‘Parent Satisfaction’ Survey – due this week Thank you to all the parents who have taken the time to complete the ‘Parent Satisfaction’ survey which was sent out with the last newsletter. A reminder, that the survey is due by Wednesday 23rd October. All comments will be collated and included in our 2013 Annual School Report. New Canteen Tender for 2014 On Friday 9th August the Canteen Tender Committee including Maxelle Matthews, Judy Jones, Jenny Wilbow & Belinda Schuster met to decide on the best tender submission. After many hours of discussion, the committee unanimously decided to offer the tender to ‘Healthy Canteens Australia’. They are a very experienced company who currently operate 31 school canteens. The new tender will start at the beginning of 2014. New canteen menus and other details will be announced in coming newsletters. To ensure that we meet acceptable standards, the P&C have voted at the last meeting to refurbish the current canteen before the new tender starts. This work will be completed during the January holidays. Enrolments for 2014 – Are you moving? Thank you to those parents who have notified the school that they are moving schools in 2014. If you are intending to leave the school this year and not already notified the teacher and the office on 9639 8518, please do so as soon as possible (excluding year 6 of course). Accurate numbers are important for our class planning and staffing for 2014. Maxelle Matthews Living and learning together Page 1

SCHOOL ACCOUNTS Thank you to families who have sent in their payments and
finalised their accounts for the school year. Just a reminder
that all payments (current and outstanding), along with
permission notes for extra-curricular activities will need to be
completed by Friday 8th November, 2013 due to the
Department’s end of year financial rollover. For PAYG
families, you are required to return permission notes and
money to your child’s class teacher.
If you have a problem with your account, we extend to you
again, the opportunity to discuss this matter by contacting
the school on 9639 1931. You will need to do this before 8th
November, 2013. Parents are also advised that our school
is also being audited within the next couple of weeks so your
support in resolving all matters would be greatly appreciated.

FROM THE DEPUTY Stage 2 Camp Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of accompanying the Stage 2 kids and teachers to the Sydney Academy of Sport for our first Stage 2 camp. The kids were asked to give themselves a challenge and they certainly rose to the occasion, with every child trying every activity and setting themselves their own personal challenges…. Some kids aimed to get to the top of the rock climbing wall, some aimed for a few metres off the ground. While some kids hoped for three bulls-eyes, others aimed to just hit the target. During the kayaking activity some children were pleasantly surprised they didn’t capsize, others explored the local creek. No matter what each child achieved, they all returned from camp proud of themselves knowing they had achieved something special. Over the next few weeks we will build on this confidence and aim to transfer some new skills to the classroom. We will also start planning for next year by surveying parents on their thoughts on the camp and ideas for future adventures. Many thanks Winston Hills for making the first Stage 2 camp a success and for helping the school set a direction for future challenges. Selective High School Last week all Year 5 students were issued with notes explaining how to apply for a 2015 selective high school position. Every student is asked to return this note to inform the school of their intentions. Those students interested in applying for these positions will be given the appropriate information upon the return of the expression of interest. Parents are encouraged to apply on-line, however, paper application forms are available for those families who do not have internet access. Life Education Today saw the first of the 2013 Life Education lessons. The sessions aim to teach the students about healthy choices, human biology and related drug education issues. A parent session has been organised at 11:40 on Thursday 31st October. This is a great opportunity to discuss the content of the lessons and foster productive discussion at home about these very important issues. Parent Morning Tea After the success of the first parent morning tea, the second is fast approaching. On Wednesday November 6, the planned morning tea will give attendees an opportunity to meet and hear from the 2014 canteen manager as well as provide parents an opportunity to meet other parents, while being entertained by the school band. Please pencil in this relaxing morning onto your calendar. Winston Winners

STAGE 2 CAMP SYDNEY ACADEMY OF SPORTS
On Tuesday the 8th of October, 158 excited and eager Stage 2
students travelled to the Sydney Academy of Sports and
partook in a two day camp. The students had an amazing
time with their friends, group leaders and teachers. The
weather was fantastic and the environment was just amazing.
Let’s not forget our cabins and the joy of bunking with friends.
The students were immersed in a number of sporting activities
ranging from kayaking, rock climbing, archery and flying fox. We
were even able to fit in a games night.
For many of the students it was their first time away from their
parents. The camp allowed for students to make new friends,
have fun, achieve personal goals, try new things, overcome a
challenge and learn problem solving skills.
The Stage 2 students returned from their camp on Wednesday
afternoon, exhausted however more confident and looking
forward to their next camp experience.
I would like to thank all the Stage 2 students and teachers for
their participation and positive attitude. I would also like to thank
the parents for providing an opportunity for their children to
participate in such a worthwhile experience.

PARENT WORKING BEE Sunday, 20th October
Thank you to all the parents and students who generously gave hours of their time at the parent working bee last Sunday morning. Your hard work and dedication helped to give our garden beds a spring makeover and we now have clean and tidy gardens for our environmental teams to add mulch and native plants. David MacSporran
SCHOOL NEWS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Bush Tucker Garden and Outdoor Learning Area Opening As the smoke from bushfires in the west reminded us of our
stewardship of the Australian bush Mr Short, Ms Matthews, Clr
Bob Dwyer, Mr Steven Ross and Ms Bronwyn Purvis from
Parramatta Council as well as Auntie Kerri Kenton from the
Dharug community officially opened the new bush tucker
garden and outdoor learning area. This will be used by students
in years to come to enrich their environmental education and
build an appreciation for the way our indigenous community
manages the land in a sustainable way.
Auntie Kerri Kenton performed a Welcome to Country in her
language and speakers reminded the students of the strong
bond Aboriginal people have with the land. A journalist from the
Hills Shire Times recorded the ceremony for an article.
Kerri Kenton is an acclaimed artist and has kindly offered to
return to the school to assist students with an indigenous art
installation, as well as some lessons on the bush tucker garden
once it is established.

KA Ladybirds During Term 3 KA were learning about ‘Changes’. We looked at how much we have grown and
changed from when we were babies until now. We are very proud of all the things we have
achieved in our lives so far. We have discussed what we might look like in the future and the
kinds of jobs we might like to do.
When I grow up . . . .
