“DARE TO BELIEVE”

STEWARDSHIP FOR 2015 AT PASADENA UMC

This year, your Stewardship Planning Team, consisting of Debbie Jester, Andy Lentz, Rev. Marshall, Lee May, and Mike Seibert, went with a theme we had heard at Annual Conference. Do we “Dare to Believe?” Our narrative was prepared by Andy Lentz and Dave Watts, the latter of whom provided editorial help. Often it seems to folks that stewardship and giving is all about money, and, let’s face it, without money we couldn’t do the things we love about PUMC and we think you do, too. But as one of the Team said, “giving is not only about money.” Amen to that! We give to do Christ’s work here at PUMC with our ministries and missions, so we’ll celebrate different ministries and missions each week.

We’ll kick off our “Dare to Believe” campaign on RALLY DAY, SEPTEMBER 20, WITH A FOCUS ON CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND FORMATION . Christian Education means more than Sunday School. Worship is central for us at PUMC, but we are undergirded by Bible study, lifelong learning, and we see this reflected in many ways. Kids love Sunday School! We want this to be a place where they hear and learn Bible lessons, but also have fun. The same is true for the messages shared with them each week in church.

We have many dedicated teachers and helpers, including folks who have been teaching Sunday School for years, often assisted by teen helpers. The Pastor and willing adult helpers led a Confirmation Class in 2015 for 9 youth, who have all become full members of PUMC. We have a Sunday Morning Book Club for adults – not your typical class, so you need to check it out! And youth have the opportunity to continue to learn through UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship) where again the emphasis is on learning, mission outreach, and fun. There’s a place for everyone to participate and help, from our popular Vacation Bible School in the summer, to our year-round Sunday School.

Come and enjoy our traditional Rally Day picnic following the 10:30 worship service in the Fellowship Hall! Remember to bring some side dishes if you can.

WEEK 2 – SEPTEMBER 27 – OUR FOCUS IS WORSHIP

Worship is pivotal to our lives as followers of Jesus Christ, no matter where we are on our journey of faith. Twice monthly we celebrate Café Church at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall, with a unique service including our Praise Band, “All We Need,” breakfast for all, messages that focus on the lessons for the day with images on the screen and ways the Gospel speaks to us today, and holy communion monthly on the second Sunday. The informal context means that folks can get a second cup of coffee and that the little ones can run around.

We originally funded Café Church with a grant from the Baltimore-Washington Conference written by Rev. Marshall that helped us purchase the equipment we needed. Café Church has been a success from Day One! We anticipated 25 might show up, but the attendance was 45! Meet the musicians: Jenn and Ron Riegger have full-time jobs, but find time to practice and bless us with their gift of music each week. Sarah Jester teaches school and has more jobs than we can count (along with her marriage to Drew DelSignore in September), and she’s our lead vocalist. Lydia Gonzalez teaches and donates her time to “All We Need” as a keyboardist. All of this, the pastor’s messages, the gift of music, is given to the glory of God. A portion of your sustaining membership supports Café Church. And what’s truly amazing is that all ages worship together there and love this service.

Traditional Worship is our mainstay every week at 10:30. There’s music shared by all our groups, from the Chancel Choir to the Christian Chimers (Bell Choir) to the Children’s Choirs, to special music by soloists and small groups. Sarah Jester, Bill Blanchard, and Debbie Jester lead these groups that are comprised of volunteers. Our organist, Donna Dixon Ervin, accompanies us. There’s a message for children and youth offered by the Pastor, as well as sermons. We pray and recognize our joys and concerns. Communion is shared the first Sunday of the month.

We celebrate baptisms, welcoming and receiving new members, special recognition of ministries, and festive fellowship times at both services. In fact, numerous people attend both. The music and the messages may change, but the Holy Spirit is with us throughout. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 – WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY – OUR FOCUS IS MISSIONS

Sometimes people wonder how we can do so much to help other people, when our missions are not typically funded by our church budget. The answer is that virtually the entire congregation volunteers to make our missions possible, here at home or overseas. We have supported Winter Relief for many years, and whole families turn out to help; the youth help; the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Venture Crew all help. Food is prepared and lovingly served to homeless men.

Camp Hope is a major effort in Western MD involving youth and teens working together to repair and refurbish houses for those in need – all for the love of God.

The same principle applies for our Care Corner Food Pantry. As one member said, “it’s like the loaves and fishes. When we run low on food, we ask, and the congregation always brings food in the following week.” Dresses for Girls is still going strong, and we have crafted and contributed 500 dresses, sent to Haiti, Guatemala, and where UMCOR (the United Methodist Commission on Relief) sees a need. And speaking of UMCOR, from Hurricane Katrina to Superstorm Sandy to earthquakes in Nepal, and devastation in Baltimore, PUMC has come to meet the need with flood buckets and health kits. Our Women of Church have an active Prayer Shawl Ministry – we give the beautiful shawls to those who are ill, home members, homeowners from Camp Hope, and anyone who needs to be wrapped in God’s love. The Sunday School sponsors monthly missions including Heifer International.

And we haven’t listed everything! Our School Supplies drive in late summer-early fall supports 7 e l ementary s choo ls and the ir t eachers , helping to pay for school supplies for children and youth who can’t afford them. When our Care Corner begins to dip in what is available, often our Venture Crew, a young adult scouting group, will go out to food stores and engage in “Scouting for Food” to bring many pounds into the church.

We support many missions and ministries overseas, too, through the apportionments we pay to the Baltimore-Washington Conference. We give proportionally so that each church pays its share, through the World Service Fund, Ministerial Education Fund, General Administrative Fund and others. 85 cents of every dollar of apportionments stays with local churches, 7 cents goes to the northeast jurisdiction, annual conference, and districts.

Through our apportionments and giving to the Baltimore-Washington Conference we have supported “Nothing but Nets” and “Imagine No Malaria.” We’ve consistently exceeded our goals. No one church can do it all. Thankfully, PUMC has a heart for mission and helping others in the name of God and his Son, Jesus Christ, and we are committed to doing all we can. “Open Hearts, Open Doors, Open Minds” – our motto and our credo.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2015 – OUR FOCUS IS STAFFING AND PERSONNEL

Personnel expenses are a big part of any church budget. Many times, people don’t stop to consider that pastors serve the church and congregation in good times and bad, day in and day out. Pastor Sherrin loves the little children, whether we are welcoming infants into the church or inviting children to the message for them. She’s also there for you when you’re sick or in need, and knows the route to every hospital and nursing home within at least 25 miles. Sermons, counseling sessions, meetings two or three nights a week, Pastor

Sherrin is in her ninth year here at Pasadena and has seen us through numerous weddings and funerals, as well as a major renovation program.

In addition to the pastor, we have a secretary who manages our office five days a

week, responsible for putting the bulletins together, the weekly e-Chimes, and the Chimes Newsletter, managing the Care Corner, and being there whenever you call the office. Although we talked about them under music, our musicians are part of our personnel budget, several holding advanced degrees. They are part-time employees, some of whom have “day jobs.” We know they keep busy even if they are retired. Once again we lift up our musicians at both services, and the addition to our staff of Laura Stumpfoll, who assumed the responsibilities of Youth Ministries Director in March, 2015. We see growth and Spirit in their activities and ask your continued support for all our staff, who consistently go the extra mile at all hours of the day and night.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2015 – OUR FOCUS IS LAITY SUNDAY AND ALL OUR WONDERFUL PUMC VOLUNTEERS Our church would not be successful in carrying out its Mission without the hard work of vo lunteers . From Sunday School teachers to choir members, to the members of the Café Church Band, “All We Need,” Scouting leaders, UMW officers and members, members of committees and teams, liturgists and Scripture readers and acolytes who help with worship services, each one gives a small or large part of their time to the ministries of the church. United Methodists define themselves as being “connected,” part of a “connectional system.” This means that we are part of a large denomination, and that we are integrated with other churches. We have shown forth that involvement both locally and internationally. Locally, many of our members volunteered to participate in Change the World Mission Days with Hall United Methodist Church in Glen Burnie, to help folks in our local with the skills we’ve learned at Camp Hope, or that people know through their work experiences. We renovated three houses for elders from Hall who were not able to pay for these services.

Each fall we have participated in (and generally host, because we have the space in our Sanctuary for all musical groups and attendees) an ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve service with other area churches. We gathered with area United Methodist Churches to host a special service to “Support our Troops – Strength through Service” and we still contributed to the Maryland National Guard as a “Partner in Care.” We contribute to special fund appeals, and a portion of the church budget is sent to the Baltimore-Washington Conference to meet our Apportionments, most of which supports world missionary activities.

As we spread the message of the love of God through our volunteer efforts here in the church and in the greater Pasadena area, the state, the nation, and the world, we know that we are living out the charge Jesus made to his disciples: “Go and make disciples for Jesus Christ and for the transformation of the world.”

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2015 – CELEBRATION SUNDAY!

WE CELEBRATE THE “DARE TO BELIEVE” FAITH THAT BUILT OUR CHURCH, SUSTAINED US, STEPPED OUT WITH A “LEAP OF FAITH” – AND WE LOOK TO THE FUTURE AS WE “DARE TO BELIEVE!”

Our church building has stood at 61 Ritchie Highway for 57 years. The sanctuary has echoed with music and praise nearly every Sunday, almost 3,000 services plus countless weddings, baptisms, and funeral services. Did you know that our church is open almost every night of the week? We’ve been a sanctuary in the community supporting scouting, programs to combat addiction, elections, community meetings, and our own church – with committee meetings, rehearsals, and UMYF gatherings. For the past 35 years, we’ve been open every morning as the home of the Pasadena Early Learning Center.

Your contributions provide light, heat, air conditioning, and snow removal to ensure that we’ll continue to be a safe, warm, welcoming place of worship and refuge. We can’t do it without you. As we approach the Centennial Celebration of our congregation, how can we be more welcoming?

Our “Leap of Faith” is an attitude and a way of life. You’ve probably heard news reports that the “Millenials” and also many “Boomers” have given up on church. We still believe people will come, looking for a church home. Our “Leap of Faith” gave the Sanctuary a face lift: upholstered cushions in the wooden pews, handrails leading to the altar, woodwork around the pulpit and lectern.

We transformed a janitor’s closet into a fully handicapped-accessible bathroom. New lighting, painting the fellowship hall, and tile allowed us to be more welcoming to our current members and show those who come to visit that we are providing a warm and inviting place of worship. When we see a “Leap of Faith”/Building Renovation envelope, it is to repay this loan.

Giving is not only about money – you’ve read here how people have been giving of themselves to serve the Lord and Jesus Christ since we began. But the funds that we receive from our generous congregation support every mission and ministry of Pasadena UMC. Thank you and may God bless you!

The CARE CORNER FOOD PANTRY at Pasadena United Methodist Church is a ministry that is important to us and to all in our community. We are open 3 mornings (Mon-Wed) each week, all year long, providing food for anyone who needs it. We help approximately 1,500 people per year. Thanks to all of you who have brought in food! WE STILL NEED MORE OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

INSTANT/CANNED POTATOES

PUMC IS SEEKING SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS FOR FALL - SPRING 2015 - 2016. We are excited with our new “lectionary-based” (means that we will follow the same lessons that we will hear in worship and are typically also part of the message for children and youth) Sunday School curriculum, "Activate Faith” by Spark House (published by Augsberg Fortress Press). Each class is led by a teacher and a helper. We work with a team of 3 teachers, where each is responsible for one month on a 3 month rotation – allowing teachers to have time to stay in worship for the other 2 months.

PUMC's Sunday School is held during the 10:30 worship service following the message for children and youth. We have need for teachers and helpers! Sunday School officially begins on September 20, and materials are available for teachers to review. Please sign up during worship, or let Pastor Marshall or Katrina Harris in our church office (410-647-3090) know if you feel called to help with this important ministry.

NEW THIS YEAR - Middle school and high school ages will meet from 10:00 – 10:30 AM each week so they can be available to attend the entire worship service. We also need teachers for the middle school class.

  PASADENA  UNITED  METHODIST  CHURCH

Electronic Offering at PUMC – E-Giving is the answer all of the time! How can I keep up with my offering when I’m not in the pew? E-giving is the answer. I used to forget my checkbook or even my envelopes, now I don’t worry at all. My check arrives at the church twice a month whether I’m in church that Sunday or not. Working with my bank, I was able to use their FREE bill pay service to establish a bi-weekly payment to the church. Transfers can be created on a recurring basis: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. It is completely within my control and quicker for me to cancel or change if my circumstances require. What are the benefits of automating contributions?

1. You are taking a step of faith – When you sign up to give automatically you are deciding in advance to faithfully give. God blesses that kind of faith!

2. You make your life a little bit simpler – You don’t need to remember whether you gave this month. And if you are out of town or on vacation, you don’t need to think about it. You don't even have to remember to write a check each week and bring it to church Sunday morning.

3. You will be helping the church – Every person who gives through automatic giving makes our record keeping easier and helps ensure continuous monthly cash flow to cover ministry expenses particularly during the summer vacation months.

4. You can focus on worship at church – Instead of having to get out a pen and write out an envelope and check, you can focus entirely on worship.

5. There are no processing fees - 100% of your gift goes to Pasadena United Methodist Church.

6. You'll still receive envelopes - You can supplement your electronic contributions at any time.

For most banks you can create this transfer action directly online at the bank's website or by phone. No coordination, notification, or action by PUMC is required. Our Financial Secretary will receive notification of your funds transfer to ensure proper annotation to your giving records for the annual statement of giving that you can use for income tax filing. Your church envelopes can be used to supplement your offerings whenever you like.

1. Establish Pasadena United Methodist Church as a Payee.

2. Provide your bank with your offering envelope number, either as an "account number" or in a "memo" option within the payment statement.

3. Verify that the bank has the correct church address and phone number [61 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, MD 21122; (410) 647-3090].

4. Relax and enjoy the service!

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to talk with you about my experience. Or you could contact Wilma Robley, the church’s financial secretary for more information. Andy Lentz [email protected] 410-599-9945
