Later came a ski boat. He signed up with the Sea Scouts, sailing all the way to the coveted Quartermaster Award. In college, he was a midshipman in the University of Washington’s Navy ROTC. Then came active duty in the U.S. Navy itself, where he served for nearly 31 years. Hoist a signal flag if you detect a theme here. “I grew up with boats,” David says. Just one little hiccup. “I get seasick,” he says. “In the Navy, I was on destroyers and was never really comfortable.” Fathoms away on the seafaring spectrum, David also served as com- manding officer of the ballistic-missile submarine USS Tecumseh — “I spent eight years, day for day, submerged, most of the time well below any wave motion; it’s like sitting in your living room,” he says — except he was underwater, and working, and far from home. A jalousie trellis and motorized retractable shade on the west-facing deck help protect against the sun. “In the summer, we drop those down to make it comfortable,” says homeowner David. “The sun goes down over Camano Island.” For their third project together, architect Bruce Donnally de- signed a traditional vacation home for Jeanne and David, whose family had owned a small 1920s-era cabin on this secluded stretch of Tulalip shoreline since 1946. “All the trims and details (the true stone veneer base, stained cedar shingles, and painted board and batten siding) are part of the theme; they’re all very thoroughly thought out,” Donnally says. These days, after retiring as aprofessor of Naval Science at UWand the commanding officer ofits Navy ROTC, David skippers amuch smaller fleet — one 8-footdinghy with a Johnson 3hp motor— and, with his wife, Jeanne, ashipshape, intricately shingledhome on a special stretch ofTulalip shoreline.

“The property had been inDavid’s family since 1946,” saysBruce Donnally (Donnally Archi-tects), the architectural admi-ral of David and Jeanne’s newShingle Style, high-bank vacationhome. “A tiny 24-foot-squarehouse had stood on the land for90 years.”

David and his two siblingsspent the summers here withtheir mother, then ended up own-ing the cabin. It was big on rusticcharm, but with just one above-grade bedroom — and two lesserones in the cinder-block base-ment, “with the mice,” Jeanne

says — “People didn’t want to come and stay.”The first thought was to simply add a second

story, Donnally says, but, “The cabin had beencobbled together, and a bad foundation is likehaving bad feet. There’s a certain amount ofcharm people want to preserve, but then youdemo it and it’s like a wet cat: There’s nothing

there. If you have to take more than 50 percentdown, it’s not worth saving.”

Codes of all kinds helped guide the next step,which was uphill.

“We built a new one farther upland, using theold house’s footprint as the new parking area,”says Donnally, who previously had collaborated

David cut and refinished a pair of old-growth clear fir beams from his family’s original cabin to createthe coffered, but not-too-tall, ceiling in the living room. “The beams are decorative and helped breakthe space up for a more intimate cabin feel,” says Donnally. “David said, ‘Give me a fireplace, cozy,size-wise, where we can sit and talk.’ Some homes have 20-foot-tall ceilings with log columns; theylack the intimacy.” ▼

with David and Jeanne on an addition totheir Magnolia home, and on a remodel ofan apartment building they own. “Davidwanted at last to enjoy looking out over thewater he had sailed beneath all those years,so all the living spaces and bedrooms have apanoramic view of the water.”

From the brand-new, views-for-forever,way-above-water living room (beneath acoffered ceiling embellished by a pair of old-growth clear fir beams reclaimed from thecabin), giant windows (plus more nearby,in the dining area) look across Port Susantoward Camano, Whidbey and Hat islands,and possibly to the edge of the Earth.

“This literally reminds me of my surfaceship: sitting way up high and seeing watereverywhere,” David says.

for the Hungry Garden, brimming withvegetables that are contributed to the localfood bank. The path continues into theSight-Disabled Garden, filled with plantsthat appeal to our senses other than sight.There’s also the Native Plant Section, theHerb Garden, Heather Garden, FragranceGarden, Hellebore Display and the TunnelGarden covered with flowering vines.

Among the gardens most loved bythe kids are the Hummingbird/ButterflyGarden; the Crazy Garden (sporting theamazing bowlasaurus and other highlyimaginative creatures); the CarnivorousPlant Garden (keep your hands in yourpockets); and the big-time favorite of bothkids and adults, the Puzzle Garden, packedwith fun riddles created with plants andprops.

The garden contains amazing art, aswell. Make sure to give gigantic Olaf a hug(he looks scary, but he’s really very nice),and be ready to run for cover when you seeHoppy the enormous hop aphid leap intoview.

Kids’ tours always end with a hands-onproject: anything from planting seeds orpotting up a flower to propagating plantsfrom cuttings. Finally, take advantage ofthe optional tour of the seed-packagingfacility, which Ed offers after the gardentour. The machines in the facility werebuilt in the 1800s, and it’s fascinating tosee how they are still used to packageseeds today.

By the way: The riddles in the PuzzleGarden are quite challenging. Don’t beembarrassed if the kids on the tour figureout the answers way before you do. Edtells me that the kids always beat the livingtweedle out of adults when it comes tosolving the puzzles.

Which is also why Kuzaro likes to hireyoung people with a cooking background.They already know how to wield a knife,and whensomeone needs arecipe or advice,they can help.Mostly he looksfor people skills,because anyone working in the Marketneeds to “embrace the atmosphere,” he sayswith a chuckle. The fish market next doordraws crowds when workers start throwingfish, and Kuzaro is happy to sell the touristsall the pepperoni and jerky they can eat.

At home, Kuzaro is the griller. He saysyou can’t go wrong with a bone-in rib steak:grass-fed, grain-finished, well-marbled,dry-aged in-house, seasoned with a Mon-treal-style dry rub made for Don & Joe’s.He says to leave it at room temperature foran hour, then grill it 3 or 4 minutes on eachside over medium heat for medium-rare.Sounds good — I’ll take two.

“One of the great joys of asubmarine is going in and out ofport on the surface,” says David.“Having spent summers hereas a kid, there’s a magic to that,too. There’s a shared joy, andintimacy, in the expanse andavailability of the water.”

so meeting Diana and her family was his“welcome-to-diversity moment.”

After graduating from high school, Kuzarotook classes at Green River College, but soonwas drafted, and served in the Navy on anaircraft carrier in Southeast Asia from 1972 to1976. He and Diana became penpals and thenbegan dating. When he returned to Seattle,he earned his associate degree and startedlooking for a full-time job. “But the Marketkind of gets into your blood, and I liked allthe interactions, and we both had a lot of tieshere.”

Kuzaro remembers when the only build-ings on Western Avenue were warehouses,and he depended on customers driving infrom as far as Issaquah and Renton. Thenone day, there was a big snowstorm, and hebarely made it in to open the shop, but hehad plenty of customers. That was when herealized how many people can walk to PikePlace Market.

Kuzaro loves the new neighborhood feel ofthe Market, but he wonders whether his youngerclientele will continue to cook. “Or are theyjust going to want to order it online and have itdelivered?”

Some customers come for items that arehard to find, like beef sweetbread, lamb kid-neys, ground suet, skirt steak, freshly groundunseasoned pork or veal. Or, Kuzaro adds, “It
