Professional ignition systems for effective engines
Small engine ignition systems
SMALL ENGINE IGNITION SYSTEMS
comprise analogue and digital ignition sys-
tems for two- and four-stroke engines as well
as generators.
The ignition system is flexible and can easily be
customised to different applications. A number
of our products are used in tools such as chain-
saws, bush cutters and trimmers, where it fea-
tures functions like trip counters, communica-
tion and power to external devices as well as
boosted voltage during low speed sparks.
Our ignition systems are constantly being developed to
improve their functionality and sustainability along with
their environmental footprint. We are always on the look-
out for reliable and user friendly solutions that minimise
the environmental impact of our customers’ engines and
help them meet environmental legislation.
Our ignition systems are flexible and can with slight changes to functionality and geometry be
adapted to different applications.
The right ignition system gives the engine the properties needed to perform effectively. In close conjunction with
our customers, we develop professional, dependable systems with long-term reliability. We currently supply
analogue and digital ignition systems to a number of the world’s leading producers of handheld equipment.

Special ignition systems for alternative fuel engines
Gas ignition systems
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES HAVE HIGH PRIORITY
around the world. Technical solutions to minimise envi-
ronmental harm are making steady progress in most fields.
We also deliver ignition systems for stationary engines
that run on fuels such as natural gas and biogas. The en-
gines are used in applications such as electricity produc-
tion – a fast growing market.
The products are often used in applications where a high
level of uptime is expected.
Proprietary technology for monitoring and diagnostics
enables SEM to meet tough application requirements.
With the use of ion current sensing, using only the spark
plug as a sensor, we can provide a number of diagnostic
tools. This offers a low cost and robust solution because
no separate sensors have to be introduced. Examples of
functionality can be: Misfire detection, Pre-ignition and
Knock detection, Peak pressure position and also Spark
voltage measuring.
Growing environmental awareness in the major cities of the world means vehicles used in collective traffic are
more often using alternative fuel engines. As a result, one of SEM’s fastest growing product areas is ignition
systems for engines run on biogas and natural gas. We provide customised solutions for heavy vehicles and
stationary applications.
One of SEM’s fastest growing product areas is
ignition systems for engines that run on biogas and natural gas.
SEM has for many years delivered ignition systems for
natural gas vehicles in the US where authorities were early
in setting tough demands for emission levels.

Practical application pro-vides invaluable experience
SEM’s car ignition system has been on the market for over 20 years. This long practical experience has given us
invaluable knowledge that we are happy to share.
Automotive ignition systems
SEM IS ONE OF THE DEVELOPERS behind the ignition
system for SAAB Automobile, one of the most advanced
systems on the market with unique functionality.
The system has functions for effective sparking as well as
individual measurement of knocking and poor combustion
using ion sensing in every cylinder.
The system has been on the market for over 20 years. Years
of practical experience and continuous development have
formed the base for the next generation of ignition systems.
We’re also collecting detailed information from ion sense
signals so we can improve emission levels and engine
performance.

Quality solenoids boost production economy
OUR EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE from the automotive
sector helps us in our development of solenoids. We are
well aware of the specific requirements for end product
functionality, even in harsh application environments.
Solenoids from SEM are primarily used by manufac-
turers in the automotive and heavy vehicle industry, as
well as by engineering companies. In each of these ar-
eas we can offer quality solutions with excellent pro-
duction economy. Our range of products also includes
solenoid-based valves.
One of our key development areas is the production
of solenoids for automotive applications in our Chi-
nese plant.
The combination of Swedish engineering and Chinese production makes SEM solenoids an attractive alter-
native in numerous application areas. We work in close partnership with vehicle and engineering industries
throughout the world.

Right stators lessen the environ- mental impact of diesel engines
THE STATOR IS A PART of the injection system in a
diesel engine; a vital component that affects engine ef-
fect and environmental impact. High pressure and rap-
id response help lower emission levels and reduce the
amount of harmful particles such as NOx.
Our close working relationships with world leaders in
engine manufacture help keep us in tune with the latest
emission level regulations.
Our combined knowledge of mechanics and electromag-
netism means we can develop stators that meet market
requirements across the board.
As environmental legislation becomes stricter, technical solutions to reduce emissions are being refined. An im-
portant component affecting engine emission levels is the injector stator. Intensive development work, combined
with extensive knowledge in the electromagnetic field and ideal production facilities enable SEM to offer stators
to meet all requirements.

Heat exchangersThe Laminova heat exchanger
Laminova heat exchangers are used as intercoolers in turbo
and supercharged petrol and diesel engines. Another applica-
tion is as oil coolers to control engine and transmission oil
temperatures, or for instance the temperature of the power
steering system.
Laminova oil coolers are 20% more efficient than the com-
petition due to the unique patented core design. The finned
exterior on the cooler core creates a larger surface area com-
pared to that of traditional “radiator” style coolers. The heat
exchangers offer both maximum heat transfer and low pres-
sure drop, something not before possible.
The Laminova heat exchangers are custom designed and we
cooperate closely with designers and OEM-manufacturers
world wide.
The small and flexible package is used for both cooling and
heating applications in many different motor vehicles.
Laminova heat exchangers provide outstanding engine and transmission oil temperature control in the most
severe conditions. From high performance racing cars to Paris-Dakar rally cars, you can rely on Laminova.
Laminova oil coolers are 20% more efficient than the
competition due to the unique patented core design.

THE SENSORS PRODUCT AREA has measurement sen-
sors based on both hall sensor and inductive technology.
Inductive sensors are easily adapted to various applica-
tions. They are fully contact-free and are highly accurate.
Potential application areas include clutch and brake wear
indicators, gear position indicators and measurement of
liquid levels and pressure.
SEM has been working with sensors for close to 30 years. We manufacture inductive and contact-free sensors
that are designed to work even in demanding environments.

The history of Svenska Elektromagneter
Since it was founded in 1915, Svenska Elektromagneter –
SEM – has played an active role in Swedish industry.
The SEM factory in Åmål delivered the very first ignition
equipment to Thulinverken in Landskrona during World
War I. The equipment was installed in the plane Tummelisa,
which had its inaugural flight immediately following the
war. Reliability and quality were decisive factors behind the
purchase and Svenska Elektromagneter was at that time the
only company able to meet the demanding criteria.
SEM has retained its focus on electromagnetism and over
long periods the company’s knowledge and products have
been unique not only in Sweden but worldwide.
Today SEM is part of the Opcon Group which is listed
on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm. SEM is part of the Engine
Efficiency business area.
Precision and environmental concern
SEM’s original idea remains firm: We shall develop and
manufacture products that, in an energy-effective man-
ner, initiate, generate and transform power.
Requirements on performance and technical precision
have gradually been extended with environmental re-
quirements. Within the company there is an intensive,
ongoing process to develop technology that can make a
positive contribution to the environment.
SEM is certified in accordance with ISO/TS 16949 and
ISO 14001. Our work environment is certified in accord-
ance with OHSAS 18001.
