Streaming down a river

Bob, Joe, Lisa, and June, who are water droplets, were in a vast river. They were forming a hydrogen bond, this is what happens when water droplets are near each other. They were streaming down the river and they came across and hit many rocks. The water was moving aggressively, this is called its surface tension, it’s the tension on the surface of the water.

Meet & Greet

• Joe: Wow…we are crashing into all of these rocks and going up in mid air, what is this? I’m pretty sure it was called something

• Bob: Capillary action, it’s when the surface of the water grabs the body of water and pulls it into the air so that gravity can’t pull it down. Hey, Why did we suddenly stop?

• Then suddenly they came to a stop in a large circle of water.• Joe: We seem to have stopped in a round body of water. Hi,

I’m Joe!• Later on they meet Lisa and June. • They suddenly feel heat, and realize they are being

evaporated.

Evaporation

• They saw the sky up above them as they were being pulled into the air.

• Lisa: Hey guys, I think we are being Evaporated! • Joe: Evaporated? What’s that?• Lisa: Evaporation is the first part of the water cycle! • June: What’s the water cycle?• Lisa: The water cycle is a cycle that repeats over

and over that starts with water, land, and the atmosphere. And us!

• They continued going up in the air until they slowly stopped.

Condensation• Bob: Why did we stop?• Joe: I remember this from my last water cycle, this is called

condensation!• Lisa: What’s that?• Joe: Condensation is when water molecules turn into clouds!• Lisa: Really! You know I heard that there is 3 different types of clouds;

Stratus, Cumulus, and Cirrus!• June: Cool! But how do we turn into clouds?• Joe: Clouds are formed from dust, with water surrounding the dust,

when these stick together, they form a cloud. • June: Wow! Very interesting! • They all started to form into clouds, they could see everything from

the view they had as they rolled across the sky, this is also known as “Birds eye view”. Suddenly, they noticed in the distance, water droplets were falling to the ground again.

Precipitation

• Bob: Hmm…is it raining over there?• Lisa: yep! That is called precipitation.• Speaking of Precipitation, did you know

that rain can fall so fast; it can fall to about 22 mph!

• June: are we going to precipitate?• They started to fall, realizing that they are

precipitating.• Joe: I think that is happening now!• They all fell, getting closer and closer to a body

of water. Lisa realized it was a pond.

A sudden splash!

• Lisa: hey guys! Were heading for a pond! Hey, look! There’s some sand over there. It’s being dissolved by water, the universal solvent.

• Joe: hey, is that a lily pad? • Suddenly there was a loud splash; they had fallen in the

middle of the pond.• June: Burr! It’s cold! I wonder how long it will take for this

water to boil, or completely freeze. This is called specific heat. This is important because without specific heat we would not know that it let’s temperature to change slowly, and it protects the climate in the world.

Water Lily

• June looked around and saw Bob fell onto the lily pad. June was trying to move but she couldn’t because she was stuck to the water. This is called Cohesion.

• Bob: I’m stuck! • Lisa: It’s okay! I heard from another water molecule that it is

called adhesion, that is when you stick to other objects, such as a lily pad.

• June: Did you know another name for a lily pad is a “water lily”?

• Lisa: Oh I heard that too! Hmm…I wonder what the waters density is. Waters density is very important because if there’s more objects, such as rocks, in the water, it will be denser. But if there’s less objects in the water, it will be less dense.

Do-over!

• Joe noticed it was very windy outside, and because of this Bob started to roll off the lily pad and landed in the water. Now Bob was stuck to him. This is called Polarity; it’s what makes water so sticky.

• Bob: Okay, so what happens now? We got evaporated, turned in to clouds, also known as condensation, and then we fell from the sky, called precipitation…

• June: Well, now it happens all over again!
