The grand opening of The Westin Resort Guam on February 20, 1997 ush-

ered in 432 modern guest rooms and luxurious suites outfitted with smart interiors and executive fur-nishings, along with a host of fresh banquet and dining options for the island.

Since its grand opening, The Westin Resort Guam has merited a reputation for providing award-winning service and experience, raking acknowledgements for “Best Hotel on Guam” (Pika’s Best of Guam 2016), “Guam’s Best Ho-tel” (Stars & Stripes Best of Pacific 2016), “Guam’s Leading Resort” and “Guam’s Leading Spa Resort” (Annual World Travel Awards 2014 & 2015) and many others over the years.

A New Journey

When the opportunity to purchase The Westin Resort Guam from Leo Palace became a possibil-ity, South Korean com-pany Haevichi Hotels and Resorts Co., Ltd. took strides to quickly secure a deal. The company, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, had been eyeing Guam as a potential location for its first overseas investment, deeming the island a good invest-ment opportunity owing to the re-cord-breaking tourism arrivals and steady growth of the Korean market

Guam has recorded in recent years. In May 2016, an official announce-ment was made that Haevichi Ho-tels and Resorts had purchased The Westin Resort Guam from Leo Pal-ace Guam Corporation on April 22, 2016.

While there are no overt signs that ownership of The Westin Re-sort Guam has changed, major plans for improving the resort hotel are being developed to stay com-petitive.

“The hotel has a great policy, great brand, and great people. We were voted Best Hotel and we want to keep that title so we plan to invest money to improve the physical con-dition of the hotel,” said Beom-Seok Oh, President of Haevichi Hospital-ity Guam, Inc.

Haevichi Hospitality Guam, Inc. also plans to improve em-

ployee benefits and ini-tiate enrichment activi-ties such as an employee exchange program between The Westin Resort Guam and Hae-vichi’s luxury hotels in Seoul and Jeju Island.

“We have good peo-ple working here and we want to keep them. An

employee exchange pro-gram between Guam and our hotels in Korea would be a good opportu-nity for employees to understand each other and work in different sit-uations and circumstances, which will enhance their working skills,” said Oh.

The Path Forward

Investing in employee train-ing and well-being is also top priority for The Westin Re-

sort Guam General Manager Harri-son Cho, who has been the resort’s team leader since July 2015.

“How to maintain consistency and minimize deviations – these have always been the biggest challenges in the industry. Even the best employees make mis-takes,” said Cho. “We are focusing on all of the dif-ferent trainings, repeating them so that they become understood and second nature.”

Cho sees his role as general manager as being similar to an orchestra conductor who must maintain the balance of keeping others inspired to play their individual roles. Cho strives to be a leader who inspires and devel-ops all 440+ associates on his team, whether it’s by driving them or col-laborating with them, or a combi-

nation of both. As general manager, Cho stays abreast of the day-to-day details through MBWA – Manage-ment By Walking Around – and takes time to personally respond to online guest reviews.

As The Westin Resort Guam looks back on 20 years of success, Cho is looking ahead and paving a

path forward.“This year, what I

would like to do is in-crease the Korean mar-ket by improving and strengthening our on-line marketing efforts. We will also collabo-rate closely with Hae-vichi Hotels in Korea and tap into their large

network,” said Cho. “We are also developing pro-

grams and activities that cater to the family market, which represents a large percentage of our visitors.”

“And of course, I would like to keep up with guest satisfaction, and continue being the number one ho-tel in Guam,” said Cho.

The Westin Resort Guam A Vibrant Journey

With numerous, repeated accolades drawn over the years – Best Buf-fet, Best Sunday Brunch, Best Family Restaurant, to name a few

– there’s little room for doubt that The Westin Resort Guam’s food and beverage division is one of the anchors of the hotel’s popularity and success.

Holding down that anchor is Executive Chef Daniel Lenherr, whose love for travel and affin-ity for introducing fresh international flavors comes through on the menus and in the dishes he creates to appeal to a clientele he has come to know well in the nine years he’s been with The Westin Resort Guam.

“I enjoy taking the best from everywhere in the world and incorporating that into our menus here with fresh, local ingre-dients,” said Chef Len-herr, who joined the resort in 2008. “Whenever we make changes to our menu and do new things, we definitely think about what our clientele likes and we try to in-corporate the local flavors people enjoy.”

Guam’s Best Buffet

Chef Lenherr’s local-infused international cuisine can be seen and sampled seven days a week at Taste – The Westin’s award-winning,

interactive restaurant lauded for its expansive international buffet, Sunday brunch, and Satur-day night Seafood Extravaganza.

“Taste is more open and modern with a little more access to the customers. The chefs have direct contact with the customer since they cook in front of them,” said Chef Lenherr. The restaurant’s open kitchen concept is designed to deliver a personalized dining experience as the chef prepares a meal before a guest.

For the past three consecutive years, Taste was voted Best Buffet and Best Sunday Brunch for Pika’s Best of Guam. Taste also received recognition for Best Sunday Brunch and Best Family Restaurant from Stars and Stripes Best of the Pacific 2016.

a little bit of Pacific flavors to make it a little more exciting,” said Chef Lenherr. “We try to bring different cultures together and different flavors together as well.”

Prego’s Bubblicious Sunday Brunch includes seafood on ice, antipasti and salads, breakfast and Italian lunch favorites, soup, hot entrees, and a dessert bar that features Prego’s signature red velvet cream cheese waffles.

In 2015, Prego’s Bubblicious Sunday Brunch received the award for Best Sunday Brunch on Guam from Stars & Stripes Best of Pacific. Of the seven restaurants located at The Westin Re-sort Guam, Prego is the only one that shares the same grand opening date as the hotel.

The Key to Success

Taste and Prego have remained top choices over the years for island residents because he and his team strive daily to provide consistent, high-quality food and service.

“You have to have a good product all of the time,” said Chef Lenherr. “People will not come back if you have a good product one week and then a bad product another time. It’s always gratifying when someone likes the food and it’s always great when people come back. They come back for the food or because of the good service.”

“I’m at the forefront, so people know my face and recognize me but it’s important they also know that there’s a team behind me of 50 chefs, 20 stewards, and 50 associates. I could never do it by myself,” said Chef Lenherr.

“We have a lot of passion for food, and every day we do the best that we can.”
