UK PREMIERE

International hit La Mélancolie des Dragons heads to HOME for its UK premiere.

The poetic and playful story of a band of long-haired metalheads on a quest to build a hard-rock amusement park, La Mélancolie des Dragons is a breathtaking blend of theatre and visual art from our 2015 international guest artist, Philippe Quesne, the artistic director of Nanterre-Amandiers Theatre in Paris. Featuring a car, a dog, classic rock, medieval recorders and a snowy stage, it’s a visually stunning mix of imagination, music, and charming (and undeniably French) humour.

Conceived, directed and designed by HOME’s 2015 international guest artist, Philippe Quesne.

It’s been a tremendous few months since our official opening in May where we welcomed thousands of people into HOME. For our new season, we present the work of some of the most distinctive companies, directors and writers working today.

In our new season, we cross 2,500 years to present the work of playwrights who defined the history of theatre and we invite highly original theatre makers to tell stories in their own unique style.

Aeschylus’ epic of murder and revenge The Oresteia is brought to life with 56 local volunteers playing the chorus, the voice of the city. The Young Vic’s Macbeth - starring the luminous Anna Maxwell Martin - fuses contemporary dance with Shakespeare’s iconic prose. And Samuel Beckett finds humour in the darkest places in his classic of modern theatre, Endgame.

France’s most celebrated directorial talent Philippe Quesne brings his international hit La Mélancolie des Dragons to HOME for its UK premiere. Like a graphic novel burst into life, 1927 present Golem, fresh for its sell out run in the West End.

I am also delighted to welcome two artists for whom I hold great respect. Choreographer Hofesh Shechter returns with

his completed trilogy barbarians and Complicite’s Simon McBurney brings his Edinburgh sensation The Encounter, which features ground-breaking audio technology and storytelling wizardry.

In the New Year, we celebrate Greater Manchester’s most exciting theatre companies and performers with PUSH Festival (formerly Re:play) and our site-specific HOME from HOME strand continues with our associate company Quarantine’s Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring. and The Passion from Streetwise Opera.

As Christmas approaches, we invite all ages to see the UK Premiere of Inkheart, an adaptation of Cornelia Funke’s bestselling young adult novel. At the heart of this thrilling adventure, filled with charm and wit, is a celebration of the power of stories, ideas and the imagination. Just like HOME.

The Oresteia.FRI 23 OCT - SAT 14 NOV

Terrible secrets are handed down through the generations in a bloody chain of murder and revenge. The Oresteia, the first great work of theatre written two and a half thousand years ago, is as gripping and relevant as it ever was. Where is justice in a landscape of blood? Taking the translation by one of the great poets of the twentieth century, Ted Hughes, this swift-moving, newly cut version condenses Aeschylus’ epic trilogy into one play.

HOME welcomes director Blanche McIntyre (Best Director TMA 2013 UK Theatre Awards; Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award), with an ensemble of actors playing multiple roles that cross generations and genders.

The central role of the chorus – the voice of the citizens – will be taken by the people of Manchester in this stunning new production of Aeschylus’ masterpiece.

Created and presented by 1927

Golem.WED 7 - SAT 17 OCT

Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invites you to take a step through the looking glass into a dark and fantastical tale of an extraordinary, ordinary man. Fresh from a sell-out run at London’s Young Vic, with a host of five star reviews from critics from Berlin to London to Sydney, Golem blends stunningly original animation with entrancing music and live performance. And it explores one of the great questions of the modern world – who or what is in control of our technologies?

homemcr.org/barbarians

Tickets £18, £15, £12, £10Conc. available

Age guidance 14+: contains nudity and explicit lyrics

Following his sell-out performances of tHE bAD at HOME in April 2015, the infinitely unpredictable Shechter returns to present a sparse world for three wildly different takes on intimacy, passion  and the banality of love.

Revealing his choreography at its most elegant and intimate, the highly acclaimed and perturbing the barbarians in love opens the evening. Trembling with emotion residing within order, six white-clad figures move as one to the strains of an ecclesiastic baroque score. What follows, as two very different works unfold, is a volatile explosion of dubstep grooves in tHE bAD – at once joyous and trance-like – and a poignant duet which together complete an evening showcasing the singular and wry voice of their creator and the versatility and talent of his individual dancers.

HOME and Citizens Theatre, Glasgow present

EndgameBY SAMUEL BECKETT.THU 25 FEB - SAT 12 MAR

Languishing between life and death, the chair-bound tyrant Hamm (played by David Neilson) and his dutiful but resentful companion Clov (Chris Gascoyne) are irrevocably bound to one another. They pass their days in a filthy, bare room, caught in a loop of futile routines. Their endless and brutal verbal jousting match is punctured only by the nostalgic reminiscing of Hamm’s parents, reduced to living in rubbish bins.

A classic of modern theatre, Beckett’s absurd and macabre play makes a grim joke of life, and finds laughter in the darkness. Dominic Hill, Artistic Director of the Citizens Theatre, brings his talent for gripping and absorbing contemporary interpretations of classic texts to Beckett’s masterpiece.

A Young Vic, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and HOME co-production in association with Lucy Guerin Inc.

macbeth.TUE 2 - SAT 6 FEB

John Heffernan (Oppenheimer;Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell)and Anna Maxwell Martin (South Riding; Poppy Shakespeare) lead the company in Carrie Cracknell and Lucy Guerin’s ambitious new staging of Macbeth.

When the prophecy of three witches proclaims that Macbeth is destined to become the King of Scotland, he and Lady Macbeth embark upon a murderous journey of power, treachery, paranoia, betrayal and suicide. Beginning with Shakespeare’s text, the powerful and unsettling choreography weaves its way throughout the story, culminating in an unforgettable final act where words falter and finally give way.
