All Change at ChamberDorset Business, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is to be officially known as the ‘Dorset Chamber of Commerce & Industry’ following a strategic review.

It was in 2004 that the name ‘Dorset Business’ was adopted by the then Dorset Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The incorporation of the word ‘business’ into the brand name, at that time, was designed to ensure the chamber became recognised for its core commercial interests, that of supporting businesses in the region.

Speaking at the Chamber’s AGM, in-coming President Kathy Tilbury said, ‘Following the rebranding, the Dorset Chamber of Commerce & Industry has embarked upon a major growth strategy. To achieve our objectives in these continuing difficult economic and commercial times, providing our members with comprehensive business support remains our upmost priority. We look forward to playing a significant part in our members’ success.’

Building a Strong Team with Dovetail RecruitmentDovetail Recruitment is celebrating its second anniversary. Since opening in August 2008, Managing Director Liz Davies has seen the business go from strength to strength even through the tough times of recession. Dovetail Recruitment specialises in permanent recruitment covering the commercial, financial and technical sectors from office juniors to senior management.

During her 20 year career in recruitment Liz has built long and established relationships with clients in the Dorset area; many of whom have helped and supported her in the development of Dovetail.

Liz has an excellent, long standing relationship with Mike Boyd, Westover Group Director. On Mike’s behalf, Liz has filled a number of newly formed roles and vacant posts – spanning reception, service desk and sales admin – at both Westover Nissan and Toyota. Both operations have increased their staff over the past five years as the business has continued to expand, enjoying their best year to date in 2009.

‘Having the right team is critical to our success,’ says Mike. ‘We’re less concerned about people’s previous experience (because we offer plenty of on-the-job training) and more interested in finding people with a sunny personality and a ‘can-do’ attitude. Our priority is to deliver first-class customer service and that’s much easier to achieve with a strong and personable team in place. Liz understands our needs and has helped us build that really strong team.’

Ward Goodman and Humphries Kirk Battle it Out

Ward Goodman Chartered Accountants took on Humphries Kirk Solicitors in their annual ‘Ashes’ Cricket match held recently at Colehill Cricket Club. The ‘Ashes’ match, now in its fifth year is a result of the strong relationship and financial services joint venture that the organisations have shared since 2006.

The positive relationship was left back at the office, as Humphries Kirk looked to win the cup for the fifth time since the competition began. However, it was evident from the outset that Ward Goodman had a point to prove and a desire to erase the hurt of previous years.

This hunger and desire showed by the Ward Goodman team resulted in them cruising to victory with four wickets to spare, meaning captain Gareth Simon was finally able to lift the trophy that had eluded him for so many years.

Talking afterwards about the victory captain Gareth Simon, Ward Goodman Financial Services Manager said, ‘It’s nice to have a strong working relationship with another firm, but it’s even better to have finally beaten them. The team gave their all tonight and we go home with the bragging rights!’

New venture for childrenissues in local courts

Experience has shown that when couples agree their childcare arrangementsboth parents stick to the agreement more readily than arrangements imposedby the Court. This has been recognised by the Judiciary setting up amediation pilot scheme in local family courts. Mediators from various firmsform a panel, of which Laceys Mediation are administrators. A mediatorcontacts the parties prior to the first hearing to see if they will mediate.

Mediation looks at disputes in a problem solving way, addressingunderlying problems so that parents can move forward co-operatively inthe best interest of their children. Detailed parenting plans can be agreed, setting out ground rules for every eventuality, or mediation can be simplyto deal with a specific matter such as overnight stays or an annual holidaythat neither can agree. Mediators can see children as part of the processso their wishes and feelings can be taken into account.

It has been the situation for some time that all parties seeking publicfunding [legal aid] have been required to consider mediation before Courtproceedings. Its success has led to this new initiative where all thosemaking an application in Bournemouth Courts are being given a verystrong message – mediate first!

Mediate before making an application and save yourself the Court fee!!

Contact Laceys Mediation on 01202 755900 or visit our website:www.laceysmediation.co.uk. We can arrange a free half-hour chat witha mediator who can explain the process in detail without any obligation totake things further. Please call.

The Equality Act 2010The new Equality Act harmonises and replaces previous legislation including the Race Relations Act 1976 and Disability Discrimination Act 1995 with a view to tackling discrimination and inequality.

Most provisions of the act will come into force on 1st October 2010 and will cover the same groups as are protected by existing legislation being age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation and these will be known as ‘protected characteristics’. The act will include provisions to:b Extend the scope for employers to take positive action if it is

thought the employees or job applicants who share a particular protected characteristic suffer a disadvantage connected to that characteristic or if their participation in an activity is disproportionately low.

b Extend the power of tribunals to make recommendation that an organisation takes steps to eliminate or reduce the effect of discrimination.

b Make it unlawful for an employer to prevent or restrict employees from having a discussion to establish differences in pay exist that are related to protected characteristics. Consequently secrecy clauses may become unenforceable.

b Limit pre-employment health related checks and circumstances in which an employer may ask health related questions of a job applicant.

The provisions are complex and employers should seek advice. The act will also extend protection to characteristics that were not previously covered and many employers should review and revise their policies and practices. For further advice on employment matters contact Graham Evans at Dibbens 01202 882456.

Advertising Agency ExpandsThe Bournemouth-based advertising agency, The Consultancy, is expanding. After ten successful years working with local and national clients, the agency is now opening a second office to cover clients across the south west and west of England plus the midlands.

The Consultancy is now joined by two additional media specialists. Nigel Reeve brings thirty five years media experience in press, radio, magazines, local TV, internet marketing and websites. He was one of the team behind the launch of Classic FM, the hugely successful national commercial radio station and whilst there launched the Classic FM Magazine and CD brand. He is also an established sales trainer with over 30 year’s sales training experience. Lindsay Jones started her career in the retail world before moving into media sales, dealing on a daily basis with the major London advertising agencies. Recently she has been dealing with national media sales across the South West of England where she gained experience in magazine, radio and the direct mail advertising.

Lawrence Williams, Managing Director of The Consultancy said, ‘We have always been proud of our business which has remained profitable even during recent times. Our policy has been to work with our clients constantly looking at ways for them to reach more potential customers while at the same time tightly controlling advertising budgets. We are delighted to have two such experienced professionals working with us to take The Consultancy forward.’

Company Owners Still Seeing the Bright Side

Despite renewed speculation about a possible ‘double dip’ recession, business people across Dorset remain upbeat about their prospects, a survey by Business Link reveals.

Asked how they felt about the outlook for their businesses in the next 12 months, 33% of company

owners classified themselves as extremely optimistic. A further 59% were ‘reasonably optimistic’. Only 8% described themselves as pessimistic about the year ahead.

Ian Girling, Operations Manager for Business Link in Dorset, said, ‘Whilst we are in recovery, the current economic climate is still very fragile and will continue to be so as we see public sector spending cuts start to hit.

‘It’s encouraging to see how the business community feel. We believe a positive attitude in business is essential.’

The survey was conducted at a Blandford meeting of members of the Rural Dorset Business Clubs run by Business Link.

One hot topic for discussion at the event was the government’s recent announcement of its intention to scrap regional Business Link operations, with the potential loss of their adviser service, networking events and the rural business clubs themselves.

The Business and Enterprise Minister, Mark Prisk, has said that the regional Business Link services are to end, and be replaced by a national online service and call centre. No firm timescale has yet been set for the changes.

Asked at the Blandford event how relevant Business Link and the rural clubs had been in supporting their businesses through recession, 18% classified the assistance as vital, and a further 50% replied important.

Bag a bargainThe difficult times of the last couple of years haveprovided opportunities for entrepreneurs with cashavailable for investment to bag a bargain by purchasinga business out of insolvency from an administrator.

Insolvency practitioners are usually adverse to therisks of trading. Banks are increasingly unwilling toprovide working capital to administrators to trade abusiness in administration and many contracts withcustomers will be automatically determined on aformal insolvency. Even where trading is possible, a

delay in achieving a sale will increase costs and may adversely affect the goingconcern value of the business. Hence the rise in recent years of the ‘pre-pack’business sale where the transaction is agreed in principle prior to theadministrator’s appointment and then effected by the administratorimmediately after appointment.

Whether the sale is a pre-pack or a traditional post appointment going concernsale, the pressure will be on the purchaser to complete the deal quickly. ‘Caveatemptor’ (buyer beware) is never more relevant than when buying from anadministrator who will rarely provide any warranties or indemnities in connectionwith the sale. In a rush to get the deal done, a purchaser runs the risk of failing toundertake adequate due diligence on the target.

When negotiating with an administrator, it may be helpful to obtain your ownadvice from an insolvency practitioner who can get ‘under the skin’ of the vendorand provide an insight into the key issues which will drive the timing andconditions of any sale and potentially the consideration which will need to bepaid to acquire the business and assets.

A purchaser will, as a minimum, need to understand the following:

The real reasons for the failure of the business The impact the insolvency will have on the key customer and supplier

relationships Who are the key employees essential to the future success of the business The impact of the TUPE regulations on future employment costs The risks that the vendor will not have proper title to the assets it is

purporting to sell The time, effort and costs needed to gain control and integrate the business

after acquisition

As always, I will be happy to assist you if you are considering the purchase of abusiness in a distressed state.

Act Now to Maximise Tax ReliefIn July’ second Budget it was announced that tax relief for most expenditure on plant and machinery is to be reduced by 20% from April 2012. At the same time the Annual Investment Allowance for such expenditure is being cut from £100,000 to £25,000.

Businesses should consider planning new expenditure on plant and machinery before April 2012 in order to benefit from current tax relief rates.

It is also worthwhile reviewing whether past expenditure has been fully claimed, especially expenditure on fixtures in buildings such as lifts, electrical installations and heating. Such Expenditure is often overlooked for tax relief, not just in newly constructed buildings but particularly when a business buys a second hand building.

Growth and Investment at InspireInspire Professional Services is celebrating another successful year which has seen growth across the business in the year to June 2010. Financially in this period the turnover for the business has increased by 20% but those figures are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this expanding local firm.

Following on from the recruitment of Andrew Singleton as Associate Director in May, Inspire has also recruited Chesney Archer as an employment taxes specialist, Adam Felgate as an Assistant Manager to the accounts and audit team and Rachel Parker as an Accounts Trainee.

This growth in the team has seen the need for office expansion and Inspire has therefore now leased additional space in its Poole office which also provides space for further expansion. This firm base, coupled with the office in Christchurch, shows Inspire’s commitment to the conurbation and to servicing clients in the region.

Further investment is also being made to ensure that the business operates efficiently across the two locations and this includes the investment in new information technology and new accounting and tax software.

Warren Munson, Managing Director adds, ‘At a time when the pressures for those in business and in particular in the professions are significant I am extremely proud that due to our philosophy, the teams expertise and our collective endeavour we have increased turnover, increased the services offered to our clients, taken on many new clients and also made great strides towards our long term strategic goals. This recent reinvestment in the business reflects our confidence that we will continue to grow and our belief that the south coast is a great place to do business!’

Take Control - Cash is King!Controlling your cash-flow is of

paramount importance; after all, it is the life-blood of your business.

Now is an excellent time to review your credit control procedures.

If you find you are being paid consistently late, legislation was introduced to try and protect you from this situation. The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 and was introduced in 2002.

The legal status of the business you are seeking to claim interest from is irrelevant. Late payment interest can be claimed except in the case of personal debt.

You can have the best credit control procedures available; however, often the debtor will only pay up when threatened with action.

It pays to seek professional advice at the point of non payment. Contact from a third party such as Acquit will grab your client’s attention. A third party can assist you in maintaining a good relationship with your client who should understand that in these tough times cash is king and we all deserve to be paid on time!

Charity Trustees Warned as Serious Incidents SurgeToo many business owners are becoming trustees of charities without understanding the legal implications, according to finance experts.

Charity trustees have a legal responsibility for the management and decision making of a charity. Legislation imposes obligations upon trustees, highlighting the trend towards greater responsibility and accountability. Trustees are responsible for what they themselves do and don’t do but may also be held liable for the actions of others.

The issue is being highlighted as the number of serious incidents reported to the Charity Commission rose by more than 75% in 2009/10.

There are more than a million charity trustees in the UK but as few as one in four charities runs induction training.

New Medical iPhone App Reaches Top Spot on iTunes

Stereoscopic Optical Systems has developed a new 3D camera assembly for use in medical surgery, professional film-making, TV production and home camcorders. The system has already been used successfully with a camcorder to produce home movies that were shown on a 3D screen within minutes.

Instead of using two electronically- or mechanically-linked cameras and flickering two sets of images, the company says its new JC3D system shows images to both eyes at the same time by incorporating two views from adjacent lenses that are manipulated into a single camera by passive optics.

Conventional 3D imaging often involves co-ordinated twin camera arrangements, twin projectors, or very complex methods of displaying stereoscopic images to each eye in turn, or showing left and right eye images alternately to the same camera.

In the consumer sector, health concerns have been raised by industry leaders in stereoscopic entertainment over the way 3D TV and films are viewed because of their flicker effect. People with epilepsy, pregnant women, the elderly, children and those suffering from serious medical conditions are among a wide range of people said to be at risk.

An innovative free eye test for the Apple iPhone created by a Bournemouth company has become a top iTunes download within days of release. Digital web agency 3 Sided Cube was commissioned by optical giants Essilor to create a basic eye test ‘app’ for the device, which users download to their

phone to check the quality of their eyesight and if necessary recommends they get a proper eye test with a qualified optometrist.

The eye test application is available free of charge from the iTunes store by searching for ‘Vision Test’.

The support of local mobile working specialists Grapevine is helping one of its customers to maintain links with a global agent and distributor network.

CI Electronics in Salisbury manufactures precision instruments and software systems for use in quality assurance and research applications and is utilising remote e-mail and internet access productively.

Grapevine’s supplier relationship with CI Electronics is now over three years old. The initial requirements of extending the reach of mobile workers and cost-effective and seamless communications with their overseas contacts remain. This now sees CI Electronics utilise HTC mobile devices with the Android operating system along with Vodafone Mobile Broadband.

Adrian Roberts of CI Electronics explains, ‘Our global reach means that it is imperative that staff can be in touch with our UK office and contacts in different countries with the minimum of fuss. Mobile e-mail is hugely valuable here.’ Mr. Roberts goes on to add that mobile broadband has also opened up some traditional communications ‘black spots’ around the world and that ‘we are now in a much better position to control and anticipate costs for overseas mobile data usage.’

Dorset technology start-up PredictiveIntent is bucking economic trends through capitalising from the global shift that retailers are making towards e-commerce. Tens of thousands of retailers around the globe either have or are launching online and mobile stores. Most of these retailers only dream of having the Amazon style functionality which enables each and every shopper to view products which are relevant to them.

PredictiveIntent is fast becoming a leading global supplier of best of breed ‘behavioural merchandising’ software for digital retailers. With some customers experiencing nearly 50% of all sales being assisted by PredictiveIntent, the company has established a global network

of specialist resellers and is working with FTSE listed retailers to convert more visitors to buyers.

Based at the Enterprise Pavilion in Poole, PredictiveIntent raised finance during the recent recession, creating new jobs and will continue to recruit local e-commerce web specialists as the company expands.

Live flight data is already available through the website, but passengers or visitors can

also get live flight data via a ‘tweet’ or message.

The innovative free service - which has been cleverly coined ‘Tweepartures’ - allows followers to simply send @Bmouth_Airport a direct message with the word FLIGHT followed by their flight number. They will then be sent an immediate update every time the status of their flight changes.

The big question with mobile information is always around security. Certain desktop virtualisation technologies such as Citrix Xendesktop and XenApp, keep corporate data safe and secure on your company network not on the device. So if the device gets lost there is no data saved on it.

And finally, what makes Citrix so useable is the fact that it looks and feels like an iTunes storefront, which means user training is almost zero –

Mobilising the Enterprise Application

Paul Cashmore

The mobile application market is huge and between Apple, Google and RIM there are millions of apps available to download onto smartphones. This is the battleground of the future – putting valuable applications onto mobile devices.

As smartphones get more powerful and more useable for increased numbers of tasks and with 4G mobile services soon to be on the horizon, the application enabled smartphone or iPad will replace a portion of the laptop market. For users that don’t need the full computing flexibility of the laptop a cheaper smartphone with many of the functions will be the obvious answer.

However, how do you translate this consumer market hunger for mobile applications to the business market? How do you get your enterprise applications and

productivity applications onto smartphones and tablets, such as the iPad, so they are useable and without re-writing code?

The answer already exists with certain desktop virtualisation technologies which can present employee’s applications and desktops onto iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android and Windows Mobile devices with

virtualisation technologies offering lower total costs, greater management of software and tighter security, it’s an offer that more businesses are going to find hard to refuse.

A Fairer Future By Susie Smith, Dickinson Manser Solicitors

The Equality Act 2010 received royal assent in April with a view to the majority of its provisions coming in to force this October and the new coalition government has now confirmed that it still intends this to be the case. The act will replace most of the existing discrimination legislation so as to create a more unified approach and so whilst it retains much of the existing law it does make various

significant changes. Below you will find a few examples of key changes which will affect certain businesses.

Businesses Supplying Goods or Services:b The act will prohibit discrimination, harassment and victimisation

related to disability, age (for over 18s), gender reassignment, pregnancy, race, religion, belief, sex and sexual orientation.

b This prohibition will include:- • refusing to provide services, • providing a different quality of service, and • providing services on different terms.

Dealing with Tenants that Don’t Pay RentDuring the last two years of economic difficulty, many commercial landlords have had difficulty with tenants who have been unable to pay their rent. Carl Geary, Property Litigation Solicitor at Frettens Solicitors in Christchurch, explains the options available to landlords in this position:b Distress is where the landlord seizes goods owned by the tenant

as security for arrears of rent. Used correctly, it is an effective and quick remedy for recovering unpaid rents where the landlord does not want to bring the lease to an end.

b Forfeiture is the termination of a lease by the landlord prior to expiry of the agreed term on the grounds that the tenant has breached some term of the lease.

Carl advises commercial landlords of the importance of acting quickly and decisively when faced with a tenant who has not paid their rent, or a tenant that breaches one of the covenants within a lease. He comments, ‘It is not an automatic right to forfeit a lease, so a landlord must ensure the lease specifically states the grounds for forfeiture. A landlord must also serve a formal demand for rent prior to forfeiture and any action contrary to this, such as acceptance of rent, may lead to the loss of this right. It is essential to ensure leases are watertight and drafted by experienced commercial specialists. At Frettens we are prepared to review your commercial lease at no charge and advise you of any amendments which could be beneficial to your position.’

sexual orientation against tenants, occupiers, potential tenants or purchasers.

b The act also provides for written agreements to be made between landlord and disabled tenants where reasonable adjustments are to be made to common parts to avoid or reduce any disadvantage faced by a disabled tenant.

Employers:b The act will allow employers to choose between two equally

qualified candidates by selecting one from an under-represented minority and prevent employers asking pre-employment health questions save in limited circumstances.

b In some cases the act will make contractual prohibitions on employees discussing their salaries unenforceable in relation to any discussions aimed at establishing whether there is pay discrimination.

Could Company Drivers be Heading for a Breakdown?

Motorists need to factor in more than sun cream as driving on the continent could cost millions of drivers more than they had bargained for due to confusion about where the responsibility lies for their breakdown and foreign insurance cover.

Company vehicles tend to come with breakdown cover, but only for UK roads, additional cover is required before heading to the ferry port, says Masterlease which advises drivers to check with their fleet managers, breakdown providers and insurance companies.

The number of British drivers taking their car to Europe on holiday has doubled in the last 10 years to approximately 3.5 million and around a quarter of drivers who take their car abroad could experience a breakdown. A significant number of these are company car drivers who are often tempted to jump into their vehicle without thinking about what could happen if they broke down or had an accident abroad.

Many drivers fail to take out European breakdown cover for their company car drivers, because they are unaware of the fact that it could cost between £600 and £1,000 to have one vehicle repatriated.

Equally, insurance has to be checked to make sure they are legal to drive on European roads.

Anthony Dowdall, Head of Operations at Masterlease, says, ‘Often, because they don’t own the car, company car drivers assume that their company car warranty and breakdown cover will assist them in Europe. However, even if the business feels it is the driver’s responsibility to

make sure they have the right cover; the car is the company’s property and therefore the company’s responsibility.’

‘Fleet managers need to get this message across before people go away for the summer or risk starting the autumn with hefty bills to pay. Roadside assistance on the continent can cost over €100 and bringing home a stranded vehicle can cost much more. As well as ensuring drivers have adequate insurance and breakdown cover, businesses should have a policy in place for driving overseas and make sure drivers have information about what to do if they break down or have an accident abroad. Drivers should also be aware of which compulsory documents and equipment must be carried when driving on the continent,’ adds Dowdall.

The 30 buses on Wilts & Dorset’s successful ‘more’ service between Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Castlepoint are receiving a £100,000 facelift. A new livery is being introduced to celebrate 100% passenger growth since the service was launched in December 2004 following a £4m investment.

Company drivers heading for sunnier climes for holidays need to make sure they are fully covered – and not just in terms of sun protection, warns fleet company Masterlease.

School of Tourism Helps Local Rare Breeds FarmA government-funded partnership has been set up between Bournemouth University (BU) and Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm Park to help drive business growth and increase visitor numbers to this local tourist attraction.

Academics from the School of Tourism, one of the UK’s leading centres for tourism research and enterprise, will work with the Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm Park on a new shortened Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) initiative to provide and implement specific business developments and strategies to improve the overall performance of the farm.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is a UK-wide programme enabling businesses to improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance. A KTP achieves this through the forming of a partnership between an organisation and academic institution.

This is the first time BU has worked with a local organisation on a short term KTP programme, which usually run from 18 to 36 months. A relaxation of the funding rules has allowed BU academics to work with local organisations on a 40-week programme.

Pride in Bournemouth 2011Pride in Bournemouth is a vibrant and exciting public art event to be staged in the summer of 2011 that will see the crème of the areas artist create beautiful, individually crafted lion sculptures that will animate the streets and public spaces of Bournemouth. It is based on a highly successful model that will bring the arts and business communities together for the benefit of the town.

This world-class event will attract tourists to Bournemouth as well as encourage residents to see their town afresh, in effect becoming ‘tourists in their own town’. It will aim to achieve a significant economic, social and cultural impact through the engagement of Bournemouth’s public and private sectors together with the creative and local communities while highlighting the town on the national and international stage. Ultimately, it is hoped that Pride in Bournemouth will also raise significant funds for charity when the lions take centre stage in a charity auction, while at the same time leaving behind the legacy of a newly invigorated arts scene.

Anyone who wants to know more about the sponsorship benefits of being part of the pride should contact Charlie Langhorne on 07970 974511.

HM Treasury has launched a consultation to align the UK with European law regarding Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHLs) that may leave owners facing higher taxes and may prevent them from offsetting their losses against personal income. In addition, to qualify as a FHL, the property must be available and let for a greater proportion of the year.

Under current rules, homeowners must make their FHLs available to let for at least 140 days a year and the property actually let for 70 days as a minimum. However, the proposals are for the threshold to increase to 210 and 105 days respectively.

The 50% increase in letting periods will inevitably drive some owners to spend more on their property to ensure they maintain or grow their bookings. Alun Oliver, Managing Director of

property taxation specialists, E3 Consulting said ‘The consultation makes it imperative for all FHL owners to carefully consider the use of their properties and when purchasing or refurbishing, they optimise the tax allowances available to them before April

2011. A recent E3 client who acquired a FHL for £465,000 generated a tax rebate of £9,600 with further savings up to £48,000 over time.’

Delivering customer satisfaction....

Colourful Deliveries go with FedExFor nearly 25 years Wyvern Cargo provided dependable express parcel services for firms in Dorset and West Hampshire as a franchisee under the ANC Express banner. Its services acquired a global dimension when ANC Express became part of the American giant FedEx Corporation four years ago, being renamed FedEx UK. Today the FedEx franchise is run as a separate business by Poole Express Ltd, Wyvern Cargo’s sister company.

‘Growth snowballed over the years. Our latest annual turnover exceeds £6m and we continually attract new customers,’ says Colin Hawkins who, as Express Service Director, controls the 43 delivery vans which cover the area, overseeing a throughput of more than two million parcels a year. Colin adds, ‘The whole operation must run like clockwork because customers’ deliveries are often time-sensitive. We’re proud of our band of drivers who do a superb job in every sort of weather.’

One customer which has grown in parallel with the business is Farrow & Ball, the renowned Wimborne Paint and Wallpaper Manufacturer whose world-wide reputation has earned it many global accolades including in 2004 the Queen’s Award for Export and in 2005 the Dorset Business of the Year Award. Using top quality and environmentally friendly materials, Farrow & Ball’s colourful products grace the walls

of some of the most beautiful homes across the world.

John Hackett, Group Operations Director at Farrow & Ball, says that they send out over 400 boxed orders every day, adding, ‘As a global premium brand our customers rightly expect a top quality delivery service to match the quality of the products they have purchased. Fed-Ex continue to deliver this service and sustain our reputation for speed and reliability.’

Rising to the Challenge

Cranleigh Freight Services already operates a mixed fleet of over 40 trailers, but as the levels of air cargo business the company handles increases it has invested in nine new curtainsider trailers from Schmitz Cargobull. The new trailers have been adapted so they can handle both standard pallets and airfreight making them incredibly versatile.

RH Recruitment Drive in Motion

Following RH Freight’s (RH) recent announcement about its ambitious ‘Million Pound Branch Project’, the operator has appointed three new freight account mangers at its Bournemouth branch.

This ‘Million Pound Branch Project’ has been designed to enable RH to maximise potential at every one of its 14 local sales offices including Bournemouth.

To meet these growth targets RH needs to increase its number of freight account managers to 140 (from its current level of 100) over the next two years. The newly appointed freight account managers were recently brought together from all over the country to RH’s Nottingham HQ.

FTA’s Transport Hub: Putting Transport at the Heart of Conference SeasonTransport organisations will be afforded a louder voice and a more efficient way of getting their messages across to senior politicians at this year’s political party conferences with the launch of the Transport Hub, which is project managed by theFreight Transport Association (FTA).

The Transport Hub will enable its members to articulate their messages to maximum effect while avoiding unwanted timetable clashes in what is set to be a hectic conference season.

Michael Webb, FTA’s Public Affairs Manager, said, ‘The recent shift in our political landscape means it is crucial that transport organisations come together to remind politicians of the importance of what we do. Now is the time for the transport community to demonstrate its importance to the country’s economic recovery, regardless of modal or policy interests.

‘Ahead of the spending review, everyone will be shouting to protect their piece of the pie. The important economic message of transport companies must get through, and Transport Hub can make this happen.’

Ultrasonic Antifouling – the world’s leading electronic antifouling brand – has been nominated for an environmental award ahead of the Southampton Boat Show.

Highly respected magazine Practical Boat Owner has listed the revolutionary and eco-friendly Ultrasonic Antifouling system in the Best Product category of its PBO Green Awards. The award nomination for ‘marine products that promote sustainable boating’ highlights Ultrasonic Antifouling’s role in providing chemical-free antifouling for boats all over the world.

Ultrasonic Antifouling uses high frequency, low power sound waves to keep boat hulls clear of algae and barnacles. It is harmless to marine life and helps boat owners to significantly cut fuel bills and maintain hull speeds all season long.

Ultrasonic Antifouling technology will be demonstrated at the show on Calypso, a new greener version of the iconic Contessa 32 synonymous with legendary yachtsman Jeremy Rogers MBE. Mr Rogers and his son Kit have fitted out Calypso with Ultrasonic Antifouling, a hybrid engine, solar panels, wind turbines, fuel cell technology plus a whole range of other energy-efficient products.

Reigning Contessa 32 champion Jeremy Rogers is the only person ever to have won the coveted Gold Roman Bowl in The Round-The-Island Race three times in the same boat. He was Yachtsman of the Year in 1974 and received his MBE for services to yachting.

Calypso will be moored at berth number M502, on display in association with The Green Blue, an RYA/BMF initiative to improve environmental awareness among boating enthusiasts.

On 9th August the BBC’s Panorama programme,

of the same title, aired a damning report on their findings concerning Will writing companies. This follows on from equally damning reports published in October 2009 by the Law Society of England & Wales and a “Watchdog” style enquiry into the actions of a Will writer against a member of the public aired by a Welsh consumer programme.

It was found that the service provided by these individuals and companies was untruthful, expensive, shoddy and pointless. Furthermore they found that the public is being exposed to unregulated, unqualified and uninsured Will writers.

You, yourself, may well have been approached by a Will writer with promises of cheap Wills and cheap advice together with adverse remarks about solicitors and their charges. By all means listen but beware of the catches.

In the current economic climate, it is understandable

A recent claim from a senior Scotland Yard Officer reported that Police are failing to bring criminals to justice despite CCTV evidenceAlthough 1,000 crimes were solved in 2008/9 using CCTV images, a recent internal report commented that police officers are failing to make the most of potentially vital evidence.

Writing in an internal report in August last year, DCI Mick Neville said; “People have high expectations if they become a victim of crime especially if the incident is recorded on CCTV”.

Although a Home Office report found camera schemes have a ‘’modest impact’’ on reducing crime; researchers have found cameras were ef fec t ive in preventing vehicle thefts and vandalism in car parks.

Efforts continue to be made to improve the effectiveness of CCTV as both a deterrent and to make the investigation of CCTV evidence following a crime as professional as fingerprints and DNA.

Stuart Fisher, Wessex Fire and Security Director commented, “It is encouraging that the Police are looking to improve convictions with CC T V evidence. CC T V usage remains at the forefront of protecting commercial property from burglary with many attempts thwarted once a burglar realizes they will be captured on film.”

One in three companies in the south west have seen performance lifted by sheer

hard work, according to new research among the region’s leading managing directors and business owners.

The survey of more than 60 managing directors of the region’s top performing businesses was conducted by leading business forum Beacon South West. Findings show a third of these managing directors (32%) say profits are actually up on the previous year, and fewer firms are reporting tough trading conditions – a figure down from 16% to 11% since the start of 2010.

In addition, the survey shows an increase from 30% to 37% since January in the number of firms feeling ‘bullish’ about their business in the coming months, but do feel that it is the actions of their competitors such as price cutting, which is keeping 63% of the region’s firms on their toes. Fluctuating exchange rates are also having an impact on a further 50% of businesses. Overall, this research reflects optimism for growth and recovery among enterprises in the south west as we move into the second half of the year.

Sue Baker, Project Director for Beacon South West, said, ‘Whilst south west businesses appear to be planning optimistic strategies for growth in 2010, they are still keeping their feet firmly on the ground and maintaining leaner and more efficient enterprises to ensure they will be able to respond to any economic threats.’

However, not all the businesses surveyed are seeing the same rate of recovery. Fewer firms (8%, down from 12% in January), are managing to be more lean and more efficient, and an increased cost of materials is still affecting 44%. In fact, the number of firms that say trading is so difficult they are in cost-cutting mode has actually increased from 1% to 2%.

Recent events such as the Icelandic volcano eruption and the General Election impacted on around half (49%), of firms in the region.

Beacon South West is a proactive forum for high growth businesses in the south west which enables cross-sector collaboration and peer learning among senior execs of inspiring firms, awarded Beacon status for best practice and enterprise. Funded by the South West Regional Development Agency

High Growth Firms in the South West are Working their Way to Recovery

(SWRDA), there are over 230 dynamic Beacon-accredited companies, all of which have gone through a rigorous validation process.

Sue Baker added, ‘The premise of Beacon South West is to allow the region’s leading directors to promote good business practice and to share and learn from business experience. This has proved to be particularly valuable in a changing economic climate. The monthly Beacon ‘Boardroom’ meetings are an opportunity for us to gather the opinions of these leaders and use them as a barometer for the rest of the region’s firms.’

This Beacon South West economic intelligence survey is based on anonymous feedback captured at monthly boardrooms between April and June. This is tracked and compared with previous surveys. The overriding themes of Q2’s boardroom intelligence indicated:b Companies are actively taking on graduates

bringing them up through company ranks as in many cases, the quality of senior sales staff in the job market is not satisfactory

b In addition to the sales market, there is also a skills shortage in the engineering sector where firms are turning to head-hunters to find the best people for their business

b Many firms are focusing on developing people skills as an investment in future growth

b For some, the effects of the public sector cuts are yet to be felt but they are optimistic for the future

b Manufacturers are experiencing slow domestic growth while US and European trading is increasing, and although raw materials are reported to be expensive, prices in general are coming down

Sue Baker concluded, ‘For many firms in the region, the last few years have been tough but the feedback from Beacon companies is that trading conditions are feeling more stable but still a little unpredictable. This feedback is valuable intelligence for the region’s business decision makers, and we are proud that Beacon firms contribute to the south west economy, either individually or through building alliances. By being so willing to share their strategies and knowledge about the current landscape, they are an example of best practice and inspiration for other ambitious businesses.’

Greg Taylor, Head of Business Support at the South West RDA, said, ‘While no business can afford to be complacent, these figures are heartening in the context of a tumultuous couple of years. Any growth we see is likely to be weak, so it’s good to see that some of our best and brightest companies are taking that opportunity to invest in people skills and new blood. Where Beacon companies lead, we hope others will follow.

Felicity Hedger

Felicity Hedger, Senior Partner of Humphries Kirk LLP, warns of the potential danger of unregulated, unqualified and uninsured Will writing services.

that we should try and keep our expenditure to a minimum and shop around. But, beware of false economies. It will be too late when your family have to pick up the costs of putting things right.

As a Solicitor I am regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. I am a Trust and Estate Practitioner and a Member of Solicitors For The Elderly. I specialise in Wills, Probate, Trusts and the Court of Protection and so am very aware of the quantity and quality of advice needed when preparing Wills. My advice will often include aspects of income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax and trust law, when relevant. My qualifications and experience tell me when that advice is necessary. Can the same be said for Will writers?

As a Member of Solicitors For The Elderly, I am in constant contact with fellow members across the country swapping horror stories about Will writers.

‘That’s just solicitors moaning about competition’ I hear you say. Not so. I am more than happy for you to compare my services against Will writers, just confirm that what they tell you is true.

Here are some factual stories relayed to members of Solicitors For The Elderly by their clients:

1Will offered for £49 but an upfront storage

fee of £600 and further fees on retrieving the Will on death – My fee for a straightforward Will is £125 plus vat and free storage

2Solicitors must be instructed to deal with

estates and they charge 7% of the estate – Anyone can deal with the Estate and my fees are agreed with you beforehand and detailed – never at 7%, on average less than 2% or I can offer a fixed fee or hourly rate.

3A property trust can be prepared for £500

“saving care fees” – Sadly not true. Local Authorities successfully challenge these trusts – all you do is waste money in setting them up – by carefully wording Wills savings can be made.

An example of why statutory regulation of Will writers is needed concerns the Fellowship of Professional Will writers and Probate Practitioners. The FPWPP was created by a company called Estate Protection Services which prior to September 2008 traded

as Solicitors Probate Services (SPS). In June 2008 the Solicitors Regulation Authority banned SPS from Probate services and intervened in the practice of Stephen Share an SPS director.

In the High Court, July 2008, Justice Patten stated:

‘the business of SPS is simply a moneymaking exercise in which the clients’ interests are regarded as anything but paramount’, and that ‘the sales methods (of SPS) are calculated to prey on their (clients’) fears.’

Unregulated, Unqualified and Uninsured –v– Regulated, Qualified and Insured, the choice is simple.

Two Ringwood Rotarians were discussing the devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan on their way home from a club meeting and immediately decided to do something to help. By the next morning, after gaining permission to collect in the Furlong Centre, 15 Rotarians (almost half the membership) agreed to give time to the project. In a 4 hour period - less than 24 hours from when the idea was first formed - they collected over £940. With a small addition from the club’s treasurer this will fund two shelter boxes which will be used in the flood stricken area.

Each box contains a tent providing accommodation for 10 people, a heater and cooking equipment, tools for cutting and using timber together with water purification equipment, a powerful clockwork torch, mosquito nets and a waterproof poncho. It also includes 10 sleeping bags and thermal blankets to keep people warm and secure.

BCF had suspended its lunch club following the decline of the property sector in 2008 but now, with a much more positive outlook, the quarterly lunches are back.

The next BCF lunch club will be on Friday 24th September with further details available from [email protected]

Rotary Members in Action for Flood Victims Dorset Export Group LaunchesDorset businesses need to think about growth in the coming months and years. Because of this, Dorset County Council has supplied seed funding for a fresh, business focused group called The Dorset Export Group. With support of key agencies, this project is being driven by Major Events International – a company with a wealth of experience within international markets. The group’s core purpose is to introduce Dorset companies to international opportunities in order for them to do more business than in their current markets. The group will also actively stimulate investment into Dorset from overseas companies looking to partner with our businesses. The group will have its official launch the 5th October 2010. Attendees will include government trade ministers, business leaders and key decision makers within organisations and hopefully many representatives from local and nation media. A Hampshire-based entrepreneur with more than 30 years’ experience in corporate finance and directing companies is to chair one of the UK’s biggest regional business networks. Simon Greenly has been elected chairman of Hampshire Chamber, which represents 2,000 member firms employing 150,000 people across the county. He is already a director on the chamber board and has acted as a board advisor to FTSE 100 companies including Cable & Wireless, Shell and as an investor and director of plcs and many smaller businesses. Mr Greenly said, ‘Hampshire Chamber has been formed from the three leading Hampshire chambers to strengthen the voice of the local business community and enhance the prosperity of members across the county. The new Hampshire Chamber will provide leadership and business support, and enable members to connect with more people, locally, regionally or nationally.’ The new organisation provides members with products, services, events and networking opportunities from local offices in Southampton, Portsmouth, Fleet, Basingstoke and Winchester, but access and influence to more businesses regionally and nationally. For more information visit www.hampshirechamber.co.uk

AFC Business, the free business club organised by AFC Bournemouth, has gone from strength to strength since its launch in December last year, reflecting the vibrant business community in the region.

The club already has over 250 members ranging from blue chip companies to smaller local organisations. Members receive a number of benefits including discounted corporate packages at AFC Bournemouth, the chance to promote themselves to other business members and access to regular competitions and corporate events. These have included breakfast seminars and evening networking events, and the last event mixed business with football as members enjoyed a BBQ and watched the Cherries’ thrilling 3-3 draw against Derby County. Just as the football team has been promoted to League One, so too has AFC Business enjoyed a time of growth and development.

The next AFC Business event is a breakfast meeting on Wednesday 8th September in partnership with Jaluch, which will focus on achieving sales growth through leveraging the right business relationships. The breakfast will also see the launch of a charity partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

AFC Business is free to join and a downloadable membership form can be found at www.afcb.co.uk

How to Combine… …Food and Wine

For the most part, combining food and wine is about balance. There are, infact, very few perfect matches. However, Sancerre and goats cheese is a match that is considered to work in perfect harmony – but why?

The region of Sancerre has been producing wine for hundreds of years. The cool climate and stony soil, rich in marine fossils, creates the perfect environment for growing the sauvignon blanc grape. The village of Chavignol, tucked away in the

middle of Sancerre, has a reputation for producing a fine Sancerre with a smoky minerality. Chavignol is also famous for its crottin de chavignol (goats cheese) which it has been making since the 16th century. It was originally produced as a snack to eat during the grape harvest. Both the cheese and the wine in Chavignol have evolved over the years. But why do they work so well together? The answer is acidity.

To learn the principles of matching food and wine contact Anne on 0788 560 2526. Corporate or private courses can be tailored to suit your needs with as much practical application as you like!

Supply of Farmland Improved within the South West The latest RICS Rural Land Survey reveals demand for all types of farmland continues to rise across much of the UK, while the supply of land took a turn for the better in the south west.

Over the past six months 47% more chartered surveyors across the UK reported a rise rather than a fall in demand for commercial farmland. The south west saw a slight fall back in commercial demand with 52% reporting a rise in demand rather than a fall – down from 58%. While for residential farmland demand is improving, with 28% more surveyors in the south west reporting a rise rather than fall, up from 13% in the last half of 2009. This compares to 14% across the UK.

The supply of farmland to the market continued to decline across much of the UK, but improved within the south west. The net balance for availability of commercial farmland within the region improved from -46 to zero, while residential farmland saw the net balance improve from -38 to zero. Although land values remain high the survey results present a mixed picture. Farmland prices improved within the south west and arable land now stands at £14,827 per hectare (up from £13,591). The opinion based measure of bare land prices across the UK saw increases of 6% to £13,530.

Looking ahead, surveyors expect farmland prices to continue rising over the next 12 months due to the imbalance in supply and demand. However, it is the commercial farmland sector which can expect to see the sharpest price rises, with 52% of surveyors within the south west expecting prices to rise rather than fall.

In his new position, Michael will have responsibility for supervising the smooth running of forest operations. He will oversee timber harvesting contractors across the south east of England (including the New Forest, Dorset and Kent), ensuring machinery and staff adhere to legal requirements.

Internet Service Providers Accused of Letting Down Rural CommunitiesThe CLA, the rural economy people, claims that Ofcom’s report on broadband speeds vindicated the association’s long-held claim that consumers – particularly rural consumers - are being short-changed.

Dr Charles Trotman, CLA Head of Rural Business Development said, ‘Customers are not being giving the broadband speeds they are led to expect by the companies providing their internet services. Running a business in the countryside is tough enough without the commercial disadvantage of broadband speeds way below what was promised.’

Dr Trotman also flagged up the issue of surcharges made by internet service providers (ISPs) because of regular use of internet-player services to catch up on missed TV programmes.

He said, ‘Many people are unaware of the bandwidth limitations set by ISPs and how quickly they can be exceeded by internet-player usage. We are calling for greater clarity from ISPs to ensure customers are fully aware of possible additional charges.’

Dr Trotman added that there were many rural areas that could still not receive broadband, and that the CLA would continue to lobby government to facilitate broadband for all by 2012.

Full Steam Ahead at Dorset EventWith a showground of 600 acres The Great Dorset Steam Fair is recognised as one of Europe’s largest outdoor events. Last year saw over £16.3m spent within the show which takes place annually during the first week of September. This impressive rural event requires precision planning which starts immediately the previous show has ended.

Due to planning regulations, actual site preparations do not begin until only two weeks before the event commences, and there are just 10 days to clear the site afterwards and put it back to a working farm. Each year there are more than 300 paid staff and volunteers working during the five-day show period.

With 1,000 trade stands, 2,000 exhibitors and their families, together with campers on the public campsites it is estimated that the population living on site amounts to 25,000 people at any one time. The total number of people expected to see the show is in excess of 200,000.

One of the region’s leading business schools is offering a part-time course to help small and medium organisations boost their business strategies.

Bournemouth University’s Business School has launched the ‘20 ways to Improve Business Performance’ course to help businesses review and improve their business, pricing, HR and marketing strategies.

Heather Williams, Tax Director at chartered accountants Princecroft Willis in Poole and former Director of global cosmetics company Lush, will draw on her many years of experience in retail and manufacturing to deliver practical tuitions. She will be joined by Charlie Wilkinson, Head of Executive Business at the Business School, who will help Heather review business plans put together by students

‘It will be practical - each week attendees will be given a project tailored to their own business and will be set specific targets.’

The latest CIPD* employee outlook survey, published

June 2010, found that fewer than half of the 2,000 respondents felt either ‘fully’ or ‘fairly well’ informed about what was going on in their organisations.

Such findings reveal just how important it is to improve communications with staff as part of a business strategy.

It is important to communicate when times are hard… as well as celebrating successes.

Here are 6 top tips for communicating with your people:

1Have a shared purpose Creating a shared sense of

purpose is an important starting point for a strategic approach to communication. People need to understand the collective goal they are working towards and to appreciate the difference they can make.

2Convince your leadersDon’t assume that senior

managers automatically recognise the need for effective communication. They can rely too heavily on more junior managers to convey key messages about their vision through the business, and they can often fail to communicate frequently enough in times of difficulties. Communication is a key skill that you should seek when recruiting people – especially team leaders, and line managers and those who regularly communicate with staff at every level.

3Engage your peopleThe CIPD* has identified

three main drivers of employee engagement: b having the opportunity to

feed their views upwards; b feeling well informed about

what is happening in your organisation; and

b believing their manager’s are committed to the organisation.

The organisation’s approach to engagement will therefore inform

your approach to communication – and vice versa.

4Keep the personal touch

Employees value face-to-face communication highly. The challenge is to ensure that managers develop the skills and confidence to hold meaningful two-way conversations and the opportunity to discuss individual performance and performance standards with their team members. Never under estimate the value of regular 1:1’s. It’s important to let people know that you value these attributes. Consider them as part of the assessment and development process for team leaders, and first line managers.

5Work collaboratively It is important that expertise

from the different disciplines within your organisation is shared in order to create the approach that’s most appropriate. Joined-up thinking is important here, with common objectives shared between areas of the business – and a determined effort to prevent silo thinking.

6Measure your resultsEmployee engagement

surveys are a common method of understanding the effectiveness of internal communications. To be more sophisticated in measuring the success of your activities, and ensuring that successes are celebrated, it can be helpful to segment your audience and look at whether the right message is reaching the right people at the right time.

Key pointsb Employee communication is

essential to create an engaged workforce that’s committed to working towards a shared goal.

b Ensure that leaders realise the importance of communication and take time to share the organisation’s vision.

b Create communication opportunities that are two-

way, not only top-down. b Measure your success and

celebrate the achievements of your people.

Pictured above are a selection of some 59 members of staff from South Somerset District Council who have received a

qualification in Team Leadership and First Line Management through Training4per4mance. The Chairman Cllr. Ian Martin was full of praise

and commented that it takes well informed managers, dedicated supervisors and enthusiastic teams to achieve such high quality services.

Local firm The Colour Works has once again beaten off the national competition and been recognised for its

successes in working with businesses and organisations to help them improve their performance through better understanding of effective team- working.

Giles Miskin and Nick Fewings with their awards

This is the fourth consecutive year that The Colour Works has received the award, presented by Insights Learning and Development Ltd, and Chief Executive Giles Miskin is delighted that The Colour Works has come out on top yet again.

The Colour Works specialises in a colourful model of human behaviours that enables individuals to recognise their own preferred style and understand how styles differ and cause friction and under-performance in the work-

place. ‘Through recognising our own gifts and weaknesses and adapting our behaviours to accommodate others, we create a much more powerful working relationship that fosters

improved team-working and collective dynamism,’ said Giles. ‘It’s really about getting more for less, and in these times that’s even more important.’

Dorset Trainers Pioneer Libyan TeachersA teaching college in Dorset is part of a groundbreaking scheme training Libyans to teach English in their own universities.

The International Teaching and Training Centre (ITTC) in Bournemouth is now in the second year of the project with more than 30 Libyan teachers completing their training in both Tripoli and on the south coast.

The Libyan English Teaching in Universities Project (LETUP) is focusing on nine Libyan universities where English skills are low and there is a shortage of language teachers with internationally-recognised teaching qualifications.

ITTC is the only UK teacher training college involved in the scheme in partnership with the British Council, with funding from the Libyan government.

Point House Café to Make Way for ApartmentsThe landmark Point House Cafe on Southbourne cliff-top is to be replaced with a new development of seven apartments with basement parking. Planning permission has been granted to Harrison Developments following an appeal against Bournemouth planners decision to refuse the scheme.

Commenting on the appeal decision John Montgomery of Bournemouth-based Tanner & Tilley said, ‘Development of this landmark site was always going to be controversial. The inspector accepted our argument that the former Point House Cafe is of no architectural merit and that the proposed scheme designed by Christchurch architects, Anders Roberts, would represent a significant improvement to the character and appearance of this cliff-top site.’

In response to the shorter days and colder temperatures that winter brings, businesses can find their energy bills escalating. Although it is a necessity to keep warm, much of our energy use could be reduced significantly if companies become more energy savvy.

If the government wishes to reach its target to reduce the UK’s carbon footprint by 80% by 2050, then energy consumption with the workplace must be tackled – businesses are responsible for roughly half of the primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide output

in the UK - a major contributor to climate change.

Phil Neale, Director of the Dorset Energy Advice Centre (a not-for-profit organisation which specialises in offering free and impartial advice on all aspects of energy saving

to individuals and companies) commented, ‘With a few small and easy changes, businesses could reap huge savings on their energy bills this winter as well as reducing their carbon emissions.’

It is a fallacy that businesses need to invest a large amount of money in order to reap long term energy saving. According to DEAC, many companies could see immediate results by changing their habits during their course of their day-to-day routines.

Why not follow DEAC’s top three tips that won’t cost the earth:

1Switch off not stand off!According to the Carbon Trust up to 70% of energy reduction could

be achieved if office equipment was managed better. All electrical equipment should be switched off when not in use rather than put on standby. This includes PCs, lighting, photocopiers and printers. Appliances left on standby continue to emit carbon dioxide and consume energy.

2Think natural!Research has shown that employee productivity and happiness

increases with natural lighting and harmonious conditioning rather than an over-reliance on artificial lighting, air conditioning and heating. Business Link suggest that turning the heating or air conditioning down by just one degree can reduce a heating bill of a typical office by 8% a year.

3Change your habits! Encourage employees to use the stairs and not the lift. Use

mugs and glasses instead of using wasteful plastic or styrofoam cups. Change the printer settings to a lower resolution print for non-essential print jobs. Use video conferencing and conference calls rather than travelling. Make environmentally friendly purchases by ensuring that energy ratings are checked – enquire about Energy Star or Europe’s Ecolabel rating.

Self-Storage Depot on the Way to Salisbury

Salisbury is to get a dedicated self-storage depot as part of a company’s south coast expansion plans.

Strongroom Self Storage will be opening up the facilities to the public and commercial customers from the middle of September.

More than £350,000 is being invested in building 300 storage compartments on two levels at the newly refurbished warehouse at Hatches Lane on the Bourne Retail Park, near the A36 Southampton Road.

Strongroom Self Storage acquired the 11,900 sq ft (1,104 sq m) premises, which had a guide price of £625,000 on a 125-year lease, in a deal handled by Myddelton & Major, the Salisbury-based regional commercial property agency and a long-standing Chamber member.

The transaction of the site, which lay vacant for a year following the departure of previous occupier Timber Centre, represents the largest business space deal of its kind in recent months in and around Salisbury.

Nigel Hurst, Strongroom Self Storage’s Director, said, ‘Research indicates there is a strong market in and around Salisbury for what we are offering, and the focus will very much be in making self storage affordable for customers.’
