Dear parents and carers,
School Concert and School Fete
What a fabulous evening with the whole school community
together enjoying the Annual Concert. I felt so proud of our
students with their performances. They demonstrated many of
the PYP Attitudes and Learner Profile.
Cooperation- Classes working together to create a
performance.
Commitment- Sticking to it and giving our best even when a
movement could be challenging.
Enthusiasm- Enjoyment and fun, this was definitely evident
last night.
A Risk-Taker- having the courage to perform in front of an
audience which is a new situation for many children.
I would like to thank Janine Bell who led with the organisation
and planning of the timetable for dance classes and the overall
concert. Your commitment to the Arts at FPS is appreciated.
Thanks to Martin who supported with the organisation of the
sound system for the concert. I would also like to acknowledge
Chris Wilson who always is proactive and supportive of whole
school events. He contributes his time generously. Finally
huge thanks to Andy (father at school) whose enthusiasm and
passion for dance choreographed an amazing experience for
our students.
Classrooms for 2018
A clearly defined, collaborative process for the placement of
children into classes will lead to greater efficiency, increased
understanding and improved opportunities for learning. At
Footscray Primary School we recognise the professionalism
and commitment of all teaching staff in arranging the annual
allocation to classes from Foundation to Year 6.
Teachers are currently organising classes for 2018. As you
are aware we do not take requests for particular teachers, so
please do not send any correspondence in an attempt to
discuss such matters. Essentially a letter must be written to
the Principal with any vital factors for us to consider that may
impact on your child’s learning that are factual in nature and
not based on assumptions. We have a policy about allocation
for classes and this is located on our website. Please read
through the policy carefully.
Vietnamese will also be integrated into the classroom
environments in 2018 so that this is more transdisciplinary in
nature too. The language will be strongly connected to the
transdisciplinary themes so that this is more authentic and
meaningful for the students. This matches the feedback from
our students discussed during the recent School Review. I
have included information about the bilingual model as
discussed at the parent foum.
An exciting curriculum model for 2018
Through the work of the teachers and the leadership team in
2017 we have developed an exciting model for learning at
Footscray Primary school.
Two weeks ago we held a parent forum and explained the
model for learning in 2018. It is an exciting time as we
strengthen the teaching to achieve a curriculum that is truly
transdisciplinary and international in nature.
Transdisciplinary learning connects traditional subjects
through big ideas, such as ‘Who We Are’; ‘Where We Are In
Place and Time’; and ‘Sharing the Planet’.
Learning a language enables the students to develop
understanding of another culture and develop intercultural
understanding and international mindedness.
Learning how to learn and the development of the PYP
Attitudes and Learner Profile will also be strongly
embedded into the language context. The conceptual
questions and the language of this has been taught to the
students in both languages.
The co-teaching of Mathematics has worked well
throughout the school and the teachers will continue to do
this using a team teaching model.

Footscray Learning Precinct
Information Session:
Announcement of transition,
governance and the shared
learning framework.
During August, the Victorian School
Building Authority (VSBA) asked for
your feedback on the Footscray
Learning Precinct. The VSBA wanted
to make sure your hopes, aspirations
and concerns were identified and
addressed when designing how the
precinct will work day to day.
Detailed findings from the community
engagement process have helped
develop student transition
arrangements, school governance
and the shared learning framework.
Come and hear how your feedback is
shaping the Footscray Learning
Precinct.
When: Tuesday 5 December 2017
Where: Footscray City College
Time: 6pm – 7.30pm

Common assessment strategies will be implemented to
support the careful tracking of students across the year
level. Teacher plan the learning together to support the
meeting of a range of learning needs.
A dual language program will be implemented where all
students will have an opportunity to experience the
language learning which is integrated throughout the week
and connected to the learning experiences in the
classroom. Stronger connections will be made to the units
of inquiry and the six themes, so the children are learning
through and about the language.
Next year’s model will not be:
Students working in open classrooms. Our learning from this
year is that we need to keep the transitions to a minimum and
reduce the number of teachers the students have. There has
been too much movement for our students and this has been
unsettling for our children.
I want to encourage parents to stop predicting what may not
be in 2018. We have reached an exciting model for learning
that will be integrated into the PYP framework for learning.
Your feedback throughout 2018 will be important and there
will be opportunities through the regular parent forums and
parent surveys to participate in this.
I am looking forward to the School Fete on Saturday and look
forward to spending the day with the community.

Grade One News
Transdisciplinary theme: Sharing the Planet
Central idea: People make choices to share the local
environment responsibly.
Lines of Inquiry:
The local environments we use and share.
The different actions people take to be responsible for their
local environment.
To provoke the children’s thinking about sharing the local
community we asked them “what makes a good park?” The
children individually drew their ideas on a map. The ideas
included roller coasters, play equipment, grass areas, duck
ponds and waterslides.
Our next question was “what is the difference between a
community park and a theme park?” A major difference was
the cost and the surrounding environment.
The children collaborated with a partner to think of 3 facilities
that a community park should have. Next the whole class
discussed and composed a list of the top 10 facilities for a
community park. This list became our criteria for judging local
parks. Earlier in the week we used the criteria to assess our
school grounds as a park.
Last week the Year 1 children visited Footscray Park and used
the criteria to assess how useful it is for the local community.
It was a great outing! Ask your children how they rated the
park.
Essential Education Items 2018 We have been delayed in releasing the above costs. School Council will be finalising these next week. Letters will then be sent to all home addresses on Compass with relevant information and a timeline for payment which will be early in 2018. Those families with a Health Care/Concession card may be eligible for CSEF funding and need to complete the form attached to this newsletter and return to the office by early 2018. Payment plans and financial assistance will be available next year upon request. The 2018 CSEF application form is attached to this newsletter.
Grade Two News
Central Idea: Materials can be changed or combined for
particular purposes.
Lines of Inquiry:
Properties of materials.
Materials that can be combined, changed or remade.
Methods to combine or mix materials
The reasons people combine or mix materials to form
different products.
How scientists pose questions and make predictions
At the conclusion of our Units of Inquiry, the teaching teams
sit down and evaluate the successes and areas of
improvement for each unit. This term, we decided to invite
Octavia (2A), Patrick (2A), Sierra (2B),
Morgan (2B), Gian (2C) and Charley (2C) to give us some
feedback on how we could improve our unit for How the
World Works. Some of the prompting questions were around
their learning, their understanding of the transdisplinary
skills, their understanding of the PYP attitudes and attributes,
and what we could do next time to make the learning more
exciting. Their feedback was valuable and reflected a strong
understanding of our unit of inquiry. It also reflected their
desire to take ownership over their learning and that they
had some fantastic ideas for learning experiences that would
help the 2018 Grades 2s inquire into the central idea. Read
on to find out some of their reflections about how they felt
giving feedback to the teachers and being involved in our
planning meeting.
Prompting Question: What did you like about giving
feedback to your teachers about our Unit of Inquiry?
Octavia: “I liked the way we got to share the things that we
enjoyed and thought were good about the unit.”
Charley: “I liked the way we were allowed to share our ideas
about how we would make the learning better.”
Sierra: “I liked how we got to make some choices about
what we could do next time to make the unit better. We get
to have a part in it, it is not just the teachers doing it.”
Gian: “I liked that we got to say if the unit was any good and
how we could make it better for next year’s Grade 2s.”
Patrick: We got the chance to say how we could improve
our learning for that unit.
Morgan: I like that we got to ask lots of questions and we
got to share our opinions about the unit.
FOSTER CARERS needed!
Can you offer a home for a vulnerable
child? Anyone can become a carer. They
are couples, singles, from
different cultural backgrounds, with or
without their own children. They are
people who have the desire to give a child
a safe and welcoming place to stay.
Next information session will be held
in Yarraville on Saturday 9th
December at 10am.
