THE ALCOHOL EDUCATION TRUST
Enabling teachers, parents, carers and professionals to keep young people safe around alcohol
A small focussed charity that works with schools, parents, health workers, youth outreach teams and young people aged 11-‐18 to prevent underage drinking, reduce drunkenness and its associated risk taking, to help keep our young people safe around alcohol. With targeted support for children with moderate learning difficulties and looked after children who are at most risk from alcohol related harm.
We support schools, charities, youth clubs and organisations with:
Talk about Alcohol Teacher Workbook assists teachers by bringing together the lesson plans, activities and quizzes suitable for different ages and abilities into one easy to use manual that can be photocopied with ease. Available in pdf format online too. This programme is shown to effectively delay the age young people begin drinking.
A further 8 picture and story led resources are available for children with moderate learning difficulties who are three times more likely to be abused with alcohol a contributing factor.
Alcohol and You -‐ Facts about alcohol, staying safe and what to do if things go wrong -‐ The booklet for teenagers can be incorporated into lessons or used on a one to one basis with young people in informal settings, with top tips on how to stay safe and avoid risky situations.
Talking to Kids about Alcohol -‐ A guide for parents and carers is an informative and reassuring guide with tips and guidance on how to approach the issue of drinking with children. This non preachy guide encourages parents and carers in a ‘tough love’ approach and is supported with a parent zone on www.alcoholeducationtrust.org and bi-‐monthly newsletters. We host information evenings and parent evenings in a variety of settings too.
We also deliver training on alcohol education to community leaders, teachers, school nurses, youth outreach workers, police community support officers and those working directly with young people across the UK.
Our new online learning zone www.talkaboutalcohol.com offers activities and games in a digital form for teenagers around alcohol education in a fun interactive way.

Why we need your help We know that drinking too early and too much affects all young people’s life chances, and UK youth levels of binge drinking and drunkenness are in the top 3 in the world.
20% of UK children have lower literacy skills and learning disabilities -‐ These children are particularly vulnerable to being exploited -‐ three times more likely to be abused and alcohol is often a factor. We have bespoke picture and story led activities costing £90 per school or organisation to support.
We have a targeted focus to support communities in Britain where deprivation is highest. People in the most deprived 20% of the population are 4.9 times more likely to die from alcohol-‐related liver disease than those in the least deprived 20%. (The Indices of Deprivation, 2015).
Drinking as an indicator of GCSE success. Teenagers who drink weekly have 20 point lower GCSE predictions, the difference between a C and U, affecting life chances. Underage regular drinkers are also more likely to smoke, try cannabis, novel psychoactive substances, engage in unprotected or risky sex and be a victim or perpetrator of violence and crime. Our programme successfully pushes up the age teenagers begin drinking, hence reducing binge drinking and other risk taking. Furthermore, drinking before the age of 15 has a strong association with future problematic drinking and drug use (PHE, August 2016)
12 children are admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning or intoxication every day. Alcohol is estimated to be a factor in 50% of violent assaults, 13% of road fatalities and 27% of serious case reviews.

Fund raising Whether you are planning to take part in a sporting event or choosing us as your charity of the year – please help us continue to keep young people safe around alcohol across the county. It costs between 30p – 50p a child for our award winning programme. You could choose to support your local secondary school, youth club or sports club with our training, resources or parent outreach.
Curry on fundraising! 14th – 20th November is alcohol awareness week – Please would you invite your friends or colleagues around for supper and ask for donations to The Alcohol Education Trust? Hold a coffee morning or cake bake at work? We work out of a garage to ensure our overheads are kept to a minimum – so your donations go directly to training teachers and community leaders, providing our programme for young people or providing outreaches to parents and carers.
