The Wright Brothers lesson is an introduction to a small

group project based on the book: Heroes of Ohio by Rick

Sowash

The lesson will:

• be geared toward a typical third grade social studies class.

• be introduced on day one of a six day lesson.

• be the guide to the students as a suggested format for their small group report.

Objectives of the lesson:

• to introduce the students to Heroes of Ohio.

• allow the students to work creatively in small groups.

• provide the class with new knowledge of the Wright Brothers and other Heroes of Ohio.

Materials:

• Book: Heroes of Ohio by Rick Sowash• Pencil and paper• Computers (classroom or lab)• Other books on the Wright Brothers:

• First to Fly by Peter Busby• The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk by Donald J. Sobol• Tall Tails: Wingin’ It with the Wright Brothers by Dona Smith• A Treasure of Ohio Tales by Webb Garrison• Ohio by Diana Landau

Student Activities

• After an introduction to the book Heroes of Ohio by Rick Sowash the students will gain information on the Wright Brothers by listening to the 4 page selection read aloud.

• Students will use the computer and books to gain other information about the Wright Brothers and discuss with small groups and then the entire class.

Extended Activities

• Discuss the Ohio/North Carolina debate (last slide).

• Research other types of transportation and who invented them (automobile, locomotive, etc.)

Wilbur Wright

Born: April 16, 1867Died: May 30, 1912

Orville Wright

Born: August 19, 1871Died: January 30, 1948

Ohio/North Carolina dispute Ohio and North Carolina both take credit for the Wright

brothers and their airplanes - Ohio because the brothers developed and built their design in Dayton, and North Carolina because Kitty Hawk was the site of the first flight. With a spirit of friendly rivalry, Ohio has adopted the informal slogan "Birthplace of Aviation" (later "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers", crediting not only the Wrights, but also John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, both Ohio natives.) North Carolina has adopted the slogan "First In Flight" and both states include the themes on the standard-issue state license plates. Both states included an image of the Flyer I on their respective state quarters.
