Wilson Elementary School
The Principal’s Corner . . .
In a recent article, “Mapping the
Early Attendance Gap: Charting a
Course for Student Success”, it says
that across the country an estimated 5
million to 7.5 million students are miss-
ing nearly a month of school and suffer
academically because of it. At Wilson
Elementary School, student success is
always foremost in all that is done. If
students are not successful, it is the job
of everyone—parents, teachers, coun-
selors, administrators, and other school
staff—to determine what can be done
to help.
In order to improve attendance,
there are times when school staff will
call to check on students who have
missed several days. During these
calls, there are times when a plan can
be developed to help support the stu-
dent’s health needs at school. Wilson
Elementary has the good fortune of
having a registered nurse on staff, so
many health needs can be met while
your child attends school. There is
also the option of having your child
take a rest break for a short period of
time. This definitely helps your child
participate in some of the classroom
instruction while still meeting the need
to rest periodically.
The calls can also serve to help
school staff understand if your child is
expressing a problem that is happening

in school. Please do not hesitate to
make a contact to let someone know
if this is the case. All children should
be able to come to school and feel
safe and respected.
Good school attendance is
important to student success. In or-
der for students to gain the needed
skills, they must be present to par-
ticipate in the instruction which takes
place in the classroom each day.
Please work to help your child be in
school prior to 8:10 and stay for the
full day (until 3:00). As much as
possible, please arrange appoint-
ments for after school hours.
Together we can support
success for all students at Wilson
Elementary School.

Thank you for sending notes to school when your child
has been absent. We must have a note from parent,
phone call, or doctor note to excuse the absence. If you
know that you will be going away, please send in the note
so that a prior arrangement is made and the absence can
be excused.
It is school board policy that an attendance conference
must be held if a child has five or more unexcused ab-
sences or ten absences of any kind.
Thank you for making your child’s school attendance a
priority. It will pay great dividends throughout your child’s
school career and as your child enters the workforce.

Be a Learner!
Reminder to all parents:
Parent drop-off in the morning is in the back of the
building. Please be sure to park in the center if you are
walking your child into the building, or you may drive
through and an adult will watch your child exit the vehicle
and go into the building.
**Please pull up to the end of the building so that a long
line does not form, do not leave spaces between the ve-
hicles and wait until the car in front of you pulls ahead
before you try to leave. Our goal is to have no passing
in this line.
December and January are busy months for 2nd
grad-
ers! We are so proud of our students' performance in
“Melton, the Warm-Hearted Snowman." Thank you
for helping them prepare at home! In December, stu-
dents will also participate in a school wide cookie
decorating event as a reward for their great choices.
Please let your child's teacher know if you would like
to send in icing or sprinkles for decorating!
When we return from Winter break, we will jump right
back in to our normal routines. In Reading students
will work to locate information in their text to answer
questions. We will also review characters and setting
with familiar stories and poems.
In Social Studies we will begin our Famous Americans
unit. The children will learn about the contributions of
Christopher Columbus, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham
Lincoln, George Washington Carver, Helen Keller,
Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Ce-
sar Chavez, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Part of our
reading time will be spent researching and writing
about these famous Americans.
In Math we will begin our measurement unit. Students
will work to measure length, weight, and volume. This
is a fun unit with many hands-on activities!
During the Winter months, we will continue to have
outside recess. Please be sure to send your child with
a jacket each day!
Thank you for your continued support! We appreciate
all you do to ensure a successful year for your 2nd
grader!
Lost and Found Since September a multitude of sweaters, jackets, hoods, coats, etc. accumulated in the lost and found. They get folded and put on the lost and found table at the front entrance. Once or twice a week the table is moved where the students walk in from the buses and then put near the cafeteria door. Some are claimed because of this, but many are left unclaimed and are taken to Goodwill af-ter six to nine weeks of being in lost and found. These items accumulate mostly when we have a cold morning and a warm afternoon. Students go outside and leave them behind when they come in. They are collected after buses leave and taken to lost and found. Tags are checked for names, but very few have had names written in them. It will help get outerwear returned if your child’s first and last name would be written on the tag. Some even have a place to write the name. Please help us decrease the number of items left in lost and found by using a Sharpie and writing your child’s name on the inside tag. Winter won’t be as bad for lost and found...but spring will be here soon!

Happy Holidays from the fourth grade team! In Math, we are finishing up multi-digit multiplication.
Please encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts, as this will help them in the process of
understanding and demonstrating multiplication. Geometric representations and transformations will fol-
low when we get back from break. In Reading, we are working on poetry and will begin working with
Nonfiction text when we return from break. Social Studies is focusing on Jamestown and in Science, we
will be learning about planets. In writing, we will be creating stories about snowmen that come to life at
night. Thank you for your continued support and hard work at home in making this an awesome year in
4th grade! Remember to send your students with coats for recess, as winter is quickly approaching!
Happy Winter! Third graders have been very busy reviewing for the county wide reading and math benchmark tests which we will give the week of December 11-15th. Students have been working hard on their math and reading skills in preparation for these tests. In January, we will be finishing & reviewing our graphing and probability units in math and we will move on to place value with 6 digit numbers. In reading we will continue to work on inferencing, predicting, summarizing, main idea, and fluency. Please continue to make sure your child is read-ing at home each evening! We go outside for recess if the temperature is above freezing! Please make sure your child has a warm coat and hat when they come to school.
Our school has been selected by the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic (ARDC) to participate in the ORCAS (Outreach, Resources, Care and Prevention, Assessments and Sealants) children’s school based dental program on Mon-day, February 5th, 2018. Participants will receive x-rays, examination and, where applicable fluoride treatment and seal-ants. All procedures will be performed by an ARDC staff dentist and dental assistants at our school. This examination will determine if further preventive and/or restorative dental work is appropriate. If your child is found to be in need of services, additional information will be sent to you. The ARDC is a “Smiles for Children” dental provider (Medicaid, Famis, Famis
Plus, Opitma & Virginia Premier). This is a FREE service regardless if your child is insured or uninsured.
My child/children are enrolled in the “Smiles for Children” dental program (Medicaid, Famis, Famis Plus, Optima & Virginia Premier).
