3. Group work. Role play.

T: Perfect! A good beginning makes a good ending. This time your task will be a bit difficult.

As you know from psychology, many of the answers for human behavior can be found in people’s temperaments or personalities. There are four fundamental personality types:  sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic.

Repeat after me:Sanguine [ ˈs?ŋɡwɪn ]Choleric [ˈkɔlərɪk]Melancholic  [melənˈkɔlɪk]Phlegmatic [fleg'm?tɪk]

T: Look at the screen and read about these temperaments:SanguinePeople with this temperament tend to be playful, lively, carefree, talkative,

and pleasure-seeking. They may be warm-hearted and optimistic. They are sociable persons. They laugh for the hard days and always have the energy to start.

CholericThis temperament is fundamentally ambitious   and leader-like. People with

this temperament always have a positive attitude in life. Their motto is usually "do it now." They can show leadership, are good at planning, and are often practical.

Phlegmatic People with this temperament may be principled, reasonable, calm, patient,

and tolerant. They are peaceful persons. Idealist is best characterized by the words "easy going". They are silent, controlled, good listener, and always happy with their life.

Melancholic People with this temperament often prefer to do things themselves, they are

not sociable. They respond to others in a slow and indirect manner. They are well organized. People with this temperament will ask specific questions and sometimes they will ask the same question again and again.

8

Page 9: Theme: Person’s Character, Behaviour, Mood and Mannersosvita.ua/doc/files/news/496/49612/Urok.doc  · Web viewIn my view Personality is your behavior with others, your thinking

T: Now, we shall do some group work. Split into four groups. You have cards. Your task is to act the following situation. The task of other groups is to guess the types of temperament.

All of you on your way to college saw something, thought about something, felt something. And now let's speak about your feelings, thoughts and emotions on your way to college.

And now you have cards. Your task is to act the following situation. The task of other groups is to guess the types of temperament. You have 30 seconds.

Sanguine: As for me, this morning was nice and good. Bright sun, fresh air, golden leaves. My way to school was full of pleasure. I looked at nice and pretty girls. I saw only smiling children, I heard wonderful birds' songs. My mood was so bright, that I wanted to sing.

Phlegmatic: My way to school? What do you want to know? Was anything interesting? Maybe. I don't remember. Perhaps, several girls speaking about boys; some boys, walking along the street. What else? Dogs, cats, and everything like every day. That's all, nothing special.

Melancholic: Morning? Was it a real morning? It was an awfully dangerous meeting with cold weather, dirty pavements, grey sky. Children? All the time they wanted to push me into deep pools. Autumn? A lot of crows, flying and trying to make my clothes dirty. By the way, they cried like crazy. What else? Oh, and besides, I went to school! Oh, my God!

Choleric: My way to school? OK, I shall tell you. Now, now. Let me think. Oh, I left my bag! No, it is here. OK. Let's start. I woke up, had breakfast and... Oh, my God! Where is my key? How shall I open the door? Oh, it is here. Well, walking to school I saw a lot of things: my friends, my teachers, my... I don't remember. Oh, it's time to go. To go — where? But I must run.

4. Reading

T: What thing do you usually notice about new people when you meet them for the first time? For example, do you typically notice their eyes, clothes, voice, hair, body language or something else?

Possible answers:S1: The first thing I notice about a person is their eyes. The eyes are the

windows of the soul. I think the eyes tell you a lot about a person.S2: I notice the way she talks and of course body language.

T: Do you think it’s possible to tell what person is like by studying this person’s face?

T: The face is a map of our personality. And now read the text “Reading Faces” and say what facial reading is.

9

Page 10: Theme: Person’s Character, Behaviour, Mood and Mannersosvita.ua/doc/files/news/496/49612/Urok.doc  · Web viewIn my view Personality is your behavior with others, your thinking

READING FACESYou’ve heard of palm reading; but what about facial reading? Yes, you may

be able to read someone’s character by studying his or her face. A close look at their features, expression, and gestures may tell you a lot about a person. Here are a few things to look for.

Study the person’s face and you’ll be able to see their strengths, weaknesses, and destination. A person with a large head may be very clever. A low brow may denote cunning, while a wide brow suggests sensitivity and intellect. Wide-set eyes may reveal a person who is careful and watchful, while close-set eyes may indicate greediness. Pursed lips often belong to fearless or aggressive individuals.

Examine the person’s eyes. A subject who returns a frank stare may be curious or honest. A person who cannot hold an eye-locking gaze for more than a second or two may be shy, modest, anxious, or guilty. One who stares into space or in another direction, like out the window, could be worried or bored.

Pay attention to gestures or expressions. A tight mouth might reveal that someone is nervous, irritated, or dishonest. When someone turns his or her face from you in a half-angle, the person could be trying to hide something. Looking down or away also may suggest shyness or a lack of openness.

You will need to put all the clues together and in this way you can tell something of an individual’s character and personality.

T: Well, and now match items in column A with those in column B:A В

1) a large head A. worried or bored2) a low brow B. nervous, irritated, or dishonest3) a wide brow C. greediness4) wide-set eyes D. fearless or aggressive

5) close-set eyesE. the person could be trying to hide something

5. Panel discussion

10

Page 11: Theme: Person’s Character, Behaviour, Mood and Mannersosvita.ua/doc/files/news/496/49612/Urok.doc  · Web viewIn my view Personality is your behavior with others, your thinking

T: Well done! Now we are going to have a panel-discussion. At home you had to prepare information about what colours can say about person character. Are you ready to present it? Listen attentively and be ready to do the tests.

Narrator: Welcome to our talk show “What your favourite colour says about you”. Recent psychological studies prove that preference for a colour can reveal the person’s character. So, today we are going to speak about your favourite colour and what it says about you. For instance, calm and peaceful people prefer one colour while those who are dynamic, active and confident like another. On today’s program we’re going to talk about colours, what they mean, and what they can do for you.. We’d like to hear psychologists’ point of view on the problem. We have invited some guests – psychologist to the studio to participate in it. Please tell us a little bit about colours.

Psychologist 1. Let’s start with red. Many people are afraid to wear this colour because it’s so bright. If you see someone wearing red, you can be sure they are very brave. If red is your favourite colour it means you are full of life, energetic and good-humored. You have many interests to which you give a lot of attention. You are always on the move. You like to practice various sports and meet new friends.

Host of the Show 1. What about blue? I’ve heard that people who wear this colour are very mean.

Psychologist 2. That’s not true. In fact, they are usually very kind. Blue represents tranquility and calm. They like to be in harmony with their surroundings and feel safe in them. They have a balanced attitude towards everything. Before making any move, they reflect upon it and when they have made their decision, they do it with great care. They are considered to be an affectionate person.

Host of the Show 2. I thought people who wore green were calm.

Psychologist 3. No, no — quite the opposite, in fact! They’re usually quite jealous people, and for that reason often become angry. If green is your favourite colour, it means you are dynamic and quite active. You are very much aware of what is happening inside you and around you. You control your emotions very well and like to be open towards others. This balance allows you to understand every situation well and make the right choice. You are always looking to improve your situation and that of those around you. In fact you are ready to help everybody. You have a friendly character and you are very sociable.

Host of the Show 3. What about black, then — the most popular colour of all?

Psychologist 1. Everybody knows that black represents power and money. Black is a relief color for most people, like "Mom's apple pie". It makes them feel

11

Page 12: Theme: Person’s Character, Behaviour, Mood and Mannersosvita.ua/doc/files/news/496/49612/Urok.doc  · Web viewIn my view Personality is your behavior with others, your thinking

comfortable and even, in some cases, smaller, allowing them to hide from the world. People who wear black a lot, though, can sometimes be mean. They don’t like sharing things. They’re not all bad, though, as they’re often quite happy and smile a lot. They are independent, strong-willed and non-emotional. They like to keep people at a distance.

Host of the Show 4. That’s very interesting. What about purple?Psychologist 2. Purple is the colour of authority and power. Purple is a

colour that belongs to someone who is very loyal and a little shy. They are sensitive and thinking of others before yourself – they are the person others come to for help - being needed motivates you but sometimes people take advantage of you. Purple-lovers usually make very good friends. People who prefer purple are usually thirsty for knowledge. Next time you see someone wearing purple, talk to them!

Host of the Show 5. Well, I’ll think about it. So, do you have anything else to tell us?

Psychologist 3. Yes... Let me tell you about yellow and white. A person who wears yellow has a serious nature. They’re also warm-hearted, though, and they love children and animals. White, now... White is the colour honest people wear. Like green-lovers, they’re also sociable and enjoy meeting people.

Host of the Show 6. Well, thank you very much.

T: Thank you for your work. And now choose correct items:

1. Colour can describe…a. people and their habits;b. people and their deeds;c. people and their personalities.

2. People who wear blue…a. never lose their temper;b. are quite jealous;c. are very sociable.

3. Mean people wear … a lot.a. yellow;b. black;c. green.

4. Black represents…a. weakness and poverty;b. fame and money;c. power and money.

5. Loyal and shy people prefer …a. purple;

b. white;c. yellow.

6. A person who wears yellow…a. is sociable;b. can sometimes be mean;c. has a serious nature.

2. Listening

T: Perfectly! According to graphologists, it’s possible to read someone’s personality from their handwriting. Now you’ll listen to the text about graphology.

Character Through HandwritingMore and more psychologists and handwriting experts begin to think that

your handwriting can tell a lot about your character. So every time when you take a pen you must know that you give yourself away.

You may think that you can deceive the experts by changing your handwriting. But you will still give yourself away, they say.

Everybody writes in different ways at different times. For example, if you write a note to say thanks-for-the-party, it will be different from the one you write to tell the boss you are sorry to be leaving. Your shopping list will be written differently from the long letter to your mother. Still you can’t deceive the experts.

Whether you write fast, slowly and carefully, left-handed or right-handed, they can tell the sort of person you are.

It is size, pressure and slant that give you away. These three factors can reveal your intelligence, your imagination and your

strength of personality. And how good you would be for this or that job.Size is an indicator of how important you think you are. If your capital letters

are very large, you think much of yourself. If the capital letters are small, you could be in the wrong job. Small capital letters are a sign of nervous, careful people who agree with everybody.

Big writing means you have a big heart, you are friendly.Pressure gives you away; too. That is, the way you press down on your pen.

The harder you press, the harder you will work. And you are also more energetic and take the initiative more often.

If you don’t press too hard, it means that your work is not very important to you.

Slant shows whether you are happy and carefree or disturbed by different problems.

If your writing slopes backwards, it could show that you are very emotional. And if some of your letters go one way and some another, it almost certainly means that there is something wrong in your relations with friends and relatives.

13

Page 14: Theme: Person’s Character, Behaviour, Mood and Mannersosvita.ua/doc/files/news/496/49612/Urok.doc  · Web viewIn my view Personality is your behavior with others, your thinking

The experts now say that they can spot heart trouble and cancer in a patient’s writing style.

T: Listen again and mark if the sentences are true or false:

Mark if the sentences are true or false:1. If you write a note to say thanks-for-the-party, it will be simple with the one

you write to tell the boss you are sorry to be leaving. (F)2. Size is an indicator of your traits of character. (F)3. If your capital letters are very large, you think much of yourself. (T)4. Small capital letters are a sign of easy-going, careful people who agree with

everybody. (F)5. Big writing means you have many friends. (T)6. If you press hard, you are energetic. (T)7. If you don’t press too hard, it means that your work is very important to you.

(F)8. Slant shows that you are happy and responsible. (F)9. If your writing slopes backwards, it could show that you are very emotional.

(T)10. If some of your letters go one way and some another, it means that you have

many problems with your friends and relatives. (T)

7. Project work

T: At home you prepared personal characteristic of someone in your group. Who wants to read? All the rest have to listen attentively and guess who he or she is.

S1: She is a well-bred, merry and kind person. She is very tactful and shy. She is a pleasant person to deal with, she never loses her temper. She also has a kind heart and a strong will. She is always ready to help her friends. She always manages to be amusing and cheerful. She is an easy-going girl. I am very happy to have such a friend.

S2: He is popular with his fellow-students and most of his teachers. He works hard in his classroom, but sometimes he can be noisy. He is full of energy. He is always willing to help teachers and students. He is generally good-tempered. Some of his groupmates think he is loud and bossy; others think he is a very lively person. He is intelligent, full of energy and seems to have opinions about everything. He is constantly the centre of attention. The classmates see him also as kind, considerate.

S3: She is quite witty, amusing and she always cheers the classmates up. She has a wonderful sense of humour. I think her only fault is endless chatting with her

14

friends in the lesson. She is not attentive; she doesn’t have good marks at college because she doesn’t study enough. I admire her because she is so bright and energetic. And when she is impatient with me, I just laugh and she laughs too.

S4: He is introvert, impulsive, impatient and moody. He seems happy one minute, but miserable and bad-tempered the next for no good reason. He can’t control his feelings and not get angry if other people annoy him! Sometimes he has a lot of quarrels with his friends! Sometimes I don’t understand him. But he is generous, kind-hearted and easy-going, always ready to help. (Андрей Яковлев)

8. Discussion

T: Well! Now, let's discuss what traits of character you find the most important for a teacher. Don't forget to explain why. Give your opinion. So, you know that teacher`s heart is so big and so individual. Put stickers on our great teacher`s heart.

Possible answers:

S1: In my opinion, a good teacher must be a well-educated person. You can’t teach what you don’t know. So a teacher must be master of his subject. He goes on learning his subject during all his career to be able to answer any question.

S2: I think the most important feature for teacher is to enjoy his profession and love children. If a teacher loves his profession and his students he is ready to devote themselves to such a difficult profession, such a hard work as being a teacher. A teacher who is full of love for his work is motivated, energized, and creative; he is open and can share his positive emotions with the students.

S3: To my mind, an ideal teacher must be a man of culture. He should have a sense of duty and responsibility. He should be honest to himself, to his students and to his profession. He is an engineer of the soul. In other words, an ideal teacher is a student's friend, philosopher and guide.

S4: In my view, an ideal teacher is the teacher who knows how to win the children, kind, intelligent. And it is the most important thing; he must have a good sense of humor. All the teachers are good if they love children. It should help them when it is necessary.

S5: As for me, a good  teacher must possess leadership qualities, should do

whatever he says, to enable the students to follow him. He must have great confidence and strong will power to obtain the best results from his students.

S6: In my opinion, an ideal teacher must not only educate but also understand the problems and feelings of the students. An ideal teacher can explain the course

15

material in a fresh and new way. He should ask for a little homework and try to explain all at the lesson.

S7: I think an ideal teacher must be responsible, modern, because now so many new computer technologies and programs, that can help in training.

S8: In my view, the best teacher should be kind, polite, with a good sense of humour and optimistic. But at the same time, the best teacher should be strict.

S9: I think the ideal teacher can be creative in several different ways. Creativity can be expressed in thought, actions, and emotion.

S10: In my opinion teachers should have good morals and good manners. Children learn from and copy adult behavior, whether it is good or bad. It is an integral part of a teacher’s responsibility to the school and their students.

S11: As for me, an ideal teacher should be calm, tolerant, clever and well-bread. In conclusion, I should say that the real teacher should be a personality.

T: Look at our big heart. I hope in future you will be Great Teachers.

9. Summing-up. Home Assignment.

T: Now it’s high time to sum up everything we’ve done during the lesson. Thanks everybody for the lesson. I hope it was useful for you. You have learned something new and interesting about traits of character of different people. We’ll continue to work with this material in the next lesson. I would like to finish our lesson with the words of Albert Einstein:

“INTELLECT HAS POWERFUL MUSCLES, BUT NO PERSONALITY”.

Thank you for the lesson.See you later.
