Pat HowardPresident - TA Instruments

TA Instruments is the world’s largest supplier ofthermal and rheological instrumentation, with a historyof product innovation dating back to our beginningwithin the DuPont company in 1962.

In 1990, TA Instruments, Inc. began operations as astand-alone company and in 1993 acquired Carri-MedPlc., a UK-based supplier of fluid rheometers whichbroadened our company’s position in materialscharacterization. In 1996, TA Instruments became asubsidiary of Waters Corporation, a world leader inhigh performance liquid chromatography/gel perme-ation chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Headquartered in New Castle, DE (USA) we haveoffices in the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain,Italy, Australia and Japan. We are represented in over35 other countries worldwide by a network of agentsand distributors chosen for their strong reputation forcustomer support.

Our engineering staff has a long history of innova-tion, having designed the first computerized thermalanalyzer, dual sample DSC, bench-top DMA anddielectric analyzer. Recent developments includepatented technologies for High Resolution TGA™,Modulated DSC®, patent pending Modulated TGA™ andmost recently Micro-Thermal Analysis, winner of theGold Award for the best new product at PittCon ’98and the R&D 100 award.

In rheology, our engineers are recognized as thepioneers of controlled stress rheology and have devel-oped numerous enhancements including automatedgap set, efficient Peltier temperature systems and high

temperature induction heaters. Recent innovationsinclude the AR1000 rheometer with normal force andthe highly versatile DMA2980 with unique air bearingand optical encoder technology.

To further enhance this product line, our softwareengineers have developed versatile, user friendly soft-ware for the Windows® operating environment.

Building on that solid historic foundation, we havea continuing commitment to expanding our productoffering. Our goal is to provide customers with a broadchoice of solutions to their problems, while maintain-ing the ability to easily and cost effectively upgradetheir systems as needs change.

Just as important as the technology is the supportthat enables you to obtain maximum benefit from yourinvestment. This support includes multiple levels oftraining as well as service from the company ranked#1 in a recent survey of over 30 analytical instrumentsuppliers.

We look forward to helping you solve your materialscharacterization problems. Thank you for giving usthe opportunity to earn your business.

Sincerely,

Patrick Y. Howard, Ph.D.President

Markets & ProductsThermal analysis monitors changes in physical

or chemical properties as a material is heated orcooled. Rheology evaluates the deformation and flowof materials under force. The two techniques can beapplied to polymers (plastics, elastomers, composites),pharmaceuticals, foods/biologicals, adhesives, oils &lubricants, paints & coatings, as well as inorganics.

Thermal analysis and rheology have a wide rangeof uses, including basic research, product develop-ment, quality assurance and evaluation of competitivematerials. TA Instruments has developed a seriesof products specifically designed to address theseapplications.

Our thermal analysis product offering is the mostcomplete in the industry. It includes all the traditionalthermal analysis techniques (DSC, DTA, TGA, TMA,DMA, and DEA), automated DSC & TGA systems, several specialized techniques (pressure DSC, photo-calorimetry, simultaneous DSC-TGA, TGA-mass spec-trometry and Micro-Thermal Analysis), plus threevariable heating rate techniques (Modulated DSC ®,High Resolution TGA™ and Modulated TGA™).

The rheology product offering includes researchgrade and quality control rheometers, as well as adedicated asphalt rheometer designed to addressworldwide government regulations for highwayconstruction materials.

Our products are reliable and easy to use,and with software designed for the MicrosoftWindows® operating system, a minimumof operator training is required.

Commitment to QualityTA Instruments’ thermal analysis products are manu-

factured at our New Castle facility while the rheologyproducts are manufactured at the Leatherhead, UKfacility. Our experienced manufacturing teams, whichinclude engineers, skilled technicians and assemblers, planners, buyers, quality assurance and distributionpersonnel, are totally committed to the timely deliveryof quality products that assure long-lasting superiorperformance.

Our instruments and accessories are manufacturedin small batch lots from parts fabricated to tight toler-ances by a select group of suppliers with whom we’veestablished long-term relationships. Every completedinstrument is rigorously tested before shipment toensure smooth installation at your location.

A low level of warranty problems (<0.5% of instru-ments shipped have problems significant enough torequire recalibration or replacement of components)bears evidence that the Deming Quality practices ofour manufacturing organizations are providing tangiblebenefits to our customers. Furthermore, our continuedquest for quality improvement resulted in ISO 9000Certification of our New Castle facility in 1992, theLeatherhead facility in 1998 and CE compliance of allmajor products in 1996.

Commitment to SupportOur employees represent over 2300 years of

combined thermal analysis and rheology experi-ence. As specialists in these techniques, we arein the unique position to provide the four keyelements of support (training, technical/applicationsconsulting, service, parts and consumables) neededto help you obtain maximum value from yourinvestment.

Our training activities include initial on-sitetraining, CD-ROM’s and videotapes, and formaltraining courses. Customer telephone hotlinesprovide ready access to both applications andservice experts. A steady flow of published applica-tions information is distributed worldwide. Costcompetitive maintenance agreements and IQ/OQcertification which include calibration with certifiedstandards are also available. These support activi-ties have earned us the highest level of customersatisfaction in our industry.

The FutureTA Instruments’ long-term vision has been to

become more than just a thermal analysis supplier. The addition of rheology products was the first steptoward growing into synergistic materials character-ization techniques. Our affiliation with WatersCorporation, and the development of new techniqueslike Micro-Thermal Analysis are recent examplesof this continuing growth.

Waters’ similar corporate philosophy for con-tinuing new product development and strongcustomer support means that TA Instruments’ focuson customers will remain unchanged during thisgrowth process.

The future for our markets is promising. Useof polymers and other high performance materialsis expanding, with a continuing infusion of newmaterials and applications. This is further enhancedby recycling efforts, and the growing use of thermalanalysis and rheology for quality control.

Worldwide, the demand for sophisticatedanalytical instruments parallels the expansion ofmaterials development and manufacturing indeveloping countries. TA Instruments is poisedto share in those opportunities.
