Feast Day Mass
Last week the community of Notre Dame, together with our communities around the world, gathered to celebrate the Feast Day of the Presentation of Our Lady in the Temple. Bishop Moth lead the service which also marked the beginning of our 80th year in Cobham! This was followed by a special birthday tea which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
A commemorative Oak tree was planted to mark the 80th year and
we have also designed a special 80th birthday advert which you will be
seeing in various publications throughout the year! Well done to our talented Year 6 for creating these beautiful balloons!
We hope you all enjoyed the special commemorative newsletter which was sent out last week!
Safe Driving in the Car Parks Please!
Drivers please be vigilant and adhere to speed limits in the School Car Parks. There are young children who are not always visible to cars and who are still learning about road safety.

Prof Madden Presentation
Year 12 and 13 biologists were treated to a special presentation by Professor Madden, a Cardiologist
who lectures at Cambridge University and practises at three different hospitals.
Professor Madden explained the anatomical structure of the cardiovascular system via a demonstration of a dissection of a sheep lungs and heart. He built on our biology foundation knowledge by providing additional detail on our syllabus, relating it to medicine. This experience not only was of interest to the girls present but also provided real insight to those thinking of pursuing a career as a doctor in the future. This was an enriching and thoughtful talk that was well received and incredibly enjoyable! Thank you so much Professor Madden.

Alumnae Lucy Returns to Inspire Current Geography Students
We are always delighted to welcome back former Notre Dame Geography students and last Thursday morning it was our pleasure to have Lucy Buck back in the Geography Department. Since completing her GCSEs and A levels at Notre Dame, she has graduated from Southampton University and having completed two Masters, recently started a PhD
in Disaster, Risk and Resilience at UCL.
Lucy gave two A level groups and a Year 9 class a fascinating talk on tectonic hazards and we discovered how managing risk can be sensitive as in the case of Mt Paektu on the North Korean – Chinese border. In addition to supplementing their class work the girls were able to consider a range of degree and job opportunities available to them.

Y4 Sound - Science Year 4 were experimenting with musical instruments this week, and measuring how loud/quiet they are. We used an app to measure the sound in decibels, and recorded the results in our own tables. Once we had finished experimenting, we wrote a conclusion to sum up what we had found out, and looked back to see if our predictions were correct. Some of the things we wrote in our conclusions were; ‘The loudest shaker was the pink one as it was metal banging against metal.’ ‘The type of material the instrument is made from makes it louder/quieter’
Year 5 Science
Year 5 have just started their new Science topic on ‘Plant and animal reproduction’. As part of their first lesson, they had great fun dissecting lilies and looking at the reproductive parts of the plant. They used magnifying glasses to look more closely at each of the parts they found. This really helped them to understand the processes of pollination and fertilisation.
Year 6 Use Microscopes
Last week year 6 had their science lesson in the Senior School Biology Lab to try out the microscopes and see microorganisms and cells.
"It was really cool to see into the microscopes and all the bacteria." Sophia T
"It was amazing, I never realised onion skin was so interesting!" Sophie K
"I really enjoyed it, it was really interesting seeing the onion skin in that much detail." Mia D
"I really enjoyed looking through the microscope, it was so interesting and amazing!" Beatrix D.
All the year 6 girls looked just like real scientists, they worked very sensibly! I was very impressed.

READING MATTERS @NDS_LIBRARY
Prep Library News
Books that stimulate interest in Science and Engineering
Every year the Royal Society celebrates the best science books written for children under 14, through its Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2017. The Prize promotes excellent, easily-accessible science and engineering books and 3,000 children from 300 schools read, and voted on, a shortlist of six books.
This year’s winner is announced - scientist, TV presenter and author Robert Winston. His book - Home Lab – Exciting Experiments for Budding Scientists - is a selection of 28 scientific experiments, that can be done at home using everyday items, from making slime to powering a speedboat using soap! Fact filled panels explain the science behind the experiments. This is an interactive book that children will really enjoy. It is now on its way to the Library!
Mrs Hughes
Senior Library News Current research (Scholastic) suggests that teens who read for pleasure at least one hour a day had higher vocabulary scores than their peers who
did not read as often. Other sources have suggested that a student needs to hear a new word 4 to 12 times before it is added to their vocabulary.
The September update of the Oxford English Dictionary includes over a thousand new headwords, senses and subentries. Many of the entries are ancient and obsolete ‘but they contribute to the OED’s mission of recording the millennium-long history of English’. For example the verb afound means ‘to become numb or stiff with cold’, and was an Anglo-Norman word used by Chaucer. More modern entries include the term fatberg, (dates from 2008) which denotes ‘a large lump of cooking fat and other waste which has congealed and hardened after being poured down a drain, or a very large mass of waste found blocking a sewage system.’ Among the scientific terms are exoplanet - a planet which orbits a star other than the sun, also known as an extrasolar planet; chronozone - a group of strata formed during the same chron of geologic time.
There are also a number of interesting regional inclusions – some suggested by listeners of BBC Local Radio and others influenced by social media sites. They include:
croggy - a ride given to a passenger on a bicycle, in which the recipient sits on the crossbar, handlebars, or behind the person pedalling.
winterval – a blend of winter and festival.
yampy – mad or crazy
snived – overrun, infested.
corporation pop – northern slang for water, especially tap water.
The full list of words can be found at http://public.oed.com During reading sessions, we have been encouraging students to look up new words and record them on the white-board for discussion. These words are also displayed on a notice-board in the Senior Library and will be included in a compendium which is shortly to be downloaded onto Firefly.
