the route was closed because of low demand within shut-tler traders for whom primarily it was in-tended. Now with the increase in number of Turkish construc-tors and registration of several Russian-Turk-

ish companies in Perm flights to Istanbul may become more profitable. At the moment “Turk-ish Airlines” cannot reach the agreement on traffic rights with the Federal Agency for Air Transport “Rosa-viation”. According to the intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Turkey the authority to exercise such flights belongs to “Aeroflot”. Though it doesn’t bother “Turkish Airlines” to fly to Yekat-erinburg, Rostov, Kazan and St. Petersburg.

On April 2, after the third and the

final reading a law was issued by the State Duma to limit foreigners’ access to strategic economic branches, important for the national secu-rity of Russia.

They include 42 ar-eas such as manufac-turing and processing of some special tech-nology, nuclear, space and aircraft industries, developing, manufac-turing and sale of war equipment, as well as exploration and extraction of minerals on the territories of national significance. In other words terri-

tories where there are deposits of uranium, diamonds, nickel, niobium and precious metals as well as deposits with extrac-tion of 70 millions tons of oil, 50 billions of cubic meters, more than 50 tons of vein gold and more than 500 thousand tons of copper.

The law also ap-plies to TV and radio broadcasting though it is stipulated that strategic TV and radio companies are those that are broadcast only on the territories with the half or more of the population of a federal subject of Russia.

Q.: What is the Great Russia for you? Or do you prefer rea-soning in terms other than these?

D. MEDVEDEV:— I don’t quite like

pompous specula-tions. I believe it’s im-portant for an official, the more so someone holding constitutional jobs, to renounce pomp. One should do concrete business. But I have a personal at-titude to this. Without any doubt, Russia is a great country. First, we are really great by virtue of our his-tory and our territory. It’s very difficult, for example, to describe

a state as great, if it came into being 10 years ago and mea-sures 1,000 square kilometres. But a country with a 1,000-year-long history and occupying one-sixth of the global land-mass can only be great by definition, both in the direct and figurative sense of the word.

Second, one mustn’t glorify this greatness. One must understand what a complicated world it is that we live in and what a com-plex country Russia is – precisely by virtue of Russia being very big territorially and rather big in terms of population numbers. It’ll always be more difficult to govern a country like Russia than other countries. Even if we go over to the most advanced technologies. We understand that some decisions will have to be put into prac-

tice physically – by legwork, lorries, or planes, by negotiat-ing our difficult roads – even if we can have the use of digital communications and a global communica-tions environment. And it is clear how important infrastruc-ture is in our country.

As any normal Russian, I love my country. I love its his-tory, I love the special spiritual world that is connected with our life. But it’s rather an intimate thing. I be-lieve that this should be somewhere deep down. If a person is a normal citizen, he has a duty to love his country, for otherwise one cannot live in a State. But this must never be emphasised, for otherwise a sensa-tion of insincerity grows right away.

“Their working day is 10 hours long and they work 7 days a week. We pay them a little bit less than the Russians. And the Chinese are highly disciplined, very ef-ficient. They would do whatever you tell them to,” he said.

While the wages may be lower in Rus-sia, the Chinese are still earning more than they would in their homeland.

for the big cities full of hopes for greater opportunities. The idea of working in a local factory is hardly appealing.

The young gen-eration considers non-manual jobs as a priority.

On 27 March the governor of Sverd-

lovsk region Eduard Rossel spoke at the presidium meeting of the State Council of Russian Federation in Tobolsk, where he was invited by Dmitry Medvedev, the elected president of Russia, as a correspondent of IA REGNUM was in-formed in the Depart-ment of information policy of the governor.

The meeting tackled upon the question of «overcoming of admin-istrative barriers in the development of small business and the tax policy measures, aimed at its stimutation».

In his speech, Rossel noted that no entre-preneur can «pass through 63 different organizations», which

the existence of small and average businesses actually depend on. The governor reminded Dmitry Medvedev of the recent confer-ence in Yekaterinburg, which was dedicated to the development of the domestic medical equipment and medi-cin production. At that conference Medvedev gave instructions to solve all problems, con-cerning the licensing of insulin, which produc-tion started at Medsyn-tez plant in Novouralsk. That happened in the beginning of Febru-ary, but the problems have not been solved yet. A great deal of red tape still exists when it comes to the issue of permission for insulin production, although, already in May, the manufacturers will ten-

der for the government purchase of this essen-tial medicine. Thus, our domestic manufacturer of the medicine, which is 30% cheaper, than the imported one, will be offside.

Eduard Rossel also reminded of one more project, that was supported by every-one. The Ministry of economic development and trade of Rus-sian Federation have expressed a positive opinion, but different «coordinating» struc-tures have been hinder-ing it for 3 years. It is «Titanovaya dolyna» (Titanic valley) near Verhnyaya Salda. Com-panies from 20 leading countries of the world are ready to participate in this project, that is to say in creation of small and average enterpris-

es. The project is being decelerated, and at the same time we export not a ready product, but semi-manufactured articles made of tita-nium and we actually give 40% of titanium as a «gift» to the uSA in the form of waste after article processing.

Addressing the minister of economic development and trade Elvira Nabimyllina, the governor of Sverdlovsk suggested introducing the tax on produc-tion area surplus. In that case big factories will start getting rid of useless territories, so that small and aver-age businesses will be able to get the area for their work. The elected president supported the suggestion of the head of Sverdlovsk region.

Following the results of February, roads of Chely-abinsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Perm are consid-

ered to be the most dangerous ones.

At the end of February, Moscow and Tyumen are leaders in the rating of Russian cities with the safest roads, com-posed by the Inter-regional Social Center «for the safety of Russian roads».

Chelyabinsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Perm tail the rating list. In February, these cities got the biggest rates in the safety index.

sia-Portugal Entre-preneurship Council (RPEC) was held at the RF CCI March 31,2008.

Taking part in the session chaired by RF CCI vice-president Sergei Katyrin, apart from representatives of the interested Russian business circles, were officials from the RF Foreign Ministry and the RF Ministry for

Economic Development and Trade.

In his address of welcome Sergei Katyrin noted that at an early stage the RPEC has already succeeded in holding a number of major events aiming at establishing and main-taining partnership rela-tions. He also said that the presence of favour-able conditions for the development of business contacts, including the sustained dynamics of

the bilateral political dialogue; efficiency of activities of the Mixed Russian-Portuguese Intergovernmental Commission on the economic, industrial and technological coopera-tion as well as develop-ment of inter-chamber collaboration. According to him, Russian regions have much in store for extending of the base of RPEC membership.

Sergei Katyrin stressed that his cham-

ber was prepared to continue rendering assistance to the RPEC activities.

Federal Space Agency of the

Russian Federation considers the possi-bility of new Rus-sian space launcher complex construction in the north of Perm krai.

Other possible sites include Southern Siberia, Transbaika-lia and the island of Sakhalin. The final decision will be drawn in the beginning of 2009 by governmental authorities.

The Finnish com-pany Ruukki Group

is planning to estab-lish timber processing works in Perm krai according to the krai administration infor-mation centre.

Earlier on the com-pany’s representatives carried on negotiations with Sverdlovsky and Kostromskoi regions’ authorities; however these projects weren’t eventually carried out. In the latter case timber processing complex priced at €1.1 billion was set to be built including sawmill with estimated capac-ity of 500 thousand cubic meters per year and cellulose factory of 800 thousand tons per year capacity. Within the Perm region project the Finnish company is expecting to process 6 million cubic meters of the cut-over land per year. However accord-ing to the Perm krai

Ministry of Natural Resources, the region’s expected cutting area accounts for 17 million cubic meters, 8 million of which are being pro-cessed every year. Spe-cialists have estimated that minimal amount of investments cannot be less than €100 million. The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that the Ruukki Group didn’t address the agency in order to elaborate the proj-ect. Therefore it still didn’t pass the stage of negations with the krai governor.

Ruukki Group (Finland) is a multi-industry holding that carries out significant investment projects in the spheres of wood-working, metallurgy, information technolo-gies and others. The Timber Company Ru-ukki is operating in 24 countries with the staff of about 14.7 thousand people.

comed its guests on the opening day of the program “Osa is a town of discoveries” as a part of the project “The cultural centre of Perm Krai”.

In the conserva-tory “Cultural and Recreation Centre of Osa Town” there were festivities with music played by a brass band. The grand opening of the program took place in the fair square where the holiday Farewell to Winter was celebrated. At the same time there was a competition on snowmobiles and the third tournament of kettlebell sport of Perm

Kai in commemoration of the master of sports of Russia A. Khozyas-hev. Besides the guests of the town visited the museum “Pugachev’s capture of the Osa Fortress”, the museum of nature, the museum of E. Kolobov and the theatre “New Opera” and Troitzkiy Cathe-dral.

The main purposes of the program:

1. To consolidate the status of the town as the historical and cultural centre of the region.

2. To demonstrate the cultural wealth of the town and the achievements of its international, inter-re-gional and inter-mu-

nicipal relations. 3. To support cultural

In 2007, Perm witnessed the resettlement of one and a half more ramshackle and repair

houses, than in 2006.

It should be noted that 9 houses of the total are of 6.04 thousand square meters are planned to be demolished in 2008, and 24 houses are at the stage of resettlement. As it was stated in the city administration of housing relations, the rate of ramshackle housing demolition in Perm will be increased due to the programme of built-up territory development, which is meant to last for 5 years. According to the plan, investors will be in charge of the ramshackle housing demolition and people resettlement. If they can resettle people from the territory they will have the pos-sibility to build up the freed territory.

It is necessaty to remind the reader that in 2007 the city administration elaborated the package of documents, meant to attract the investments for the development of the built-up territories, occupied by ramshackle housing stock. The first open auctions for the right to en-ter into agreement with investors will take place in the second quarter of 2008. It is planned to build up about 75 thousand square meters of living space. The micro-district will be built up by multistorey houses and cottages. new art museum projects took place in Perm. And its result was a sensation – the first place was taken by Bo-ris Bernasconi, a young Russian architect, and the famous Zaha Hadid could get only the third place.

The competition for the new Perm art museum was conducted under aegis of the Perm region by the Modern Arts Centre of Irina Korobiena. The first turn of the competition was open. By now the sec-ond turn, the restricted one, was summarized. May be it is due to the connections of Mrs. Ko-robiena or just favorable conjuncture, anyway the competition has become celebrated. Architects from 320 architectural agencies, representing 50 countries, applied for the competition, includ-ing world-famous ones.

The jury was repre-sented by such world authorities as Arata Isodzaki, the main ar-chitect of Japan, Swiss architect Peter Zump-tor and Peter Noever, the director of MAK museum in Vienna, one of the main European art ringleaders for the last 20 years. The second turn was full of foreign stars: Hani Rashid from New York, Wolf Prix from Vienna, Eric Owen Moss from Los-Ange-les, Hans Hollein from Vienna, Lars Spuy-broek from Amsterdam, Odille Decq from Paris and Zaha Hadid, – as well as Russian ones: Aleksandr Brodskiy,

Totan Kuzembaev and Vladimir Plotkin.

Finally the second turn has been sum-marized. The result is shocking. The first place was shared between Russian architect Boris Bernasconi and Swiss architect Valerio Olgiati. Zaha Zadid resulted with the third place. The sensation is more ampli-fied first of all with fact, that Boris Bernasconi is only 31 years old, which is very young for an architect. There is even nothing specific to tell about him, except he graduated from Mos-cow architects institute (Mikhail Belov class) and successfully per-formed at recent exhibi-tions in Moscow.

Many were astonished how could an archi-tect without building experience get into the second turn. Second of all, project of Valerio Ol-giati, the second winner, is very “strange”, and has very low chances to

be realized. That’s why, even if the jury voted equally for both archi-tects, there is only one winner – Boris Ber-nasconi.

Well, here the article could be finished, offer-ing reader to applause the Boris Bernasconi vistory. But there are some difficulties, which are necessary to be told. First of all, it is the competition itself. Oleg Chirkunov, the Perm region governor, and Sergei Gordeev, the Perm region senator and chairman of “Rus-sian vanguard” fund, were going to make the Perm art museum as the second Bilbao – the world-famous sight, created by some foreign star architect. Sergei Gordeev even brought Tomas Krens, the head of the Guggenheim fund, to the Perm region. However, it’s turned out that Peter Zumptor and Peter Noever are totally against the Guggenheim

fund policy; both of them represent views of European intellectuals, which consider ac-tivities of the American museum as tendency of commercializing and profanation of culture. As a result the jury and the owner occurred to have different concep-tions about the new museum.

The fact that Boris Bernasconi has over-come the world’s elite is very joyful and trium-phant But it would be “little bit” difficult to in-crease tourists flow with Bernaskoni name. Sec-ond of all, its project is rather problematic. It is a big glass box, in some way similar to Central house of artist in Mos-cow, but with a railroad inside of it. And that is the Trans-Siberian Rail-way branch line. There is something exotic in idea to let Trans-Sib pass through the halls of the museum. But, according to Russian legislation a museum building could not serve for any other main function (only auxiliary). Moreover, if another function is a train station; Ministry of culture would never approve this.

So, no one knows what to do. The situation could be solved only by outside resources. Either everybody at the federal level decides that Boris Bernasconi is the Russian hope, and this fantastic victory should be supported by all the means, or the Perm competition will turn out to be fake. And that is really unwanted.

Aleksey Romanov, a perm film direc-tor, returned from Tokyo where he

took part in the international JVC Tokyo Video Festival-2008 held on March 1–3.

He was the only representative of our country at the festival. Most of the partici-pants came from Asian countries as well as from the uSA, France, Germany and Latin America. The Perm director received Excellent Award prize for his film “Ritual

of autumn wind”.The director of the film defines its genre as “a meditative

trip”. The documentary full of Manci legends tells about a long journey of “the last Manci of Perm Krai” Aleksey Bahti-yarov that he takes to get some deer meat. The film is to be broadcasted by several Japanese TV channels.

Today Aleksey Romanov is shooting a documentary about foreigners in Russia. The première of the film is to be held in July.

The Perm krai gov-ernment adopted

the check list of spe-cially protected natu-ral sites of the region. The following data was previously dispersed in the numerous regula-tions and standards issued by the krai leg-islative and executive authorities.

The list accounts for 263 natural sites. Those include wild landscape areas (The White Moss rocks in the Cherdyn district, Vetlan and Garrulous Stone in the Krasnovishersk district, the Stone Town in Gremyachensk dis-trict), geological sites (Gubakhinskaya and Ordinskaya Caves), hydrologic sights

(Yermakov Spring in Cherdyn), and pro-tected landscapes (Mount of Kapkan (Deadfall Mountain) in Chernushka, Kvarkush and Polyudov Stone in Krasnovishersk, Adovo Lake in Gainy). Not to forget zoological (“Guselnikovsky” in the Kishert district) and botanic reserves (The Perm State university Botanical gardens), botanic natural monu-ments (Zyukaisky steep in the Karagai district, Veslyansky “Chirping Forest” in Gainy) and historical and natural complexes (The Count Burr in the Kishert dis-trict, Kuvinsky Burr in the Kudymkar district, Kungur Ice Cave and Icy Mountain).

All the listed above natural areas are sub-ject to preferential pro-tection. Building con-struction, tree felling (except for the sanitary one), waste recycling, geological exploration that may damage soil and vegetation cover or animals’ living space are prohibited on the sites’ territory. They are allowed to visit for recreational and educa-tional purposes only.

Boundaries of the majority of specially protected natural sites have already been de-termined. The Ministry of urban Planning and Infrastructure Develop-ment is to provide all the natural monuments with official documentation in the course of 2008.

ACt-wAit iS ovER The krai court has

settled the Perm Theater of Opera and Ballet complaint on the Leninsky district administration deci-sion that ceased the theater work in the audience hall. The court has decided that during the first instance legal inves-tigation the circum-stances of the case were not studied thoroughly enough.

On March 28 the Court of Leninsky District decided to stop all the activ-ity in the theater’s auditorium hall for 30 days. The theatre was determined guilty of the fire safety rules violation. On Febru-ary 2008 during the Fire Safety Supervis-ing Agency check 75 violations were detected. As a result the district admin-istration brought an action and took the case to the Court of Leninsky District. On April 2 the court of-ficers sealed the hall up and warned the theater management of administrative and criminal liability in case the court deci-sions weren’t effected.

Thus the decision threatened to frus-trate Cesaria Evora concert, Alexander Kalyagin Theater tour and interna-tional ballet contest “Arabesque-2008” holding. At that time Georgy Isaakyan, the theater’s art di-rected, announced that he was capable of violating the law in order to hold all the scheduled events. Once the court of-ficers left, the seals were plucked and the spectators made their way to the hall unimpeded. Next day the officers sealed the hall up again but the ban was ignored one more time before Alexander Kalyagin Theatre performance. But for all that the constant change of theater acting art di-rectors prevented the officers from calling somebody to account for the court decision violation.

While complaint processing the lawyer

Andrey Brazhkin asked the krai court to cancel the first instance decision and fix a penalty that wouldn’t imply ceasing of the theater activity. Moreover mister Brazhkin men-tioned that by April 2 theater workers eliminated 15 viola-tions and 8 more by April 3.

Besides the lawyer solicited for deposi-tion of the Property Management Agency director’s letter that guarantees alloca-tion of funds (about 8 million rubles) for liquidation of all the fire safety rules viola-tions. The theater directors reached the agreement with the krai capital construc-tion management on the theater building reconstruction, said Andrey Brazhkin.

Georgy Isaakyan mentioned in his turn that tempo-rary suspension of the theater’s activ-ity would lead to 13 million rubles losses. “For the theater it’s an enormous sum of money, the art director explained, as a result of the suspension we may go bankrupt”. At the same time Isaakyan stated once more that the theater clo-sure would cause a great damage to the krai cultural life.

In the long run the judge Olga Vasilyeva determined that the decision of the dis-trict court was unmo-tivated for it lacks the analysis of every fire safety violation im-puted to the cultural institution, besides, the district court failed to determine whether the theater was guilty of the said offence.

“I’m glad that today I won’t have to break the law”, says Georgy Isaakyan at the end of the hearing, “now the tour performances will take place legally not like yesterday when the theater was considered to be a criminal”. At the same time the art director complained that the case was taken to the same court and “meet-ing the person who authorized the theater suspension will be hard for both parties”.

Perm Ministry of Emergency Situations authorities refused to comment on the cancel of the Len-insky district court decision. Natalya Moiseeva, the Federal Bailiff Service rep-resentative in Perm krai, explained that the theater wouldn’t be sanctioned for plucking off the of-ficers’ seals as far as the previous court de-cision was cancelled.

Aleksey ivanov has given an interview specially to “the Perm Days”:

“In provincial Russia it’s very difficult and even almost impos-sible for a writer to publish a book. Local publishing houses are open only for those who can pay for publishing their book themselves. As for the capital its publishing houses they are not interested in books about the province.

I wrote the novel “The heart of Parma” in 2000 but it took me three years to get

admitted to the gov-ernor and persuade him to allot money from the regional

budget for publishing my book. The book was published in 2003 and soon after that it was republished in Moscow and became a bestseller all over the country. I have given for free the right to perform a musical staged after my novel to the local theatre. I did it to express my gratitude to the perm Krai for publishing the book. In Russia we say “One good turn deserves another”.

Feasibility study underway regard-

ing the construction of chemical plants for propylene oxide and hydrogen peroxide

Essen, Germany-based Evonik In-dustries AG and the Russian JSC Sibur Holding, based in Moscow, have agreed to start an exclu-sive feasibility study regarding the pos-sible construction of a facility to produce propylene oxide (PO), together with hydro-gen peroxide, for use in the Russian Fed-eration. The study is to be completed in the coming months and will determine possible locations and capacities.

Sibur is considering the construction of a PO plant that uses the new HPPO pro-cess, which produces propylene oxide from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and propylene in a low-cost and eco-logically sound man-ner. Evonik and the engineering company uhde, Dortmund, Germany, jointly developed this HPPO process and are now licensing it to other chemical companies.

Dmitry Konov, President of Sibur, commented: “Pos-sible partnership with Evonik will allow to serve the quickly expanding market for propylene oxide in Russia with this innovative process.” Propylene oxide is a precursor material for polyurethane, which is used, for example, in cushioning and instrument panels for cars. Dr. Klaus Engel,

Member of Evonik’s Executive Board and responsible for the Chemicals Business Area, explained: “We want to expand our presence with hydro-gen peroxide in the region of Eastern Eu-rope. With Sibur, we are co-operating with a reliable and expe-rienced partner who is intimately familiar with this high-growth region.”

Evonik is the only company that can provide the process technology for the HPPO process to produce propylene oxide, the neces-sary special catalyst, and the raw material, hydrogen peroxide, from a single source. If it receives approval Evonik and Sibur will review the estab-lishment of a joint venture for the pro-duction of hydrogen peroxide with Evon-ik’s own technology to supply a potential HPPO plant with the hydrogen peroxide. The H2O2 plant, to be constructed at the same location as the HPPO plant in the Russian Federation, would supply the planned PO produc-tion of Sibur with

hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, the es-timated capacity is to be sufficiently large that the joint venture would supply the growing market in the Russian Federation and the Common-wealth of Indepen-dent States (CIS) with H2O2 for conventional applications, primar-ily in paper and pulp bleaching processes.

In mid-January, Evonik had started the operation of a sig-nificantly expanded hydrogen peroxide facility in ulsan, Korea, in conjunc-tion with its American joint venture partner, Headwaters of South Jordan, utah. This facility will supply the Korean H2O2 market, while providing the Korean company SKC in Seoul with hydro-gen peroxide, directly “over the fence” from the ulsan site. In the coming months, SKC will begin operating one of the first global facilities for produc-ing propylene oxide to use the new HPPO process under license from Evonik and uhde.

Collectively, these sites generate over 1.1 billion gallons of gasoline sales annually and will more than double the amount of Getty’s cur-rent light product sales in the united States.

BPC (Uralkali’s export trader and a

50% joint venture with Belaruskali) has in-formed Uralkali of an agreement reached on March 20, 2008 with IPL, India’s largest im-porter of mineral fertil-izers, on the price and volume for the supply of potassium chloride (MOP) in 2008-2009.

The price for sales to IPL has been set at $625 per tonne of MOP, which is $355 per tonne higher than the price for sales to IPL set in June, 2007. The new price has been established for shipments from May 2008 until March 2009.

BPC’s agreement with IPL is for the ship-ment of 750,000 tonnes of potassium chloride (MOP). uralkali’s por-tion of these deliveries

will be determined in accordance with the budget agreed with Belaruskali.

BPC believes that settlement with IPL equally benefits both parties: BPC will strengthen its leading positions at the Indian potash market and IPL will secure the long term supply agree-ment amidst continu-ous tightening of MOP global supplies. The successful result of its negotiations with IPL proves the commitment of the company for uninterrupted supplies to India as a key con-sumer market.

Henkel has taken over from Akzo

Nobel the Adhesives and Electronic Materials businesses previously owned by National Starch.

“This acquisition represents a milestone in our 130-plus-year corporate history and points Henkel clearly in the direction of further profitable growth,” said ulrich Lehner, Chair-man of the Manage-ment Board of Henkel KGaA. The acquisition was preceded by the carve-out of the busi-nesses to be acquired by Henkel and the requisite antitrust and anticompetitive investi-gations by the relevant authorities.

In 2007, these two business segments of National Starch gener-ated sales of 1.25 billion GBP (about 1.83 billion euros). The purchase price was 2.7 billion GBP (about 3.7 billion euros). Following the integration, annual-ized sales of Henkel’s Adhesives Technolo-gies business sector will increase to about 7.5 billion euros. Henkel expects synergies from the acquisition of 240 to 260 million euros per year and anticipates it will realize the full synergy potential from 2011 on.

“We will do every-thing in our power to integrate this excel-lent company with its outstanding employees and products quickly and smoothly”, added ulrich Lehner. Henkel will provide an update on the integration process in connection with the publication of the Q1 figures on May 7, 2008.

Market position strengthened

By acquiring the Ad-hesives and Electronic Materials businesses of National Starch, Henkel substantially further strengthens its leading position in the global adhesives markets, particularly in the industrial segment. The businesses of National Starch and the exist-ing Henkel Adhesives Technologies portfolio excellently complement each other.

Within Henkel’s Adhesives Technolo-gies business sector, the acquisition will have a particular impact on the packaging and wood adhesives businesses, as well as on the electron-ics business. Henkel, for example, has very good market posi-tions in the laminating adhesives segment used in the manufacture of flexible packaging for food products, while National Starch is a leader in pressure-sen-sitive adhesives. As a result of the merger, these technologies will be accessible to a larger number of customers, while new areas of ap-plication are expected to be developed. In the electronics field, National Starch offers a specialty adhesive with which electronic chips can be bonded on – for example – cred-it cards, while Henkel markets solutions for the protection of these sensitive chips against damaging environmen-tal influences such as heat or sun radiation. The combination of the two businesses now enables customers to source both solutions from a single supplier.

Henkel also sees a

significant strength-ening of its regional market positions. The share of sales account-ed for by the Asia-Pa-cific region will, with the acquisition of the National Starch busi-nesses, increase from 8 percent to around 12 percent, and the share of sales of the adhe-sives business per se in this region will actu-ally double due to the already strong position of both companies. At the same time, the strong market position enjoyed by Henkel in Europe, particularly in the growth region of Eastern Europe, can be leveraged to accelerate expansion by enabling brands and technolo-gies from National Starch to be marketed via the Henkel sales and distribution net-work already estab-lished in this region.

Joint Metallurgical Company that com-

prises the Open JSC “Chusovoi Metallurgi-cal Works” took part in the world largest exhibition of tubular goods and equipment for tubular industry producers “Tube-2008” that was hold in the German city of Düs-seldorf on March 31 – April 4, 2008, says “Chusovoi Metallurgi-cal Works” press-cen-tre representative.

The exhibition takes place once in two years. This time 5 pavilions of the Messe Düsseldorf exhibi-tion center hosted 629 companies from 50 countries of the world. The Joint Metallurgical Company production was presented under the slogan “Oil, gas and water get delivered through our tubes to

the countries of the world”.

According to the Joint Metallurgical Company press service and Mikhail Brodsky, the company’s techni-cal strategy director, 5 exhibition days brought new agreements on the company’s goods delivery to dozens of new consumers. The JMC management has in its turn examined the world leaders of equipment production achievements in order to discover new direc-tions of the tubular industry development.

It should be high-lighted than in 2007 the JMC supplied up to 18% of tubular goods to the Russian market including 34% of big diameter tubes, 62% of railway wheels, and about 75% of automo-bile carriage springs. In 2007 the JMC enter-

prises produced 1.8 million tons of tubular goods and 820 thou-sand railway wheels. X Competition of Ballet Dancers of Russia

«ARABESQUE —2008»(open for foreign dancers) Russia, perm, 19-29 April 2008

«Arabesque» is a Russian ballet compe-tition that was founded to be open for foreign dancers to participate in. Since 1990 about 500 young ballet art-ists and students of choreography schools from almost all the ballet companies of Russia, former re-publics of the uSSR, as well as of Austria, Argentina, Byelorus-sia, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, Mon-golia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, the uSA, Turkey, Croatia, South Korea, Venezu-ela, Japan have taken part in this contest. The artistic director of the competition is a People’s Artist of the uSSR Vladimir Vas-siliev, who was also the chairman of the Jury in 1990, 1992 and 1994.

Since 1996 a People’s Artist of the uSSR Yekaterina Maximova heads this post. In differ-ent times among the members of the Jury were Vyatcheslav Gordeev, Raissa

Struchkova, Evgeny Valukin (Moscow), Gabriella Komleva, Nikolai Boyarchikov (St.-Petersburg), Lud-mila Sakhorova, Kirill Shmorgoner (Perm), Leonora Kuvatova (ufa), Yuryi Zoritch (uSA), Kendzi usui and Kyozo Fukuda (Japan), Vera Kirova (Bulgaria), Irina Bar-onova (Great Britain), Dietmar Seyffert (Ger-many), Jamiyadava Baljinnyam (Mongo-lia), Park Jae Keun (Korea) and others. In 1994 «Arabesque» was admitted and taken under patron-age of uNESCO. The President of the International Council of Dance (uNESCO) Milorad Miskovitch was a member of the Jury twice.

The ballet competi-tion «Arabesque» has already become tradi-tional; it takes place in Perm State Tchai-kovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in Russia, built up in the 19th century on the initiative of the demo-

cratic community of Perm, with participa-tion of the municipal musical society, to which belonged a world-famous fam-ily Diaghilev. In this family, in the atmo-sphere of worship to theatre, a well-known impresario of Russian art Sergey Diaghilev spent his youth.

Now the Grand Prix of the competition «Arabesque» bears the name of Sergey Diaghilev. The main aims of this unique in Russia ballet com-petition were always the striving to open new names, to give a chance to young talented artists to show their worth, to promote classical heritage and contem-

porary choreography, to develop contacts with foreign represen-tatives of ballet art.

George ZoritchDanseur noble, teacher, star

of films and Broadway shows, won international acclaim dur-ing his remarkable career as a superlative exponent of the Rus-sian ballet. Born in Moscow in 1917, a student of the legendary Preobrajenska, Zoritch joined Colonel de Basil’s Ballet Russes in 1935. Major roles were cre-ated for him by David Lichine and by Leonide Massine, who re-cruited him for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo’s popular tours of North and South America. Zoritch also enjoyed success on Broadway and in Hollywood. In 1951 he joined the celebrated Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cue-vas, winning praise worldwide in over fifty roles. During his sub-sequent five years with Sergei Denham’s Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Zoritch became a favorite of American balletomanes and taught many master classes. After running his own school in Los Angeles, he joined the fac-ulty of the University of Arizona at Tucson in 1973, where he es-tablished a highly respected bal-let program. Retirement in 1987 offered him the chance to revisit Russia and become acquainted with a new generation of danc-ers and directors in his home-land. Today Zoritch is in demand as a guest and adjudicator at international competitions and conferences, where his knowl-edge and experience are recog-

nized as unique and invaluable links to the astonishing world of the Ballet Russe.

vladimir vasilievvladimir vasiliev is a Rus-

sian ballet dancer, was principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, and was best known for his role of Spartacus and his powerful leaps and turns.

Born in Moscow in 1940, the son of a truck driver, vasiliev graduated from the Moscow Ballet School in 1958 and joined the Bolshoi Ballet. He became a premier dancer who made enormous contributions to the development of classical male dance; he came to embody the strong new Bolshoi male.

He is the only dancer to be given the title “world’s Best Dancer” by the Paris Dance Academy. Russia’s influential ballet critic Fedor Lopukhov called him “God of the dance … A miracle in art, perfection,”

Numerous roles were cre-ated for him, and he performed throughout the world, usu-

ally partnering his wife, Bolshoi prima ballerina Ekaterina Maxi-mova. Among the most nota-ble were those created by Yuri Grigorovich, who gave him the principal roles in his original productions of The Stone Flow-er, Spartacus, The Nutcracker, Ivan The Terrible and Angara. Besides Maximova, vasiliev’s famous partners included: Ga-lina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya, Alicia Alonso, Carla Fracci, and Rita Poelvoorde.

Yet vladimir vasiliev is not as well known in the west as such dancers Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, be-cause he remained in the Soviet Union and did most of his work there rather than defecting.

New York Times dance critic Anna Kisselgoff described the excitement of one of vasiliev’s U.S. performances with the Bol-shoi Ballet: “Yekaterina Maksi-mova and vladimir vasiliev burst upon New York City in 1959, the greatest of the pas-sionate young dancers who, with Moscow’s more estab-lished stars, made the Bolshoi Ballet’s American debut a total triumph.”

In March 1995 vladimir vasiliev was appointed the General and Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Theatre after Yuri Grigorovich, artistic director of the ballet company since 1963, was dismissed by Russian Presi-dent Boris Yeltsin.

vasiliev was himself dis-missed as director of the Bol-shoi Theater August 28, 2000 in a decree signed by Rus-sian President vladimir Putin. vasiliev learned about his dis-missal from hearing it on the radio.

Since his exit from the Bol-shoi, vasiliev premiered in the ballet production Lungo viag-gio Nella Notte di Natale to Tchaikovsky’s music in Opera di Roma, and continues to choreo-graph and stage new ballets.

Over the years vasiliev has received many of the most prestigious Soviet, Russian and foreign prizes, orders and high-est awards including the USSR State Prize, Russian State Prize, Russian State order “For Merits”

and State Order “For Merits” of France, Lithuanian State Or-der, State Order of Brasil “Rio Branco”, UNESCO Pablo Picasso Medal and others.

Ekaterina maximova

Ekaterina Maximova is one of the most popular and be-loved of the Russian ballerinas of the 20th Century.

Born in Moscow on 1 Feb-ruary 1939 she studied at the Moscow Choreographic Insti-tute under the distinguished ballerina Elisaveta Gerdt. An exceptionally talented student she was taken into the Bolshoi immediately on her graduation in 1958 having already danced the complete role of Masha in vainonen’s Nutcracker.

Her creative biography is inseparably linked with that of vladimir vasiliev. They have

been partners both profession-ally and privately throughout their adult lives.

Early in her career at the Bolshoi she performed a few smaller assignments such as the peasant pas de deux in Giselle, Colombine in The Bronze Horseman, the Bell Dance in Act 2 of The Fountain of Bakh-chisarai, which she danced in Galina Ulanova’s farewell performance, but soon under Ulanova’s guidance danced her first Giselle in 1960.

However her first major suc-cess had already taken place in 1959 with the role of Katerina in The Stone Flower. This was her first meeting with chore-ographer Yuri Grigorovich and a collaboration which was last 20 years in which she danced a number of leading roles in his productions, most notably perhaps for western audiences Phrygia in Spartacus and Ma-sha in The Nutcracker. These ballets, alongside Giselle were the backbone to many of the tours undertaken by the Bol-shoi in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Her other main roles during this time at the Bolshoi were Kitri in Don Quixote and Cin-derella in Zakharov’s version of the fairy tale. She also danced Maria in The Fountain of Bakh-chisarai. In 1973 she added Juliet in Lavrovsky’s version of the Shakespeare ballet to her repertoire.

Together with vasiliev she toured independently from the main Bolshoi troupe from the early 1980’s and took on many new roles created for her by her husband. Perhaps the greatest of all was her performance in title role of his full-length ballet Aniuta premiered on stage in 1986 based on a film recorded four years earlier. She enjoyed huge success with the Kremlin Ballet in Moscow in 1990 in the title role of his production of Cinderella.

Since leaving the stage she has worked at the Bolshoi The-atre as a pedagogue, coaching the leading soloists in ballerina roles. Also since 1982 she has been on the faculty of dance at Moscow’s GITIS institute.

thE ChUSovAYA RivER –thE BEginning of YERmAk tRiP

The river has a unique feature

— it flows on two continents — Asia and Europe, origi-nating on the east slope of the Ural ridge, crossing it and then flowing on the western slope. From ancient times the river Chusovaya was used as trade route between Europe and Siberia.

The Chusovaya was first mentioned in written Russian documents in 1396. From the16th century Russians began mak-ing the river Chuso-vaya navigable. In 1558, according to the edict of tsar Ivan IV, merchants of the Stro-ganov family received sole possession and control of the river within the boundar-ies of the upper and middle Kama and its associated tributar-ies on a never-ending basis. In 1568 these merchants were also given full control over the “country Chuso-viya” (from the mouth of the Chusovaya to the upper reaches and up to 21 km from its banks).

At the end of the

19th century the fa-mous Russian writer, D.Mamin-Sibiryak wrote, “The River Chusovaya, probably, will be in a short time one of the favorite places for Russian tourists, scientists, artists... In the future, tourists will rest in these mountains and forests, artists will find plentiful material for their works and scientists, will un-doubtedly, find a lot of interest in geology, botany and ethnogra-phy... ”. In reality, the river became a trea-sured dream for many Russian tourists.

It flows on the ter-ritory of three dis-tricts — Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk and Perm rising from the north-ern part of the Che-lyabinsk district. Its middle section crosses the border between Sverdlovsk and Perm twice then flows into the Kama reservoir near the city of Perm. The length of the river is 777 km and the area of its basin is 42,000 sq. km.

The Chusovaya is “opened” at the end of April, when the ice quickly melts and the water level rises

3-4 m. In the sum-mer months the river becomes very shallow – at the end the July to the beginning of August the depth on fords does not exceed 7-15 cm. In autumn the weather is rainy and the water level rises considerably and then in November the river freezes. The average height of the river is 120-250 m above sea level.

On banks of the Chusovaya, differ-ent species of trees grow — fur-trees, firs, pines, larch, birch and aspen. The forest is rich with berries and mushrooms. It is possible to see elks, bears, wolves, lynx, foxes, hares, squir-rels and chipmunks. There are also many heath cocks and hazel grouses. In autumn on the river, migratory birds, such as ducks and geese rest. In the river different spe-cies of fish are found — perch, ruff, small fry, pike, chub, ide (from the carp family) and bream.

Limestone and dolomite rocks with amazing shapes on the banks give the river a fascinating beauty. In middle part of the river there are about two hundred rocks. These rocks on the Chusovaya are named “Kamien” and the»Boets” (Fighter) was the most danger-ous for barges, which traveled down the riv-er in olden times. The rocks vary in height from 10 to 115 metres

above water level and stretch from 30 metres to 1.5 kilome-ters along the banks. All of the rocks have a karst origin and in some of them are small caves. Many of these rock formations are protected by the state as natural monu-ments.

BElAYA goRA – URAl AthoSBelogorski Saint

Nikolas monastery is 100 km away from the city Perm, in Kungur region. It’s history begann in the end of 19-th century. We can consider 1890 as the date of it’s founda-tion. At that time, the traditional Russian cross was placed on the top of the Belaya Gora, where the earth meets the sky. Thou-sands of pilgrims had been gathering here, and every year, on the Hallowmasicon, bearing procession was held.

The wooden Saint Nikolas church was built on the Be-laya Gora in 1893, and two years later church in the name of the Iberian icon of the Mother of God was built. Meanwhile, a fraternity emerged on the Belaya Gora and the monestry was set in 1897. Due to the hard work and prayers of the fraternity, the mon-astery was expanded and won fame of ural Athos, the gem of Perm Krai. In the early 20th cen-tury, more than 400 monks, lay brothers (novices), prayers and Russian land’s advocates worked for the sake of the God. Our ancestries built a monastic town on the Belaya Gora. There were churches, alms-houses, buildings for fraternity, a hospital, a school for boy-or-phans in the town. Daily, the monestry was visited by more than 70 thousand pil-grims from different provinces. The heart of the Belaya Gora was the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which had been built from 1902 till 1917, shortly before the October revolution. It worth mentioning that the October revolution had a great nega-tive impact on the Holy Russia. It is the reason why the mon-astery was closed in 1923. It shared tragic fate of many Russian churches and monas-teries.

Revival of the sa-cred place begann in 1991, when the Saint Nikolas monastery on the Belaya Gora was open with the blessing of the Holy Synod. In 1996 the monestry was visited by Holy Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus-sia, Alexis II. The cel-ebrant of the Russian Orthodox Church admired the ameni-ties of Belaya Gora, it’s scope and gran-deur of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The Belaya Gora is also visited by famous people of Russia: politicians, business-men, art and cultural workers.

Today, Belogorsky monastery is the pride and attraction of the Perm Krai. The his-tory of the ural Athos revival continues…

For the first time in history the Perm region took part in the international tourist exhi-

bition Intourmarket-2008 (Moscow).

Besides the Kungurskaya Ice cave, Prykamie was represented by such projects as: “Diaghilev seasons” (Perm), “KAMWA” festival (Kudymkar), “Heart of Parma” festival (Cherdyn), aeronautics festival “The urals Sky Fair” (Kungur), Russian rally championship “Ermak” (Chusovoy). Also the Perm region presented investments projects “Suksun resort hotel” (Suksunskiy district), Sport-tourist complex “usva” (Gremiachenskiy district), Center of tourism and recreation “Il’inka” (Kun-gurskiy dictrict), “Aquapark” (Kungurskiy district) and resort-tourist centre “Parma” (Kizelovskiy district). At the last day of the forum, the Perm region Ministry of commerce and business devel-opment was awarded for active work during the exhibition. The Intourmarket-2008 expressed a desire to have the Perm region among the regular participants of the event, and wished good luck in further development of tourism in the region.

oRthoDoX SACRED PRoCESSion

On March 28 – April 11, 2008 Perm krai welcomed the participants of International

Religious Procession “Beneath the Holy Mother’s Star”. On May 17, 2007 with His Holiness Alexis II Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia blessing International spiritual and educational program “Beneath the Holy Mother’s Star” commemorating Russian Orthodox Church reunion was geared.

From May 2007 to June 2008 within the pro-gram’s framework pedestrian religious processions symbolizing eight rays of the Holy Virgin Star were set to be started. Pilgrims were to come out of six Russian cities: Vladivostok, Barnaul, Yakutsk, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg and Archangelsk, not to forget two universal Orthodox centers Jerusalem and Athos. The territory of Russia crossed, they should meet in Moscow in June 2008.

On March 28 at 1 a.m. on the border of Yekat-erinburg region and Perm krai near Achit village (Suksun district) Perm believers welcomed the par-ticipants of Yakutsk-Moscow procession. Further on the procession moved on through Suksun, Kungur, Perm, Krasnokamsk, Nytva, Ocher, Bolshaya Sosna districts, and the cities of Perm and Kungur.

On April 4 religious procession was solemnly welcomed by Perm eparchy priesthood and citizens. In the morning on April 7 the procession resumed its journey on the territory of Krasnokamsk district. As early as April 11 believers crossed the border of Perm krai and penetrated into udmurtia.

The procession safety is maintained by Perm krai department of Internal Affairs. Procession partici-pants make over 30 kilometers per day thus they will receive all the necessary medical aid and help with the event management.

The museum was established on

November 15th, 1890 by resolution of the Perm committee of the Ural Natural Science Society. Until 1920’s it was known as Perm scientific-industrial museum, later as the Perm region local history museum, and since 2007 it’s been called the Perm re-gional museum.

At the present time it is the largest museum of Prikamye. It owns 600 thousand items and includes 45 collections of regional, Russian, and world significance. The most famous ones are:

Since the end of XX century the collection of archeo-logical department are replenish with materials of the new time period memorials – Russian cities and plants: ceramic and glass tableware, jew-elry, implements of the ural cities population, as well as with photos and drawings of the mansions and industri-al plants of XVII-XIX centuries.

Natural Science collection. The most valuable items of the museum fund is paleontologic collec-tion, which includes the world-famous samples, gathered by G.T. Mauer. Those are fos-sil flora and insects of the Paleozoic era Perm period, discovered by him in 1920-30’s by Sylva and Barda rivers.

Rare books fund. It includes unique hand-written and old printed books of XVI-XIX centuries, civil books of VIII-XX centuries, newspaper fund and collection of maps and plans of XIX-XX centuries. The collec-tion of the hand-writ-ten and old printed books is the most attractive part of the fund. Especially unique samples are copies of Solikamsk cadastres by M. Kaysarov (1696), “Skits Paterikon” (XVII), “Psalmbooks” 1640-1650’s, “Emerald” (XVII), “The Book of Degrees” (XVIII), «Mo-nastic chronicle» by D. Rostovskiy (XVIII), sketchbooks from the archive of Demidovs – peasants of the Stroganovs farmstead of XVIII-XIX (it consists of fiction, historical, medicine and other books), the Old-Believ-ers volumes. The fund’s gem is the “Gospel”, published by unknown (anonymous) Moscow

print-shop in 1553, which is 10 years ear-lier than the “Apostle” by Ivan Fedorov, con-sidered to be the first Russian printed book.

Fine arts collection. From the historical viewpoint the most significant part of the paintings collection is works of serf artists. Industrial landscapes, original portraits of peasants, merchants, philistines and plant area inhabitants, are there along with clever copies of family por-traits of Stroganovs and other local fabricants. These copies were cre-ated for interior decora-tion of the manufactur-ers’ Prikamye estates.

Ethnographic col-lection. The unique collection, representing history of the region Old-Believers, includes written documentaries (collection of glass pho-to-negatives, related to plants’ history, archi-tecture and the region ethnography by the XIX-XX) and so on.

The museum con-sists of major depart-ments, widely known by Perm citizens and the city guests, such as museum-house of N.G. Slavianov (The inventor of arc weld-ing), diorama-museum in Motovilikha with the

unique diorama, devot-ed to the first Russian revolution events in Prikamye. The mu-seum has such subdivi-sions as “Khokhlovka” architectural-ethno-graphic complex, which is an ensemble of 23 wooden art memorials of XVII-XX centuries (distinctive feature of the region). Other sub-divisions are the memo-rial museum-house of V.V. Kamenskiy, poet-futurist, in Troitsa village and local history museum in Osa and Tchaikovsky cities.

The museum com-plex occupies 35 buildings and housings throughout the city and the region, and among them there are federal significance architectural memori-als. Nowadays the museum, left its main building (Episcopal house) to the Russian Orthodox Church, is preparing to move into another building – the Meshkov house, also known as historical and architectural memorial of the Perm region. The full value historical ex-hibition is to be created there.

During these years more than 19 million people visited its halls, annually more than 200 thousand citizens and

the city guests come there. The museum is a scientific and meth-odological centre for 34 municipal and more than 200 official and public museums in the region.

The museum is known in the Russian museum environment due to its achieve-ments: the museum is a laureate of the “Window to Russia” competition in nomina-tion of the “Culture” newspaper “Museum of the year”. It is also win-ner in “Advertising is the engine of museum progress” nomination at the All-Russian muse-um festival “Intermuse-um-2002”. Twice it has been the winner of the V. Potantin charity fund competition “Changing museum in the chang-ing world”. Eight times the art teams of the Perm regional museum have become laureates of the regional award in culture and art field.

The Perm regional museum, by developing and strengthening solid traditions of scientific, exhibition-educational and scientific-method-ological activities, holds a very significant and honorable position in cultural sphere of the city, the region and Russia.

descriptionThis salad is the creation of a French chef,

M. Olivie, who in the 1860s opened a fashionable restaurant in Moscow called The Hermitage. The present-day version has veered quite far from the original, but Salad Olivie continues to be a favor-ite hors d’oeuvre and side dish for entrees.

ingredients• 1 whole chicken breast, poached,

boned, and skinned, or 1/2 pound lean cooked veal.

• 1 pound all-purpose potatoes, boiled in their skins and peeled.

• 2 medium Cucumbers in Brine. • 1 cup cooked fresh or frozen peas. • 1 medium onion, finely chopped. • 1 cup Mayonnaise. • 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and quar-

tered. • 8 large black Greek olives. • 8 sprigs parsley.

methodServes 8-10 as an appetizer or 6 as an entreeCut the cooked chicken and potatoes into 1/2-

inch cubes. Peel the cucumbers and also cut into 1/2-inch cubes. In a large bowl, combine the meat, potatoes, cucumbers, green peas, and onion. Add the mayonnaise and mix gently, so those ingredi-ents are not mashed.

Refrigerate the salad until serving time (but for no longer than 4 hours).

“PERmYAtSkAYA“ CUiSinEWhen we speak

about Perm Cousin we mean naton-al cuisines of udmurt, permyak, komi-pemyak people and other na-tionalities of Prikamya, North Predural and Ural.

It is a mixture of rus-sian and tatar cuisines. For instance, dishes from meat and pastry, which were common in Prikamya (bulgar nations who lived near Kama and Volga rivers) before it was conquered by Golden Horde in the XIII century. Now such dishes are common not only in perm, but also russian and tatar cuisines.

Perm cuisine has a lot in common with russian cuisine, especially with Old Russian one: game (hares, salmons, hazel hens, black grouses) is commonly used in com-bination with other gifts of Prikamya’s nature such as berries growing in a forest, mushrooms

and wild honey, peas turnip are also used.

Only such products as young meadow pine and pecans may be substituted in the Perm peoples cuisine. They are used as vegetables for soups, stuffing for pies and for the Perm “selianki”. In the Perm peoples cuisine this old Russian name stands for egg and milk mixes, baked on pans (not at the open fire), with plenty of meat, fish, mushroom or vegetable stuffing. The “seliankis” are to be eaten cold, not hot. Mushrooms should be pickled, but not fried. Turnip may be cooked as “parenki”: These are vegetables stewed in kettle without water in stove for sev-eral hours. To prepare turnip without boiled vegetable touch it is recommended to cover kettles with thick coat of rye and barley straw, hemp chaff or husk, turn the kettle upside-down, and leave it in

the stove for the night. Such a hint lets you get stewed, but absolutely dry, free from excess moisture. That adds to turnips peculiar zest and consistency, as well as rye, barley or hemp aroma. The “parenkis” are to be eaten with thick barley kvass.

The most popular soups are mushroom shchi (mushrooms with nettle, angelica and turnip), peeled barley shchi—soup made of fine-ground barley and fish-soup. A fish is high on the list of perm cui-sine, especially prikam-skoi one. In the past it was not only boiled but also made sour. usu-ally fish is used in pirogi (pies). It is gilled (drawn), washed out and put into a pie with scales, but without bones. It gives the pie an original taste. And it differs perm pies form others. More over, a pastry for the pies are made of unleavened rye, rue-wheaten or rye-bar-ley flour.

Perm cuisine contrib-uted greatly to russian, tatar and all-union cuisines. For instance, pelmeni (sort of ravioli stuffed with meat) or pelnyani in udmurt (“pel” can be translated as “ear” and nyan as “bread”). The udmurt word “pelnyani” and russian word “permy-ani” (means “perm food”) turned into “pel-meni” in the XIX cen-tury. Today, “pelmeni” become the name for the dish not only in Russia. The specific feature of the russian pelmeni is to be found in the it’s filling—45% of beef, 35% of mutton, 20% of pork. In Tatar cuisine, pelmeni (manti) are made of mutton, in Lithuanian—mailnly of beef. And only in ural and Sibiria pelmeni are made of beef and pork mixture. Perm cuisine would also please you with different fillings for pelemni. Among them are mushrooms, onion, turnip and sauerkraut.

PERm CUiSinE - 2008x Open Cookig Festival

«Perm Cuisine» is a traditional

festival uniting vari-ous professionals of the catering world — chefs, confectioners, waiters, sushi-makers, barmen, baristas…

Gaining a bigger scale and magnitude with each year, in 2007 the Festival attracted more than 200 participants from the Perm Region and elsewhere in Russia.

The idea of the festi-val dates back to 1998 when Perm marked its 275-years anniversary… Impressed by this event, local cooks shaped their congratulations to the beloved native city into… “paintings” and “sculptures” of the city’s most famous sights: the Perm Picture Gal-lery, Opera and Ballet Theaters, old city maps, formidable “Motovi-likha” cannons, open-air “Khohlovka” ethnogra-phy museum, beautiful city landscapes… and presents their creations to the eyes of visitors

and the jury of the first “Perm Cuisine” Festival. Needless to say that all items were made on a top professional and artistic level and – more importantly – of foodstuffs!

This year the pro-gram of “Perm Cuisine” Festival, traditionally organized by the Perm Cooks Association and the Perm Regional Min-istry of Trade, includes a wide range of profes-sional contests: culinary art class (the one with “paintings” and “sculp-tures”!), team contests in “R” class, a series of individual competitions for best chef, sushi-mak-

er, confectioner, carving masters; the Open Barista Championship, “fly barmen” barmen’s contest, and other.

Ashberry beads“Special” event of

the Festival is so-called “Ashberry beads” contest, which invest everyone who wants to take part, whether professional participant or an amateur. To joint the contest, one needs to find and send in an original recipe of any lo-cal cuisine reflecting the culture of propel living in the area – komi-permian, tatar, bashkir, Russian, udmurt, mar-ian, etc. Later during

the Festival, professional cooks will prepare their meals based on the best recipes selected by the jury.

In 2008, for the first time in its history, the “Perm Cuisine” Festival open its doors to team and individuals from the C.I.S. and foreign countries.

Participants will enjoy not only the Festival’s busy and exciting con-test program, but will exlore the area-unique tourist attractions: the Kungur ice cave, famous Perm ballet, amazing Perm wooden sculpture, legendary Cerdyn-town, and many other historic, cultural and natural treasures of the Perm Region.
