An Acts 8 Moment

Dear Friends,

As the secular calendar turns to March, the liturgical calendar brings us to the season of Lent.

Lent, as you may know, comes to us from the Old English word for the lengthening of days.

Spring is coming, or rather it seems to already be here, and in the church, we mark that time

by being intentional about our relationships with God.

For many people, that intentionality involves giving something up. Chocolate seems to be a favorite fast during this

season. I suppose it is so we don’t feel so badly when the Easter Bunny brings our children (and us) all those decadent

treats. Other folks will give up alcohol, swearing, or social media in an attempt to get right with God, but if I’m honest,

over the years, I’ve had a really hard time with the “giving things up” for Lent practice. My thought is, if it is good for

me to give this up for 40 days, shouldn’t I just give it up for ever? As a result, one year, I gave up Lent for Lent.

I’m much more a fan of taking something on. Lent brings with it myriad opportunities for spiritual growth. There are

dozens of daily devotionals that would be happy to find their way into your inbox. You might purchase a Gregorian

Chant CD to listen to on your way to work or subscribe to a new podcast to listen to over lunch. The Centering Prayer

Community will be offering a Quiet Day on Saturday, March 4th, during which you can learn about several different

spiritual practices that will no doubt deepen your relationship with God during this holy season.

Any and all of these practices will prove helpful in your relationship with God, and I hope you will find what works for

you, but I will also ask that you take on one particular challenge that isn’t merely about developing your own personal

relationship with God, but about helping Christ Episcopal Church collectively deepen our awareness of God’s call in our

community. This Lent, during the four weeks between Ash Wednesday and Spring Break for Bowling Green City and

Warren County Schools, I will be leading a LOFT series called “An Acts 8 Moment: How God does the impossible

through his servants.” As you may have guessed, we will focus our attention on the eighth chapter of the Acts of the

Apostles and its surrounding, looking at how God did some really amazing work through a small group of willing

helpers.

Our time together will be part lecture, part Bible study, and part table conversations.

We will learn about the early Church in 1st century Jerusalem as well as learning

about Christ Episcopal Church in 21st century Bowling Green. We will pray, think,

discuss, and dream about how we might be called to be the ordinary folk through

whom God changes the world. Laura Goodwin will have a program for our kids that

includes art, story, and music, while Kellie Mysinger and Karen Crabtree will lead

Confirmation classes for our youth. Plan to make your reservations for LOFT in Lent

From The Senior Warden — Laura Cohron

Hello! I’m Laura Cohron, and I’ve been elected to serve as Senior

Warden for the Vestry in 2017. I’m honored to accept this

responsibility and look forward to a successful year at Christ Church

in collaboration with our awesome Vestry.

We’re blessed to have welcomed Fr. Steve Pankey and his family to

Bowling Green in January. We’re off to a great start with his

leadership and hope to observe a holy Lent and joyful Easter

together.

I believe I’ve seen a renewed energy and excitement at Christ Church

in recent weeks and hope that you all are feeling the same. Hopefully

there’s a service, ministry, or group that meets your needs and allows

you to plug in to our community. As we proceed through 2017,

please do not hesitate to let me or any of your Vestry members know

how we might serve you.

From The Junior Warden — John Parker

In the Episcopal Church the junior warden is responsible for the upkeep of parish buildings

and grounds. This month I’d like to write about some of my favorite plants now blooming

on the church grounds.

The large flowering shrub outside the Chapel and at the

entrance to Surface Hall is the plant that I am most often

asked to identify. If you’ve used that entrance in the

past couple of weeks, you were greeted by the strong fragrance of the

daphne ‘Carol Mackie.’ Its variegated evergreen leaves make it attractive

all year, but it’s in its glory in the early spring with its sublime aroma. If

you wish to try one at home, you will probably need to ask a nursery to

order it for you, order on-line, or visit a nursery in Louisville or Nashville.

Plant daphne in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Be

forewarned that they are not easy to get established, and resent being

moved.

The small shrub now in bloom all over the church grounds is helleborus

orientalis. They come in a range of colors, from white to purple, typically

maturing to green. They self-sow their cross-pollinated seeds with

abandon, producing flowers in new shades. They are low- maintenance

and easy to transplant, and thrive in sun or shade. Because they bloom

very early, they are commonly called “winter rose”, “Christmas rose,” and

“Lenten rose”, but hellebores are not closely related to the rose family.

exploration of both new and ancient spiritual

disciplines. Our format will be three

meditations or reflections, offered by the

Reverend Kellie Mysinger, Dr. Ken Casey,

and the Reverend Steve Pankey.

Between the three meditations there will be

two small group sessions where you will have

the opportunity to learn more about different

spiritual disciplines. You will be able to

choose two from the following list:

Eucharist, the K & 1st grade Godly Play Sunday

School Class will be led by Father Steve on a tour of

the Sacristy, Altar, Chancel, and Nave.

The tour will begin promptly at 9:00am and

attendance is encouraged. Children should report, as

usual, to their Sunday School classroom in the Linder

Education Building.

The Montessori Inspired Play Group is a bi-monthly play

date for littles to enjoy sensory exploration and Montessori

-themed play. It occurs on the second and fourth

Thursdays of the month from 9:30-11:30am in Surface

Hall. For March, the Montessori Inspired Play Group will

meet on Thursdays, March 9 and March 23.

Youth Confirmation Class — St. George Room

Registration for Youth Confirmation Class is now being accepted. The Reverend Kellie Mysinger and Karen

Crabtree will be leading classes during the Wednesday evening LOFT sessions for interested youth in grades

8-12 who “express a mature commitment to Christ” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 412). Preparation for

Confirmation should help the candidates discover the meaning of Christian commitment in their lives, and

explore ways that their Christian commitment can be lived. Please contact Laura Goodwin

Getting ready for the mystery of Easter takes time. Join us on Wednesday evenings during LOFT as the

children have choir practice with Brittany Whitlow from 6:00-6:30pm. Also, create glass art with local artist

and parishioner Elizabeth Rhodes and learn about the Easter story with Laurie Joyce from 6:30-7:00pm. The

Children’s Class is led by Laura Goodwin and Linda Mitchell. Children K-5th grade are encouraged to

attend. A nursery is provided for children under 5.

For several weeks, The Bread of Angels Class will explore some thoughts on Biblical literalism and

explore the idea that perhaps the New Testament is, in many ways, a parallel to the Old Testament. All

are invited to come along on this theological adventure. We meet in St George Room on Sunday

mornings at 9:00am and we would like to see you there.

Psalms Class – Cates Lounge – each Sunday except the first Sunday of the month.

Praying the Psalms — Any prayer that you need to pray can be found in the rich tradition of the Psalms.

Praying the Psalms sets out to study and meditate on the Psalms as a stimulus to our own prayer life. The

class focuses on the Psalm selected in the Lectionary for that Sunday asking two questions—1) What did

it mean in ancient contexts? 2) What does it mean for us today? If you want to grow in prayer, and in

understanding of the Psalter, this class could be for you.

Guild News The Guild would like to thank all those volunteers who supported the recent Bake

Sale. Whether you provided items for sale, purchased items, or both, your help

was needed and so appreciated. Our funds will go first to create and publish the new

cookbook and second, go toward other ministries.

Help Wanted — The Cookbook Committee is seeking CEC members who could help

with computer input of recipes. We have an established account with passwords that

The Brotherhood of St Andrew invites all men and youth of

Christ Church to join us in service to the church and to the

community.

We meet on the first and third Saturdays of each month in the

Conference Room at 8:00am for fellowship and sharing a

reflection on Sunday’s Gospel reading.

Our next meetings will be Saturday, March 4 and March 18.

Living Waters For The World

Living Waters for the World (LWW) Mission Trip 2018

Lots of planning has been happening behind the scenes for the mission trip to install a water purification

system in the community of Santo Thomas in Peru. The LWW mission team of Christ Episcopal Church

parishioners includes: John Parker, Gary Reimer, Digby Palmer, Belinda Palmer, Clayton Palmer, Laurie

Joyce, Andrew Joyce, and Laura Goodwin. In February, the group met with a LWW team at Westminster

Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, which has installed 7 systems in the Peruvian Amazon. They have

also installed several systems in rural areas of East Tennessee. The meeting was very informative and

productive with many insights and ideas, which will prove helpful in the planning of our 2018 installation.

The CEC LWW mission team plans to travel to Peru and install a water system in the community of Santo

Thomas, on the Rio Orosa (Orosa River), a tributary of the Amazon River. It will be installed in a medical

clinic run by an organization called Project Amazonus. The community has a primary school with

approximately 40 students enrolled. It is a single room structure with one teacher. Subsistence agriculture

(slash and burn), fishing, and hunting provide most of the food for the community. Inhabitants do not hold

individual titles to any land, but the community through a communal title owns the land collectively. The

water system will service 10 surrounding communities.

Currently there is no potable water supply. There is a rainwater collection tank at the school, but otherwise

none. Most of the population collects water directly from the river or harvests rainwater from galvanized

roof surfaces. The need for clean water is great as water-borne illness is rampant.

Living Waters for the World is a “global outreach ministry...that trains and equips mission teams to share the

gift of clean water treatment systems with communities in need. The water treatment systems and related

educational programs fill a critical niche in the world water crisis—helping communities with available but

contaminated water to obtain a clean water supply.”

The CEC LWW mission team is planning to travel to Peru in January of 2018 to install a water system (that

can be seen in Surface Hall). We need lots of support in order to make this goal a reality!

Christ Church is responsible for M.E.A.L.S., INC on Saturday, March

25. We have a wonderful group of parishioners who help, but we can

always use new faces. We sort bread, make goodie bags, dish up

food, and deliver food to grateful people. If interested, contact Kathy

M.E.A.L.S., INC is a faith-based, non-profit organization which

unites local churches in the mission of preparing, packaging, and

delivering hot meals to feed the hungry in our community. A

network of churches, including Christ Episcopal Church, serves on a

rotational basis to meet this need each weekend.
