It is hard to believe that another year has passed and I really can’t believe everything that has happened throughout the year. We certainly hope that this year will be much better and we can all move on with our lives. We are finally making headway on putting a Midget back together. When I say we, I am referring to Hank and Rod. Without their help, the car would still be sitting on jack stands in garage. We have gotten the wiring harness together and are ready to put it back in the car. Rod and Hank painstakingly labeled everything and matched up all the wires to where they need to go. Hank also helped me put the proportioning valve in for the rear disc brakes. It is amazing how many times I’ve had to say to Hank and Rod “Well, that piece is at the house and I will bring it tomorrow.” Their combined knowledge of MGs and electrical wiring is absolutely amazing. I have no words that are good enough to describe how helpful the two of them have been and to Sharon, who every day, has made sure that we had a great lunch. Also to my loving and understanding Shirley for putting up with and supporting everything it is taking to put the Midget back together. Now, on a different note, we have noticed due to the current situation in the country that several of the clubs have decided to suspend their newsletter due to the lack of being able to do any group activities. We have decided to do the same. If this craziness ever stops and we can get back to a more normal routine, we will start doing the newsletter again. In the meantime, Lew will still continue to be the point of contact for communications with the club and I’m sure he will continue to send out informative emails the way he has in the past. Here’s to a better 2021 and that everyone stays safe and healthy. Dan and Shirley Daniel P. Johnson, PhD Creative Presentations [email protected] 316-641-1589

Hello Everyone!

It is amazing how many times I’ve

had to say to Hank and Rod “Well, that piece is at the house and I will bring it tomorrow.” Their combined knowledge of MGs and electrical wiring is absolutely amazing.

It's a 2 Midget Circus in Hank's Garage! Wiring MGs For Fun With Friends -

Ever feel like yanking it all out and starting fresh? Dan did. Dan's virtually new 1969 Midget is get-ting a shiny new wire bundle to make the car look & feel it's best with an unobstructed flow of elec-trons to all its new appliances & appurtenances.

There's no better place than Hank's garage with heaters and light to make work comfortable and keep all the volunteers happy. Below is Dan's dashboard, lying on the surgeon's table ready for painstaking replacement surgery.

Rod MacLean, Dan Johnson, and Hank Brillhart make a good team. It's always good when every-body speaks the same electrical language.

While Rod IDs the wires, Hank & Dan determine how and where to put a proportioning valve for rear disc brakes. Special flare tools are a must.

Knowledge of parts is kind of important, too: this socket for a light bulb, shown right, won't take anything but a lamp that has the contact wires sprung out of each side like little whiskers that get pushed into the sides of receptacle sort of like one of those infernal Christmas tree bulbs. Dan's Midget is getting closer every day! More when the engine is stuffed! Hank Brillhart

HARRY'S TRACK TALK The Celica is Replaced!

The1997 BMW M3 , has had the BMW engine, transmission and electrics removed. Replacements are Ford 351 Windsor V8 and Ford five speed and hand wired ("BMF" is rare all right - it's a BMW/Ford mashup - a Bavarian Motor Ford. I made it up; there is no such thing as a BMF! Some days the smart aleck in me doesn't know when to slow down.) My partner, Bill, picked this up at an estate sale for (I'm guessing here) well south of 25% of build cost. Only thing known about the builder, he is deceased. The car raced several years in the COMMA Series at Hallet Motorsport Circuit . We are finally getting off our butts and getting back on the prep wagon to get ready for a May race at Hallet. It came with a noisy lifter and noisy transmission. At the least we will install new camshaft, lifters & rebuilt transmission. That and a set of tires and this car is race ready. Bill made the mistake of letting me come up with the car and team name "BMW/Ford Mix". Meet 'Miss Cegenation', the replacement for the Celica!

THE RACE: May 15-May 16, 2021, HALLETT MOTOR RACING CIRCUIT, 8+7-Hour Enduro, Cleveland, Oklahoma for $1475, "Hallet" Early Pay Discount Ends: March 16, 2021

Champcar Racing is back in the Central States area! If we want to see them back in 2022, there needs to be a good turnout for this race. It's as affordable as one could ask, $1,275 if you register before March 16. And please don't tell me how bad the Champcar drivers are. We ran WRL at Hallett last Oct. Two cars rolled during Friday practice, another rolled during the races. I was clipped by a BMW passing me on the straight! I would have gone off track to give him any more room!

As some added incentive to race with Champcar in May at Hallett, here is a direct quote from Michael Chisek <[email protected]> "If we get good attendance at Hallet in 2021, I’ll look to add Heartland Park in 2022." Bill & I are registered (along with three USMC entries). We are looking to sell two seats. Haven't decided on a price yet, we are trying to get our 1997 M3 BMW prepped (Ford 351W/five speed). Worst case, we'll be back w/ the Celica.

No More Printed Haynes Manuals

December 30, 2020 Michael Carnell Articles, Corporate Business, Highlights, Restoration 1

We all have them. Heck, some of us have more than one. Some of us have multiple per model of car we own. Yes, I am talking about the ubiquitous Haynes workshop manual. But, in another sign that our hobby is continually changing, Haynes Publishing announced that it will cease printing all new manuals. New manuals will be available online only. Manuals that already exist will still be printed and published physically. But, who knows for how long?

In a statement, the company said: ‘We can confirm we’ve taken the commercial decision to

cease publishing any new printed Workshop Manuals.“ Haynes Publishing was founded by John Haynes in 1960 but was sold for a reported £114million earlier this year to French firm Infopro Digital after his death from a short illness. John Haynes was awarded an OBE for services to publishing in 1995, and in 2005 The Open University presented him with the honorary degree of Master of the University. He served as chairman of the Haynes Publishing Group until 2010 and continued in an active role as a director until his death.

More than 200 million manuals on 300 models of cars and 130 motorbike models have been sold to DIY enthusiasts who wanted to maintain and repair vehicles themselves for more than 50 years.

‘… we will continue to print and publish out extensive back catalogue of automotive and motorcycle titles.

In addition, we’re currently in the process of creating an exciting and comprehensive new automotive

Page 9: The Wing & Bonnet - douglas photo

P a g e | 9

maintenance and repair product that will cover around 95 percent of car makes and models – an increase of around 40 percent over our current Workshop Manual coverage.

This will provide consumers with more choice than ever before. More details will be provided in due course.’

Far from it being the end of the road for Haynes, the company is about to embark on an exciting new journey.

Statement from Haynes Publishing

The very first Haynes manual was published in 1965 for the Austin Healey Sprite, while Terry Davey’s iconic cutaway drawings became a feature of the publication in 1972. They even produced a coloring book featured the famed automotive cutaways.

Over the years, in addition to their line of straight-forward publications, Haynes has also produced manuals forfictional vehicles, including the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, the Doc Brown’s DeLorean time machine from Back To The Future, and the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. The company also has a large list of non-motoring, non-repair-manual titles in several categories including animal care, cooking, model railways , and history . Some of these alternative categories are of great entertainment value, such as the Haynes Explains: Sex Owners’ Manual and the Haynes Explains: Teenagers . I mean, is there really any explaining teenagers? There is even a Haynes Explains Marriage which covers such topics as pillow torque, routine maintenance, spare tires, and handling. Nope, I am not even going to touch that one.

With the rise in use of digital readers from Kindles to iPads, and the increasing complexity and lack of ability to repair more modern cars at home, I can’t say I am surprised by this move on the company’s part. I will admit to even having a few of my go-to manuals available on my iPhone or iPad so that they are always available on the fly. But, I treasure my paper copies far more – greasy fingerprints and all. There is just something immensely satisfying about having that manual open on the fender or floorboard while attempting a tricky repair. So buy up those physical copies while you can folks, and don’t forget … “refitting is the reverse of removal.”

BOTTOM LINE: If you see a Haynes Manual for sale, BUY IT. Rod MacLean says you can still get them online and download them, but….

TIRES! They had a good idea back then.

You can almost HEAR those treads shown above crunching through the frosty white stuff.

The tires they had in the early days were almost like tank treads, but they got you through the drifts, over th' river, and through th' woods…….until you high-centered that sucker on a taller-than-average snowbank!

Just a suggestion: should you and your girl, wife, significant other, or passle of kids heed the need to wander far afield into the snow country, don't forget to take survival supplies, like PB&J sandwiches, water, snacks, a small shovel, blanket, matches, etc. When you wander, you might end up chasing snowbanks and actually catch one. They'll be waiting for you. Be prepared for more than snuggling….
