1st Grade: Ms. VardemanFirst graders’ enthusiasm for school and life can be exhausting, but infectious, and teaching them is an exciting, joyful experience… Enthusiasm is “putting your whole heart into what you do.” Whatever the task, no matter how big or small, it will always turn out better when you put your whole heart into it! Another great thing about enthusiasm is—it’s contagious! Just a “spark” of energy and excitement can ignite others to fill their days with enthusiasm. First graders keep my eye on what really matters amid the clamor of testing, schedules and other day-to-day demands. First graders need to have space to be themselves, while still gently nudging them toward growth. They need to have special moments, events, and the surprises they crave. They need to be reminded of their strengths and to help to build on those strengths. It takes enthusiasm. It is exhilarating and no one forgets First Grade! Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened! ~ Dr. Seuss

Kindergarten: Mrs. MetzThe month of May has been an event filled month in Kindergarten. In our classroom we have watched caterpillars make chrysalises and emerge as painted lady butterflies. We made butterfly food by mixing sugar and water together, and putting the mixture on a sponge in our butterfly house. In our ladybug house, we observed small larvae grow, then form a case and change into pink spotted ladybugs. For ladybug food, we soaked raisins in water. We released our ladybugs and butterflies into our school garden recently and the children loved watching them fly! In May, the K students starred in the play “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic”, along with the assistance of the JK class, and they all did a wonderful job. A field trip with 1st grade to the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach was a wonderful way to learn about plants, insects, animals and our environment. The highlight of the field trip was touring the Butterfly House. The Kindergarten students have made so much progress in their reading and writing skills this year. I wish all our Carden families a great summer, and look forward to seeing everyone back in the fall!

3rd Grade: Mr. HendersonThird Grade had an amazing school year! We just wrapped up our final field trip to the planetarium!!! It was an amazing learning experience. The kids enjoyed learning all about the universe! Academically, we’ll end the year strong as we continue to sharpen our math, spelling, reading and grammar skills. Third Grade has truly grown this year, both socially and academically. The work ethic and attention to detail the children had made a huge difference in their learning. The experience this year will have them ready to meet next year’s challenges in fourth grade :-) I wish them all a wonderful summer!

2nd Grade: Mrs. LambertIt’s hard to believe the school year is almost over! I have had such a good time spending the school year with your children. I will truly miss being a part of their daily lives next year as they move on to 3rd grade. The month of May has been filled with fun activities, testing, and completing class work. We are looking forward to the Spring program. I wish everyone a safe and happy summer!

PreschoolWhat a fun and busy month of May we all had! The children enjoyed all the different activities throughout the month, especially on our Olympic Day. It is hard to believe that we are already coming to the end of this school year. We all had a fantastic year of learning, fun, and growth. The Junior Kindergartners are ready for their next adventure and we wish them all the very best for their next adventures and future! The 2 and 3 year old students have gained so many important self-help skills and strengthened their stamina and are ready for their next steps. We are all looking forward to a fantastic summer of fun activities!

Where did the school year go? This has been a great fourth-grade year! The students have learned how to multiply multiple digit numbers, divide with remainders and decimals, all about area, perimeter, volume, and so much more. They have read some interesting books and completed two book reports. The mission research paper and the state report were fourth grade’s big writing projects. The students also made a model, real or computerized, of the mission about which they wrote. Grammar and writing skills have improved so much! The students have learned a great deal and are ready to embark on their journey into Junior High. The highlights of 4th grade were all of our amazing field trips. The students especially liked going to Lazy W Ranch and spending the day reliving California history and learning about coastal plant and animal life at Crystal Cove. I know the fourth graders will be successful in the fifth grade and throughout life. Have a great summer, and I will see everyone next year.

Happy May Carden Families!! We have been super busy this last month getting ready for school to come to a close for the year. We started out this month with Standardized Testing, which ran smoothly. Teacher Appreciation week was a lot of fun! Thank you again for all the cards, notes, and gifts. The parent support here is simply outstanding and I really appreciate you all! In 5th grade Science, we studied matter, atoms, and elements. In 6th grade Science, we studied ecosystems and the intricate web of organisms that live in each of them. In 7th grade Science we finished our Optics and the Eye unit. In all grades for Math, we spent much of May in review, for both Testing and Finals. I’m proud of how much the students were able to retain from the whole year. They went into the Finals with confidence! This has been an amazing year here at Carden! The kids have really grown. I am looking forward to seeing you over the summer and next year.

First and foremost I would like to thank every one of you for the fabulous gifts I received for Teacher’s Appreciation Week. It was heartfelt and I want you all to know how moved I was. With the end of the school year upon us, I want to take a moment and let you know your children excelled in Spanish class. We travelled to the Latin world together, experiencing its sights and sounds. For many, I think this was the favorite part of the class, with its splashes of color, music, and even food. For others, our work on understanding parts of the speech by developing a language of our own seemed to resonate. It can be a powerful exercise and it is one I hope some of the children continue to dabble with and return to as the years go by. No matter what the children took away from the class, please encourage them to keep developing their vocabulary and exploring the diversity of the Latin world. I wish you all a fun-filled summer!

It is hard to believe this school year is ending. I had such an amazing year teaching language arts and drama to the junior high. The children are so much fun to work with and I always looked forward to coming to school each morning. I will miss them over summer vacation, but I am already looking forward to and planning for the next year. The junior high drama class put on another fabulous Broadway show. I am so proud of the elementary school girls and the junior high students. They shined on stage and they all did a spectacular job. They worked hard and put all their hearts and souls into it, and they gave everyone a great performance. Thank you, junior high, for putting on such a great show. Enjoy your summer vacation everyone. Have fun and I will see you in the fall!

It has been a wonderful and exciting year this school year! The highlights of this year’s music program are the recital of my private students in piano and voice, the making of musical instruments out of different materials, and playing of the recorder. The most exciting part of the school year is the preparation for our coming Spring Program, which will be held on June 7th at 8:45 a.m. The students are working hard rehearsing the songs about “Friendship”. I would like to share with you a beautiful quote about friendship that I learned while attending a music conference: “A friend is not an object to be used.....but a subject to be cherished.” Wishing you all a memorable and safe summer vacation!
