How to plan your revision
The revision calendar above is the first thing you should complete to ensure an effective revision period. By planning your
revision you ensure that you give all your subjects the right amount of attention, you are in the best academic shape
before each exam and it takes the pressure off you as you know you have prepared properly. Here’s what to do.
1) Each day is divided into 5 parts. Use the top section to fill in your 9am exams and the third one to fill in your 2pm
exams. Use your exam timetable to do this.
2) Write in your subjects in the key boxes on the last page and give each of your subjects a different colour.
3) Next block out all your commitments over the next few weeks. This includes things like football training, that are
regular features in your life and other times you will be doing other things.
4) Colour in the sections on each day of the timetable showing you which subjects you will be working on during that
part of the day (this does not mean a solid 3 hour block). You should be varying revision so each subject is given
long, medium and short term attention. The best revision works this way and your planner should be a rainbow of
the colours.
TOP TIP! Revise your toughest subjects first in the day. That way you are fresh and alert when you revise them!
What do I need to revise?
Use the specification for each subject to make sure you know what units and topics to revise.
The best way is to ask your teachers for a list of the topics on each paper then you can create a checklist
for each exam to work on when following the revision plan you have made.
This could look something like this..
Topics to cover Had a go
Nearly there
Nailed it
Compare your notes from class with the topic lists. Identify the gaps in your knowledge and make a list of
topics you hope don’t come up in the exam. Target these areas in your early revision phases.
Use the timetable to complete the overall plan and then use the following revision planner to put in your
targeted areas and the rewards you will give yourself once completed.

Make sure you have enough sleep from the revision stage right
through the exam period. This way you will revise better and
have more stamina during the exams themselves.

Condensing notes onto flashcards are a good way to get
revision on track. Bonus revision time as they are portable.

Remember to revise in chunks of time. Between 20-25 minutes
and no more. You should then have a 5 – 10 minute break.

Stick Post-It notes with key terms around the house. You can
use this method to create a mental plan of key terms based on

Revising with others is good for a change and only if you are
testing each other. Your best quality revision will be done
independently.

Mind maps are effective especially when combined with colour
and pictures. This helps the brain to make associations and
connections.

You are nearly there. Keep up the hard work. It will pay off!
How should I revise?
Not all these strategies will work for you, some will be better for different subjects. If you get stuck take a
short break and then try another strategy. The main thing is to do something with the information. Create
new connections and meanings. This ensures you understand what you have revised and allow your brain a
better chance of remembering it.
1) Condense notes to main ideas, key terms and key points. Index cards work well.
2) Create first letter phrases. Take a list you need to remember and make up a memorable phrase with
the first letters that match. For example the colours of the rainbow are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,
Blue, Indigo and Violet. This is commonly remembered with “Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain”.
Try your own now for the 7 signs of life (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction,
Excretion and Nutrition).
3) Explain what you have revised to someone else in your own words. This means your brain has to find
new ways to construct meaning.
4) Find weird connections and embrace them. For example if you wanted to remember the name of the
German gunboat in the Moroccan Crisis the Panther picture a large black paw print on a map of
North Africa. Ok, not a great example but it’s whatever works for you.
5) Create flowcharts for processes, great for maths and sciences.
6) Use past papers. Be careful here. Do not attempt whole papers but break it up into a couple of
questions a day on different topics for each subject.
7) Test yourself on your revision regularly 3 hours after you have learnt it, then 3 days and 3 weeks.
Revisiting like this commits information to the long term memory.
8) Create visual mind maps that use colour and images – Use the mind map on creating mind maps to
help you at the end of this booklet
Overall, work hard but take care of yourself. Have social time and let parents, friends and teachers
know your progress, even if it’s not going great. A problem shared…..
