Tax season is gearing up, butit doesn’t mean you shouldthink about your finances oncea year.
For many people, acquiringpersonal finance skills isn’tsomething picked up in school.Instead, it’s a learned processfrom parents or another out-side source.
If you are someone who hasquestions about personal fi-nances ― whether you want tobetter track your spending, build a savings or understandcredit reports ― resources areavailable through SalineCounty’s University of MissouriExtension Office.
MU Extension’s Family Fi-nancial Education courses offera variety of topics for thosehoping to achieve certain fi-nancial goals. Family FinancialEducation Specialist Trish Sav-
age, who leads the courses, saidshe’s seen one over-archingtheme of people’s needs: learn-ing the basics.
“I have found … just the ba-sics of setting financial goalsand creating two financialstatements (are desired),” Sav-age said, saying they create anet worth statement and a cashflow statement. “Then they canget a summary of their currentfinancial situation and thencreate a spending plan ― andtracking expenses. Just thatbasic budgeting.”
Savage noted once peoplebegin to pay attention to theirpersonal expenses, they see adifference in their habits.
“One client I had counseledin Columbia, on campus ― aneducated person working righton campus ― thought that theywere in control of their money. But yet she kept running out ofmoney every month, wonder-ing where it was, and they had
no retirement,” she said. “Butthen when she started actuallypaying attention to her check-book and a budget, she wroteme a letter and said it’s justmade a world of difference.”
Some courses that focus onbasic budgeting include MoneyHabitudes I and II, MakingMoney Count and Take Controlof Your Finances.
Take Control of Your Fi-nances is a two-hour workshopthat focuses on helping reducestress for those who are unem-ployed, laid-off, underem-ployed or struggle to makeends meet. The course is free tothose registered withjobs.mo.gov. It’s offered eversecond Tuesday at Sedalia Ca-reer Center, and every fourthTuesday in Marshall, whichacts as a satellite office.
“I think it’s so important tolearn about predatory lendingand credit reports that I haveexpanded that a little bit ...” Sav-
age said. “It’s just somethingthat everyone needs some in-formation on because, I think, many people go to the preda-tory lenders and I think theycan be more efficient withthere money. And there are al-ternatives.”
Other courses hone in onmore focused financial topics, such as When Creditors arePredators, Women and Fi-nance, Health Insurance Edu-cation Initiative and HomeOwnership Made Easier ― atwo- to four-hour workshopdesigned to walk the partici-pant through the steps of buy-ing a home.
Learning about a reversemortgage is also an option forcommunity members.
“It’s a really complex prod-uct,” she said. “It’s appropriate, maybe, in some instances. Theyreally are expensive. There area lot of costs and fees incurred. So if people know what they’re
getting into, they can make thatdecision.”
Savage looks to give work-shops to groups and partnerwith community groups inorder to reach a wider audi-ence. Although individualcounseling might be available. She’s headquartered in SalineCounty, but reaches into fourother counties with financialexpertise.
Many courses can take placeat the Extension office, locatedat 353 S. Lafayette Ave. Othersare scheduled in the commu-nity, including a health insur-ance course she led this pastDecember at Marshall PublicLibrary.
For more information on fi-nancial courses and how toregister, call the Extension at660-886-6908 or email Savageat [email protected] and groups interestedin partnering are encouragedto call.
