Foothill to Offer Bachelor’s Degree in Dental HygieneFor the first time in its 57-year

Foothill recently received initial

approval to participate in the

program from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors in consultation

“This is a historic time for California, for community colleges, for employers and

Ed.D. “The opportunity for local community colleges to address regional needs for

highly skilled workers will benefit the local economy enormously. And the opportunity

leaving home or going into debt will enrich lives and change futures.”

“We’re making history! We are thrilled that Foothill students will have the very

the country’s most highly respected dental hygiene programs,” says Foothill Dental

Hygiene Program Director Phyllis Spragge, RDH, M.A. “We’re also performing a

care in California.”

California offers no baccalaureate degree-level dental hygiene programs at its UC or

Earn $4,200 per Academic Year

Apply for STEM-Related ScholarshipsIs working a part-time job taking your time and focus away from becoming a successful student? Would a $4,200 scholarship help you become or remain a full-time college student? Could you use extra cash for textbooks and computer gear? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, apply now for one of the more than 20 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholarships worth $4,200 each that Foothill College will award this year. Funded by the National Science Foundation and Foothill College Science Learning Institute, the scholarships are not loans and you are not required to repay the money. To review the scholarship application, criteria and deadline information, access www.foothill.edu/aid.

Balancing Chemistry, Humanity & The Environment

Green ChemistryDiscover why green chemistry matters—no matter what your academic major is. As one of the most significant emerging fields in modern chemistry, green chemistry balances the optimum use of chemistry with the well-being of humanity and the environment. This spring, get an introduction to green chemistry in the CHEM 20 course. You’ll explore chemistry in a new way, learning the essentials of atoms, molecules, compounds and reactions as you examine environmental topics such as alternative fuels, global warming, the proliferation of plastics, and the impact human activity has on our fragile atmosphere. You’ll use Foothill’s new atomic emission instrument to conduct lab experiments as you examine bioplastics, synthesize biodiesel, and compare these properties to other fuels. You can also study an environmental topic that’s important to you and report your findings to the class. The CHEM 20 course is excellent preparation for Foothill’s three-course general chemistry series (CHEM 1A, 1B and 1C). The five-unit CHEM 20 course transfers to CSU and UC. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.

New Course

Geospatial TechnologiesExplore how we visualize the world around us by enrolling in the GIST 11: Introduction to Mapping & Spatial Reasoning course this spring. Learn why harnessing geospatial technology is particularly important to the private sector, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and others that must demonstrate how market, population and other data change over time. In addition to exploring map reading, how to create an effective map, compass and GPS use, and how mapping can promote sustainability, the course features extensive use of technology, including evaluating digital mapping tools on smart phones, tablets and computers. Understanding mapped data is an essential skill in nearly every academic discipline and many professions. “Foothill’s GIST 11 is a fun class, too,” says Geography & Geospatial Technology Instructor Allison Lenkeit Meezan, M. Phil. “The class is organized around meaningful hands-on group exercises. During each class meeting, you and your fellow students will team up to conduct exercises that expand upon the material presented in course lectures. This gives you the opportunity to delve into the material and have some really fun discussions.” GIST 11 is a core course for the geospatial technology certificate, and counts toward many different transfer majors such as anthropology, business administration, geography, history and political science. The four-unit course transfers to CSU and UC. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.

Integrating Study & Hands-On Experience

Archaeology & Anthropology in Ireland This Summer Explore castles, moated sites and ancient settlements in Ireland this summer as you earn college units and learn about archaeology and applied cultural anthropology. Under the leadership of Foothill Anthropology Instructor Sam Connell, Ph.D., the four-week field study will focus on native Irish resistance to the English invasion in the 12th and 13th centuries. Set for July 4–Aug. 1, the project is based at Ballintober Castle in County Roscommon. You’ll concentrate on finding new archeological sites and participate in all aspects of the project, including surveying, mapping and artifact recording. In addition to fieldwork, you’ll study Irish culture by visiting major attractions and working with a living history museum to conduct experiments in medieval technology. You’ll also earn 12 units and complete an exciting program that includes cultural excursions, lectures and service learning projects. Throughout the experience, you’ll discover how the application of applied anthropology pertains to the modern world. No prior experience in anthropology is necessary. More than 200 Foothill students and community members of all ages and abilities have participated in Foothill’s field study programs. Learn about the curriculum, fees and travel details by attending a free information session March 18 or April 22, at noon and again at 6 p.m. in Room 3102. You need only attend one session. For more program information, call (650) 949-7197 or access www.foothill.edu/anthropology.

Challenge Yourself

Foothill Honors InstituteDig deeper and learn more by participating in the popular Foothill College Honors Institute. Featuring specialized courses and transfer scholarship opportunities, honors courses tend to be more challenging. This spring, Foothill offers numerous honors courses in a variety of disciplines, including astronomy, communication, economics, English, history, music, photography, political science and sociology. Transfer universities recognize the value of the Foothill Honors Institute and actively pursue honors students. As a result, Foothill College is one of an elite few Northern California colleges that participate in the UCLA Transfer Alliance Program (TAP). In fact, 70 to 95 percent of students who participate in TAP are admitted to UCLA’s College of Letters & Science compared to 14 to 20 percent of all other transfer applicants. Foothill honors students are also eligible for guaranteed admission to CSU East Bay and San Francisco State, as well as priority admission consideration and guaranteed housing at UC Irvine. History Happens Here

California, the Multicultural StateFrom the railroad barons to the dot-com boom, learn about California history in the HIST 10: California, The Multicultural State course this spring. You’ll study California’s complex roles in the Gold Rush to today’s innovation economy, including the railroad era, Great Depression, World War II, turbulent ‘60s and the present. You’ll also find out why California is the most diverse place in the U.S. and perhaps the world. The four-unit course transfers to CSU and UC. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.

Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene (continued from front cover)

Spragge says that Foothill’s dental hygiene program was selected for the statewide pilot based on the academic rigor of the program, the number of units it requires for completion of the associate degree, the strength of the job market, and the increasing need for dental hygiene care in California. Since its inception in 1964, the Foothill College dental hygiene program has experienced an impressive history of academic and career-training excellence. In fact, the program’s history includes a 100-percent pass-rate on the dental hygiene national board examination for the past 50 years. Students learn from experienced, caring faculty; train in state-of-the-art clinical facilities; and are supervised at all times as they work on patients. Accredited by CODA and ACCJC, the program’s curriculum includes comprehensive study of basic sciences, oral anatomy, public health, nutrition, clinical dental hygiene, periodontics, pathology and radiology.

Offered at Middlefield Campus & Online

Health MattersDevelop a better understanding of what it means to live a healthier lifestyle in the HLTH 21: Contemporary Health Concerns course. Taught online and evenings at the Foothill Middlefield Campus in Palo Alto by registered respiratory therapist and perinatal pediatric specialist Shirley Treanor, Ed.D., the class emphasizes nutritional behavior, mental health, disease prevention, substance abuse and other timely health-related issues. You’ll study a variety of thought-provoking topics, including the importance of immunizations; public bias toward aging, diabetes, epilepsy, STDs and other types of disease; and culturally related health behaviors and their associated consequences. The four-unit course transfers to the CSU and UC systems. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.

Level Up Your Gaming Skills

Music for Games & Interactive MediaLearn the core skills, industry-standard workflows and concepts involved in composing and implementing music for games and interactive multimedia in the MUS 84C: Music Composition for Games course this spring. The class is ideal for composers, musicians, sound editors and students who want to create music for video games. Find out how modern implementation tools enable your music to dynamically interact with the player. You’ll learn about composing for virtual orchestra, as well as strategies for blending orchestral instruments with drum machines, synthesizers and electric guitars. The course features studio demonstrations, recording sessions and hands-on practice with sample game music on desktop, console and mobile platforms. The four-unit course transfers to CSU. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.

Intellectual Heritage of the Western World

Explore the Birth of Modern ThoughtStudy the roots of contemporary scientific views, political systems, religious attitudes and ethical assumptions in the PHIL 20B: History of Western Philosophy course this spring. Beginning with the Copernican revolution, you’ll examine the philosophic period that led the Western world out of the Dark Ages. In addition to discovering the origin of contemporary moral concepts and how scientific methodology has changed our relationship to the Western concept of God, Philosophy Instructor Mona Rowel says that the PHIL 20B course is ideal for students who want a better understanding of modern thought and its origins. You’ll discover why we stopped thinking the Earth was the center of the universe and what that meant for our collective world view, as well as how we came to the conclusion that government should be concerned with the rights of its citizens. The four-unit course transfers to CSU and UC. For registration information, access www.foothill.edu.

Physics Course Celebrates International Year of Light

Everything You Want to Know about Einstein But Were Afraid to AskThis spring, Foothill presents its PHYS 12: Introduction to Modern Physics course, which is affectionately known as “everything you want to know about Einstein (and his work) but were afraid to ask.” The course also takes a brief look at the effects that physics ideas have had on poetry, fiction, music and the public view of scientists. A recipient of the Innovation of the Year Award for California’s community colleges, the popular course begins with the ideas of Isaac Newton and concludes with the work of Stephen Hawking. Taught by Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi, who was named California Professor of the Year in 2007, PHYS 12 explains Einstein’s revolutionary ideas in everyday language using analogies, visuals and humor instead of math and technical jargon. The evening course coincides with the U.N.’s International Year of Light as well as the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. The class emphasizes key ideas that form the basis of modern concepts of space, time, matter and energy, including how atoms work; energy, heat and the arrow of time; what happens when you travel close to the speed of light; gravity, space-time warps and black holes; and the bizarre rules that govern the world inside the atom. The five-unit course transfers to CSU and UC. For registration instructions, access www.foothill.edu.
