THEMATIC ROBOT CATEGORY RULES
MEVLÂNA'S LIFE
Hz. Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, is known as Hz. Mevlana in
the East and known as Rumi in the West. At birth, his family named
him Muhammed, though he came to be nicknamed Celaleddin. As for
“Mevlana”, it connotes to “our master”, while “Rumi” relates to “the
land of Rum” or “Anatolia”, where he lived. In his lifetime, he was
also referred to as “Hudavendigar”, meaning “distinguished leader”,
whereas his present internationally renowned title “Mevlana” was
very seldom used. The name “Rumi” was added to the end, rather
later on..
Hz. Mevlana was born on September 30, 1207 in the city of Belh, Horasan, which at
the time was inhabited by Turkish tribes; (Belh, today, remains within the boundaries of
Afghanistan).
His mother Mümine was the daughter
of Rükneddin, the “emir” (sovereign ruler) of
Belh and his father, Bahaeddin Veled, was
“Sultanu-l ulema”(chief scholar). His mother
Mümine was the daughter of Rükneddin, the
“emir” (sovereign ruler) of Belh and his
father, Bahaeddin Veled, was “Sultanu-l
ulema”(chief scholar).
Their clash of opinion with Fahreddin-i Razi,
one of his contemporary philosophers, along
with the probability of a Mongol invasion urged him to desert his hometown accompanied by
his entire family. Their migration, via Baghdad, Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Malatya,
Erzincan, and Karaman, ended up, on May 3, 1228, in Konya upon the invitation of Alaeddin
Keykubad, the Seljuk Emperor.
Following his marriage to Gevher Banu in Karaman, Konya, Hz. Mevlana had two sons
whom he named Bahaeddin (Sultan Veled) and Alaeddin. Years later, during his time in
Konya, and after Gevher Banu passed away, Mevlana married Kerra Hatun by whom he had
two more children; another son, Muzafferreddin Emir Alim and a daughter Melike.
As Mevlana begins attending his father’s lessons at a very early age, he pursues the
divine truth and secrets. He acquires Turkish, Arabic, Persian, and common Greek as well as
Classical Greek. He studies the other religions along with Islam. From history to medicine,
he receives his initial education from his father and then from Seyyid Burhaneddin Tirmizi
and other top scholars of the time. Later on he himself, in turn, teaches hundreds of
students in Madrassahs (theological universities).
Meanwhile, Sems-i Tebrizi, not fulfilled by the ultimate spiritual rank he has attained,
is in search of another fellow acquaintance to match his own scholarly wisdom and to enjoy
his company. Sems and Hz. Mevlana, who had their first encounter in Damascus, meet again
in 1244, in Konya. These two God loving velis (guardians), focus intensely on divine
discussions and together they attain heavenly wisdom. With most of his time spent in
endless talks, poetry recitals, and whirling rituals with his spiritual soul mate, jealousy
becomes aroused among Mevlana’s students. Unjust rumours are spread against Sems-i
Tebrizi, who is offended and flees Konya for Damascus. Hz. Mevlana, in his deep grief,
secludes himself from all friends and writes many of his verses which we read in Divan-i
Kebir. The instigators of this unfavorable situation express remorse and a group led by
Mevlana’s son Sultan Veled goes to Damascus and brings back Sems-i Tebrizi. Nevertheless,
jealousy arises once again and Sems, this time, suddenly disappears altogether.
Hz. Mevlana enters a new stage in his life upon the disappearance of his close friend.
He first appoints Sheikh Selahaddin-i Zerkub, who passes away, then he appoints Chalabi
Hüsameddin, one of his own students, to teach on his behalf.
Mevlâna’s Testament to Humanity
“I suggest you;To fear God both secretly and explicitly. To eat less, sleep less, say
less,Obey the orders of God,Not to do harm,Follow your prayers and fasting,Abstain from
lust, Endure the pain and suffering caused by other people,Not to spend time with the
spendthrift and rabble,To be together with the generous and pious ones,The most auspicious
of people is the one who is beneficial to other people. And the most auspicious of sayings is
the short and concise one. Thanks to the one and only God. Salute to the company of unification “
Mevlana died at night on 17 December 1273 and was laid to rest beside his father in
Konya. That night is called “Şeb-i Arus” by dervishes.
Mevlana’s Major Works
The daily language of the time was Turkish, the
scientific language was Arabic, while Persian was the
language of literature. For this reason Hz Mevlana’s
books are all in Persian. They were all translated into
Turkish at a later time.
I. DÎVÂN-I KEBÎR: The gazels, delivered by him during various periods are collected
under the titles Divân-ı Kebîr or Dîvan-ı Şems-I Tebrîzî. (Since Mevlânâ considered himself
as “one” with Şems-I Tebrîzî, he used this as a pseudonym in his poems). In his poems,
various aruz meters are used and various subjects are approached
II. MESNEVİ: Mevlânâ’s greatest work is Mesnevî, which can be counted as one of
the most important masterpieces in Turco-Islamic art. In this piece, which consists of more
than 25000 couplets, the Islamic idea is presented through many tales and proverbs. Its
meter is ““fâilatün/ fâilatün/ fâilün” of aruz prosody, and the couplets are rhymed. The first
18 couplets were written down by Mevlânâ himself and the rest was inscribed by Çelebi
Hüsâmeddin [22].
III. FÎHİ MÂ FÎH: Fîhi-mâ-fîh is the written down talks of Mevlânâ in Persian
language and is written in prose. In this book, the verses of Quran are interpreted and
hadiths are explained. Thus, the mystic views about world, afterlife, deeds, and morality are
explained through instructive tales
IV. MEKTÛBÂT: Mektûbat is another work in prose by Mevlânâ. It is a collection of
145 letters written by him, most of which are addressed to Alêddin Keykûbat, other notables
of Seljuk State and his friends
V. MECÂLİS-İ SEB'A: Another work by Mevlânâ is Mecâlis-I Seb’a, which is an
Arabic-Persian prose composed of his seven sermons or advices. These sermons are
believed to have been given before his meeting Şems-i Tebrîzî in Konya mosques and that
they were written down by his son Sultan Veled and other scribes
Rumi's Seven Pieces of Advice
In generosity and helping others: be like the river
In compassion and grace: be like the sun.
In concealing others’ faults: be like the night.
In anger and fury: be like the dead.
In modesty and humility: be like the soil.

THEMATICROBOT CATEGORY RULES
“AHİCAN IS IN KONYA ,THE CITY OF TOLERANCE”
Thematic robot competition consists of a platform and a course.
Platform; It is the area that all games of this competition are played.
Course; It represents Great Seljuk Emire where Mevlana born and State of Anatolian
Seljuk where he lived.Course is formed by four stage tasks.
Two teams will race on the platform at the same time with two autonomous robots.
In this guide, autonomous robots are called robot.
Before racing, robots will be placed starting points of both course A and B and one
operator of each team will be ready for racing.
There are two boxes on conveyor belts at starting points of both course A and B. One
of them represents Mevlana’s book “Mesnevi” and the other represents the reed pencil using
art of Hat. Timing of both teams will start when the conveyor belts run and race starts.
Robots complete the following tasks respectively.
G.1. Second robot picks up the box from starting point and delivers it to first robot,
G.2. First robot arrives to location-1 with the box-1 and then barrier is removed
automatically,
G.3. First robot arrives to location-2 and then turn around itself at least one times like sema
show,
G.4. First robot passes through location-3 and stops at location-4. Here it calls second robot,
G.5. Second robot picks up the box-2 and then moves,
G.6. Second robot arrives location-2 and turns around itself at least one times as sema
show,
G.7. Second robot passes location-3 and put the box-2 out of course. Box-2 represents reed
pencil. Around of location-3 represents “Makta” which is explain at the following.
Makta: It is a kind of sharpener to sharpen the reed
pencil which is used for art of hat making. It is a plate that has
2-3cm width,15-20cm lenght and 2-3mm thickness made by
wooden, bone or ivory.
G.8. When second robot puts down box-2 to ground, first
robot moves with box-1 and enters Konya zone and then lights up one of Mevlana’s seven
advices.
It is assumed that game is over if team completes all tasks and lights up one of
Mevlana’s seven advices. Its chronometer will stop.
Team that gets best score in shortest time will go next race.
Digital Chronometer: It is located in competition area as seen from everywhere.
