The Waste Land
• Defined as land which is degraded and is presently lying unutilized .
(Except current fallow due to different constrains)
Waste lands in India• 6,38,518.31 sq.Km of wastelands in India.• 20.17% of the total geographical area.• Growing demand for fuel, fodder,
wood and food has extensively depleted or eliminated protective plant cover and expressed surface soils to processes of degradation result in partial to complete loss of soil productivity
Waste land classificationCultivable waste land• Gullied and ravenous land• Undulating upland• Surface water logged land• Salt affected• Shifting cultivation area• Degraded forestland• Degraded Grazing land• Non forestland Degraded• Strip land• Sand• Mining and industrial waste land
Uncultivable waste land
• Barren rock/stone waste/Sheet rock area
• Steep sloping area• Snow covered area• Glacier area
Environmental factors in wasteland
•Air pollution•Previous and adjacent land used.•Substrate, topography Drainage•Available flora, fauna

TIME
• MANY WASTELAND SHITES ARE LASTING FOR VERY SHORT TIME AND REDEVELOPMENT TAKEPLACE WITHIN A FEW YEARS.
Wasteland reclamation
• succession" is the observed process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time. A serious of stages can often be findout.
• An initial annual/ Biannial/shortlived perennial stage, the plants colonising an often-bare inorganic substrate containing at best a few small patches were organic detritus or a thin solid is found.
• Nitrogen fixing plants increase the amount of available nitrogen. Wind blown-species are characteristic
After perhaps 3-6 years , as the soil cover becomes greater in extent and depth, and with an increase in organic matter and available nutrients, the vegetation often becomes dominated by tall perennial herbs.
Woody species begin to colonise, whether scrambling species such as bramble or small trees, but numbers and cover at this stage remain low
• With time the proportion of grass in the vegetation increases, and after 8-10 years or so tall herb communities may give way to grassland, though a grassland in which some perennial, especially rhizomatous plants may persists as well as woody species and as more and more woody plants enter the tall herb or grassland community, these may eventually be replaced by scrub woodland.
THREADS
• Change in land use Many wasteland sites are subject to a
change of land use within a few years of their creation.
• Brownfield site development
• Habitat fragmentation and isolation
• Inappropriate regeneration and reclamation• Change in industrial processes• Increase fly flip and vandalism• Public use
Basic requirement for wasteland development
• Skill training• Forestry• Health education• Nutrition• Animal Husbandry• Conservation• Agricultural extension
