RESIDENT MARKETING COMMITTEE :The next meeting will be at

11am on September 5th in the Board Room. The mission of the

committee is to support the Marketing Department in attracting new

residents to Collington, and well as welcoming and integrating new

residents into the Collington community. Residents on the committee

meet monthly with marketing staff, make and deliver welcome bags,

plan and host dinners for newcomers, assist at marketing events,

open our homes to prospective residents, and the Ambassador

subcommittee works one-on-one with people as they prepare to

become Collingtonians. At the September meeting we will elect

officers for the upcoming year, meet the new Move-In Coordinator,

and learn about the new Department leadership. All residents are

charged with providing an Annual Report every year at their October

meeting. Operating Chairs and District Reps are asked to please

On September 11, The Speakers Committee will feature civil rights activist Rosalyn Woodward Pelles. Pelles, has a five-decade history of social justice activism that beginning with her work as a teenager in the Congress of Racial Equality. Ms. Pelles will center her talk on her activism, the times we live in, and her work with the poor people’s campaign. Ms. Pelles is currently the Executive Director of Repairers of the Breach, “an organization whose mission is to provide political and organizing training to clergy and faith leaders with the goal of engaging them in social justice movements in their communities.” Prior to her current position, Ms. Pelles was the Director of the Civil, Human and Women’s Rights Department at the AFL-CIO. She also served as the Executive Director of the North Carolina NAACP and as the Executive Director of the National Rainbow Coalition and Special Assistant to Reverend Jessie L. Jackson, Sr. She continues to serve as an advisor to the movement for social change in North Carolina and the South. Rosalyn Pelles was featured as one of the country’s outstanding African American women labor leaders in the And Still I Rise: Black Women Labor Leaders Initiative, a project of the Institute for Policy Studies. She was also the recipient of the Life Time Achievement Award from the Working Class Studies Association. Ms. Pelles is on campus as a guest of Bud and Rita Gardiner. COLLINGTON SINGERS: Second Advance Notice – Our rehearsals

will begin Monday, September 16th at 4 PM in the Auditorium. Those

who wish to join the Singers should come to this first rehearsal. The

Small Group will start rehearsals on Thursday, September 26th. This

is an auditioned group. The Collington Singers Winter Concerts will be

Saturday, December 7th at 7 PM and Sunday, December 8th at 3 PM.

FROM HEALTH SERVICES: The month of September is Healthy Aging Month. In addition to other Health related activities, Kim Rivers and Tiffan’e Markham will host a Dog Fashion Show September 24th at 2pm in the Auditorium. Registration forms will be attached to the Courier for two weeks, and will close on September 18th. Please be advised that current shot records are required for dogs to participate. We’ll need at least 10 participants in order to run the show. We’re looking forward to seeing your dog on the runway! Please check the calendar for upcoming Healthy Aging events.

LIBRARY LECTURES: The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies Revisted September 22,2019 7pm in the Auditorium

Mark Croatti will discuss William Hanchett's theories on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, which remains one of the greatest mysteries in American history. While we know John Wilkes Booth pulled the trigger, we don't know who ordered the assassination, including who made it possible. Did Booth's team act on their own as part of a "simple conspiracy" or were they were partners in a "grand conspiracy" involving elements of the Confederate and Union governments? In his 1983 book The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies, William Hanchett revisits the three theories on who gave the order--Booth, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, or whether it could have been a Union coup orchestrated by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, as suggested by Otto Eisenschiml in his 1937 classic, Why Was Lincoln Murdered? Hanchett's outstanding book makes a compelling case for all three possibilities, and yet, is there a fourth; could elements of the South and North have acted in unison? In 1864, former Ohio Congressman and Lincoln critic Clement Vallandigham, co-founder of the Copperheads, was arrested and deported to the Confederacy, after which he assumed control of the suddenly reorganized Knights of the Golden Circle, which included Booth. Vallandigham knew both Davis and Stanton. Even Booth had puzzling ties to Union officials; why was co-conspirator Michael O'Laughlen at Stanton's house the night before the assassination? Why did Booth visit Andrew Johnson en route to Ford's Theater? After spymaster Lafayette C. Baker accused Stanton of burning 18 pages from Booth's diary, Johnson fired Stanton in a power struggle (and was impeached). Is the role Vallandigham and the Knights played the key to Lincoln's assassination? Mark Croatti, M.A., teaches political science at The George Washington University.

the project will be available to give more information. On the panel

will be our CEO, Ann Gillespie, the co-chairs of the Health Services

Alliance – Peter Fielding and Megan Barbour, a Kendal Corp member

of the Alliance, and one of our contracted architects.

The Panel want to know what you are thinking. In preparation for

this meeting, we would like to hear your concerns and

name on it, to a box that will soon be placed near Vern’s desk in the

Clock Tower.None of your questions will be answered individually, but

they will all go to the panelists for them to prepare what they cover in

Attention All Housing Leaders All District, Cluster and Hall

leaders: are encouraged to attend the workshop on Monday,

September 30th, from 2:30 – 4 p.m. in the Game Room. We will gather

with Ann Gillespie, CEO, Phoebe Graham, Independent Living Social

Worker and Gary Anderson, Chair of the Social Services committee,

to update current information and our shared experience in the last

few months. Gary will lead us in a conversation about our

fundamental need for human connection and the important housing

leadership roles in connecting with fellow residents. Gary plans to

discuss ways to enhance the quality of the connections that housing

leaders make. Nadine Hathaway, first Vice President of the

Residents Association.

OUTREACH COMMITTEE:The Outreach Committee is collecting

supplies for teachers to use at Cora Rice and Kettering Elementary

Schools. These would be excess items that Residents might be trying

to find a good home for and teachers could use throughout the

year. We are hoping to gather:

Built in 1927, Ridgeley School is one of 27 schools in Prince George’s County to receive assistance from the Rosenwald Fund. The segregated school served African American children living near Central Avenue until the 1950s. Restored and reopened as a museum in 2011, it is one of the best examples of a Rosenwald School in the County.

FROM FACILITIES/IT: Rob Riegel/Jerome Perry Cell Phone Service at Collington

Cell service on Collington property is weak because the cell phone towers are

not close to Collington. We have been working to get a tower closer or even on

our property. If this can be accomplish it will still be awhile before that is

completed. Verizon seems to be the best carrier on the property, but it is also

weak. To help this situation we recommend using Wi-Fi calling features on

smart phones. As an example, Apple iPhone 5S and later models have the Wi-

Fi calling capability. Other smart phones have this capability but we do not keep

a list of which phones have the capability. To help keep cell phone purchase

cost down you can request the older iPhone models instead of the newest

version which is the 8 and 10 when looking to buy a new cell phone. Also

please note that Wi-Fi calling is an additional setting above and beyond Wi-Fi

capability itself.

For iPhones, Wi-Fi is turned on under settings then Wi-Fi. iPhone Wi-Fi calling

is turned on under settings then Phone, then Wi-Fi Calling. If the option is not

there you may have to contact their cell service provider (such as Verizon) to

have Wi-Fi calling capability turned on (which is free). Please note the warnings

about using Wi-Fi calling when enabling it, it uses E911 so when calling 911

from a cell phone with Wi-Fi calling enabled they will respond to the address

typed in when Wi-Fi calling is enabled. The work around to this is to ALWAYS

make sure 911 has your correct location which is recommended even if you are

not using Wi-Fi calling.If you have questions on this or to get assistance please

submit a work order and someone from our Information Technology team will

follow up.

THE FACILITIES TEAM WILL BEGIN INSTALLING DOOR

FROM LANDSCAPING: Collington Lake is a stormwater management pond that catches runoff from all impervious surfaces. The Lake should not be used for swimming and should not be used as a main water source for pets. The Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist who recently came out to Collington stated he has seen no signs of blue-green algae species in Collington’s Lake so far this year and for those who have seen the recent news stories related to blue-green algae, can be assured that our Lake is monitored on a regular basis. FROM HEALTH SERVICES: The clinic will be closed on Monday,

September 2, 2019 in observation of Labor Day.

Dr. Khalil will return on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 and the clinic will

resume normal business hours on this date.

As a reminder, physician availability in the clinic is currently:

Tuesdays: 9:00am - 12:00pm & 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Thursdays: 9:00am - 12:00pm & 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Fridays: 10:30am - 2:00pm

The CDC is projecting the 2019-2020 flu season to begin the end of

October. The flu vaccine is also recommended by the CDC to help

protect against the flu. Dates and times of flu shot availability in the

Outpatient clinic will be shared soon.

Annual Fund and the outstanding work of the RA Outreach Committee made this

Beginning October 1, 2020, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.

Check for the star. REAL ID-compliant drivers licenses and id cards are generally marked with a star located in the upper portion of the card. If you’re not sure, contact the Maryland driver’s license agency on how to obtain a REAL ID compliant card. If you are un-certain about your ID refer to http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid. Second Vice President: Sue Regen Treasurer: Ann Carlson Secretary: Judy Collins A “Meet the Candidates “ forum will be held on September 24 at 5 p.m. in the auditorium. Voting will take place on Thursday, October 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Clocktower lobby. The results of the voting will be announced at the annual meeting of the Association on Friday, October 4. Additional candidates can be nominated by petition with the signatures of at least 25 Association members. Petition nominations may be sent to Nominating Committee member Marianne Mann (2117) by Wednesday, September 18. The Nominating Committee will ascertain whether the nominee is willing to serve before placing his or her name on the ballot. Members of the Nominating Committee are: John Barker, Rita Gardiner, Joyce Garrison, Marianne Mann (chair) and Don Zelman. The following is a description of the duties of the first Vice President:

• Assumes the duties of the President in the President’s absence and succeeds to the office of President if the President is unable or unwilling to serve;

• Participates in the Executive Committee;

• Chairs the Operating Committee Chairs group;

• Works with the Fiscal Review and other committees on annual CELCC budget;

• Liaisons with Operating Committees and plans for future Resident Association activities. It is not imperative that the First VP attend all operating committee meetings. The only requirement is that the VP keep his/her fingers on the pulse of these committees and community concerns.
