(1896) (Ms 1089), the operas Kenilworth (1906) (Ms 1062) and A Border Raid (1883) (Ms 1086) are worth noting among the many orchestral (three concertos, four symphonies, and a number of

suites, marches and orchestral preludes), chamber and vocal works. Frederick Corder

(1852-1932), another Academy student who later became a professor of composition and cura

tor, is remembered today primarily as the teacher of a new generation of British composers —

Bax, Bantock and Holbrook. A small collection of his music is represented in the collection.

The collection of manuscripts by Charles Steggall (1826—1905) and his son Reginald Steggall

(1867—1938), both of whom were students and then organ professors at the Academy, makes a

substantial part of the collection. Charles Steggall's works are represented mainly by vocal music

(Mss 1156 to 1159), an Evening Service in C (1878?) for voices and orchestra and two cantatas com

posed during the mid-nineteenth century. Reginald Steggall's works include two suites for orches

tra (Mss 1160 and 1161) as well as a "dramatic symphony" entitled The Spanish Student (1900)

(Ms 1163) among other orchestral and chamber works.

This is by no means the extent of the archival collection at the Academy. There are many hun

dreds of manuscripts which remain to be catalogued, some of which are still in copyright. The col

lection is also expanding as the Academy is continuously being offered gifts by its professors, stu

dents and friends.

Thematic Catalogue Numbers in Music Uniform Titles: an International Comparison Anders Lönn (Stockholm)

A comparative table of thematic and other catalogues of the works of individual composers, authorized or

recommended by four central music cataloguing agencies as sources for identifying numbers to be used in uni form titles: the Library of Congress (LC); the Deutsches Musikarchiv (DMA); the British Library (BL); and

the Nederlandse omroep bedrijf Music Library (NOB). The listing is intended to serve as a source of informa tion for cataloguers and provide models for other countries where similar lists do not yet exist, and to pave the

way for greater international standardization in at least one feature of music catalogues.

The following comparative table lists thematic and other catalogues of the works of individual

composers, authorized by four central music cataloguing agencies as sources of identifying num

bers for use in uniform titles. (Of other elements as well, which will be largely ignored here.) The

list has been some years in the gestation, and preliminary versions have been circulated at IAML

conferences, where enough interest was shown to convince me that publication in Fontes was in or

der. The survey is intended as a source of information for cataloguers, particularly in countries

where the use of thematic catalogue numbers has not yet become standardized. And if it should

provide the impetus for a national list in any one of them,1 it will have contributed in a small way to one of the objectives for which IAML exists.

The project grew out of my wish to compile just such a list of recommended thematic catalogues for use with the new Swedish cataloguing rules, based on AACR2, that were introduced in

1983—84. An obvious first step was to find out how much of the job had already been done else

where (particularly in A ACR2 countries), and draw upon that wherever possible. David Sommer

field of the Library of Congress went to a great deal of trouble to get me extracts from LC's com

1 The file is available to anyone who sends a blank DOS diskette (5.25" or 3.5") to me at Musikaliska akademiens bibliotek, Box 16 326, S—103 26 Stockholm. Please indicate if you want plain ASCII, WordStar, WordPerfect or Microsoft Word format.

puterized authority records. Patrick Mills (UK) and Heinz Lanzke (Federal Republic of Ger

many) supplied me with lists from their countries, supplemented at a somewhat later stage by an

extensive Dutch list from Lucas van Dijck. To facilitate the inevitable comparison, the table below

was born.

In its present state, then, the table reflects the usages of three national cataloguing agencies (the British Library, the Library of Congress, the Deutsches Musikarchiv) and a fourth (the Music Li

brary of the Nederlandse omroep bedrijf) that effectively functions as such (and uses AACR2). I

am indebted to all my informants, not only for the original material but for later additions and

proof-reading. Any remaining errors are my own. (If there are comparable lists of approved cata

logues in other countries, I would be grateful to know about them, and perhaps update the table

in a future issue of Fontes. Eventually the projected Swedish list which started this exercise in the

first place may be finished and included as well...) As might be hoped, and perhaps even expected, a reasonable consensus exists over the choice

of thematic catalogues and their abbreviations, but there are enough differences not to make this

compilation futile. If it has done nothing else, the project has, I think, helped to draw attention to

the advantages of sharing information about this aspect of music cataloguing. In fact, during the

years that I have worked off and on on the list, I have seen some of the original differences disap

pear: in one or two cases as the direct result of information from this compilation, more often as

various older choices have been supplanted by one definitive new one. The divergences that still

exist — apart from one or two conspicuous cases — lie more in the policies governing the general

use (or non-use) of thematic numbers: even a cursory glance at the table below shows that some

libraries are much fonder of them than others. (Though caution is necessary here: cf. below.) Or

they lie in the way a particular catalogue is used, which this table is rarely able to indicate.

The project has, or so I would hope, a little wider import than to record existing practices as a

model for others. The question of international standardization, not only of the bibliographic des

cription but of headings and uniform titles as well, is being addressed as part of IFLAs program of Universal Bibliographic Control: to what degree such standardization is possible, necessary (in

the promised new world of interactive on-line authority control), or even desirable, is a large issue

that will not be discussed here.

Standardization of music uniform titles (if we limit ourselves for the moment to the question of

identifying numbers) does not only involve choosing a particular numbering system: there is the

more general question already mentioned, to what degree such numbers should be used at all —

for what composers and for which of those composers' works. (Always assuming that uniform ti

tles themselves have been accepted : not the case in all national cataloguing rules.) There are many

good reasons not to use thematic catalogue numbers: the vast majority of the works may have dis

tinctive titles and need no further identification; opus numbers may be plentiful and consistent

and well-known to the patrons; or the numbering scheme of the particular catalogue, whatever its

other virtues, may not be ideal for library cataloguing needs. (For instance, it may be at odds with

the original opus numbering, if the latter is used to define the musical work.)2

Once we have settled on a numbering scheme for a particular composer, should the numbers

be used throughout his production? The AACR2 and RAK principle of omitting opus or thematic

catalogue numbers from distinctive uniform titles is perfectly legitimate for a conventional card

(or list) catalogue. In the automated environment, in on-line database searching, a unique ident

ifying number, identical in any language, can be vastly more helpful than a title, however distinc

tive the cataloguer may think it is. At least until we do have those fully interactive authority files

(which should surely incorporate the numbers in their reference structure, distinctive titles or

not?), wholly transparent to the user. But then the entire concept of uniform titles becomes very

fuzzy indeed...

2 AACR2, for instance, considers one opus to be one work (and works within the opus to be parts of the work). Handel is a

prime example (there are several others) of the effects of switching from opus numbering to a thematic catalogue that gives individual works within the opus individual numbers. (Cf. below for LC's solution to the Handel problem.)

226 A. Lönn: Thematic Catalogue Numbers in Music Uniform Titles

So — in today's world — where do we go from here? New catalogues appear, if not in a steady stream at least in a never-ceasing trickle. And the more limited issue — the choice between (or in

some cases among) different numbering systems for a particular composer - does seem to offer

opportunities for international cooperation. Whether or not we are willing to change our existing

practices — and in quite a few cases we are — there is no reason why we should not share the labour

of selecting new catalogues to be used (or not). For this we need two things: (1) a channel of com

munication for those who make decisions about prospective catalogues, and (2) a means of com

municating the decisions, once they are made, to the music cataloguers at large. For the former,

ordinary mail would do — the electronic variety would do a lot better. We are talking about major libraries: it should not be beyond the bounds of possibility to set up e-mail accounts for the few

persons involved, if they do not already have them. My own network address, pour encourager les

autres, is P29889 OQZCOM.BITNET (equally valid for EARN users). (Of course any music lib

rarian who wanted to should be allowed to join in.)

LC regularly reports its adoption of new catalogues in the Music cataloging bulletin. (There is no similar current information from other libraries that I know of, but then the MCB has no

counterpart in any other country. ) These notices could easily be duplicated in Fontes, supplement ed by similar reports from other countries, and expanded to include any particular conventions

for using the catalogues and comment on catalogues evaluated but not adopted. (I would be per

fectly willing to serve as a clearing-house for such information, and update the present table at the

same time.)

User's instructions

The table includes catalogues authorized by the Library of Congress (LC);3 by the Deutsches

Musikarchiv (DMA), Berlin (from the appendix in the EST-Datei (Einheitssachtiteldatei) des Deutschen Musikarchivs. 1. Aufl. Berlin: Deutsche Bibliothek, 1987);4 by the British Library

(BL), London;5 and by the Nederlandse omroep bedrijf (formerly stichting) Music Library (NOB), Hilversum.6

A couple of the institutions have reported non-thematic catalogues used for determining forms

of titles, opus numbers and the like; the others have not. The fact that a catalogue is NOT mention

ed by one or more of them may mean either that the library decided not to use it, or that it has

not yet decided whether to use it, or that it has not yet had occasion to (decide whether to) use it.

In other words, only catalogues in actual use by the institution concerned are included.7

In general, the data included here do not go beyond the information originally supplied to me.

A certain amount of editing has been done to ensure consistency and facilitate the use of the table.

When there are conflicting forms of a composer's name, the New Grove one has been chosen

(even when it seems distinctly unfamiliar to librarians - Rakhmaninov!), since usage varies even

between US and UK AACR2.

The bibliographic descriptions are brief and somewhat normalized. Composer names ("A bib

liography of the works of...") are usually omitted from the title when no ambiguity results. When

the cited title is the work of a composer, the name of the editor has been included in a standard

3 Information supplied by David Sommerfield in December 1984, and updated in November 1987 (with a few later additions from the Music cataloging bulletin). 4 Information and advice supplied by Heinz Lanzke 1984—1987. 5 Information originally supplied by Patrick Mills in 1984, updated by Malcolm Turner in March 1988. 6 Information supplied by Lucas van Dijck in 1986, updated in August 1988. 7 In this the DMA list differs from the similar one in the Regelnßr alphabetische Katalogisierung. Sonderregelnßr Musikalien und Musiktonträger : RAK-Musik. Wiesbaden : Reichert, 1986 (not intended to be exhaustive), and that of the BL from the one compiled by the IAML UK Branch, now published in Brio v. 25 (1988), no. 1, p. 25-30. In both cases, the deviations are minor.

ized format. Place of publication and publisher have been added by me where necessary if the in

formation was readily available (this usually means in my own library catalogue or the Brook bib

liography), on the assumption that it would be more useful than not, particularly for smaller li

braries. Reprints, however, have only been included when mentioned in my sources: the effort in

volved in further searching would go far beyond the aims of the present listing. Abbreviations for the catalogues/indexes are given in ( ). "same" refers to the immediately pre

ceding title and means that the identical work is used (when an edition is specified the same edi

tion as well), though not necessarily that it is used in the same way. "GroveB" in some BL entries

refers to the series The New Grove composer biographies, when the work lists given there are re

vised and should be preferred to those in the main dictionary. - Comments in ( ) stem from my

sources, those in [ ] are my own.
