The Voluntary Trumpet A PUBLICATION OF THE CHARLESTON CHAPTER
OF THE AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS
OCTOBER 2018
The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral
music. We encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; inspire, ed-
ucate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; provide networking, fel-
lowship, and mutual support; nurture future generations of organists; promote the organ in
its historic and evolving roles; and engage wider audiences with organ and choral music.
DEAN’S LIST It was wonderful to see so
many of you at our Sep-
tember Meet and Greet at
Ms. Rose's. Thank you to
Dr. Bill Gudger for his
very fun quiz and prizes! I
think most of us learned
something we didn't know
before, and I'm certain that
we all had a great time.
The evacuation for Hurricane Florence gave me the oppor-
tunity to catch up on my magazine subscriptions which in-
cluded The American Organist. Since then I've been thinking
about the future for those of us in church music, classical per-
formance, and music education. As our society more passively
consumes music through recordings, there is still nothing like
live music making. Each of us in the AGO can think of an in-
stance in which someone in our congregations and audiences
has come to us and thanked us for the way the music has
moved and elevated their souls. We are so very fortunate to be
in service to the music even though we see smaller audiences,
congregations, and budgets for music. And we have the sup-
port of each other to magnify the good times and to help us
through those times when we are discouraged.
I hope everyone will be able to attend our next meeting with
the Grand Strand and Wilmington, NC Chapters at St. Philip
Lutheran Church in Myrtle Beach. Please make sure to RSVP
when Ed sends out an email reminder so that we can give
them a head count. We will be receiving complimentary mu-
sic from our clinician, Richard VanAuken.

OCTOBER PROGRAM
MAKING YOUR MUSIC COUNT A WORKSHOP SPONSORED BY THE GRAND STRAND CHAPTER
WITH CHARLESTON AND WILMINGTON, NC
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 / 9:00 AM – NOON
ST. PHILIP LUTHERAN CHURCH 6200 N Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572
Guest clinician, RICHARD VANAUKEN, a native of Pennsylvania, began
piano lessons at age eleven, followed by organ study at age thirteen.
Shortly thereafter he was appointed organist of St. Matthew’s Lutheran
Church in Kellers Church, PA. Following graduation from high school
and service with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea, he studied at the Phil-
adelphia Conservatory of Music as an organ major with Dr. Robert
Elmore.
His piano teachers included private study with Eleanor Sokoloff of Curtis Institute, Susan Starr, Kenneth
Amada, and Natalie Hinderas. He has spent many years as an organist and choral director, teacher of
workshops and seminars in both piano and organ, and for thirty years was Artist-Teacher in the music
department of Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA as well as visiting instructor at Lafayette College in
Easton, PA.
As a recitalist and workshop leader he has presented programs in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida,
Texas, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee
and Canada. Richard has written articles dealing with keyboard pedagogy which have been published
by the American Piano Teachers Association as well as the Music Teachers National Magazine. In-
cluded in his writings are several books of hymn tune arrangements for organ which serve as accompa-
niments to congregational singing.
Mr. VanAuken will address developing our individual talents and enhancing our keyboard skills. At-
tendees will receive a book of VanAuken’s hymn introductions and harmonizations. Donations are
gratefully accepted.
CHARLESTON CHAPTER OPENING DINNER Members gathered at Ms. Rose’s Fine Foods on September
10, in spite of the impending onslaught of Hurricane Florence,
for a festive opening dinner to welcome the new season. As it
turned out, Ms. Florence decided merely to brush Charleston
with no major damage. Once again we were treated to one of
Dr. William Gudger’s musical quizzes, always fun and always
difficult. Prizes were distributed even to D- testees. Thanks to
Nancy Lefter for getting things organized!
