Michelle, who serves as the secretary on the Board of Directors for the House of Hope–a homeless shelter for men in Warren County–is also on the board of the Thermal Shelter, which gives the homeless of Warren County a place to stay warm during the winter months. The shelter is not in a fixed location–rather it is a corporative effort by eight churches in the area, including New Hope Bible Church, Front Royal United Methodist Church, Front Royal Presbyterian Church, Marlow Heights Baptist Church, Riverton United Methodist Church, Virginia Hills Church, First Baptist Church and Dynamic Life Church. As she noted, last year they only had four churches working with them, so this was a welcome addition. Each church serves as the host for a week, although this season several of the churches have invited them to stay for two weeks. When the program began last year, according to Michelle, they had to purchase an enclosed trailer to transport the cots and bedding from church to church and a 15-passenger van donated (although it needed some work done, and of course required insurance and title). As she said, “Most of the money goes to pay the night managers 12-13 hours a day, seven days a week for 15 weeks.” The volunteers assisting the program arrive early on Saturday morning at the church hosting that week, and set up the bedding and get ready to greet their guests. The numbers have grown this year over last year: last year they served 15 guests, including 2 women. This year that total has grown to 36 guests for the year, including 12 women. The guests are assigned a cot when they arrive at the church, and that is their bed for a week. There are separate sleeping areas for men and women, and the program does not allow guests or volunteers with the program until they are at least 18 years of age because they are a no-barrier shelter. The guests are provided supper at about 7:30 each evening, and the volunteers join them. After supper, the volunteers join them and they play a variety of games, watch TV, or simply lie down on their cots after a tiring day. As the guests noted, this makes them feel as if someone really cares about the. Michelle said this makes a world of difference to them, because they too often feel alone and abandoned, as if the outside world ignores them. The following morning several of the churches provide breakfast, and some provide a bagged lunch when they leave for the day. Rob, Melanie, and Brian attended the AreaOne Dinner during PETS (President-ElectTraining Seminar) at The Quarter In Roanoke.Rob is the incoming President of our Club,Melanie as the President-Elect for our Club, andBrian as the new Area 1 Governor.

Congratulations to the Skyline Middle SchoolInteract Club for raising $352.00 for AdadeaseJunction Junior High School (Rotary Global Grant 19-78274), providing education, sanitation and cleanwater for children in remote Ghana. Special thanks toSkyline Middle School Interact coordinators MaryGehly, Marlena Conner and Melanie Catron, for theirincredible work this year, in getting students involvedin a variety of service above self opportunities.

George presented flags from Rotary Clubs of KampalaMetropolitan, and the Rotary Club of Mengo Uganda, District 9211, toour Club. George recently returned from Uganda with Walter Hughes.

HANDS AGAINST HUNGER

Linda is in Room 486 in Winchester Medical Center.Several club members that visited her over the weekendsaid she enjoys having visitors when she is awake and able.Please continue to keep her in your thoughts.

Dave Blauvelt let us know that his spouse, Betsy, had aterrible fall, with numerous broken bones, and then suffereda second fall. Recovery will be slow, and we miss Dave atour meetings.

Bill Scholar’s wife also had a bad fall, and he has taken aleave of absence to care for her. Although A.D. is on aLOA, we were very happy to see him at our last meeting.

George read thank you notes from two groups onWednesday. The first was from Joy Cover and theFreedom 424 organization. This organization exists tobring freedom and justice to victims and survivors ofsexual exploitation and human trafficking. Joy wrote tothank us for allowing her organization to present theirmission to the District Conference, and for the generousdonation which allows them to continue to bring freedomand justice to those who are being exploited.

The second thank-you note was from the Rotary Clubof Frederick County, and was signed by their membersthanking us for “Such a fun-filled meaningful weekend!Ya’ll Rock!” wrote one member. Another said “So manyhours, so much planning, so much work, so appreciated!!!It was absolutely fabulous!!!!”

GALA TICKETSBarbara distributed tickets for the upcoming Gala, scheduled forApril 27. Each member received two tickets, but if you needadditional tickets, see her on Wednesday. The Gala theme, “RotaryAround the World,” promised to be great fun, and lends itself to allsorts of dress ideas. Each table will be decorated in honor of one ofthe countries Rotary has been involved with. The table decorationsby Peggy and Krista are in themselves going to be worth the price ofadmission. Ticket price is set at $75 dollars. There will be a liveauction, as well as a silent auction, so save the date and plan toattend. Each member is responsible for at least one item. “Whenyou sell or purchase your Gala tickets, please don't forget to fill out(and return to me) your ticket stub. You can also let us know on theback of the stub if you have dietary restrictions or seating requests.”

Shane Goodwin (above) presented his memberintroduction on Wednesday. Shane is the AssistantPrincipal at E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School, Heand Rodney Brown were instrumental in starting The BoysInto Gentlemen Club which introduces fourth and fifth-grade boys to opportunities for leadership, mentoring, andcommunity involvement by learning about differentpersonal and social skills, including group dynamics,etiquette, and career exploration through lessons, guestspeakers, and hands-on activities. He has been in ourcommunity since 2018, with his wife and two boys.

Rob had the magic ticket this Wednesday, and chose totake home a very nice bottle of scotch.

They can be dropped off atJean’s Jewelers or brought to the meetings on Wednesday,along with the filled-out sheets We need to be able to puttogether a listing of our auction items. She reported thatthere will be at least four live auction items.

FRONT ROYAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

On May 16, 2019, the Rotary Club of Warren County willhold its Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at theShenandoah Valley Golf Club. Registration will take place at11:30 am, followed by lunch and a Shotgun Start at 1 pm.The Awards will be present at 6 pm. Entry fee is $300 perteam, $75 per player. Deadline to register is May 10.
