With 2017 holding on by just a couple more weeks we look back on all that was accomplished this year and thank all those who have helped the Lodge in significant ways, starting with our annual Lodge Banquet on Jan. 28th.
During our Lodge Banquet we thanked our past Lodge Officers for completing their year of service, as well as swearing in our officers for this year. Each new Officer took an oath of office, which was finalized by Lodge Chief Mark Donnell giving an address for the year of 2017.
The evening also included recognition of 2016 Lodge Chief Harrison Booth and Vigil Honor member Leon Lovett with the Founders Award for their service and dedication to the ideals presented to us by both of our founders.

Thoughts from Under the Persimmon Tree…
Greetings Echeconnee:
As most of you know, the National Executive Committee of the Boy Scouts have changed the policy which now will allow
girls into the Boy Scout program. This is another monumental decision made by the Boy Scouts national office in the
recent years. This was one of the changes that should’ve been predicted and was inevitable. There are still a lot of details
that must be worked out and established to make the program work well. One of the topics of discussion still to be
determined is membership into the Order of the Arrow. We already have female adult leaders so the transition should not
be a major issue that drives members away from the Order of the Arrow.
I was Echeconnee’s Lodge Chief when National changed the policy allowing female adult leaders into the OA. Dating
myself, that was some 32 years ago. At that time the youth leadership was bombarded with anger, suggestions, and
heartfelt opinions on whether to support National’s decision or to fight it. Some Lodges openly refused to honor
National’s mandate, basing their argument the destruction of the OA, the loss of the principles behind the Scout Law.
Another argument was the ceremonies and events could not be altered to support women as OA members. The youth
leadership decided we would support National’s mandate and work tirelessly to make the transition seamless and
successful. There were some struggles and hurt feelings and some membership left the Lodge in protest. A great deal of
these members eventually return to Lodge. The adult leadership was totally supportive of the youth leader’s decisions and
did not influence the youth with their opinion. Some 32 years later and the OA is still here with it's principles intact. The
OA is as strong as it has always been even with the policy changes. The Echeconnee Lodge is 70 years old this year.
Personally, I believe if we were to ask each youth member of the Boy Scouts, the majority would support National’s
decision. The youth today are more in tuned with coed activities at church, school, and other events. This change will not
be a drastic impact on the youth as long as they are not influenced by adults with an agenda. This is another learning
experience provided by the Boy Scouts of America to the youth of today, the youth leaders should be allowed to make
their own decision and stand by their decision. I hope the adults with the agendas understand the negative example they are
setting for the youth.
The Fall Fellowship was my last official event as Lodge Adviser. Congratulations to Sheila Sweat, the new Lodge Adviser
My decision to move on was not easy but it is based on two issues, my health and my tenure as Lodge Adviser. I have
served as Lodge Adviser for three years and the previous year and half to that as Co-Adviser with Ross. I believe the Lodge
Adviser needs to be switched out in that timeframe on a regular basis to provide new
leadership, new ideas, and new resources to the youth. I am not planning to leave the
Boy Scouts or the Order of the Arrow or become an inactive member. I hope to get
back to providing more photographs of our events. It has truly been an honor to serve
as your Lodge Adviser and I would like to thank each of you for the support.

The National Leadership Seminar (NLS) is a
weekend conference focusing on the skills
and characteristics of leadership. It is
intended primarily to enhance the
leadership skills of the Order of the
Arrow’s key youth and adult members, as
they seek to improve their service to the
Boy Scouts of America and the greater
community.
The NLS will provide participants with:
A challenging, inspiring, and enjoyable
learning experience
A better understanding of the skills of
leadership, and how to apply them
A better understanding of themselves and
of other people
A realization that, with practice and work,
everyone can improve their leadership skills
An understanding that leadership skills
work in tandem with one another
An understanding that different situations
require the application of different
leadership skills
A model with which to evaluate themselves
and others in the use of leadership skills
Lodge Leadership Development Training
LLD was held December 9-10 at Ross Adams’ camp house in Hawkinsville. We conducted
training sessions for future Lodge officers, games, shotgun shooting, and great food. Even
though winter storms hit north Georgia, the LLD continued on. The LLD was attended by
10 youth members and 9 adults. The 2018 year of events was planned. Chief Ben Lilley
started a new tradition—a polar bear plunge in the Adam’s pond!

Hello everyone, . I am notifying you that Indian Winter is coming up, on February 2-4. It will be located at Black Creek Scout Reservation. ALL registration this year will be online. We currently only have about two peo-ple signed up. On this camp out, there will be training sessions about dance, drum, and other cere-monies. I would like as many people as possible to make this event. We should represent Echecon-nee well, and if we want future ceremony, dance or drum teams, we should learn to do it here. While there is learning, there will also be much fun. The link to register is https://www.sr-9.org/event-registration. Thanks for all everyone does to help, and sign up soon, the further you wait the more the price goes up. Yours in WWW, Chief Ben Lilley
