not a WASA event

The WASA Council for 2016 is already beginning to plan the 2017 activities and we really would appreciate your ideas and thoughts with regard to :

Meeting topics / demonstrators

Exhibition staging / location / promotion Workshops We are about to begin filming the demonstrator / speaker at our meetings so we can put it up on the www for members who can’t attend meetings to watch. As your reluctant President and with the Council’s assistance I hope we can continue to meet our member’s needs in developing their interests and passion for wildlife art. WASA is now in a position which allows us to do more for wildlife and to that end we will continue donating to selected NGO wildlife-related charities and in 2017 we plan to increase WASA’s level of involvement. The too-small Council (6 of us) are all hard-working people with little time to spare and if you can email or phone with your ideas it really will help us. We’re happy to do the work but sometimes ideas and inspiration run a little low. I encourage you to get more involved with the Society and together we can work both for the members and hopefully for wildlife preservation as well.

WASA Meeting - 19th April 2016 by Ralph Keller

This month we were treated once again, to a presentation by Stephen Powell . Well known in the Society as professional wildlife artist, photographer and tour guide in Africa, he really needs no further introduction. His talk was in two parts - how to take good photographs of artwork and then how to treat and store them in computer files.

Taking the photographs Stephen began the thought that we spend a lot of time and effort to create paintings to the best of our ability. We should also try to do justice to the photos we take of these artworks.

Even as personal records photos should be reasonable quality but they might also be needed as promotion on websites and in print, or they could be used to make derivative products - greeting cards, posters, advertising material and so on in the future.

However, the pictorial quality for such uses needs to be high and this simply can't be achieved by casually pointing the camera in automatic mode, towards the painting and pressing the shutter. We need to be rather more in control!

Here are Stephen's main points on how to do this:

- Learn to set aperture and shutter speed manually and so be in control of the exposure.

- Lenses on wide angle zoom settings tend to distort the image. Use a medium or "portrait" zoom setting. This is achieved as follows: stand about 2 metres away from an adult person and zoom in to get just head and shoulders in frame. Keep this setting fixed and move physically forward or back to fill the frame with the subject you wish to photograph.

- Do not use a lens at its largest aperture - it is least sharp at this setting and also results in the picture having a very shallow depth of field. Close the aperture by 1 or 2 stops - and slow down the shutter speed to match.

- Set up the camera square to the picture plane with the lens axis pointing at the picture's centre.

- If photographing outdoors, make use of the diffused light in shaded areas. Indoors also choose a diffused light source with a colour temperature of between 5000 and 6500 Kelvin, i.e. Natural Daylight temperature. (You find the colour temperature stated on the lamp or on its package).

- Make use of your camera's "White Balance" panel and manually set the relevant lighting situations in which you happen to photograph - e.g. sunlight, shade, Tungsten etc. This will help the camera to reproduce the correct colours.

Contd…………..

Integrating and Manipulating Photos in Computer Files

For this, there are of course, a number of different Photoshop type programs available. Stephen drew our attention to the one he prefers and uses - LIGHTROOM CC.

To list all the functions and capabilities of this very powerful and versatile program is quite outside the scope of this review. It has to suffice to say that it is capable of correcting virtually all "shortcomings" of a photograph - from exposure problems to colour balance to shape distortion.

Secondly, it is also an immensely useful tool for cataloguing and keeping track of great numbers of pictures in its files. Stephen, for instance, mentioned that he has about 100 000 photos in his system, any of which he must be able to find and retrieve quickly. Once pictures have been catalogued according to the program's flexible Keyword system, finding them again is a quick and sure process with Lightroom CC.

Stephen has indicated that he is quite happy to receive a phone call from anybody interested to hear more about Lightroom CC or if you have another query. Phone 03) 9754-2811

Before finishing, Stephen spoke about the proposed Wildlife Art Museum of Australia - WAMA for short. This is a project to create a place dedicated to displaying and celebrating all types of "ARTWORK INSPIRED BY NATURE". The planned museum complex will comprise a gallery for exhibitions as well as an education centre. It is to be located in a beautiful setting in Halls Gap with the majestic Grampian mountains as backdrop.

So far, the necessary land has been acquired and funds are now being raised for the next stage. Once completed, this will surely be an absolutely wonderful showcase for all branches of natural history art - I can't wait for it to open!

Thank you Stephen, for talking to us and for giving us the benefit of your extensive knowledge and experience in connection with digital photography and related computer usage.

Parking at WASA monthly meetings In the car park at the rear of the library it is only

1 hour parking until 9pm so don’t park there.

:

Watercolour Brushes by Alan Rawady The three benchmarks for a good watercolour brush a re : *A great point – the brush should come to a crisp point. A an excellent brush will hold that point during use allowing the artist to create fine detail and edges. * Perfect ‘snap’ or spring – the brush should spring crisply back into shape during use. The right degree of spring allows the artist to have control with an element of ‘give and take’ between the brush and the paper surface. * Even flow control – the colour should flow evenly and consistently from the brush point and there should be capacity within the belly of the brush to enable the artist to lay down flowing, gestural strokes of colour.

Caring for Brushes For best results always use the tip of the brush ( rounds) and avoid using the heel too much as heeling burns the hairs. Never leave brushes standing in water. Do not ‘scrub’ the brush too much.

Wash brushes in cold water – never hot water. Wash one colour out of the brush before taking up the next colour with the brush. Use a jar of water for washing the brush and another jar of clean water to mix/dilute the paint. When cleaning up after a painting session wash brushes in clean water and a very little bit of soap. Then stand them upright on the tip of the handle.

‘Turn Around’ winners of judging – points towards W ASA’s Artist of the Year

(pictures on next page) First ‘Giraffe’ by Vida Pearson

A standout work that ticks all my ‘boxes’ - this artist shows a superb understanding of the animal and how to use the medium. The artist uses the right amount of line, tone and texture to express the form and grace of

the subject. Nothing is overstated, just beautifully created to create a pose, a feeling, a work. A strong composition with excellent use of space and a creative piece which exhibits great feeling and honesty.

Second ‘ Diamond Python’ by David Reynolds

This is a s striking work that captures the beauty of the animal. Snakes and reptiles are difficult and often divisive subjects that can be confronting for the viewer. However, the artist charms us with the use of

colour and a sinuous shape leading our eye into the curled form. There is a lovely contrast between the detail of the snake and the looser, painterly technique on the wood. This works shows great sensitivity to

the subject and use of the medium. An innovative composition that creates a good balance of space.

Third ‘Refuge, New Holland Honeyeater Nest’ by Paul ine Dewar A timeless and engaging subject excellently realised. The beautifully rendered and carefully balanced

composition make this small work a little gem. The accuracy of the drawing is particularly good and the well-crafted detail invites closer inspection. This beautiful little artwork proves that size should be no

indicator of the worth of an artwork.

Turn Around winner – ‘Helicopter Seeds’ by Justine Ulmann

$100 Senior Art Supply gift voucher with WASA’s com pliments

The innovative design and position of the subjects make this work a delight. A great composition with excellent handling of the medium. The work flows beautifully from the top of the page down, inviting our eye

to cascade down with the falling seeds and back up again to closely examine where they originated.

If you’re interested to read the judge’s comments about your artworks let us know and we’re happy to send them to you privately. Many other artworks received praise and all received constructive commentary.

Thanks to Linda for her time and consideration !

At the time of finishing this Warble we’re half way through the exhibition and we have sold six artworks.
