A group of people walked past the Leafs’ game broadcast, filling the back of a North York bar to hear about Canadian racism.

The ‘Why Should I Care about the Black Lives Matter movement?’ panel discussion attracted a room of about 50 listeners and offered sobering lessons on racial realities over pints at The Rose & Crown on Wednesday, March 9.

Akio Maroon, an internationally recognized human rights activist and Etobicoke’s Andray Domise, co-host of Canadaland Commons were joined by Gordon Cudjoe, a Canadian Association of Black Lawyers board member to speak about the African Canadian expe-rience.

“In Canada we are masters of deception to ourselves, we are mas-ters of lying to ourselves” Domise said. “We don’t want to face up to what’s happening on our side of the border.”

Domise articulated a pattern of persecution through a textbook’s worth of historical facts that rarely find their way into white people’s conversations, he claimed. Between the temporary ban on African Americans entering Alberta under the guise of it being too cold in 1910, and the 1964 demolition of an entire black Halifax community called Africville, Canada’s history has been chalk full of anti-black oppression, he said.

But the three spoke of a system-atic assault on the African Canadian population that isn’t just a 20th Century skeleton.

“It’s amazing to me that we will hand out the key to the city to a Toronto rapper,” Domise said about Drake. “While at the very same time...judges, defence lawyers and prosecutors have used rap lyrics to try and indict black people.”

Both the disproportionate surplus of black incarceration and the lack of indictments against police offi-cers is a direct result of what Domise describes as ‘white supremacy’.

Gordon Cudjoe, a criminal defence lawyer, contends Canadian law has enshrined the police’s right to harass black people without provocation. A 2007 Supreme Court decision against two black men, Wendell Clayton and Troy Farmer, where police officers had no appar-ent reasonable grounds to search the men’s vehicle, has given law enforcement across the country legal precedent to search any black

man at any time, Cudjoe said. “It’s one of the saddest days in my

life when I read a Supreme Court judge basically say ‘When those people decide to party, I will let the police deal with them as they see fit’.” Cudjoe said.

Akio Maroon, who on the very day of the panel received a Women In Leadership award at Queen’s Park, voiced her condemnation of police stops.

“There’s no such thing as a nice or friendly conversation when I’m being stopped and asked for my reason for where I’m going (by police), why I’m where I’m at and for ID,” Maroon said. “There is no friendly way of singling me out and treating me like garbage, treating me like a criminal.”

Though the provincial govern-ment banned the practice of card-ing, many still report being stopped by police without cause, Domise said.

“Toronto (police) three different times had their carding practices reviewed by a legal team to deter-mine, first of all the legality of it, and second of all the efficacy of it and they refuse to release those to the public,” Domise said. “Do you

think it’s entirely possible in this universe that if they found statistical justification for carding, would they keep it silent?”

The conflict over carding cou-pled with the summer 2015 police shooting death of Andrew Loku has sparked new fire into an already heated movement.

“Whenever an officer shoots someone in the United States you know who they are immediately and if they’ve been charged,” Domise said. “The officers who shot Andrew Loku, we should know their names.”

The old adage of Canada host-ing a rosier racial cohesion than the U.S. holds no weight with the three speakers, each offering per-sonal perspectives on the load they carry.

Cudjoe advised whenever you encounter a black person to remind yourself they are a human being and not just a black face.

“I hate going to the line at the bank, I love ATMs,” Cudjoe said. “ATMs don’t slow down when you’re at the front of the line. They’ll give you money if you’re money is in there.”

Maroon challenged the audi-ence to dive into uncomfortable conversations.

“Reach out to your friends who make the stupid joke,” Maroon said. “The joke is not stupid. It is hurtful, it is harmful and it perpetuates the type of violence folks have to live with every single day.”

Domise argues the solution doesn’t involve white people talk-ing with black people about how aware they are.

“When you’re having Thanksgiving dinner and your cousin makes that racist remark and you just roll your eyes because this is the way they are,” Domise said. “Guess what? I’m going to have to deal with them at some point.”

Canada’s racial realities run long, deep

DAVID NICKLEwill return next week. In the meantime, read

his past columns of ‘The City’ online

The sure signs that it’s March Break:

1. You get the sudden urge for maple syrup. Not just so you can lather it on an entic-ing stack of pancakes you are intending to inhale either. Your primary focus is to go to one of those festivals out of the city to actually see how they make the yummy stuff.

2. You constantly day-dream of heading off to High Park, Riverdale Farm or the Toronto Zoo. After which you immediately break into a rousing chorus of Talk to the Animals, secretly hoping the next person who walks by will ask you if you speak rhinoceros. So you can giggle, “Of courseros, can’t you?”

3. Without even real-izing it, you find yourself Googling bed and breakfasts in Muskoka though you don’t even know what the heck they are.

4. You jot down Medieval

Times in big bold letters on your things-to-do list. There’s no getting around it. There’s just something about this holiday that has you itching to see a joust.

5. You find your ears perk-ing up while eavesdropping on a friend’s conversation and you can’t stop yourself from interrupting, “Excuse me. But did I just overhear you say wagon ride? If so, count me in.”

6. Thoughts of scavenger hunts race through your mind.

7. Seeing bustling out-door playgrounds all over the GTA.

8. NCAA Basketball March Madness coming to a TV near you.

9. And a tablet. And a

laptop. And a mobile phone. Incredibly, the latter three often found perched on the lap of one co-worker. Sitting next to you, if you’re lucky.

10. Having celebrities such as Dora the Explorer drop by your local mall to put on a show.

11. Two words: nature trail.

12. Two more: must visit.

13. Last two: right now.

14. Going down to the boardwalk in the Beach.

15: Seeing monarch but-terflies everywhere.

16. Being asked for direc-tions to Casa Loma.

17. Wondering if this will be the year you actually hop on a plane to Florida to catch the Jays at spring training.

18. Or finally muster up the courage to do the scary

Opening safe injection sites is right thing to doA Toronto Board of Health proposal to open safe

injection sites for drug users in three neigh-bourhoods is bound to make many residents

uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do. Put quite simply, these sites will save lives and make our entire city safer.

That being said, if you live in Parkdale, south Riverdale or the Yonge/Dundas area you are rightly feeling some concern. Residents will be asking them-selves if safety in the area will be compromised, if they are at risk of being flooded with heroin and fen-tanyl addicts looking to shoot up. The answer is: No.

The call for the safe injection sites has been made in response to a growing number of deaths related to overdoses during the past decade in Toronto.

Those numbers are up 41 per cent from a decade earlier, and in 2013 a shocking 206 people died after

injecting drugs. In the face of these numbers, to do nothing would be both irresponsible and immoral on the part of the health department and our city’s leaders.

“All lives are important, and nurse-supervised safe injection sites save lives,” said Angela Robertson, executive director of the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre in Parkdale, one of the proposed safe-injection sites.

The South Riverdale CHC and a Toronto Public Health office known as The Works near Yonge and Dundas are also proposed safe injection sites.

All three facilities already offer safe injection kits and have experience. They were identified as the best spots for the safe injection sites since they have the busiest needle exchanges in the city.

Their staff say the existing services prevent the spread of hepatitis C and HIV among drug users.

But more still needs to be done. Many addicts visit-ing these centres are homeless, and since they often use quickly and in public, most often alone, they are at high risk of a lethal overdose. Providing a safe place for them to do this lessens the chance of death or disease.

The board of health will offer further recommen-dations on the safe injection sites this summer, once community meetings are held in the identified areas.

We encourage you to take part in these meetings and learn the facts about this proposal.

transit

West have had to deal with construction impacts from road closures and detours to the removal of on-street parking.

And some business owners have raised the fear the Crosstown will eventually drive them and other longtime proprietors from the street as new development opportuni-ties arise attracted by the new transit line.

But according to Tory, it will be small businesses which stand to benefit from the arrival of the Crosstown, scheduled for completion in 2021.

“The beneficiaries of this project are the people of Toronto and businesses in this part of town and right across the city,” said the mayor along-side Wynne and other provin-cial and city dignitaries.

“This is going to be great for the small businesses along Eglinton the whole way.”

Tory also paid tribute to the Ontario government whose shepherding of the $5.3 bil-lion transit project, he said, had helped end generations of failed progress on bring-ing rapid transit to Eglinton

Avenue.“This proves what happens

when you work together,” he said.

“Gone are the days when we have decisions that are being made and reversed, tunnels which are dug and filled in. We couldn’t continue that way. We had to have a plan and a partnership.”

Keelesdale station is the first to break ground, and the province and Metrolinx have pledged to begin con-struction on all the remain-

ing underground stations between Weston Road and Laird Avenue by the end of 2016. The line travels east of Laird at street-level to Kennedy station in Scarborough.

A total of 2,500 workers are expected to carry out the LRT line’s construction, which will be supported by a community benefits agreement offering local employment and training opportunities, Wynne said.

Representatives from the York-Eglinton BIA could not be reached for comment.

A longtime member of the TTC’s media relations depart-ment has retired from the organization.

Danny Nicholson, or at least his voice, may be rec-ognizable to many riders. You would often hear him on pre-recorded station announce-ments advising of subway closures or advising of the heavy fines for smoking on TTC property.

Nicholson’s last day at the transit commission was Friday, and he leaves a large legacy. Cheers Danny!

wexpect delivery of 4 streetcars a month

It appears the TTC’s long-standing streetcar nightmare is coming to an end.

According to the Toronto Star, Bombardier has pre-sented a plan to deliver four of the sleek new models each month beginning in April. The fleet of low-floor, air condi-tioned, smoothly running vehicles has been a hit with riders, but only 16 are cur-rently in service.

wmcnicoll BUs GaraGe cost still UnKnoWn

A full breakdown of costs for another contentious transit project, the McNicoll Bus Garage, was supposed to have been revealed last week to the executive committee, but city staff admitted the numbers aren’t ready.

The budget for the proj-ect is already known, $181 million, and construction is supposed to begin this year in order for the facility to open by 2019. The TTC has listed the garage as one of its top unfunded construction priorities due to the lack of storage space for its bus fleet, particularly in the city’s north end.

The project has attracted significant opposition from residents near Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue who have attempted to halt the garage, with little success.

wsheppard extension to doWnsvieW soUGht

The significant technical and financial challenge of build-ing a Sheppard Avenue West subway extension from Yonge-Sheppard to Downsview sta-tion has not dissuaded York Centre Councillor James Pasternak from continuing to push for it.

It’s estimated to cost $2 bil-lion, and that doesn’t include the cost of building a bridge over the West Don River.

Last week, Pasternak con-vinced his colleagues on the mayor’s executive committee to support further study of the project, even though the city’s own Feeling Congested review mechanism ranks the proposal in the bottom 25 per cent of all analyzed transit projects.

Unless you are Pasternak, the project is simply not a pri-ority in a city that has more important transit needs.

can sing it, rap it, speak it with power,” said Barbe, who believes writing has emotion-ally healing properties. “These kids are a boiling pot of hot water with the lid on and they don’t know how to ease that pressure of their emotions.”

Barbe said many of today’s youth are exposed to violent images in the media and may not have the tools to manage how they internalize the mes-sage.

Tatiana Sunak, vice-principal of York Memorial agreed.

“Do I think our family of schools have more at-risk students? Of course I do,” Sunak said referring to the West Region 5 (WR5) Family of Schools, a grouping of 26 west-end schools where Sunak said a combination of demographics and low-incomes contribute to more challenging situations for the students. “They (students) are in a different situation than in other areas of Toronto and they definitely need more sup-

port.” Ali Jahangir, one of the

night’s speakers and principal of George Syme Community School and WR5 member was pleased with the event’s turn-out of around 30 parents and students.

“Providing these kinds of forums, these kinds of opportu-nities where kids are channeling that energy into a productive and constructive method is very helpful,” Jahangir said. “It’s our responsibility to increase the student voice and to provide those opportunities where the student voices can be heard.”

The WR5 Family of Schools held a writing contest where 13 winners were selected out of 81 submissions from junior kindergarten to Grade 12.

All of the creative writing will be published in an anthology due to come out in June.

“In our society, in our busy life, parents don’t always have time to listen,” Sunak said. “If they have an outlet where they can speak openly and express

what they feel that gives them more of a sense of belong-ing.” One outlet on display was spoken word poetry, an art form increasingly making its way into Toronto schools. “The kids really like that cre-ative aspect to it, where they can take something written and turn it into something so much more,” said Barbe, who wants a mental health class integrated in the curriculum.

Patrick De Belen, a member of the championship 2012 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word poetry team and pro-fessional performance poetry educator with the TDSB agrees time needs to be dedicated in class to poetry.

“Teachers are given a certain period of time to accomplish a certain amount of subjects and usually teachers will never get through a curriculum in a full year.” De Belen said. “They have to pick and chose which subject they have to cut off and usually in English (class) the subject is poetry.”

A Jewish a cappella group with roots in York is set to release its first CD.

Ruach Singers (named for the Hebrew word for “wind” or “spirit”) was formed to bring a new sound to Saturday morning services at Beth Sholom Synagogue on Eglinton Avenue in York.

Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich and Cantor Eric Moses were looking for ways to energize their congregation through music and approached John-Michael Erlendson and Elana Steingart, co-founders of the popular a cappella group Countermeasure, who then

brought the proposal to their music director Aaron Jensen.

The team now collaborates in choosing and designing the music for the eight-voice Ruach Singers, which grew out of Countermeasure and makes monthly appearances at Beth Sholom’s sabbath ser-vices. The approach is unique and unprecedented, weav-ing contemporary a cappella singing into prayer.

Upcoming dates are April 16, May 7, May 21 and June 11.

Ruach Singers joined forces with Moses (Beth Sholom’s

cantor) in its inaugural CD, Crossroads, which will be released at Beth Sholom at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at the conclusion of the service celebrating the holi-day of Purim.

There is no charge to attend.

For more information, visit ruachsingers.com or call 416-783-6103.

The group’s CD can be ordered online from CDbaby.com or at Beth Sholom for $15.

The City of Toronto

Archives will also host an interactive exhibit showcasing the Green Line from March 19 to April 2.

A York resident has won her “dream car” in the Select Sweepstakes campaign, a partnership between insur-ance provider Economical Select and 73 insurance brokers across Canada.

Mary Yin, an ESL instruc-

tor with the Toronto District School Board, was presented with the keys to a new 2016 Chevy Equinox on March 11.

“This is a big milestone for me. It’s my dream car,” Yin said in a news release.

“It was such a surprise. I was shocked. I’m not usually so lucky.”

N a t i o n a l B r o k e r s Insurance Services’ presi-dent Joyce Usher-Mesiano made the call to advise Yin of her win.
