CSDA 2nd Annual Movember
Last Fall marked the beginning of
Shepherd University’s Movember
Campaign. Though it was by many
measures a pilot year, the campaign will
be coming back in full force this year. In
an effort to encompass all of Shepherd
University and beyond, founding
members of the group—Matt
Myers, Andrew Price, and
Micah Johnson—intend to
incorporate various program-
ming collaborations this year.
The Movember movement
encourages male participants
to grow their facial hair to
promote an awareness for
men’s health—particularly
prostate and testicular
cancer. Many strands of the
nationwide movement focus
only on mustache growth, but
any and all kinds of facial
hair growth is
appropriate. Women
actively participate as well
by contributing to
conversation and wearing
fake mustaches. Look for
the curly mustache signs
and get involved this

reflect the growth of
the program and
changing needs of
professionals. We
continue to work with
one full-time faculty
and a number of very
dedicated affiliate
faculty to ensure the
success of the
program.
*This is a pretty big asterisk.
The research was predomi-nately completed by Rachael McLoud ’14 as part of her
practicum. Her work collecting and thematizing the data reduced this process
by at least a full semester!

Sexual Orientation Summer Elective
Chi Sigma Alpha Events
The highlight of summer 2015
for the CSDA program was
the elective option a course
engaging in topics of sexual
orientation and
gender identity in higher
education. This course
examined issues at institutions,
development theories, and
issues of discrimination among LGBTQ faculty, staff, and
students. The students in this
course got to partake in
debates, engage in authentic
discussion, and attend the 2015 Pride Day in Washington, DC. Students got the opportunity to experience their discussion topics outside of class. Performances, advocacy groups, and human rights campaigners are some of the great things you can experience by attending a Pride Day event.
“The pride festival in DC was
as impactful and educational as
it was sheer fun. The event
afforded me an opportunity to
soak in the wealth of diversity
that is the Queer community
as well as interact with people
from very different
backgrounds and experiences.
Surrounded by and being part
of an event celebrating Queer
love was not something I'll
soon forget. ” – Andrew Price

History of Higher Ed Students at
Storer College
Many Shepherd University
courses benefit from the
proximity of significant
historical sites to campus.
Such was the case for the
field trip to Storer College
in Harpers Ferry last
April. The event was open
to any Shepherd
University student, staff,
or faculty member, and it
was organized by Student
Activities and Leadership.
CSDA 510: History of
Higher Education
students also attended, as
Storer College is of
particular relevance to the
course learning objectives.
The trip included a guided
tour of the main building
with integrated stories and
presentations about
founding members and
students within the context
of John Brown’s raid and the
sensitive period of racial
discrimination that followed
it. In tracing the lineage of
Storer College as a
historically black college or
university (HBCU),
participants were immersed
in the idea of education
for all who seek it—a
concept that was very
rare in 1865, when the
college opened its
doors. The field trip was
a fully engaging
experience with history
and education.
As many of you may have
heard, Shepherd University
alumnus and beloved former
Shepherdstown resident Brian
Filon passed away
unexpectedly on August 17. A
