TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear Parishioners and Friends, Two weeks ago in this space I shared with you further thoughts from the book by Matthew Kelly entitled: “The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic.” Those four signs are: Evangelization, Prayer, Study and Generosity. I have written about Evangelization and Prayer. Today I wish to address Study. Kelly writes about the genius of Catholicism and I am sure this expression affects different people in different ways. Kelly maintains that “Dynamic Catholics” spend about 15 minutes each day studying some aspect of Jesus and his Church. There are so many resources out there. Jesus doesn’t want just followers. He wants disciples. To be a Christian disciple begins by sitting at the feet of Christ to learn. I know at our elementary school, the students are encouraged to consider themselves as life-long learners. We “sit at the feet” of a variety of persons, TV talk show hosts, political commentators and schools of thought. How often do we sit at the feet of Jesus, who teaches through the Scriptures, Christian tradition and the Church? If we don’t study our faith and its religious expression, we are living with a very juvenile level of knowing. What do we have to pass on to the next generation? There are those who disagree with a Church teaching and the life-long learner will approach the issues by saying: “Why does the Church teach what she teaches. It is unlikely that I know better than 2000 years of the best Catholic theologians and philosophers. What am I missing?” Study is a commitment to discover the truth. There are others who categorically reject what the Church teaches because of certain issues that are countercultural and “out of step with modern society”. It is not surprising that these conclusions are often reached with little more than a surface understanding of what the Church teaches and why. Kelly’s reflection on this sign of a Dynamic Catholic is: “This sign is all about continuous learning, the daily discipline of exploring the way of Jesus and the genius of Catholicism.” (Pg. 21) Already announced in the parish bulletin are various programs of on-going adult faith education. Parish leadership will be offering a variety of programs and a variety of formats to attempt to entice you to attend one program or another. The goal of our adult faith formation and Ignatian programs is to assist you in your study of Jesus and your faith and to grow into being a Dynamic Catholic. God bless all, Fr.

Existen muchos recursos. Jesús no sólo quiere seguidores. ¿Qué me hace falta?

RELIGIOUS

EDUCATION

Registration is now available for the 2015-2016 school year. St. Francis uses Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for the religious formation for children ages 3 years old through 5th Grade. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is faith formation that promotes a personal and life long relationship with our Lord. Relationships take time to develop and this is one of many reasons we encourage you to enroll your child as young as three years old. Registration forms are available in the front office as well as on line. Please feel free to call with any questions you may have. Mindy Longwell 602-212-4530 (Eng.) Barb Edwards 602-212-4532 (Eng.) EDUCACION RELIGIOSA

Mindy Longwell 602-212-4530 (Eng.) Please Join TEAM 100

We Have Just $4.7 Million Remaining to “Realize the Master’s Plan”

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

The new Parish Center is well underway,

construction will finish by the end of the year. We still have to raise $4.7 million to complete our capital campaign requirements. There has never been a better time to contribute.

YOU can help us match our generous Anderson

Family Foundation’s $5 million grant to complete the final phase of our capital campaign. For every dollar you contribute, it will be matched… dollar for dollar! As you consider my request, I ask that:

If you have made a donation to the School Building Fund, please consider making a new pledge to our Realizing the Master’s Plan Campaign; If you have not made a donation to the capital campaign, I hope you will consider making a pledge at this time. The time is NOW to come together and join TEAM 100 to Realize the Master’s Plan at St. Francis Xavier Parish and School and complete this FINAL phase of the capital campaign, which will benefit all parishioners.

If you would like to discuss a special way to honor your family or a loved one, we have a number of unique naming options available to you that are available for as little as $8,000. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information at (602) 212-4514 or [email protected] to discuss these exciting opportunities. I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you for your generosity and support. Gratefully,

Fr. Dan Sullivan, S.J. Pastor

Fr. Dan Sullivan, S.J. Párroco
