The Cherry Point Naval Health Clinic hosted a chili cook off Dec. 18 to raise funds for the Combined Fed-eral Campaign.

The CFC is the only offi cially sanctioned fundraiser authorized by the Department of Defense for service members.

“Usually the CFC only runs through December, but with the government shut-down, it was pushed to Jan-uary,” said Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Rice, an operating room nurse and chair of the clinic’s CFC Committee.

Though lasting only several hours, the cook off at-tracted hundreds of guests and donations, said Rice.

“Going into the holidays our goal was to end strong

and beat what we raised last year,” he said. “And with this fi nal push we have far exceeded our goal.”

Guests sampled 12 entries in the cook-off, with Navy Lt. Elizabeth Angelo turning in her winning chocolate adobo recipe.

“I really don’t know how I won,” said Angelo. “I didn’t really follow any recipe and my own chili is too hot for me.”

The event was a great success with participation from many Cherry Point service members, said An-gelo.

“I really just wanted to support the CFC,” said An-gelo. “A lot of Marines and Sailors stopped by and helped out with the cause.”

Jingle on the left foot: Med Bn. runs to celebrate the holidays

LANCE CPL. SHAWN VALOSIN

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – “There are three things you need to know before we start. First, we’re going to have a pretty slow pace so we can stay together and have fun. Second, we’re running to the [2nd Marine Logistics Group] building, so we’re going to need people to ring the bell out front. Lastly, we’re running through the MLG building. Once we get in there we’re going to turn left … there’s a door that leads outside and I pray that it’s un-locked.”

Navy Capt. Michael Sokolows-ki, the commanding officer of 2nd Medical Battalion., Combat Logis-tics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Lo-gistics Group, addressed his Marines and Sailors gathered at Soiffert Field early in the morning Dec. 20, for one

last physical training session before the holiday break.

This wasn’t the usual PT Marines and Sailors are accustomed to, how-ever.

Service members wore Santa hats and tied bells to their left shoe so they could ring in the holiday together.

“My favorite part of the run was definitely getting to run through the MLG building,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Geoffrey A. Polizoti, the communications section chief for the battalion. “I would definitely like to do that again and maybe run through both levels of it.”

After the run, Sokolowski shared a few words with service members.

“Remember your shipmates over this holiday season, make sure they either have somewhere to go, or in-vite them to your home,” said So-kolowski.

Navy Capt. Michael Sokolowski, commanding officer of 2nd Medical Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, speaks to service members after a holiday run at Camp Lejeune Dec. 20. Sokolowski thanked the battalion’s Marines and Sailors, and encouraged them to take care of their shipmates during the upcoming holiday.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Assigned to the 1st Reindeer Division, Marine Corps Base North Pole, Gunny Claus visited local ser-vice members and their families to spread Christmas cheer at the USO of North Caro-lina Jacksonville Center, Dec. 14.

More than 300 service members and family shared their wish list with Gunny Claus in his patented Dress Reds during breakfast.

Since 2002, Gunny Claus has visited numerous Marine Corps installations, pro-viding comfort to children with deployed Marines and Sailors during the holiday sea-son.

“The Marine Corps is about family,” said Claus. “When I started doing this, I decided putting the uniform back on could display a familiar uniform and hopefully comfort the children. The most popular request I get is children asking for their mom or dad to come back from a deployment.”

Gunny Claus proudly wears his scarlet and white uniform, signifying the colors of his civilian counterpart, Santa Claus. His chest displays medals signifying wars Ma-rines have fought during Christmas since 1918. Service stripes denote the years Ma-rines have been away from their families over the holidays.

“He does an amazing thing for the Ma-rines and their families during the holidays,” said Staff Sgt. Jose M. Nieves, Distribution Management Office staff noncommis-sioned officer-in-charge with Headquarters and Support Battalion. “He’s a Marine, and he takes care of us like any fellow Marine would. He does nothing short of bring joy to the military community during the holi-days.”

Gunny Claus has already visited more than 11,000 children this year.

“My kids are excited to see Gunny Claus,” said Nieves. “The family-friendly environ-ment brings all of us closer together during the holidays. It’s good to see Marines help-ing each other out.”

Gunny Claus and the 1st Reindeer Divi-sion’s goal is to support the many children of service members serving overseas. Some children visiting Gunny Claus even de-clared him cooler than Santa, promising to visit him every year.

“Marines are family to one another,” said

Gunny Claus. “This is my way of serving the community. Seeing the smile on the children’s faces makes it all worth it.”

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. – The Marine Corps has received an “unqualified,” or favorable, opinion on a recently completed independent audit of its FY 2012 Schedule of Budgetary Activity by the Department of Defense Inspector General.

The inspector general rendered the opinion Dec. 20, 2013, as part of the mandate by

Congress for the Department of Defense to produce fully audited financial statements by 2017.

An unqualified opinion is the gold standard for audit opinions and is granted only when the auditors have reasonable assurance that the statement fairly presents the budget activity for the reporting period in all material respects.

The Marine Corps is the first military service to undergo this type of audit.A favorable opinion is an important step in audit readiness for the Department of De-

fense.“This year’s financial report demonstrates our dedication to assure the public that we are

efficient and prudent stewards of the nation’s resources entrusted to us,” said Ann-Cecile M. McDermott, fiscal director for the Marine Corps.

The report did, however, identify weaknesses for the Marine Corps to correct in order to improve its financial management, and many of these initiatives are already underway.

“We may have done well on the first one, but we have to repeat this,” said Lt. Col. Jared Hansbrough, deputy of the accounting branch at Headquarters Marine Corps. “We’re happy to be where we are, but we recognize we have a lot of work to do as we move for-ward.”

Marines, their weapons and equipment account for only 8.2 percent of the total Depart-ment of Defense FY 2012 budget, but that still delivers the ability to respond to crises – from humanitarian-assistance and disaster-relief efforts to noncombatant evacuation op-erations to counter-piracy operations, as well as full-scale combat.

“The outstanding results of the FY12 financial statement audit demonstrate the Marine Corps’ commitment to improving our stewardship of the scarce resources entrusted to us by the American people,” said Gen. James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps.

“We are the first service to have successfully completed this congressionally mandated audit. I could not be more proud of our entire team ... Bravo Zulu!”

NASCAR has sent Sprint Cup teams the specifications for 2014 race cars. They include changes to the bodies of the cars — changes designed to bring about more competitive racing on the intermediate, 1.5-mile race tracks.

The new rules include a square lead-ing edge on the splitter, side skirt and rear fascia adjustments, an 8-inch rear spoiler, and a 43-inch-by-13-inch radia-tor pan, according to a release from NASCAR. Also, there will be no more pre- and post-race checks of the heights of the fronts of the cars.

Donnie Wingo, crew chief of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford, said the new package, which was developed through two tests at Charlotte Motor Speedway, should make the cars more stable and therefore more comfortable for drivers. And he said that under the new rules, there should be more air getting to the car or cars trailing the leader, which should eliminate the aero-push that hinders a trailing car as it tries to over-take the leader.

Wingo said the square-edged splitter represents a return to the splitter used in earlier seasons, and that the changes should not require a lot of work or expense on the part of race teams.

“It’s mostly bolt-on parts,” he said. “And they bolt on to the same mounting positions as the parts on the 2013 cars.”

Wingo pointed out that while the package seemed to be a step in the right direction, the full result won’t be known until it’s tried in actual racing con-ditions.

“We learned more in the second test because there were 30 cars on the track the second time, and just six in the first session,” he said. “But it’s

still kind of a trial-and-error deal.”Some in the sport had expected a move to reduce

horsepower in the engines, but that isn’t likely to happen before the 2015 season, according to Gene Stefanyshyn, NASCAR’s vice president of innova-tion and racing development.

“This is definitely something that we are enter-taining for ’15, but we want to take a more holistic approach to when we solve it,” he said. “We’d like to be able to do perhaps three things at once, and we think come up with a more robust solution that can serve us better in the longer run. So this is something I think we are going to definitely look at for ’15.”

NASCAR family trees keep growing

Kyle Petty is a grandfather, and Richard Petty has another great-grandson.

Austin and Sarah Petty named their son Adam after Austin’s brother, the late Adam Petty, who died in a crash at New HampshireMotor Speedway in 2000.

Add David Ragan to the list of Sprint Cup drivers who are moving into parenthood. Ragan his wife of one year, Jacquelyn, are due to have a child next summer.

Billy Scott named crew chief at MWR

Billy Scott has been named crew chief of the No. 55 Toyota at Michael Waltrip Racing.

Scott, who will work with driver Brian Vickers, began his NASCAR career as a mechanic in the Truck Series and returned to college to get an engineering degree. He’s been the lead engineer for the No. 55 team for the past two seasons.

“I’m honored, but I also know this is a big responsibility,” Scott said in a team release. “Brian has been incredible to work with and is a winner, so we can’t wait to get 2014 started.”

Vickers is set to return to the seat of the No. 55 Toyota after being sidelined for the final five races of 2013 because of blood clots.

Townley moves to Wauters Motorsports for 2014

Camping World Truck Series driver John Wes Townley has moved from Red Horse Racing to Wauters Motorsports, where he will drive the No. 5 Toyota.

Team owner Richie Wauters said Townley showed improvement in late 2012 and in the 2013 season, and he expects more of the same.

“He has made significant gains in his NASCAR career, and we feel this is the right fit for him this season,” said Wauters, who as a crew chief found great success while teamed with Kyle Busch. “We expect to have John Wes in the top-5 in points and, hope-fully, bring home some wins.”

The Truck Series opens its season at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 21.

On the morning — or afternoon — before every major NASCAR race, the top drivers participate in meet-and-greet sessions with fans at hospital-ity villages set up on speedway property. Most of those fans who get to attend do so as

guests of a driver’s sponsor, and the crowds are relatively small compared to a driver’s fan base. The driver typically offers opening remarks, then fields questions from the audience before signing some autographs and moving on to the next appearance. In many cases, the answers given in the low-

at Richard Childress Racing, is considered one of the circuit’s best at explaining his profession.Since he’s known as the “Rocket Man” for his

performances on pole day, which include 51 career poles in the Sprint Cup Series, 12 in the Nationwide Series and one in the Camping World Truck Series, he’s often asked what it feels like to drive really fast. His initial answer usually brings smiles to the

faces of those in his audience.“From 140 miles an hour on up, it all feels the

same,” he said. “When you take off in an air-plane, you’re usually leaving the ground at about 120 miles an hour.“You can feel the speed up to 120, but from that point on,

you can feel it accelerate a little bit, but you don’t realize you’re going 600 miles per hour, or 500 miles per hour or 350.“You don’t have the acceleration to feel the speed, and

that’s the same feeling in a race car.”Newman explains that in a race car, the faster one goes,

the better the car reacts to the speed.“When you leave pit road and get halfway up to speed,

the rest of it is just a matter of the faster you go, the better the car sticks, because you have more downforce,” he said, quickly adding that there comes a point when the down-force isn’t enough to keep the car sticking to the track.“The tires want to slide, so there’s a happy medium in

there that we all try to hit as drivers,” he said. Then there’s the issue of something happening at extreme

speed, which is where the danger factor kicks in.“When you’re going 200 [miles per hour] and you hit some-

thing or a tire blows or whatever, it’s going to be compound-ed by the next hit and the hit after that and who comes up and hits you at 200 while you’re sitting still,” he said. “Going 200 miles an hour doesn’t mean anything as long as the guy next to you is going 200 miles an hour.“It’s the difference in speed that makes a difference. That

closing rate is like being in rush-hour traffic. If you’re all

going the same speed, there’s really no difference. It’s when somebody checks up and you have to get on the binders [brakes] because you weren’t paying attention, that’s when there’s a difference.”Newman said the sensation of speed depends a lot on the

circumstances, such as the type of car he’s driving or the length and shape of the track he’s on.“If you’re at Michigan, where it’s a little more wide open,

it’s one thing,” he said. “And if you have a tire that kind of locks you in to the race track, that’s one thing. But like at Atlanta, when you’re going almost 200 miles per hour, you’re almost in a controlled slide. That’s good because you’re controlled, but you’re still sliding.“It’s part of what we do in taking race cars to the edge, but

ultimately it’s whoever is sliding the least that’s leading.”And he said that the speeds he feels in a Sprint Cup car

sometimes seem mild compared to those he attained in smaller, open-wheeled cars earlier in his career.“Running a Midget at 140 miles per hour average at Pikes

Peak [International Raceway] with open wheels and a little four-cylinder car, I think that kind of gets you prepped for a lot of things,” he said. “Silver Crown cars would run 185 at the end of the straightaway at Gateway [Motorsports Park], which was clipping right along for that type of car.“So 200 in a full-fendered [Sprint Cup] car with a lot of

downforce isn’t such a big deal. The weight [of the Cup car] kinds of works to your advantage because you can feel it moving around.”

The recently announced changes to the rules for induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame likely will result in more modern-era drivers being inducted and could see some of the sport’s pioneers shuffled aside.

Under the new rules, drivers who have competed for a minimum of 10 years and have reached their 55th birthday on or before Dec. 31 of the year prior to the nominating year are immediately eligible for induction. And any competitor who has raced for 30 or more years is eligible, regardless of age, and continuing to race after reaching the Hall threshold won’t prevent them from being nominated or inducted.

That change means that Mark Martin, Bill Elliott and Terry Labonte, who have been running partial Cup schedules, are now eligible to be inducted, whereas before the new rules, they’d have to be retired for three years to be considered.

But putting popular drivers like Elliott, Martin and Labonte on the ballot now could mean that a driver, such as the late Joe Weatherly, who had 25 Cup wins and was the two-time and defending Series champion when he died in a racing crash at Riverside, Calif., in 1964, could be overlooked

again by the selection committee. And the late Raymond Parks, who won the first Cup car own-er’s title and played a key role in the formation of NASCAR, would have little chance of garnering more votes than someone like Elliott, Labonte or Martin.

The number of nominees each year is being reduced from 25 to 20, which also has the potential to leave out pioneers not as well known to today’s voting panel.

Other changes include the for-mation of a Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR, which will go to either a competitor or those who work with tracks, teams, sponsors, media or as an ambassador for the sport. And the current Sprint Cup champion will be added to the voting panel each year.

James Finch, who sold his Phoenix Racing team last year, and Bobby Labonte, who lost his ride with JTG Daugherty Racing, are back in the Sprint Cup business, beginning with the Daytona 500.

Phoenix Racing’s new owner, Harry Scott Jr., announced last week that Labonte will drive a sec-ond car for the team in the 500 on Feb. 23, 2014, and that Finch will be a part of the effort.

“James continues to be a valuable part of our team, and when he came up with the idea of running Bobby in a second car, I jumped at the opportunity to bring him back into the fold,” Scott said in a team release. “Bobby is a veteran driver that can also provide valuable insight and leadership for Phoenix Racing.”

Finch said he was glad to be returning to a race where his cars typically contend for the win despite his team’s underdog status.

“I’m thrilled to be headed back to Daytona with Bobby Labonte,” Finch said. “I thank Harry Scott for this oppor-tunity. He knew I would have to be weaned off racing. I can’t quit cold turkey.”

Labonte, who ran 14 races for Phoenix in 2010 and one last year, is expected to run several more for Phoenix next season.

Details about the car number, crew chief and sponsors for Labonte’s car have not been announced.

MARINE CORPS BASE, Hawaii - Ma-rine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 commemorated its 70th anniversary in the Marine Corps at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Dec. 2. Throughout the week, HMLA-367 held several events for the “Scarface” alumni.

The squadron activated as Marine Ob-servation Squadron 351 on Dec. 1, 1943 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. After service in the Pacific Theater during World War II, VMO-351 deactivated Aug. 20, 1949. The unit reactivated Aug. 1, 1966,

at Camp Pendleton for service in Vietnam. Nearly two years later, VMO-3, re-desig-nated as Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, deployed immediately in support of ground operations in Vietnam.

Events for the commemoration included a cake cutting ceremony, golf tournament on the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course and a tour of the Scarface hangar. Current and former HMLA 367 Marines shared stories and recalled Squadron history.

The unit also coordinated a flight over the USS Missouri and the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor for Scarface alumni, veterans and community members

in the area. Before the cake cutting ceremony, Ma-

rines and Sailors formed for a promotion ceremony for one Sailor and five Ma-rines.

Scarface veterans attended the cake cutting and promotion ceremony. Calvin Dorn, a Scarface pilot from 1980 to 1987, stood in as the oldest Marine of the squad-ron during the ceremony.

“They wanted to have one of the alumni be a part of the cake cutting ceremony,” Dorn said. “They asked me and I said, ‘sure.’ It was definitely an honor to be a part of it all.”

Concluding the ceremony, Marines and Sailors lined up to celebrate with alumni while others took photos with family and friends in front of an American flag draped between an AH-1W Super Cobra helicop-ter and UH-1Y Huey helicopter.

“It was a unique situation as Scarface prepared to celebrate its 70th anniversary,” said 1st Lt. Anthony T. Ciochetto, a Huey pilot with the squadron. “The stars kind of aligned and we couldn’t think of any better way than to invite some veterans to Ha-waii to celebrate the occasion with us.”

On Dec. 4, the squadron gave the veter-ans a full tour of the Scarface hangar, per-forming a bayside landing outside the han-gar for the veterans to see the aircraft in action. For many, it was the first time see-ing the squadron again since they served with the unit.

“The whole celebration essentially re-volved around the alumni being here,” Ciochetto explained. “It’s always a learn-ing experience when you get to talk to vet-erans and hear their stories, and it’s even better when you get to talk to some of the guys who helped shape the unit into what it is today.”

The unit coordinated for several helicop-ters to conduct a flyover of Pearl Harbor the following day while some alumni and other veterans stood aboard the USS Mis-souri. On the battleship, guests watched as four helicopters flew across the sky while donning an American flag.

The aircraft flew over the harbor three times before returning to Kaneohe Bay to wrap up the celebration with a luau at the Officers’ Club, complete with traditional Hawaiian food.

“The camaraderie is the exact same as it was in the Cold War days, and I’m amazed to see how much it has grown since then,” Dorn said. “I truly am proud to have served in this squadron.”

DJIBOUTI, Djibouti - Djibouti, Africa con-tains a population of approximately 700,000, vulnerable to famine, drought and conflict in the neighboring countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. Yet, everyday, hundreds risk their lives escaping violence and poverty to seek refuge in the more peaceful and politically stable environ-ment in the Horn of Africa. This is due in part to U.S. and international forces, like Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa at Camp Lemonnier, which builds and strengthens international part-nerships to further enhance security and stability in the region.

Thousands of refugees in the Republic of Dji-bouti are orphaned children. Only a small frac-tion of them fall into the devoted care of someone like Father John, who runs a shelter in the city and welcomed Marines and Sailors deployed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to visit with the children for a few hours at his shelter, Nov. 16.

Father John said the shelter receives pleasant visits from many international forces personnel who seek selfless service and life experience at the shelter.

The shelter is run by Caritas, an international, non-government organization, which aims to pro-vide healthcare and promote education for home-less children. The organization also tackles issues

relating to women and works to provide medical care to expecting mothers.

“Caritas [exists] to welcome street children,” Father John said.

“When they come here, they spend three years at the shelter and go on to the local primary school to continue to learn how to write, to read and to count.”

Marines and Sailors spent time teaching the children the English alphabet and how to spell various words that started with each letter. Ma-rines and Sailors then participated in a spirited soccer match with the children in the shelter’s courtyard.

“It sends a message to the community that we are their friends and that when Sailors and Ma-rines come into their country we represent the goodness of America and we represent the idea that America cares about all people,” said. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Darren Stennett, 13th MEU chaplain.

Stennett partnered with Navy volunteers from the Camp Lemonnier Chapel program to coordi-nate the visit. Project Hand Clasp also provided school, medical and recreational supplies to the shelter.

“It’s good for the Marines and Sailors to get out and see the community,” Stennett said. “I think it’s good for our Sailors and Marines to under-stand what it is like in the rest of the world. It broadens them as Sailors and Marines.”
