UNIFREIGHT Africa says the tough times which it went through over the past few
years have made it more focused. The logistics, freight and pas-
senger transport services provider’s chief executive officer (CEO), Rob-ert Kulpers, said the company’s hard work over the years started to pay off in 2017. He said hard times made the company sterner.
“2017 was a watershed year for Unifreight, the pain and hard work in the prior years is starting to bear fruit. Coming through the lean years has instilled a sterner discipline and forced us to right-size the business,” Kulpers said at the company’s annual general meeting last week.
Unifreight is coming off a peri-od where it had to go through some
“painful” restructuring which includ-ed laying off about 200 employees and effecting pay cuts on the remain-ing staff and management. The com-pany also sold off the local Pioneer services as part of an empowerment deal with its workers.
Kulpers said the company had also benefited from shifting its busi-ness to the low margin operations that include tobacco transportation.
“Our conventional and riski-er strategic moves of doing more low-margin less than truck-load and tobacco as opposed to doing full-load business have proved very effective and increased the overall yield in dollars per kilogramme of freight moved,” Kulpers said.
The company says it recorded a 17 percent growth during the first four months of the year, which is five percent ahead of budget.
Profit for the period was 138 per-
cent ahead of budget, although it was coming off a low base. The compa-ny expects to maintain performance ahead of budget throughout the rest of the year.
Unfreight was exploring elec-tronic commerce which it hopes to tap into after noting the opportuni-ties from the dramatic growth in that space lately.
“The company believes there is a lot of potential in this space, which can be tapped through In-formation Communication Tech-nology solutions such as ap-plications and plug-ins to the swift traditional core business,” said the CEO.
Unifreight says it does not see the recent emergence of railway as a threat but a compliment to its busi-ness, which is the “last mile trans-porter”.

THE Zimbabwe Economic Policy Analysis and Re-search Unit (ZEPARU) says the country still lags behind in trying to solve economic and financial
malfunctions in the market, mainly because commercial banks and financial institutions are not fully playing their expected roles in the economy.
ZEPARU says financial sector distortions have di-verted the central bank from its major oversight role to financing the productive sector which is a prerogative of commercial banks and the private sector.
Sanderson Abel, a keynote speaker during a consul-tative workshop held last week said involving the cen-tral bank in quasi — fiscal activities were counterpro-ductive.
“Central bank intervention in financing brings in dis-tortions in the market as it competes with commercial banks and micro-finance institutions in providing fund-ing to the productive sectors.”
“RBZ should stick to its supervisory mandate and should never get involved in quasi-fiscal activities. Also, the central bank should not peg interest rates,” he said.
Commenting on the use of bond notes in the market, Abel argued that the continued use of the provisional currency had given rise to several challenges that have cemented financial distortions in the country.
“The continued use of bond notes in the market has given rise to the disappearance of the US dollar, which has some of the problems; emergency of parallel pric-ing structures, sale of hard currency at a premium, currency is no longer cir-culating, no deposits of hard currency into banks and that tiered pricing mechanisms have devel-oped,” he highlighted.
Abel further high-lighted that the mismatch between RTGS and real money was causing financial failure in the country.
“The growth in RTGS balances is not consistent with real money balances in the economy, giving rise to infla-tionary pressures which then cause financial alarms,” he said, adding that the advent of mobile financial services has created an uneven playing field between banks and mobile network operators.
He also blamed the government for failing to regu-late non-market behaviour as a major factor influencing financial distortions in the country, saying that govern-ment was failing to provide a stable market.
According to Abel, government should have a bor-rowing plan, underpinned by a statute and should also curb excessive borrowing.
The trained economist said there was need to revive the smooth flow of the financial sector and that govern-ment should play a crucial role in resource mobilisation, facilitate trade, assist in price discovery and help in risk management. He said poorly-managed financial institu-tions affected the proper functioning of the economy.
Commenting on the presentation, financial expert Alphious Ncube said the country was making a fatal mistake by allowing the government to borrow from the central bank as it compromises the independence and functionality of the bank. Ncube opined that this made it hard for the bank to make fiscal follow-ups on outstand-ing issues. — Own Correspondent
