Acolytes lead our procession into church, an emblem of our saintly vocation. The history of All Saints’ narrates the procession of saints whom we immediately follow. Most of the ministries displayed in Seccombe Hall this weekend were begun by generations who preceded us. There are also many names of peoples and ministries not yet displayed, which represent opportunities for you to take up an existing ministry, or to start something new. And, of course, the names are reminders of our sainthood, for we all exercise ministry in many untold ways. Today we are celebrating the ministry of the saints! We not only follow those who preceded us, but also lead others. Many children and adults now follow your lead, for we are the saints of God.

Helping Those in Need in Your Own CommunityBy Marcia Jeiroudi

Impact those in need in your very own community by donating non-perishable food. All Saints’ and the Church of the Wayfarer have joined together to collect food for the hungry until November 24th when the Church of the Wayfarer will process to our church and the donations will be blessed. Please bring food items and place them in the basket as you enter the church, such as, spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, chili, hearty soups, tuna, rice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, and canned fruits and vegetables. In addition to these items, we think it would be great to provide traditional Thanksgiving Day foods, such as, canned yams, cranberry,stuffing mix, packaged gravy, and canned pumpkin. Thank you for your holiday kindness.

Saints Commune with God and One Another By The Rev. Rick Matters

Today we give thanks to God for being a saint at All Saints’. The term “saint” identifies our relationship to God, each other, and the world. We commune with each other within the love of God in which we dwell. This oneness of love is why Holy Communion is our principal identifying act. In additional to the weekly Eucharist, here are steps for practicing sainthood:•  Recognize  that God has  set  you  apart  for  the purpose  of 

blessing others. •  Follow Jesus Christ to the best of your ability. •  Ask  yourself  what  decisions  might  best  help  others  love 

God and neighbor. •  Live in as moral a manner as possible, always remembering 

that your virtuous behavior encourages others to follow your example.

•  Finally, bring yourself and your choices to the communion of saints for renewal and discernment.

Sometimes we may find that our spiritual disciplines do little to water our souls and that we feel as the psalmist writes:”dried up as by the heat of summer.” He recognizes and teaches his listeners that it is unconfessed transgression and sin that dry up the fountain of of one’s soul. Zacchaeus himself felt unworthy. Wealthy, albeit short in stature, he wanted to see Jesus, yet felt small inside. Unworthy. Perched in the sycamore tree he was paralyzed by fear, guilt, and aimlessness ... until Jesus calls out to him by name. It is the understanding and acceptance of God’s grace that shadows us from the perils of God’s judgement, and the vanity of life without God. For it is in depending on Christ, and on Christ alone, that our souls find strength. It is entertaining the Savior, as did Zacchaeus, that salvation comes to our homes, to the very depth of our being.

“To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the lord Jesus Christ.” - 2 Ths 1:11,12

Loving your Enemy By Robin Denney

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” This is perhaps the most radical and paradigm-shifting precept in any religion.  What would the world look like if all two billion Christians lived this command of Jesus?  What would our country, our community, look like?  On my very first day of living in South Sudan, I got to talk to a bishop who explained to me that Jesus’s commandment to love your enemy was the most radical kind of love that existed in the world, and that it was the only hope for his, the bishops’s people, his post-war new-born country, to have a future. I met bishops, clergy, and lay people in South Sudan who constantly risked their lives living out this commandment, and making sure that their country was born in peace.  What are you willing to do to live out the Gospel? What divisions are Christ’s radical love calling you to bridge? This is the work of serving as saints!

Set Apart in LoveBy The Rev. Rick Matters

The Church is a community of people who follow Jesus Christ. Being a saint means that God has set us apart for the sake of the world. Our blessedness derives from God’s grace, which we receive as we turn away from our self, our own accomplishments and control, and acknowledge God’s lordship. We’re not saints by virtue of being nearly perfect, but by virtue of God’s free grace. We practice sainthood to the degree we live beyond ourselves by loving others and God. Our dual saintly purpose of loving God and neighbor multiplies our delight.

As  saints  we  constitute  a  community  of  giving.  Jesus  gives himself to us through the Holy Spirit, so that we can perpetuate God’s self-giving. We give of our time by volunteering, and we give of our talents by employing them for the sake of the greater whole. We give of our wealth, because our money is a source of power by which we glorify Christ and serve others.

Commitment Sunday rescheduled for November 24—Present your 2014 pledge on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, or mail it ahead of time.

Big Sur Coat and Blanket Drive—This month Santa Lucia Mission is collecting sweaters, coats, blankets, tents, and sleeping bags. Collection boxes will be available at All Saints’ on Sundays and during the week.

Thanksgiving services and events—The annual IOC Thanksgiving service will be held on Tuesday, November 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Carmel Mission Basilica. All Saints’ will offer a Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, followed by a potluck Thanksgiving dinner at noon in Seccombe Hall.

Join with Church of the Wayfarer to collect non-perishable food for the hungry (spaghetti/spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, chili/hearty soups, tuna, rice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, canned fruits and vegetables). Don’t forget to check expiration dates! Our joint donations will be collected and blessed on November 24. Place your donations in the containers provided in the church.

St. Nicholas Day is coming, and planning will begin soon for our annual St. Nicholas Celebration. Contact Fr. Rick if you’d like to join a team from the school and parish to help with this annual event for all ages.

Sunday handout deadline—To be included in next Sunday’s handout, your announcement must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on the preceding Wednesday.
