Four years ago I cofounded Tile with a simple goal: I wanted to help my wife, Camila, who was always losing things. The list is very long! It includes a half dozen jackets; a cell phone; motorcycle keys; backpacks—even a rental car. After she lost her mother’s ruby ring, she cried for days. We turned the apartment upside down and posted signs on street lamps. We never found the ring.

I was inspired to help Camila so she would never feel that sense of loss again. We launched a crowdfunding campaign to see if other people had the same problem, and discovered thousands of people who lost all sorts of precious things: laptops, bikes, keys, wallets, purses and passports.

The idea for Tile was simple: a small, affordable device people could attach to the things they didn’t want to lose. It would send frequent, private signals to the owner’s smartphone and the Tile network so it could always be located.

We shipped the original Tile in June 2014. A little over two years later, we have sold 6 million Tiles and we help people find half a million items each day—a testament to the value of helping people keep track of the things that matter to them most. We’ve heard it all: A little girl found a lost stuffed penguin in Times Square. A guy was able to recover a stolen car in California. One lady found her cat hiding under the porch.

Our latest introduction, Tile Slim, is the result of listening to customers who told us they wanted to protect even more things.

In the end, we hope Tile helps people find more than just their keys. We hope it helps them find peace of mind.

Last Place Seen

The app automatically maps the last place your Tile was recorded. Simply open up your lost item on the app and tap the map to get the approximate location and directions to your Tile. This gives you a starting point to look for your Tile so you don’t have to retrace your steps.

Community FindIf your Tile is not where the app last saw it, tap the Notify When Found button in the app. This will securely and anonymously put all other Tile apps on the lookout for your Tile. You’ll receive an alert if any other phone in the Tile network comes within range of your item. Community Find uses Tile’s global network which spans 200 countries and territories and helps people locate more than half a million items every day.

Easy Setup1. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone under settings.2. Download the Tile app from the App Store or Google Play.3. Register your account. 4. Setup your first Tile by pressing the “+” sign in the left corner.

How to Ring your Tile Slim

1. Open up the Tile app to find your list of Tiles.2. Tap the Tile in your list you want to ring.3. Tap the green “Find” button.4. Listen for the Tile tune.5. After you’ve found your Tile, tap the blue “Done” button

to make your Tile stop ringing.

*Note: You need to be in Bluetooth range (up to 100ft.) and connected to your Tile to be able to ring it. You can tell if you’re in range by the color of the ring surrounding the Tile icon in your app. If it’s green, you’re good to go!

How to Ring your Phone

1. Double press the button on your Tile. If your lost phone is within the 100-foot Bluetooth range*, it will loudly ring—even on silent.

2. If you lost your phone far away, finding it is still easy. Log into our website app to see its last known location, to make it ring, or to send a lock-screen message to the friendly folks who might find it.

* Phone must be within Bluetooth range in order to reverse ring your phone
