Mental Health By D. M. LeBOURDAIS

Director, Dimion of Education. Gansdian National Committe foi Mental Hygiene .

a judge from the bench in commenting on the case of a man who claimed to have been.;wrongfully confined in an institution for the insane. i • • '

Judges, iilce. most other people, sometimes make extreme statements, and this is ah extreme statement. It is quoted,,: however, be-cause the j udge expressed more than his own opinion. He expressed the views of a very large number of people. '

In the first place it is probable that tliis^partlcuiar judge had very little first-hand information concerning institutions for tlie insane. Tiie fact of hij> having used the term "lunatic asylum," is evidence that he v/as thinking of days tiiat, except for a few backward communities, are now happily past. No longer is the term cvcnii.sed; institutions for those suffering from mental disorders are now known as "mental hospitals."

With this change in name, has come a great change in character. The asylum of old has, in mpst cases, given place to the modern ho.spital with a staff of trained nur-.es and doctors. The food is good, well prepared, and usually ample. Occupation is provided, and usually every effort is made to bring about recovery and make it possible for the patients to return to their homes.

Tiie most valid criticinm • of tiie mental hospitals of Canada is that most • of; tiicin are v/oefully overcrowded. But that is not the fault of the hospital management. It is tlie fault, primarily, of people, who like the judge quoted liere, take iio steps to learn anything about tiie mental hospitals in their own province, v riio hold antiquated views concerning tiieni and the whole subject of mental disorders, and v/lio do nothing to bring about improved coiiditions. ,

the developments on The .Rand, which no' visitor to Africa will miss, but the diamond rush to the Klmberley mines In 1870 Is unique. The first discovery was made by a trader, who picked up a bright-colored stone a child had been playing with. The assay proved this a spectacular diamond and now at th« mere mention of Kim-berley the whole world . visions "diamonds" in glittering heaps. In barely forty years these min<es have yielded $1,000,000,000 worth of these gems. Think of the joy of seeing rough diamonds come out of the earth and being able to buy them. This Is .a pleasure In store

for next winter's adventurers to Africa.

Ostrich feather farms' are one of the oddities of Africa destined to thrill the heart of every feminine visitor and, wonderful to relate, Paris fashions are sent out by parcel post to Johannesburg and reach there before they come to Canada. However, there are still plenty of natives In their national garb, and talking- drums and Zulu war dances to be seen and heard. In fact, the war dances are a Sunday morning Institution in the kraals at the mines and are encouraged by the Owners as an antidote to labor troubles. Q
