A Community of BoardridersDitch Plains, the beach and surf mecca in Montauk that draws crowds
this time of year from all walks of life, has developed a unifying force in The Montauk Boardriders, a group of established local surfers whose
headquarters sits just a stone’s throw from the famed Ditch surf break.Founded by Charlie Weimar and George Wilson, the club’s mission is to
build a community around professional surf instruction and mentoring. Inspired by the long standing boardrider clubs in Australia, where individuals and fami-lies gathered once a month for fun competition and an after party, the Montauk chapter is hoping to build something similar, and do so on a year-round basis.
With a background in physical therapy, Wilson developed surfing specific programs in Australia, where he and his wife lived for 11 years before moving back to the East End. Weimar comes from a long tradition of commercial fish-ing, with ownership roots at Inlet Seafood in Montauk.
“This area, as all locals and visitors agree, is hard to beat,” said Wilson, who grew up in East Hampton. “So to help establish the Montauk Boardriders is a good next chapter starting with our school and summer programs and our Board-rider competitions, which are not as structured as professional competitions.”
Boardrider clubs in Australia helped create one of the most highly-competi-tive surfing cultures in the world, with almost all Australian professionals having been past or current members of some kind of Boardrider organization.
With a focus on youth across the East End, Montauk Boardriders (montauk-boardriders.com) began in the spring with surf lessons and an after school pro-gram for kids in grades 4-8, to be used as a feeder program for an upcoming East Hampton High School surf club, to be coached by Wilson and Weimar.
“Since not all kids want to play ball sports, we are helping cultivate a culture of kids who are water competent,” Weimar said. “Surfing and ocean knowledge plays a big part of this by building self-confidence and a sense of belonging.”
The Montauk Boardriders “Snack Shack”, located at the western parking lot at Ditch Plains sells local brands such as Coffee Tauk coffee, Gold-berg’s bagels and Burritos from Gringos in Montauk, as well as everything from Harmless Harvest coconut water to ice cream. With music playing and benches nearby, the shack serves as a home base for the newly growing community of Montauk’s own boardriders.

1. Will they complete the job
within budget? Marders gives you
a firm cost, not a +/-10% or so
guesstimate.
2. Will they complete the job on
time? Our crews are on our
payroll and are trained by us.
They remain on your site until
the job is finished.
3.Do they provide a written
guarantee? Marders gives you a
2-year written guarantee which
we’ve stood behind for some
30 years.
4.Will they get all necessary
permits, apply for variances,
appear before Town or Village
Zoning Boards, etc.? Do they
know local regulations?
5.Will you have to settle for
cookie-cutter designs? Most
landscapers have a limited variety
of trees to sell you. The result is
cookie-cutter landscaping.
About half of our multi-million
dollar inventory is big and/or
unusual trees.
